Sora has descended from the mountains to guard the sickly Jungha. The two have a set of rules to guide them: One, Sora decides what is considered an emergency. Two, Jungha must listen to Sora in an emergency. Three, Jungha must not bully Sora. Will they be able to stick to them?
The story starts out a bit slow, not explaining much about what is going on. It just tells of a young boy who has been sick most of his life suddenly gets sicker and his father looks desperately for help. His father comes home with another young boy from the mountains above who was beginning to/learned the "monk" ways, called Sora. Throughout the years of adolescence and teen years, Sora and Jungha's (the sick one) relationship is quite rocky. Jungha never seems to appreciate what Sora is doing for him (Sora kind of keeps the "illness" at bay for Jungha and takes on the burden himself) and Sora kind of becomes an outcast at school as well. But as Sora's fatigue gets more noticeable, Jungha starts to show that cares about Sora, something that Sora doesn't really believe in. Overlapping this whole story, are the powers of Sora, being able to see spirits, both bad and good, malignant spirit possession, and the theme of love vs. hatred. (there really is kind of a plot twist in the middle) ;)
This is my favourite webtoon, and honestly it might be because this hits literally all the right spots for me. The tone is sombre and dark, but still had some light moments, and I had no idea where the story was going at any point. Sora as a protagonist is so compelling, and I can't help but love Jeongha even with his little mean streak. The world building is wonderful and scary, and everything is so achingly beautiful. Each update towards the end just ripped my heart out and pieced it back together. Every time I think about this I want to re-read it, it's so amazing.
