I tried - but this is a DNF for me, primarily due to the writing.

I get that it’s sometimes hard to convey an accent in the written word. I lived in Texas for a period of time, so I totally understand the concept of dropping a “g” (example fixin’ instead of fixing or runnin’ instead of running). But will someone drop every single “g”? In my experience no, and I’ve got family that has a pretty strong southern accent.

I didn’t struggle as much when the characters were talking to each other. Notice I said “as much”. Drawing from my own personal experience, I couldn’t fully support the way the H talked and unfortunately, this annoyed me.

But my bigger annoyance was the inner dialogue of the H. Even though people may speak aloud one way, they often think differently in their head. Using my own personal experience (again), even though I would say “fixin” out loud, that’s not necessarily the way my thoughts would roll through my head.

So, to say I struggled would be an understatement. I tried, but I just couldn’t ignore the way the dialogue and inner ramblings felt forced rather than authentic and that just frustrated me.

Example:
~ “They were always offerin’ it. But the runnin’ of the ranch had been left to me. Our dad had spent a lotta time teachin’ me how to keep things goin’. He’d expected me to take the reins. He might be dead, but I had no intention of lettin’ him down. My brothers had no idea what it took to run the ranch, apart from the actual trainin’ of the horses.”

A couple paragraphs later:
“Pops never really recovered from losin’ ’em, so that was about the time I began workin’ the land and the horses with my dad. My brothers came on board as they got older, but the runnin’ of things had fallen to me. I was the oldest. I’d been jugglin’ everything on my own for the better part of two years, tryin’ to find ways to stretch our money and expand the business, but things were changin’ for farms and ranches, and times were tight.”

I was looking forward to spending time with some sexy cowboys, but I just couldn’t get engaged with the characters because of the writing style.

Sadly, I have to call it quits.

I found me a hot cowboy, and his name is Jack Cade!
When Greta asked me to read her book and give her my honest opinion,i immediately said yes.
Because not only do i like finding new authors, but she’s also one of my best friends.
And i know i can always be honest with her about everything.
Including how i felt about the very first book she wrote.
So,i was more than happy to tell her I LOVED IT!

Jack and Evvie both have a lot of baggage.
Jack’s mother left when he and his 4 brothers were children, and they all have trouble trusting women.
The only exception is mrs. Mitchum, who took them under her wings.

Evvie has been alone for a long time, moving from one place to the next, working odd jobs until the need arises to move again.
Afraid to let people close because of what might happen.
Until she arrives in Wisper.
Mrs. Mitchum needs a helping hand during her chemo, and she’s the one that’s going to make things easier for her.
When she meets her at the hospital,Jack’s there, too.
Waiting for his brother Kevin, who broke his leg.
Hearing that mrs. Mitchum needs a place to stay during her chemo,he feels the obvious choice is the Cade ranch.
And apparently Evvie’s coming with her.

All too soon, they both feel an attraction.
But Jack senses she’s keeping secrets.
Meaning he can’t trust her, just like every woman he knows.
Evvie falls for Jack, but she knows she shouldn’t. She can’t let him in,it can’t go anywhere.
It would be better if she left.....

Can these two damaged souls find a way to help eachother heal?
Has Evvie finally found a place she can stay?
And doesJack have it in him to convince her do that with him?

This was a story that had all the ingredients to make you want to keep reading.
Until the last page, until you can finally breathe again knowing they are both in a very good place.
Good thing Jack has 4 brothers, because i want to hear more from Greta!

This was a great story, Jack and Evvie both have scars that are hidden but together they are amazing. What Evvie had been through and still going through will pull your heart strings. Jack has his own struggles going on not to mention trying to keep the ranch going. I loved the brothers too can't wait to read more about them. The way they all love Ma just shows how "sweet" they are. This was a great start to a series! Thank you Greta for taking me on this journey !!!

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review!

