Demon's Throne #1

Demon's Throne

Rate this book

Rys awakes to the smell of blood and nearly two thousand years of dust. Maybe he overslept a little too long. Once, he was a great champion and general in the demonic empire that ruled the world. Now, he's been erased from history.

He'll need to remind the world of the price of forgetfulness.

Now is the time to build his own empire, as the ancient powers of his time are long gone. Rys has an archipelago to conquer, women interested in extending their bloodline with him, and a mysterious labyrinth that holds the secret to why he was sealed away to begin with.

But a contract with Hell is eternal. His old employers want to turn him into their pawn, and Rys must become powerful enough to remain free.

That's not a short to-do list. But half the fun of taking over the world is the challenge.

Demon's Throne is an empire-building series with violence, harem/undefined relationships, beast girls, and scenes that don't fade to black. Consider yourself warned.

I really don't have much to say, I'm pretty much done with this book at about the 5 hour mark in the audiobook. It's sooooooo boriiinnggg!! I know this author likes to bombard the reader with too much small talk sometimes, but this was on another level. 5 hours in and nothing has happened other than everyone talking up how awesome the MC USED to be, but so far he hasn't done shit except summon some demons and forge some weapons. The only time he's fought so far were like two shitty fireballs and that's all. There was one scene where he let this demi human who showed up unannounced to his mansion disrespect him and his companions for far too long, until finally the demi guy went too far when he screamed racist remarks to our MC. The demi proposed a duel instead of apologizing, so finally our MC was gunna show why he's toted as such a badass, but nope, his subordinate friend walked in and intimidated the demi guy and our MC smirked and counted it as his win. That scene basically sums up the story, all talk no action. Its disappointing because I really enjoyed this authors Nueral Wraith series, and his Heretic Spellblade series was also pretty good. I hear it gets better later on in the second book, but there's only 3 books in the series and book 1 is a snooze fest, no real reason to keep reading on in my opinion.

Decently written, yet forgettable

Empire building, fantasy with light Harem elements and the suggestion of Gamelit.
Mild sex scenes that are mostly fade to black or abbreviated.
I didn't notice this was the same author who wrote Heritic Spellblade (I'm not even sure if they are in the same fantasy universe) when I started this, but these books feel much the same.
Demon's Throne is K.D. Robertsons take on an anti-hero, and he's not a bad guy for a badguy. Most fantasy anti-hero books are either the authors attempt to try their hand at some kind of Ayn Rand moral relativism, or to sneak in a few extra rape scenes. That's not the case here, and I like that.
This MC just wants to amass a ton of power by whatever means, and the means he has access to is infernal.
A refreshing twist here is the idea that an empire ruled by the consent of the masses will be more secure than one ruled by force and fear alone. Not the usual spiel we get from a demonic summoner.
As I read this book I thought to my self "This is pretty good- This is interesting" but it never got my heart racing. I finished it about 2 hours ago and I'm already forgetting everything about it like a dream.
It would be interesting if this is set in the same world as heritic spellblade, just told from the other side, but I can't remember enough about that book to hazard a qualified guess.

Interesting premise, but in desperate need of editing

This was a good yarn, with many interesting characters although extremely similar to the author's other series Heretic Spellblade and Empire Reforged.

Unfortunately, this title suffered from extremely poor editing and was either very rushed or a very early-career work that had been dubiously updated for publication. On multiple occasions, character's names were misspelled or words were altogether missing from sentences. Most jarring however, were switches of narration tenses between past and present even within the same paragraph.

I think with proper editing, this could be a four-star pulp fantasy harem title. As it stands however, a solid 2.5 is the best I can give it for now. Definitely worth a read, but you may find yourself rereading the same sentences multiple times in an attempt to glean the author's intent.

An interest holding first book in a series.

I enjoyed this book very much, I decided to read it after stumbling across the author brilliant Heretic Spellblade series and enjoyed this story just as much.

