Abe never intended to be a lifelong bachelor. It just happened. Now he’s staring down fifty. Alone. Watching the men around him find what always seemed to escape his grasp. Unfortunately, the only woman to catch his eye in years is more than a handful. Elise is high-strung, smart-mouthed, and defiant as hell. And he can’t seem to stay away from her. Until she’s taken from him. Abe’s waited years to find his match. Now he will move heaven and Earth to find her and bring her back where she belongs. With him. **** Elise has a problem. And it comes in the form of a six-foot-four stack of silver fox. Abe is not what she needs right now. He is a grown man. Mature. Knowledgeable. Experienced. But running from him is not an option. The man is too fast. Holding her ground with him will take courage. Strength. And a whole lot of bluffing. But Abe isn’t her only problem. She’s in the sights of an unknown threat. One willing to do anything to preserve their empire.
I’ve probably said this for the last 6 books, this was, for me, the best of the series and I absolutely friggin loved Rico’s book. With each book we are just being pulled in more and more to the world of Alaskan Security and GHOST! And I love it.
Elise is one we didn’t know too much about until Advance by Bounds, when we got to see quite a bit more of her, and it was obvious all wasn’t quite as it seemed. Finding out what was beneath was a shocker. She’s so strong on the outside and yet so not within.
Abe, well what can I say about Abe? He’s amazing, so patient and just what Elise needs to see her worth, he may have to use some tough love, but if it works!
Yet again we see the force that Intel have become and what they are prepared to do to get things done.
I absolutely love the take no sh!t attitude the girls have, making sure their voices are heard. Heidi is still the head poncho for me. Definitely the ring leader, she shows no mercy and it’s brilliant, she leads the way for the others to be themselves.
Jemma Westbrook elevates the intimacy of romantic suspense in a story that will captivate you until you reach THE END. She develops characters with depth. Like an onion, you'll love each layer that she uncovers. Elise, underneath all the strength and bravado lies deep insecurities. Abe helps her find the balance she needs to overcome and heal old wounds. Abe is probably one of the most swoon-worthy characters that Jemma has written and she's written many amazing characters as her other pen names–Janice Whiteaker and Josie Watts.
As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner): The Alaskan Security series by Jemma Westbrook/Janice Whiteaker is one of my favorite series! Every time I read it, it just makes me happy to be revisiting old characters, meet new characters and go on (high-stakes) adventures with them. Friendly Fire was no different.
Friendly Fire is book 7 in the series and is Abe and Elise’s story. Elise worked with most of the girls of Team Intel in Cincinnati before transferring to Alaskan Security. Elise broke my heart in this and I actually related a lot to what she was going through. So thank you Janice for creating such a real and relatable character!
I loved her and Abe together. I thought they were the perfect pair! I loved that they went toe-to-toe on almost everything! And I loved that no matter how much Elise was being a pain in his ass, Abe stuck by her and showed her that not everyone will give up on her.
This story had it all; steam, humor and non-stop action!
As I said earlier, I love reading this team and we got to see a lot of the characters we’ve come to know and love since the beginning. Heidi is an absolute riot and has been since her story in Guerrilla Tactics! I loved seeing her go toe-to-toe with Vincent. If she hadn’t already been paired up with Shawn, I would have liked to see what a Heidi/Vincent pairing would look like. The girl gang aspect of this series is one of my favorites! I love knowing I can read a book/series where the girls are never mean to each other, can hold their ground in a fight and aren’t afraid to stick up for what and who they believe in. And I love it even more when the men don’t hold them back! Yes, they still are protective of them but they’re not overbearing!
If this is your first time reading Alaskan Security, Janice does a real nice job of recapping everything that has happened so far so you’re not left in the dark.. While this is a standalone, I definitely recommend that you start reading from the beginning with Collateral Damage (prequel to Loss Recovery) because this series is just phenomenal and you need to witness it from the beginning!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
One again, Jemma Westbrook has elevated her Romantic Suspense game, bringing heat, humor, and intimacy to a new level in “Friendly Fire.” The author includes a warning at the beginning that this story contains elements of self-harm, so please be aware of that. What I love is how she handled the topic within the story with respect, making it essential to the characters and their developing relationship, but not gratuitous, glamourous, or overly stereotypical. Through incredibly quotable dialogue and character interactions, Westbrook builds a relationship not just between her main characters, Abe and Elise, but solidifies the friendships and connections between and among her characters from the prior novels in the Alaskan Security Series. I fell in love with Elise in “Advance by Bounds.” Her snark, sarcasm, and fierce loyalty to her friends almost made her seem untamable. But all she needed was a heart and mind able to break down her walls and see her for the fragile but determined spirit she is. Elisa and Abe are a perfect match: an age gap romance with a much deeper layer of intimacy than one might expect. “Friendly Fire” has all the classic Westbrook elements that make her books so strong. The Girl Gang is in full effect. Team Rogue has their hands full with a new situation, creating all sorts of havoc for Alaskan Security. And Abe and Elise’s story becomes the critical element that ties them all together, rather than a side note in the on-going situation plaguing the company they work for. I definitely recommend reading this series in order, as it will give you a much better understanding of the characters and how they work together.