This is the first book in The Cade Ranch Series and features Jack and Everlea. Jack’s horse ranch is struggling, the one woman in his life he cares for is going through chemo again, and there isn’t much that makes him smile these days since his mother up and left when he was a young boy. Until Everlea.

Everlea comes smashing into Jack’s life...literally. She got the concussion to prove it. ‘Stuck’ at the ranch with Jack while she recovers, it becomes evident that there is a brewing chemistry between them but she is running from something. Jack doesn’t want to watch another woman run away and Everlea doesn’t want anyone to get hurt because of her. However, the more time they spend together the more their brick walls start crumbling.

Everlea is a quiet strength, independent, fiercely guarded and resourceful. She carries these traits like body armor never letting anyone or anything pierce it or get too close. But beneath all that thick skin is a vulnerable woman who is scared. What I love most about Everlea is her authenticity as a heroine. Greta did an excellent job at creating a realistic character that I could relate to and sympathize with.

Jack was broody, quiet, suspicious and a cowboy. There is something so sexy about a cowboy...especially one that wears shirts that hug all those delicious muscles. Jack was a complex character and I liked getting to see him fall for Everlea. Sometimes he was a butthole, using cutting words to hide the intense passion and vulnerability that he actually feels but it somehow made him more endearing. The progression of Everlea and Jack’s relationship was honest and their chemistry was palpable. Boy was it HOT. Their reasons for keeping people at a distance are justifiable but they begin to find that maybe keeping each other at arms length is more damaging than helpful. Is it possible they could be stronger together? Can Everlea and Jack trust each other enough to share their secrets? Their fears? Can Jack help Everlea...can they start a life together despite the danger surrounding Everlea?

This story was FULL of emotion and it’s obvious that a lot of time and thoughtfulness went into creating this world and these characters. The romance alongside the suspenseful plot allowed for the perfect amount of angst. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the mystery to unravel on the danger surrounding Everlea. For two people that have had their fair share of heartache, their road to a HEA was well deserved and fought for. I loved the dynamic Greta created between the brothers - a mixture of teasing banter and unwavering love and loyalty. I can’t wait to get my hands on their stories.

Overall, I can count on one hand how many books have made me tear up and this one made the list. Greta wrote in such a way that I felt like I was right there. I felt Jake’s passion and pain, Everlea’s fear and turmoil, their love and connection. The story’s climactic point ripped my heart out and put it back together. I love when a story sucks me in and brings out a rainbow of emotions and this story did just that. And that epilogue...slayed me. I highly recommend!

5 shiny stars!!

Beautiful.
Heartbreaking.
Absolutely mesmerizing.
Unputdownable.

But I did.
I wept by the end. Like a baby.

My god, the way Jack loved Evvie!!!
Sweet baby jesus in the manger!

That ending broke my heart in half and then put it back together.

I loved everything about this book.
I loved Jack. I loved Evvie. Especially Evvie, she was one of my favourite heroine's ever.
The chemistry between them was simply delicious, the push and pull?
Oh, yeah...
And that suspense element?
My sweet lord, that was an absolute perfection!

My absolute winner this month and probably this year!

I'm already on book 2 Broken.

ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND!!!!
.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

reread: 01/02/2025

Still one of my faves, ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!!

"Please don’t take her away from me.”
“Jack, fucking put her down!” he bellowed, and he ripped Evvie outta my arms. He laid her in the mud, and I felt my connection to her break, all her shimmerin’ strings and threads that had wound their way through me, from her to me, from the first moment I’d laid my eyes on her. My hands shook and I reached out, frantic, tryin’ to pick her back up, tryin’ to reconnect ’em. To make ’em grow back. I pushed my brother’s hands away from her.
“Dean. Please.” I tried again, but my arms and legs wouldn’t move, and I fought to get free till I realized Finn had wrapped his body around mine to stop me."

