From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes this irresistible treat, a charming and jaunty graphic novel, based on story snippets peppered throughout a number of her books. Originally mentioned in It’s in His Kiss—one of the Bridgerton novels which inspired the smash Netflix series, Bridgerton—Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron is finally told here in its entirety for the first time.
A madcap romantic adventure, Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron has appeared in several Julia Quinn novels and enthralled some of her most beloved characters. Now, this delicious tale of love and peril is available for everyone to enjoy in this wonderfully unconventional graphic novel.
Born into a happy family that is tragically ravaged by smallpox, Miss Priscilla Butterworth uses her wits to survive a series of outlandish trials. Cruelly separated from her beloved mother and grandmother, the young girl is sent to live with a callous aunt who forces her to work for her keep. Eventually, the clever and tenderhearted Miss Butterworth makes her escape... a daring journey into the unknown that unexpectedly leads her to the “mad” baron and a lifetime of love.
Delightfully illustrated by Violet Charles, told in Julia Quinn’s playful voice, Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron is a high-spirited nineteenth-century romp that will entertain and enchant modern readers.
#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.
A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.
The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.
Entertaining and outrageous at times but that’s part of the fun. My favorites are the puns. Not too much romance but I didn’t mind. If you’ve read Julia Quinn’s books (It’s in His Kiss from the Bridgertons, the Smith-Smythes and Bevelstokes series), then you would have seen snippets of this book in those books.
I honestly thought this book was so weird in the beginning but the love story and the villain plot picked up towards the later half and bumped up my rating significantly
I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher (Avon Books) for promotional purposes.
Let me preface this review by saying that I am not familiar with Miss Butterworth. I’ve only read 1 Julia Quinn book (The Duke and I) and have seen both seasons of Bridgerton. I enjoyed both the book and the show. However, neither of those reference Miss Butterworth. Because of that, I did not know what to expect in regards to this story. Initially, I had thought it would be more Bridgerton-like.
This was a very absurd graphic novel. It was sort of insane, but that was the point. The story was a little gruesome/morbid at times, which I was not expecting. I found the whole story to be a bit strange and I didn’t necessarily love it (nor did I completely hate it). It was just okay for me. I probably would have liked it better if I was more familiar with Miss Butterworth.
The art style is very cute and cartoon like and worked well for the story. Like I said the book was a little morbid at times, but the art kept it more humorous and light.
I did love the “In Memoriam” at the end. In case you didn’t know, the illustrator, Violet Charles, was Julia Quinn’s younger sister who tragically passed away in 2021. Julia wrote a beautiful tribute to her sister and I am glad that this collaboration between them was able to be published.
Overall, if you know more about Miss Butterworth from Julia Quinn’s other books, you’ll probably enjoy this one!
Note that this rating, in this special case, does not convey my feelings about this graphic novel.
The story behind this novel, cannot even be quantified or qualified. Julia Quinn's late sister illustrated this book and some of the plot. She died in a tragic car accident alongside JQ's father and later the sister's husband due to complications. That's incredibly devastating and I'm suck at handling these feelings.
Won't say anything though about the book other than it's weird. VERY weird.
Don't go into this graphic novel after reading Julia Quinn's other novels expecting this to be similar. The only similarities that this book shares with her other works is that this story is mentioned in a couple of her books. That is where the similarities end and if you know that going into this graphic novel, you may enjoy it more.
This graphic novel was fun and wildly hilarious causing me to actually laugh out loud multiple times. I also absolutely loved the illustrative style and colour pallet that was used.
As intended, I had such a blast while reading this. It's a quick and wild read that definitely left an impression.
This is just brilliant! So funny and clever. I was excited in anticipation for this book and it exceeded my already high expectations.
It works so well as a graphic novel and I particularly love the thought bubbles.
I also wanted to say, I am so sorry for the loss of Julia Quinn’s sister Violet Charles, who illustrated and co-authored the book. What a lovely lady and what a great legacy to leave.
Thank you Julia Quinn and Violet Charles for an amazing book.
I believe this was a book that some of the characters in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series were reading. It was billed as a humorous adventure. I didn't see the humor in it. I found it rather strange and morbid. The first part of the story reminded me of Cinderella, but it went downhill from there. I did enjoy the illustrations which were done by the author's late sister. My rating: 2 Stars.
I have no idea what came over me to check this out on Libby, but it was maybe the worst decision I’ve ever made. Truly an atrocious story. I have no words and definitely was way too confused. Demonic pigeons? Really??
This graphic novel is a beloved gift for Julia Quinn's novels fans. Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron is a fictional novel that appears in several of Quinn's romance books, including IT'S IN HIS KISS, WHAT HAPPENS IN LONDON, TEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT YOU, JUST LIKE HEAVEN, and THE SUM OF ALL KISSES. The fictional novel is intentionally ridiculous, with crazy storylines and melodrama galore. For years, fans have clamored for a real version of the novel. Realistically, however, such a novel would be wretched. A great compromise is this graphic novel. Short enough to be easily read and tolerated, incredibly funny, and with twists and turns that are just crazy and silly.
I don't know if people who have never read the Quinn novels would enjoy this book, but it is definitely a treat for fans of the Quinn novels. I loved it, it made me laugh, and with the crazy moments, I plan on keeping it as a treasured part of my personal library.
I meeeean....it is different from the usual fare. The problem is, it is neither a good story, nor is it a good comic. I am trying to be kind here but it is difficult to find something good to say about this book. It reads like a low effort churn-out.
Originally mentioned in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series book, It's In His Kiss, this hilarious story is finally available to read for yourself. Born into a happy family that is tragically ravaged by smallpox, Miss Priscilla Butterworth uses her wits and that little voice in her head to survive a series of madcap adventures.
I had a blast reading this outlandish graphic novel. Miss Priscilla Butterworth is the best kind of crazy and so is the rest of the supporting cast. I am delighted to mention that bees also play a big role in this story which is definitely on brand for a book in the Bridgerton-verse. The story is fast paced and silly and the illustrations are gorgeous. A graphic novel like this is just pure fun and shouldn't be taken seriously at all. A great way for me to start my month of June reading!
This was so ridiculous and so much fun, I loved every bit of it. The story was wildly improbable and hilarious, and you couldn’t help but cheer for the indefatigable Miss Butterworth. I wish it had been longer, but longer would mean no drawings and the drawings made everything so much better.
I was super eager to read this after Sarah Gorely becoming a bit of a feature throughout several other series. This was all that was promised and more - killer boars, murderous pigeons, cannibalism, poisoned gooseberries, the list of untimely endings is perfect.