I just wanted this to be better all around. I’m always here for an older man, younger woman trope but this one lacked on story, character development, resolution and description. It could have been so much better but this series is just cookie cutter. All the men are the same, all the women are the same, the setting is the same and everything is boring. Just disappointing. Also HUGE pet peeve of mine, there were a sh*t tonne of grammatical and sentence structure errors. I stopped reading to highlight them for Amazon. Please invest in a good proofreader and editor.
The author was thoughtful enough to include a caution ‘this read contains an instance of self-harm.’ If this is you, please heed.
Unfortunately, I did not/could not connect with this read. I didn’t find Elise interesting character in an earlier outing and here, all I could see/hear/think for her character was an overindulged spoiled brat and regret there weren’t more choices for Abe. To my taste, chemistry and story were missing here as I struggled quite a bit to get past the first few chapters Rating: 2stars
It takes a really brave man to take on the sass and snark of our heroine, Elise, and see past it to the fear and pain inside. This story is such a fantastically well told look at a wounded warrior-ess, and the warrior who teaches her how to love herself as well as him. Add in the suspense and excitement that comes with Alaskan Security, and it's a very entertaining read!
This book will hold your attention from the very beginning until the end. Elise touched home for me and helped me understand a little bit more. What an amazing writer, I have read all her books and not a single one has let me down.
Jemma Westbrook never disappoints me. She gives me exactly what I Need in a story, and one thing I truly love about her books is the fact that none of her heroes or heroines are without issue. This one especially, focuses on the mental wellbeing of Elise. When you first meet Elise in the series, she is strong personality that you think has everything worked out and is a strong presence. Then you fully meet her in this book, and you realize that she puts on a great show but is truly struggling to belong and have a good self-worth. Abe has his work cut out for him with Elise because of somethings that transpired with them in the previous book. But I love the way in which Westbrook travels this road wit these two. Elise is never “healed” from her issues but is allowed to be a better version of herself.
Abe himself has struggles, but a big part of his is self-inflicted because of the “reality” that he saw himself having. I love this series and the fact that the group of women are strong, intelligent, no-holds-bar women who know their worth apart and together. They are a group of women who find themselves individually in their books but realize that they are a force to be reckoned with as a group. These books work better when you read the sequentially because there are over-arching storylines that make more sense when you read them in order, but you could read them as standalones if you wish.
My one issue with the book that I wanted more of and why I gave this a 4 and not a 5 is that I wanted a little more from Elise and her backstory. I wanted to understand her motivations of self-harm and that reality a little more.
Some of the things that I most admire about this author is the eternal capacity she has to always surprise us, and the unique and particular way she has to tell us the story. her characters are not linear and never run where you think. I don't always agree with her women, but Elise is special to me. Beyond the story itself, there is a sense of belonging, acceptance, friendship and family that fills the entire story. And that's the special part for me, finding the story beyond the story.
Abe and Elise are a great combination. Like oil and water some days and strawberries and cream the next. Elise story is written so well and tugs at your heart. Abe is the perfect man for her.. She just needs to let the walls down. Superb book
Whew. Abe and Elise were fierce! The banter, the steam, and the fast paced storyline made this one book I absolutely could not put down. I read it all in one sitting, and am wishing it was about 500 pages longer! I need more of this couple!
But it seemed to be missing things earlier stories had. The bad guys seemed way too stupid for the extravagant plan going on with the weapons. And the connection between Abe and Elise seemed to go back and forth a lot and not in a good, cohesive way.
I know this one had a trigger warning. That was fine. The subject wasn’t an issue for me. The ongoing story for the series is ok. I just couldn’t connect with the couple. It’s just me. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it either.
I'm at the point where I'm not longer sure whether I love Jemma Westbrook or hate her. OK, probably more on the love side, but for real this series is putting us all through it!!
I thought we had all that past stuff sort of settled, but it just keeps popping up. Even Pierce has realized that this is the new normal.
I love the strong women of Intel. Elise seemed like she might not fit in with them exactly, but this up close look at her shows us both her strengths and her weaknesses. There is some sensitive content with her which is mostly past, but a little in the present. Her other secret is also surprising.
Abe is a perfect fit for her because she's definitely not "too much" for him like she has been for other people. She seems older than her actual age, which is not uncommon for survivors of abuse and trauma. I'm not a huge fan of 20-year age gaps, but it's not written in a way that is creepy or gross. In particular, their intimate scenes do not have an uncomfortable power dynamic. There is also no .