Burned, Book one in The Cade Ranch Series, is a beautifully written small town cowboy romance story that I absolutely devoured from the first page until the very last word.
Jack and Everlea's steamy, humorous, and suspenseful story took me on an equally heartbreaking and heartwarming journey about trust, loss, insecurities, family and fighting for what you deserve; happiness, love and a forever home.
Their story had my heart both aching and warming, and me laughing, swooning, hot and bothered, needing some tissues, and holding my breath with anticipation.
The secondary characters were perfection. Ma the hilarious, take no crap grandma figure in their lives was everything, and the remaining Cade brothers are unique, loveable, hilarious, and intriguing. I can't wait for more from this series and to see each brother get their story and a HEA.

A Highly Recommended Read!!

Ok so Greta Rose West might have convinced me to read a book with cowboys and actually make me not want to put the book down. #shocked. I am not a fan of cowboys, but I had no issues with this one at all!

I am officially invested in the cade ranch and its 5 cade brothers!!! 🥰😍🥵

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In this book we get the back story about the ranch and get introduced to its occupants, human and horse alike. Sammy 🐎 has my heart ❤️

The eldest and "brother incharge" Jack meets the love of his life, Everlea, in an epic drama filled, suspenseful, sweet, hot, sexy, mysterious, steamy, chemistry filled, cute way. Evvie has a past that she is running 🏃‍♀️ (literally) away from and she stumbles right into the brick wall that is Jack and his life. She is afraid to get close to anyone because she doesn't want her crazy psycho stalker to kill any more people she loves. Jack on the other hand has built such large walls since everyone he loves ends up walking away. In this book they learn to love and survive a lot of heartache to finally come together in the end. All I have to say is WHAT A JOURNEY! I absolutely loved reading every bit of it.

Story - 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Characters - m/ F 4 💙💖💙💖
Violence - 1🩸
Spice - 3🌶🌶🌶
Triggers - None that I could pick up on

The cade boys are so much fun. Jack, Dean, Fin, Jay and Kevin are just too cute for words. They are so close, connect and just all around good natured. I love them! ❤️ I cannot wait to read more and see how the others find their person.

💯 recommend reading this book and off I go into the next so I can read about my quiet, broody Cade brother, Dean.

Greta Rose West is your new favorite small-town cowboy romance author - trust me. :) She writes compelling, real characters with so many challenges that you can't possibly imagine how they're going to get their HEA - and then they do!

Jack and Evvie's story was heaps of angst, mixed with some heavy suspense, and flavored with copious amounts of delicious, steamy SPICE. Cade Ranch and the town of Wisper are so well envisioned that I feel like I've been there, and like Evvie, I never want to leave!

In an attempt to decompress after a heavier read I dove into the depths of my kindle and pulled out one of the hundreds of free books I have accumulated. I wanted easy and fun but this gave nothing with bouts of annoyance and frustration. Everlea has been on the run, from what or who we don’t know at first, and ends up at Cade ranch through a series of unfortunate events. I understood Jack’s mistrust of her in the beginning. She was obviously keeping secrets but when he realized she was hiding and her secrets were to protect herself he was mad at her for lying. Dude, she has known you for a day and is obviously terrified, she doesn’t owe you anything. A lot of hot and cold behavior I wasn’t a fan of from both main characters. The reason she was running and why she couldn’t tell anyone felt weak. WHEN HE LEAVES HER IN THE HOSPITAL ALONE!!! Just nope!

This is the first book in The Cade Ranch Series and features Jack and Everlea as the main characters. Everlea has been running and moving all over the country for years, never safe and always alone. Meanwhile, Jack and his brothers have been struggling to keep their ranch afloat your years. Suddenly, Everlea is thrown into their lives by “Ma.” Ma is the brother’s neighbor and is more like family. Ma meddles and figures out a way to move herself and Everlea onto the ranch. Jack finds his house invaded with two women and more complications than he realizes.

Jack and Everlea both have troubled pasts that get in the way of their potential relationship. Through miscommunications, masked emotions, and secrets, Jack and Everlea have to sort through their pasts to find each other. A slow burn has begun between the two of them that cannot be smothered. Meanwhile, there is a sinister monster lurking throughout the novel, leaving a level of suspense that never goes away.

