The people of Tifton, Louisiana, count their population by the clock.
Every six months, someone disappears, the body always found days later floating in Little Bayou Pond.
The FBI has no leads.
Emily Tizzano, disgraced former Chicago Police Detective, drives to Tifton to help one of the families find out the truth about the killer and get the justice they deserve. While she’s there, a five-year-old girl disappears from her home in the middle of the night...
Could she be victim fourteen?
The mystery of the missing child takes Emily on a path through murder, heartbreak and lies. Will Emily be able to outwit the FBI fast enough to solve the case, save the girl, and protect her own freedom?
Sat down to read a few minutes before I got busy with the my yard work. Well needless to say the day is over and nothing got done. This series was engrossing, so filled with anxious moments that I could not stop reading. On the edge feeling. Great series. Each story independent. The group Emily has helping her is complex group of tech geniuses. Hopefully it won't be a long wait for the next edition. Keep 'em coming.
Book three in the series and the most unsettling case yet! Not officially a cold case but intriguing enough for Emily to investigate. Bodies keep turning up every six months and the local police don’t seem to be able to cope with what is a serial killer. Even the FBI can’t solve this one and just turn up every six months when a new body is found.
This is book three of the Detective Emily Tizzano Vigilante Justice Thriller series and sees Emily with no case to work after her last difficult case. That is until Mike comes round and asks her to look into a case of a serial killer who is targeting people from the small town of Tifton, Louisiana. One victim is killed every six months and this has been happening for at least seven years, if not longer. The small town police department weren’t qualified or experienced enough to deal with these cases and called in the FBI early on. But all the FBI have done is turn up once a new victim has found, but only the person’s torso is ever found, always dumped in the same local Little Bayou Pond! Mike has also brought in another computer expert friend, Flynn, with him and the two of them have been looking into on unsolved murder chatrooms. They want Emily to take the case, even though this is the opposite to the way she would normally take a case. Usually she would take a case after a letter or email from a victim or relative of one. Mike has been in touch, in the chatroom, with the brother of one of the victims, as the two men manage to persuade her to go and speak to him. She decides to drive, so she will be able to have her gun with her, but it is a very long drive. There is a bed & breakfast right in the town and she arrives a couple of days before the next victim should be taken. The only thing she didn’t really think about was the fact the FBI would also stay there, as it was close to the action!
Bradley’s brother Sean was body five-one and he has become obsessed with finding who the killer is and getting justice for his brother. To put an end to the constant worry all the inhabitants of Tifton have to deal with, hanging over their heads twice a year! The FBI roll in twice a year, but after being in town a few days, they then leave and seem to be no closer to finding and stopping the killer, before they pick another victim. Emily’s job is made even more difficult by the complete lack of evidence or motive and trying to ensure she doesn’t get the attention of the FBI, especially their lead agent. She is a bit worried about how much information about the victims and the crimes that Bradley has gathered in his garage. It even manages to weird her out. When a five year old girl is taken from her bed, in the middle of the night, most try to think it must be a coincidence, as the killer has never targeted a child before. To think about what the killer will do to that child is not something Emily even wants to consider. She needs to find this young girl, before the killer carries out his evil deed. Emily is obviously from out of town, having brought her own vehicle with her, something she may need to reconsider if she ever takes on another case. She needs to protect her identity from the FBI, but stop the killer before victim fourteen dies. A case where she needs a bit of local knowledge and contacts to keep her freedom, whilst gaining justice for the town and two of the relatives she is personally involved with. A very difficult case for Emily to undertake and one which comes close to her losing her freedom! Always something different and Emily puts herself into danger each time to find the justice for those who ask for her help. Her expertise is cold cases and this has a touch of both cold case and current serial killer mode. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, after the shock visitor she finds at her door, at the end of the book! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I'm really enjoying this series by K.J. Kalis. This is my 4th of her books. The vigilante justice isn't really my thing but the actual writing style and the action is a great break from my usual genre.
In this book we're immersed in an abduction of a 5 year old from her bed while sleeping. Her abduction marks the 1st in the 7th year of torso deaths. Of course, the facts are unclear, was Lexi just abducted or is she the torso killer's next victim.
There are some facts that come up in the story that it seems should provide some clues to the FBI and local authorities, however, since they are in the 7th year the FBI is just treading water and hoping to come upon some break in the case.
Another book that you just won't want to put down.
