Listen, Hack/Slash is over the top, gory, sick, sexy, dumb, and fucking FUN horror that I always enjoyed.
This Deluxe Edition collects the crucial early stories that establish the entire series. Cassie Hack is a badass, sexy, emo/goth chick who is introduced as the final girl who had to kill her own undead mother, The Lunch Lady. This trauma sets her on her mission. She teams up with Vlad, a gigantic, disfigured, gas-mask-wearing hulk of a sidekick, and they go on the road murdering Slashers.
That's the basic idea. But the characters are so fun. Their dynamic, Cassie’s focused brutality contrasting with Vlad’s gentle, protective nature, is the emotional core of the book. If you love classic horror franchises like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, or even Child’s Play (yes, there's a fun Chucky crossover in this volume!), you're gonna have a blast here. It doesn't take itself serious, and that's the best part.
I will say the first story and the last story are the strongest. The opening arc, which features Cassie’s origin story and her first encounter with Vlad, is essential reading. The volume really ramps up with the "Land of Lost Toys" storyline, which introduces the disturbing concept of Child Slashers and the villain Mother Superior. There’s also a fun one where a bunch of slashers escape, and we see the early episodic hunts in stories like "Euthanized" and "Girls Gone Dead." The middle ones range from fun, to not too good. Especially one story I liked about a Slasher who kills in your dreams (Not Freddy!) but sadly the art was very rough.
Overall it’s probably a 3.5 at best but I'm awarding it a 4 cause fuck it. Tits and ass, gore, and slasher hunters is my cup of tea. If you want a comic that serves up equal parts nostalgia and modern carnage, grab this.
So 2000s, poorly aged in parts and trashy but also funny, heartfelt and cool. This series was so important to me as a teenager getting into comics and I’m glad I have the entire series to finally finish.
It really is a joy to reread these fun, funny, heartfelt, diversely drawn, comics featuring great characters in a goregeous deluxe hardcover. If you love Slasher stories both great and awesomely bad you need to pick up this series. And these hardcovers are the best way to read them.