There were several aspects of the novel that I loved. First, it was not strictly a “damsel in distress story.” Both Jack and Everlea have their own demons to face. Also, the sex scenes in this book were fantastic! They were well-written and spicy. I also loved all of Jack’s brothers, especially Finn. The brothers added a fun element to the story and left the door open for each of them to have their own sequel.

I recommend this novel to anyone who loves romance books with well-written sex scenes, elements of suspense, and all of the horses and cowboy love you could want.

**Fans self** Hoo boy, I just put down Burned, my first book by Greta Rose West and my first-ever “cowboy romance” and all I can say is that it won’t be the last… on either account!

I just love a good love story about two broken hearts finding their missing pieces and finally letting love put them back together. This particular story (which, btw, is beautifully written and expertly paced) centres around ruggedly handsome (read: hot) Jack, the eldest of the Cade brothers, and the only one still bearing the painful memory of being abandoned by the first woman he ever loved, and Everlea, a sweet and feisty but deeply wounded woman trying to outrun the terror of her past.

Greta Rose West is a master storyteller and her writing style, including Jack’s endearing rural dialect, kept me thoroughly engaged from chapter one through to the heart-pounding conclusion. I felt totally invested in the outcome of this story, and that’s because she has created a world with believable characters with intense chemistry and big-time potential. Yes, the romance factor is wonderful, but ohhh just you wait until she ratchets up the tension and suspense. Whoa! She really blows the doors off with a thrilling ending and finally, a cathartic, completely sighworthy conclusion that safely brings this ride to a slow, satisfying stop.

Okay, I’m hooked Ms. West. Don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here saddling up for the next Cade brother in the Cade Ranch series. Giddy up.

Burned is the first book in the Cade Ranch Series by New to me author Greta Rose West. At first, I thought this was a contemporary,  sort of enemies to lovers romance. Ranch owner, and oldest Cade brother of 5, Jack, is at the hospital with his brother Kevin after an accident leaves Kevin with a broken leg. Jack sees the older woman who had been like a mother to him there, and she is ill.
When Jack comes to pick her up to take her and her caregiver home, her caregiver turns out to be a young woman named Eveline who trips and is knocked out. Now, Jack has to take both of them home with him, and he's not happy.
Eveline is on the run from a monster,  and while Jack starts to shed his cranky demeanor and give in to his attraction,  he knows Evie is keeping secrets. She's ready to run again.
This book turns into quite the romantic suspense,  and you just want to see Eveline and Jack together, but the monster following her is a mounting problem that will take the whole Cade clan. I honestly stayed up all night just to finish this book,  and⁹ luckily, it's the first in a series.

Jackson Cade is officially my cowboy book boyfriend. The characters in this book draw you in from the first page. I loved Jack's grumpiness, and the way his attraction to Everlea made him even more grumpy. But when they both give in to their desires, my kindle almost melted. It was so hot. I wasn't expecting the suspenseful parts of this book and was pleasantly surprised by it. It gave the story even more depth, and I was rooting for the main characters while my heart was breaking for what they had to go through. Super compelling, and a must read! I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series for some more hot cowboy fun!

There were parts of this book that were 5-star good. What ruined the book for me, though, was the author's attempts at dialect for the characters' dialogs. Even their thoughts to themselves were littered with dropped g's (fixin', lookin', thinkin') and too many "ain't"s. It was disruptive, pulling me out of the story. If the dialect attempts were cleaned up, this would have been a solid 4½ stars. As it was, I was just relieved to finish it. Much as I'd love to find out the other brothers' stories, I won't be continuing this series.

This book by new to me author Greta Rose West is pretty good read with lots of suspense.