Love this series. This would be a 5 if she would have correctly named Clement "county" Clement PARISH as we are the only state to have parishes vs counties. A Louisiana girl's pet peeve So wishing for authors to get our culture quirks right. I know we have a lot of them here. While I have a chance can I say audio book performers need to learn the difference between authentic CAJUN accents for Acadian settings and New Orleans accents for New Orleans settings vs other part of Louisiana and Mississippi for those settings. Just saying. It would make us so proud of our favorite authors! Love the characters she creates in all her series.
I’m not sure what’s up with all the positive reviews for this book, because it really sucks. It’s written in the style of someone describing what they see as they watch a movie. None of the characters have a personality at all and there is no character development. The plot is outrageously unbelievable and relies on the main character making logical leaps that are not supported by anything that the reader is aware of. On top of all that it’s riddled with grammatical errors. I wish I hadn’t stuck with it to the end because the ending sucked too.
I was hooked from the very first page. There were spelling and grammatical errors which I found very distracting. Some of the sentences had extra words, like some text was added and then the writer started over with new words but neglected to delete the extra words. I enjoyed the book immensely, but all of the errors made me stop and re-read parts. It greatly affected the flow of the narrative.
Emily, an ex police officer, worked behind the scene helping to find elusive criminals. She was asked to help find a killer that killed every six months. A little girl had been kidnapped and Emily only had 48 hours to save her. It was strange cheering for her to find the killer before the FBI found her. I liked the character development. The story kept my attention.
Just finished Victim 14. Just like the first two in the Emily Tizzano series, this one had me from beginning to end. Exciting story, neat characters and enough twists to keep an old man like me guessing. Come on K.J., now you've got to tell us about the talk Cash wanted to have with Emily. Now it's time to start the first Kat Beckman book, The Cure.
Whoa! I just finished a two day non-stop reading marathon of "Victim 14!" High octane, hop, skip and jump, hold your breath, twist and turn and don't even think about sleeping because it will nag your conscious until you get up and jump back in! I loved it! Emily Tizzano is my kind of justice warrior! Read it!!
Raging storm, warped mind of a serial killer, a life on the line!
Justice is not always found in a court of law. Former cop, and computer geeks work together. Lots of twists and turns in this wild, page turning story. Death every six months visits the small town. Who would be next?
I could not put this book down. Detective Emily is smart, wants the best for the family of the victim and won't stop till she solves the case. The people she allowed to help her are awesome too. Looking forward to the next book!
High 3 again. I don't think Emily achieved much in this one, aside from dispatch the bad guy. Given that the FBI got there moments after she did, there wasn't even a life or death struggle for Lexi in the flooding basement. 🤷🏻♀️ it could have been better.
Just finished the third book in the series, all read in the past week. That should say a lot. Emily is an intriguing maim character. Mike and his friends add well to the cast. All crime fiction fans would enjoy this series.
I thought this book was bad compared to the other Emily Tizzano books. First, she spends 50% of the book worried about the FBI discovering who she is. What is the big deal? She did nothing wrong until the end. And she didn't even solve the crime. She only beat the FBI to the crime scene.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don't like the mental pictures provided in the written descriptions. I am going to skip reading this book. As far as I am concerned I do not read in order to be horrified, I enjoy the process of the finding of the culprit.
Emily is after a serial killer that's been at it for over seven years. While different than her norm it has a cold case part as well as a active part. She has to stay out of the FBIs way as well. Will she win
The book was good not great. It was enjoyable to read but it didn't grab me in. The plot was good. Characters were also good. Just not great. I will read more by this author to see what else she can come up with.
Victim 14 started slowly as you got to know the characters. Then the tempo picked up. The ending was a true thriller. I highly recommend Victim 14 for all of you who love thrillers.
Emily can't possibly solve this case while, at the same time, trying to avoid recognition by the FBI...or can she? Who can she trust? Oh, and throw in other big obstacles along the way! Make time to read this book. It's unputdownable, and time is ticking.
Emily is a reluctant participant in trying to solve a serial murder case until a little girl is taken. Time is ticking will she or the FBI get to the girl in time to save her from a monster.
The storyline was a little frustrating from the perspective of a disgraced detective working an active case that the FBI were also working. Why was she a disgraced detective? Maybe that was explained earlier in the series. Otherwise a good read
These stories really keep you reading! I love how Emily and Mike work together solving crimes. I have now read three books in this series and am hunger ing to read more!
I’m not sure if it was because I read this as a standalone, but this was extremely mediocre. It was your stereotypical police procedural and I just wasn’t invested in anyone or anything. It’s getting one star because it was a quick read.