This book sets up the premise of what promises to be a very enjoyable kingdom building novel with a developed and competent MC that proved to be a treat to read.

One aspect I especially enjoyed is the authors ability to show that the MC is clearly extremely powerful and knowledgeable at his peak while limiting him in a way that is not frustrating in order to protect the stories sense of suspense. That is a difficult line to walk as lean too far one way and the story because boring as the MC steamrolls everything too easily and too far the other and the MC becomes frustrating to read as he becomes too limited despite us knowing he could do much better. This author has successfully thread that line in a way steeped in its own mysteries that further books promise to unravel making me look forward to further books and more developments.

He side characters are also enjoyable to read, they all have their own distinct personalities and goals, both men and women. I especially like how the author wove their species and cultural proclivities into their characteristics and backstory.

If I had any complaints it would be the lack of a second book after that light cliffhanger ending haha.

All in all I enjoyed this a lot and look forward to reading more

My goodness, he can’t walk across the room without going into a multi-page reverie about magical energies. Demon’s Infodump.

Edit: I tried it again and got through it this time. Better than I remembered but achingly slow far too often. Hopefully Rys will become more engaging as time goes on. He's rather smug and long-winded in this one.

I liked the map. It was a strange archipelago of nine main islands. Usually alternate reality worlds are one big continent in the middle, and this is the first I have seen and read that is a group of islands. Castle Aion, where Rys and his harem retinue live, is placed on two spots on the map. I suppose that later on, the main character moves the place where the Castle is placed from Kavolara to Gorgrian. Using the "magic" from the labyrinth that connects all of this world, underneath the surface.
I liked the backstory, the world development and the variety of the characters.
There is too much emphasis on the main character, Rys, an infernal, having sex with his vast harem retinue. Sex is so common and varied that I feel it's more a journal of the main character's sex life, with wars, duels and world building used as fillers.
So having sex and conquering all of the different islands is kind of like the main plot arcs of this series. Sex encounters are very descriptive, so this fantasy novel series is more erotica than a fantasy novel series. There are only two things certain in this other world, Sex and taxes. So far, this Erotica novel series has three volumes, and the third volume was just published on April of 2022.
Sex in books is not entertaining for me, because other people are having sex, not me. The other thing is sex is so free and available online on the Internet, that reading about this guy having sex with that other world is flat for me. So he gets succubus teams, Fox Beast-Folk, and the whole lot of human girls, beast-spirit-etc folk girls. The author is creative in the variety of women that make up the retinue-harem, but again, it's all fan-fiction-sex-service-erotica written by a book-geek that has little to no real sexual experience. The way I see it, is like that saying about dogs, "if a dog barks all of the time, they hardly ever bite". In this "erotica novel", there is so much talk about sex, that, I feel there is really no real sex ever. Sometimes erotica and sexuality are better, the few times they appear because the more they appear, the more common and less value they have. People value things if they are special, if they are common and done all of the time, they lose value (interest).
I already downloaded all three books of this series, but I will stop reading this story here.

The reason to read this book is Phara the kitsune, and her relationship with the MC. Let me sum her up with this brief exchange.

Phara is leaving. Girl she has protected since birth says, "Aw, I don't get a hug? What kind of godmother are you?"

Phara says, "The tough love kind," and smacks the girl with a tail.

She's incredibly tsundere, of the rolled eyes or slap-upside-the-head variety, always with a dubious comment. But in between a lot of that is some very delicate or bashful flirting with the MC, and slow acceptance of romance. This is so slowburn that the MC and her don't even seal the deal in this book. Oh, and just about every paragraph about Phara has her doing something with her tails. Plus several scenes involving touching and teasing those tails. I'm a tail-freak and even I thought it was a little much.

The actual adult content comes from very short scenes involving another woman with massive chest. Like, her two defining characteristics are her chest and how much she is into the MC absolutely conquering her and rubbing her nose in it. The scenes themselves are very brief mind you, blink and you miss it, and it's a bit jarring compared to how blushing and coy the rest of the book is. Almost like it was tossed in to hold the reader over for the next book.