Everlea or Eve is a young woman who has been in hell for a number of years now. We don’t find out how bad it’s been for her until the last quarter of the book so I’m not going to give it away but she’s being hunted by a monster and can’t afford to stay in one place long and make any friends. She’s currently living in this small town and is planning on helping an older woman get through her third round of chemo treatments but through a series of events, ends up staying on a ranch along with her charge at the ranch house of four brothers running the ranch.

She is very attracted to the oldest brother Jack and he is just as attracted to Jack but she only has a very limited time there before she has to run again before the monster finds her and harms the people she’s coming to care a great deal for. And Jack isn’t about to develop feelings for Evie. His mother abandoned her family when he was still quite young and he doesn’t trust women and refuses to have any kind of relationship with any women. Plus he can tell Evie is hiding something serious and can tell she’s about to bolt.

But the more they get to know each other, the harder it is to stick to their plans. So will Evie ever open up to Jack and tell him what’s haunting him? And can Jack stick to his guns about not getting involved as he gets to know her more and sees what a special person she is? The author tells a very good story and I found it hard to put this book down. Both Jack and Evie are very good characters and I really got invested in their story. This is the first book in a series about each of the brothers and I’m really wanting to read the other books now. I’m most impressed with this author.

So. Good. 👏🏻

There was truly a little bit of everything in here: spicy spice, tons of suspense, action, found family, hot cowboys, slow burn/tension, amazing characters, and so many emotions and so much love. It was so sweet to watch Jack's emotional growth throughout the story and to see how he evolves and learns to open up his heart and life to not only Evvie, but to his own family too. And Miss Evvie..my goodness what an incredible FMC. Not only was she beautiful inside and out with a heart of gold, but she's strong in ways she doesn't even realize or see in herself. She's been through so much and has experienced so much trauma, yet she still had such a beautiful soul. Her journey to healing and accepting love into her life was heartwarming. I adored both her and Jack. Can't forget sweet Ma and the rest of the boys in the Cade Family, who were also equally as amazing (and incredibly gorgeous too-I see you Finn). I LOVE the entire Cade family and would give anything to spend time at the Cade ranch hanging out with all of them, eating Finn's cooking, and listening to Evvie play the piano. This story truly had me flying through it from beginning to end and I cannot recommend it enough. If you're a fan of suspense and cowboy romances, this is a must read!

Some TW to keep in mind though, since there are some heavy topics involved ❣️

Jack Cade has kept his distance and not let himself to get close to anyone since his mother left.
Everlea ‘Evvie’ Donovan has ended up in Whisper, but she has secrets and knows not to let anyone get close.

Mrs ‘Ma’ Mitchum the woman Jack and his brothers refer to as their adopted mother is sick and needing chemo. When Jack sees her at the hospital, he immediately offers to help in any way. Due to an unfortunate accident when Jack returns for Ma it becomes evident, he will need to take both Ma and the woman taking care of her back to the Wyoming horse ranch he owns with his brother. Evvie and Jack’s connection is real but as suspicions arise and trust is questions Jack will need to find the truth and Evvie will need to learn to let him in before it’s too late.

Such a great read with exciting characters and an engaging story I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

STEAM: 🔥🔥🔥

This came highly recommended to me, and it was perfect timing because watching Yellowstone had me hankering for a good cowboy romance.

This hit the spot.

Everlea has a secret, and until it catches up to her, she is trying to do the best she can while she is in Wisper. Volunteering at the hospital puts her in the path of Jack Cade, and while she is all sorts of attracted to him, her secret keeps her from getting too attached. Jack has his own secrets and reasons for not caving into his own attraction to Eve. With a struggling ranch and four brothers that are quite a handful, can you blame him?

This was spot-on for the kind of Yellowstone vibes I was looking for (with extra spice because heaven forbid Taylor Sheridan writes steamy scenes 😂). I appreciated the details Greta Rose West included about taking care of a horse ranch; I felt like the reader was in Eve's shoes as she was learning. I very much enjoyed the romantic suspense. It had me on the edge of my seat, and I love that there was a technology aspect integrated with it.

