Terri Dawson has been chasing a dream; a dream of becoming an A-list actress to the likes of Viola Davis or Regina King. Though she's had her share of supporting roles in television and even on the big screen, she's struggled to achieve that pinnacle of success she's always wanted. As respectable and Oscar-worthy roles become harder to come by, the industry and in one last ditch effort to salvage what was left of her career, she begrudgingly accepted an offer to become a regular on a hit reality television show based in Atlanta only to be fired after the first season . Wallowing in self-pity and junk food, Terri sells her condo, packs up her car and makes a beeline out of Atlanta to figure out what's next? Devastation, Louisiana is all a buzz about the new resident in town. A famous actress has bought a house and decided to call the small town home. Dr. Nicholas "Nick" Hunt , born and raised in Devastation, practices medicine in New Orleans. When he comes home for a quick visit for a few days, he meets the beautiful, Terri Dawson. Several years older than he is , Nick doesn't let something as silly as age get in the way of pursuing this gorgeous woman, convinced that she might just be the one. Luther has never forgiven himself for not being there for his wife when she needed him most. Years later, her death still haunts him, compelling him to walk away from his passion-music. By the time he realizes the error of his ways, he's left with a strained relationship with his only son , and the guilt of not being there for the boy during the darkest moments of his life. Terri Dawson is light, a second chance at life, but does he deserve a fresh start?
The premise of this book was good - Actress trying to start her life over as her career is ending - but the plot fell a little short for me in that much of it was very predictable and cliche'.
I did enjoy the small town of Devastation and its inhabitants. It reminded me of the small town where I grew up, and everyone knew everyone's business, and there was no shame in gossiping about it (Tee Hee). I also liked the way Ms. Mason "touched" on issues such as colorism, body morphing, chronic disease, LBGTQ Awareness, depression and suicide, but did not "beat" the reader over the head with it.
Some of the writing was distracting and the word "Introspect" and derivatives thereof, were overused unnecessarily.
I hate that this is J.D. Mason's farewell song. I have enjoyed her writing career and particularly enjoyed the book, "Finding Amos", which she co-authored with Bernice McFadden and ReShonda Tate-Billingsley. Our book club read this book for our December, 2016 meeting and Ms. Mason and Ms. Tate-Billingsley participated via Skype.
Our book club will be discussing this book on October 2nd via Zoon, and I can hardly wait to hear everyone's perspective.
The story opens of Terri an actress that has now been resolved to Reality TV. Due to her “boring” story line, Terri is transported to Devastation, La. with her acting career in Retirement. The name of the town would have been enough for me not to stop unless I was on empty and needed gas( I digress).
The author takes the reader on a journey with friendships, relationships, and family drama. I was initially intrigued by the first relationship, but after that the reader quickly understands broken families/relationships would now be Shattered with no opportunity of rekindling. While I understand all stories may not follow the fairy tale path, I really had high hopes for one of the most important relationships in this story. All I will say is “clutch your pearls”.
I’ve enjoyed other work of Ms Mason and wish her much success in her next adventure.
I remember the first book I read from JD Mason, "On the eighth day she rested". I was hooked. Even being mostly a fantasy book reader, JD Mason's books keeps me wanting to read more. I can't recall a book that was written by JD that I didn't finish within 3 days, and that's with a full-time job. This book tackles a big issue with all people; brokenness and the curtains we hide behind so others can't see. I found my healing in writing. And every time I stopped I would find myself broken again. I loved this book and I was fire hot with the actions of Terri. Hurt people hurt people. But people who are learning to heal can show others.
Broken Glass is a very interesting read with life stories that are so intriguing and relatable to today's time. Selfishness is so evident in their lives as it is today in reality for this young generation. Not that it's a bad thing in the artistic sense. Real life is always a joy to read because it gives us a feeling of not being alone. I enjoyed this story to the very end and I'm happy for the ending with the way it turned out.
Terri hurt by an industry that loves you and leaves you is searching for peace of mind. She stumbled upon this little town outside of New Orleans only to fall into another acting gig but a true life drama. I was really hoping Luther would help heal her brokenness and find healing as well!! Poor Nick was never in the cards for her. Maybe healing can still come, we are left with that maybe.
Broken glass by JD Mason was a slow read at first but it picked up. This book is about finding your way when all the noise is gone. Terri learned a lot about her own life moving to a small town. She found out who she was and what she was made of. What she didn’t know was that she would find love in an unusual way but through the heartache, pain, gossip and uncertainty, she seeks to find true love, but will she? Diva Reviewer - Gloria
Is what it should have been called or maybe even “Messy” but it was way too much going on in Terri’s life and she was like a train wreck. I knew she was a problem when she “noticed” the father and was already with his son. Nice story and Lanette needs a story too just not one in which she’s portrayed as crazy even though she is. I hope Nick gets his happy ending soon.
Wow! Just when you think you've got it all figured out, life happens. I loved Terri's story. It was real and made you think. Lynette, despite her crazy ways, saw things clearer than Terri. She recognized Terri's broken soul and was drawn to her because they were the same.
This book brought up a lot of questions for me. I did like the way the author wrote her story. Terri, one of the main characters was torn by the way things turned out, but sometimes it's just for the best! I do believe readers will enjoy reading this book. I hate it ended so abruptly! I definitely recommend this book!
Well just dang. The book just ended and I wasn't ready. I felt Luther and Terri and I need to see them though. This author never disappoints and I still hope and pray she feels in her heart that she gives ilua more!
Once again J.D. Mason shines. This book was a beautiful love story that twisted and turned and gave hope to a " happily ever after". I loved it. As the story of Terri and Luther must continue, maybe she'll come out of retirement for one last hurrah!
This novel took me in and allowed me to journey along with it. I made friends with the characters and didn’t want them to leave me. Enjoyed every page and woke up each morning reading the novel before I got out of bed. Thanks for my new best friends!
Awesome! With that being said, I read somewhere that your not writing anymore after this book; Please dont stop. I would like to know what happens with the main characters.
3.5 I think I personally didn't like the writing style which took me a while to get into it. Decent read but I'm hesitant to read anything else by this author.