All of this is buried in the minutia of empire building. The author loves his super detailed politics, and nerding about magical theory. The action, like the sex, happens very quick and is rather perfunctory. Most if it honestly didn't grab me at all and was a bit boring at times.

One final point. A thing I like about K D Robertson's books is that there actually are male minor characters. In other authors works the MC is the only guy on the planet that's not an asshole or villain.

I'll read the next book but I'm not in a hurry to. The relationship with Phara, and other scenes of witty banter or other cute touches with other characters is nice, but the overall book left me a bit cool. Still you might like wading through it.

I came across this book, for audio listeners, on Audio Book Guild. I personally liked the fact that his essence (soul) was floating around for thousands of years, only to be summoned to a world were he was needed. I have read some of these reviews about this book and the opinions of the style of the author. People tend to forget, the reason you purchase a book like this is because its a FANTASY! Just enjoy the ride and place yourself as the MC, then think about what you would do different. Remember this is not real world stuff. I have read L. J., E. V., M.E.S. and some D. K. books, I am strictly an audio listener due to I am blind in one eye and its become to much of a strain on the good one. Back on topic, I enjoyed this one very well and the dual narration really painted the picture in my mind as if I was there. Looking forward to book 2 on audio.

I enjoyed Heretic Spellblade so much that I immediately started this series too

It has a lot in common -- a huge and detailed original fantasy world, with millenia of history. A fundamental mystery at the heart of what is actually going on. A powerful, experienced main character and a supernatural helper with a suspicious agenda.

But it's a completely different setting than Spellblade. It's hard to overstate just how much history there is to the setting. There could be a dozen prequels describing the events that make up the characters' backstories.

The essentials are similar: the MC bangs women with horns, summons demons, builds an empire and navigates extremely complicated politics between multiple other nations each with their own histories, political factions, and independent characters.

It's got potential

Interesting concepts, setting/lands are interesting as well. Some of its a little too easy like, I need a castle, boom! I have a magic castle now. I'm horny, boom! All the women around me are sexy and crave me. But there's alot of potential with the story and the writing. Just needs that little extra something, that depth/richness that sucks you into the story. Maybe a little more detail, more challenges, more of dealing with the mundane (for a king) castle management, military management, etc would do the trick.. I still feel it was a good read, and I think that the author is still developing their style, and this will really begin to pay dividends soon.

An interesting start

So, overall I enjoyed the book. It was a lot of explanation, but with amnesia, a time jump from the MC as well, it was done as organically as possible.
There is the downside that the main character is stupidly OP. While that affords "basassery" it also causes a lack of stakes. What seems like peril for others might have made up for it, one in particular, but the peril came before one could get properly vested enough to care.
Smut was decent, a sprinkle here or there, not detracting from the story, just enhancing here or there. I certainly prefer it to sub par endless orgy.
Bonus points for interesting philosophical discussions, but not 5 stars worth. Still, entertaining and I'll look forward to reading more.

A very typical K.D. Robertson book. By which I mean it's a fascinating, rich world, a novel premise, thousands of years of history, a gripping plot, mysterious puzzles... The setting is like an intricate clockwork mechanism, and it's enjoyable just admiring it.

...and then the characters are, you know...there. Not bad by any means, but always just a little more two dimensional and generic than I'd prefer. (And also, inevitably, includes a kitsune/mystic fox, which is apparrently the author's calling card.)

It's a good book and seems to be shaping up to be a good series and I certainly recommend it. I just wish that 10% of the effort spent on the amazing setting had been spent on selling the idea that the characters are real people with emotions and motivations.

I wanted to take a glance at this book for some time. I hope it's like the author's spellblade series, and the protagonist builds things.

This ended up being enjoyable. I noticed that the author has a "type". Races (and their traits) that he likes to use across different series.