I love Jack and Eve. Jack is a fantastic alpha-roll that needed to be told that he can be loved. He might be tough, quiet, and broody, but he is also caring and vulnerable. Eve might be in danger from her secrets, and where she lacks in physicality, she makes up for with resilience and emotional strength. The balance in their connection makes for a fantastic chemistry.

I cannot wait to dive into the series and the other Cade brothers, who were hilarious and charming in this one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Burned by Greta Rose West is the first novel in the Cade Ranch series that introduces the five Cade brother who own a struggling Wyoming horse ranch. Jack, the eldest brother, seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders taking care of the ranch, four younger brothers and an adopted mother who is going through chemo. Then there is Everlea who literally stumbles into their lives and turn things upside down, especially for Jack. He has no time for a woman in his life but suddenly she consumes his every thought. But she is concealing a dangerous threat that could place them all in peril. Her instinct is to run but her heart will not let her walk away from the man she has fallen in love with. Will the evil she has so desperately tried to run from finally catch up to her? Could love cost her her life as well as the lives of those she now considers family?⠀

I was thoroughly captured by this stellar romance that reads like a thriller. The pages were filled with heart-pounding suspense, humor, slow-burn romance and steamy passion. The characters are well drawn and authentic and through their turmoil and fear we can feel their genuine and raw emotions. After reading this book I can honestly say that I am Greta Rose West fan and anxiously look forward to exploring the rest of this series. Hopefully we learn about the remaining Cade brothers. ⠀

First time reading a Greta Rose West book and it certainly won’t be the last!! I’m not sure what I expected but it wasn’t this, Burned was full of suspense, romance, laugh out loud moments. I reckon I experienced every emotion reading this book, poor Everlea has had a traumatic past which is still chasing her. She ends up in a small town called Wisper where she meets Mrs Mitchum and becomes her support/carer (I’ll be honest this had me worried, Mrs Mitchum is going through chemo, as it touch’s too close to home for me I nearly put the book down as I didn’t think I could read about her journey, but I’m so glad I didn’t, as she becomes my favourite character!) Mrs Mitchum is a huge character who the Cade brothers call “Ma” she did make me laugh with her matchmaking skills.
Now…Jack! Holy Hotness Jack! What’s not to love about a grumpy cowboy, who runs the family ranch, feels pressure of being head of the family after the brothers father died, and their mum left when he was only young, he doesn’t believe in love…until Everlea literally stumbles into him 😂

Great romance, intense feelings, suspenseful storyline! Perfect 5 star read!

Burned was definitely a steamy romance. The love shines through for Evie and Jack on his family horse ranch. And the drama and suspense escalate as she is trying to avoid a stalker who chases her everywhere she goes. I liked all the 5 cade brothers with their different personalities and Jack was a strong head-of-family man who feels responsible for everyone and everything. The middle of the book drags a little as the tension mounts for Evie and she won't share her fears with the others. I had a few problems with the plot line of Evie being stalked across the country. It was a little hard to believe that any stalker would be that dedicated, persistent and clever. Also, for a horse ranch that keeps all the boys busy and is barely able to make ends meet, they also seem to have a lot of spare time and money. But the love story was true and compelling and I love a strong alpha coming to protect his woman.

I really liked This book I was sold from the very beginning. It’s a cowboy romance . Jack was taught from a young age to not trust women and to never love them but of course there’s always that one. It’s a romance with suspense some spice, and laughter. Jack has five brothers and they need to have their own story. from the beginning I knew the heroine in this book was hiding something and I needed to know what it was. I could not put this book down. It’s a must read.

I loved this book! The characters are really well developed and I felt like I was right there with them! I laughed and I even cried! I don't typically read western romance but I'm a huge Cade Ranch fan now! Can't wait to devour, ahem...read 😉 the rest of the series!

Sizzling hot romance meets chilling psychological thriller in this stunning cowboy romantic suspense.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely return to Cade Ranch to get to know the other brothers better.
