The Rise of America: Remaking the World Order

Rate this book
As a new president takes office in 2021, America is deeply divided politically and socially, while the economy seems precariously balanced on increasingly shaky legs.

Doom and gloom is the predominant sentiment in America. It has become widely accepted within the investment, political, and media sectors that America is on the decline and that China will drive the global agenda in the 21st century.

To which I say, not so fast. This book carefully examines the trends and actual hard data from the economic, geopolitical, financial, and demographic spheres and comes to an inescapable conclusion: America’s future has never been brighter.

Forged in the 20th century, America’s leadership role will expand in the 21st century, resulting in a substantial rise in the standard of living, not just for Americans but also across the world.

Marin Katusa

Marin Katusa is one of the leading experts on—and most successful portfolio managers in—the energy and resource exploration sectors.

Katusa has rubbed elbows with energy ministers, generals, oligarchs, and billionaires all over the world. He’s strapped on a flak jacket to survey lucrative projects in Russia, Iraq, Ukraine, Kuwait, Mongolia, Kosovo, Colombia, and many other dangerous yet resource-rich jurisdictions that require the protection of heavily armed private security forces.

Starting out as a mathematics professor, Katusa left academics to apply his models to portfolio management. His funds are among the top-performing in the resource sector over the last five years in Canada. He’s a regular contributor to the Business News Network (BNN), and has been interviewed by global media outlets such as CNBC, RT, CBC, Bloomberg, and Forbes.

Katusa first became interested in the energy sector through investing. He began in mining, shifted to Uranium, and began to see the unconventional energy sector as a much bigger story.

Since 2007, Katusa has been serving as the chief energy investment strategist for Casey Research. He is one of the most active financiers for early-stage, junior resource companies in Canada, and was the lead financier in the first two financings for Cuadrilla Resources, now one of the largest and most successful unconventional natural-gas plays in the UK. He also structured the financing and the sale of Turkana and the world-class 10BB oil block in Kenya to Africa Oil, a Lundin-held company with a market capitalization of over C$2 billion. Katusa is a founding director of Copper Mountain, Canada’s third-largest copper mine.

Over the years, Katusa has been involved in raising over C$1 billion in capital for early-stage and producing resource companies.

Katusa speaks fluent Serbian and Croatian, and is conversant in Russian. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, he lives in Vancouver.

I'm a fan of the author's work. Although his background is as a geologist, Marin has been very successful in the investment space, particularly as it pertains to the precious metals industry. And because commodity investment is heavily dependent on what is happening at a macro level, to be profitable as an investor one needs a strong sense for macro influences that (in addition to fundamental supply / demand conditions) are the primary drivers of long-term pricing movement. Again, Marin has a better overall understanding (IMO) of macro conditions than other so-called economic experts.

This book delves into the somewhat obscure world of monetary policy. While those unfamiliar with the workings of the Federal Reserve and Treasury, how they "collaborate" and how their actions impact everything from financial assets (stocks, bonds, real estate) to budget deficits and inflation, may find this reading somewhat overwhelming, it is well worth the thought exercise. Given what we as a nation are currently experiencing (2022), with the potential onset of stagflation, this book could not be more timely.

Much of The Rise of America addresses the policy of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), conceptually the notion that the tax revenues generated by our government have no bearing on the determination of how much it should spend in a given year (i.e., deficits don't matter). Marin paints a somewhat optimistic view of what will happen if our policy makers decide to take that leap of faith. However, MMT has never been tried, and I have a deep fear of its possible consequences to current taxpayers and their decedents.

Interesting chapters about SWAP systems, MMT, and some brief history of money in general.

Written for the layman it's an easy read and introduction to some more complex topics. Similar vibes to Creature of Jekyl Island.

I got the book because the author was doing a podcast about Carbon Credits while plugging this book. I see no info on CC which is a real bummer because that's the scam I wanted more info about. The comments on the podcast ep threw a lot of shade on this guy's credibility and I'm inclined to agree with them.

The forward was written by Robert Kiyosaki who is a great children's book author, but not much else.

To get the online chapter (which has some info on Carbon credits) you have to scan a QR code and sign up for his email news letter. (Hint, you can put in a fake email) Say what you will about Katusa, he's a fantastic salesman. And I certainly don't mean that as a compliment.

3 stars because of the SWAP chapter was new info and I got the book for free. I expected it priced at $30 like similar books but was only $19 so that's a bonus. Might be worth it if you know nothing of global finance markets.

Eye opened and to the point. Must read

I highly recommend this book. Gives a great overview of the author's macro view of how the world is shaping out in this century. Katusa is a great mind who knows how commodities and the flows of goods and services work. Ayone interested in economics or geopolitics would do well to read this book

Katusa makes a good case for the argument that the US is on its way up, and not on the way out. This book has many great counterpoints to the mainstream opinion that the US is currently in terminal decline. The SWAP lines thing is particularly interesting.

Not what you usually read about MMT

I’ve read a lot of things about MMT. Marin has a more optimistic spin on it than what I usually read. I hope he is right!

This book is worth reading even if you don't agree with everything that Marin forecasts.
He explains things in a very easy to understand manner and his thesis on carbon credits is interesting. His thesis on view on declining oil is shaky in my opinion and assumes that government intervention and renewables will offset the supply-demand deficit. Appendix IV was my favourite chapter it highlights his framework in investing in the natural resource sector.

But what if one ‘expert’, who makes his money from his own words, said The Rise Of America is something to come and not memories of the past…..

What if this ‘expert’ defies all the naysayers and points out what is really going on in the area of natural resources and exploitation of said resources…..

What if he explains the ins and outs of what is really going on with economies of the world, especially here in America….

Marin Katusa does exactly that in his work The Rise Of America Remaking The World Order. And it makes for a very interesting read. Most of us might think that economics and investing are truly beyond our understanding, as Katusa points out some of it is beyond the understanding of those in the middle of the wheeling and dealing as well. Thus, while you may not completely understand all the content of this work, you should understand enough to make you sit up and take notice of what you see and read in the news in a different light.

This book offers a lot to think about: money, energy, resources, and sustainability, all with a contrarian and plausibly optimistic view of the future. The author is a natural resources investor, and extremely pragmatic: "it’s immaterial what I (or anyone else, for that matter) think should be. We have what is. That’s our reality. I neither deny it nor pray for something better. Remember my first principle: I am an investor by trade, and I always play the hand I’m dealt, not the one I wish I had."

It grabbed my attention from beginning to end. Like or dislike, agree or disagree, it will make you think.