So far nothing feels like he is rewriting the same type of person over and over, but I only sampled four different series so far. What I can say is that he likes the protagonist to have sexual charisma, that attracts all sorts of shenanigans.

I will pick up the sequel.

Maybe a tad more evil

It was a good book and enjoyable to read, I honestly could have done with the MC being a tad more evil and being a bit more prone to punishments for both friend and foe. Doesnt have to be true evil, but just a little more of that side of the infernal culture. He just got along pretty agreeably with everyone that winds up being significant. Still I enjoyed the world and most of what went on and look forward to the next one.

Potential

Overall the story is pretty good, but (I felt) lacking. The main character is a demon but not very evil. In many cases he is ultra powerful, then very limited, a little too inconsistent.
Like most harem stories all the women want him on sight. The MC has summoned an army from hell but they serve him verses the more powerful demon summoned, which seems again inconsistent. I enjoyed the book but in hindsight it seemed unremarkable.

3.5 stars. So I have to say it's better than many other books in the genre especially in recent years. However it lacks any complex magic system, interesting world- building, character growth and many other things that could have made it better. However it was worth listening too and I will get the next book in the series. The MC is in a sense OP. There is a lot of tell and little show. Very few fights that actually are interesting. Still for some reason I felt it was a worthwhile listen.

It's very similar to heretic spellblade. There are a lot of parallels with the characters and the dynamics. I do find this one feels more like a conventional story, where HS felt more wakadoodle.
Still has the deus ex machina's that made HS annoying to read, a lot of things are given what feels like ad hoc rationalizations. I find myself going out loud 'that's convenient' when things are given arbitrary limitations or characters do things for no reason to advance the plot.

Well Done

This novel was a great jump off point for a fun story. The characters all had plenty of time to breathe and develop, and the plot pacing was perfect. The unique magic system is similar to wheat the author has presented before so there is an ease of familiarity to the flow of things. I'm intrigued, and can't wait to see where we go next.

Too much telling rather than showing

Characters and world really good and interesting, the only problem is the main character, we are constantly told how strong and badass he is but when we actually see him fight it’s always lacklustre. The fights and magic shown so far have been pretty terrible to be honest.

This book can be summed up in one word, BORING.

This is trying to set a world state that is epic and filled with intrigue, it fails. The entire first half feels like sitting in an introductory lecture in college. It is difficult to keep reading, by the time anything starts to happen you just do not care.

Very Cool Story!

Demon's Throne is one of the best fantasy books I've read. That is set in an alternate world fantasy setting. Talays as a succubus demon altered Human. Given a greatly extended lifespan. By her reforging him into an ideal Human form. With demon essence incorporated into his very being. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

Very interesting take on the genre. Even after reading hard to be sure if the protagonist will be a black hat or a white hat. For now he's certainly grey as his primary motivation seems to be enlightened self interest. hmmm come to think of it we need more politicians who think that way rather than hard left or hard right.

Disjointed Mess

This book is confusing, poorly written, and lackluster. I'm not sure why I read as much as I did but I thought maybe the plot would become more interesting.

Hard to maintain interest when having to decipher poor writing. I'd go back to the drawing board on this one and maybe find a competent editor along the way.

Solid story, clean writing

A fantasy setting, entire tropes flipped (angels aren't necessarily good, nor are infernals bad), the MC starts with lost memories, power, and time. The story is as much a mystery tale as a fantasy. To each their own, but I liked it a lot. On to book 2 now!

Became increasingly tedious

The backstory of the main character is interesting, but the story became more and more contrived and weak as it meandered on, as if the author spent almost all their time imagining someone cool and then gave zero concern for any actual plot elements.

Very good book

This is a fine higher fantasy medieval harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. The demons are especially fun and fleshed out as characters. I anxiously await the sequel.

Promising start of a series.

I love the main character of this story as an antihero and it's focus on empire building. The harem is one of the better slow burns I have have ever read with actual character growth involved.