Ms. Westbrook does such an exceptional job of writing the prior trauma and current responses of all the main characters, I can only assume she had a consultant in psychology or has personal expertise.
Some might say that it's not possible that all the main characters have some sort of trauma. This is probably the most accurate part - because they have survived intensely emotional and chaotic circumstances, trauma survivors are over-represented in high-intensity jobs like this, because they can tolerate it. "Normal" people often don't have the bandwidth to deal with that on a long-term basis.
I'm emotionally wrung out, I read Book 9, then 1-7 so I only have book 8 left in this series so I'm going to keep going. But I'm going to need a fluffy book after this.
Wow. I've enjoyed some of the books in this series. This is definitely not one of them.
The female lead was awful. That extremely angry, combative, childish trope isn't a good one. For more than half the book, she spat childish backtalk after nearly everything the male lead said. I was seriously waiting for her to say, "I know you are, but what am I?" These are supposedly people in their 30s, yall. Really? Her childish behavior caused several others in their group to be seriously injured. But no recognition of that on her behalf. Huh?
His answer to everything was major physical lockdown and teasing her anout potential $ex. Oh, and here you go--she was a virgin. Barf. When they did the deed, there was way too much chatting throughout. And it just wasn't hot. At all.
I don't get all the fabulous reviews. These two had zero chemistry. The FL was childishly combative and lacking in any real character. I wanted to feel sympathy for her damage, but she was so ugly and difficult in her behavior that I couldn't. And the ML also lacked any real understanding of the FL. He just used his hotness and physical bullying to control her through $ex. There was no relationship there at all.
I'm not interested in reading the rest of this series.
My heart breaks for Elise, for the despair she feels and the relief she seeks, also for the fact that she has no idea how to ask for the help she needs. Nor does she realise that she is exactly where she needs to be, in Alaska with Intel and Rogue, she is part of them, they love her and will protect her from everything....including herself! Abe is awesome here, he swoops in to save her but does it in a way that allows her to keep her dignity. He never fails to be what she needs....growly in control Alpha, a protector, a non judgmental ear, a sounding board, a lover and a supporter when she doubts herself. He knows exactly what he wants....everything! Alaskan Security are still under attack, so this is a high adrenaline, explosive and rocky road to romance....but we don't expect smooth and easy! I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
I’ve been reading them all so when I saw that Jemma was continuing the series I knew I had to grab this one!! These guys are absolutely perfect. The perfect combination of crazy, protective, and possessive. They know what they want and nothing will stand in their way. These are some fierce women it won’t take just take an ordinary man to make them fall. Loved this story and I wanna see Vincent’s story so bad! I’m waiting for Tyson and I can’t wait to see what happens. The coupling is so great in this series. I don’t know this plot continues to develop and grow but man it’s so good!! I wanna go back and re read this series again. That’s how good it is.
Another decent enough book in this series. I'm not sure if I just read them all so close together that these books lost their luster or what but it kind of feels like the same thing in every book at this point and the relationships with the team have kind of taken a back seat. They were the reason I read so that helped me lose interest too.
The next book is with a character that we didn't see a lot of the last few books and someone we weren't introduced to until the end of this one so I'm taking a break (not sure if it's a short one or permanent) since the only reason I kept going is because we saw all the characters in the first seven books in previous books (except in Eva's case but we saw enough of Brock to have me interested in his story).
It has been enjoyable listening to all the sass and attitude coming from Elise since she arrived in Alaska. Abe knew there was more to her under the facade the world sees, but I doubt he would have guessed her secret.
This age-gap was good, and I enjoyed their chemistry and connection. The storyline had a moment of calm, but has excelerated quickly... I mean, Elise was in harm's way more than once!!
The connection between Vincent and all the A. Security staff is been full of distrust and antagonistic interactions, (winding up with another A.S. Rouge member shot) and the conclusion of this one, does change a few things.
I am seriously addicted to this world, and can't wait for more! Onto 8!!
I adore this series. The combination of suspense, romance, a tight knit group of people and the Alaskan setting just does it for me. This time it was Elise and Abe’s turn. Their story was not my favorite. Even though the suspense part was really good in this one, the romance me felt a bit lacking. The connection between these two just felt off somehow. We get some spice, but not a whole lot and it felt kind of ‘mechanical’? I really liked Abe and was hoping for more from him, but alas we can’t have it all. Still a very entertaining story though!
Safety: - No OW/OM - no cheating - No separation / no third act break up - Deals with self harm
I thought this book did a fantastic job of highlighting the unrealistic expectations that society puts on women with Elise’s character. She was so easy to identify with and root for.
I don’t always love a huge age gap between characters, but this one was well done. Elise is a grown woman and Abe is a sexy silver fox. They’re great together and they handled the danger element of the story effectively with little drama (just enough to keep it interesting).
