Kings and Sorcerers: A Short Story

Rate this book
“If you thought that there was no reason left for living after the end of the Sorcerer’s Ring series, you were wrong. In RISE OF THE DRAGONS Morgan Rice has come up with what promises to be another brilliant series, immersing us in a fantasy of trolls and dragons, of valor, honor, courage, magic and faith in your destiny. Morgan has managed again to produce a strong set of characters that make us cheer for them on every page.… Recommended for the permanent library of all readers that love a well-written fantasy.”

--Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos

This original short story takes us back in time to show us how it all began. KINGS AND SORCERERS: A SHORT STORY is a 3,000 word original short story which is a must-read complement to the #1 bestselling KINGS AND SORCERERS series, which begins with RISE OF THE DRAGONS (Book #1), a free download with over 1,000 five-star reviews. It also serves as a standalone story and also as a great introduction to the series.

In KINGS AND SORCERERS, Kyra, 15, dreams of becoming a famed warrior, like her father, even though she is the only girl in a fort of boys. As she struggles to understand her special skills, her mysterious inner power, she realizes she is different than the others. But a secret is being kept from her about her birth and the prophecy surrounding her, leaving her to wonder who she really is. Just as Kyra is coming of age, the local lord comes to take her away. Her father wants to wed her off to save her. Kyra, though, refuses, and she quests on her own, into a dangerous wood, where she encounters a wounded dragon—and ignites a series of events that will change the kingdom forever. 15 year old Alec, meanwhile, sacrifices for his brother, taking his place in the draft, and is carted off to The Flames, a wall of flames a hundred feet high that wards off the army of Trolls to the east. On the far side of the kingdom, Merk, a mercenary striving to leave behind his dark past, quests through the wood to become a Watcher of the Towers and help guard the Sword of Fire, the paranormal source of the kingdom’s power. But the Trolls want the Sword, too—and they prepare for a massive invasion that could destroy the kingdoms forever.

With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, RISE OF THE DRAGONS is a sweeping, romantic saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, action, adventure, destiny, sorcery, monsters and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, of deception, of ambition and betrayal. It is fantasy at its finest, inviting us into a world that will live with us forever, one that will appeal to all ages and genders.

“RISE OF THE DRAGONS succeeds—right from the start…. A superior fantasy…It begins, as it should, with one protagonist's struggles and moves neatly into a wider circle of knights, dragons, magic and monsters, and destiny.… All the trappings of high fantasy are here, from soldiers and battles to confrontations with self…. A recommended winner for any who enjoy epic fantasy writing fueled by powerful, believable young adult protagonists.”

Sympa. Chouette. Passable. Mais finalement pas assez agréable.

This is really not a review but more of a bitch session. Let’s start off with where I got this e-book from. I downloaded my free copy from Google as BookBub advertised it. I downloaded it because the about section said it was 250 pages long. When I opened it on my Android device, it said 35 pages long. Then when I counted the story pages, I had received 24 pages of an actual story and 44 pages of advertisements for other Morgan Rice books. That means I got 68 pages of information when it advertised 250, and only 24 of those pages were the story, just over, barely, 1/3 of the contents were the story, and 44 pages were advertisements.

Okay, now we get into more of a review and then some more bitching.

The writing itself, short as it is, is excellent, as any of Morgan Rice’s stories can be and are. The physical world-building puts you in the scene, and the ethereal world-building helps give this reader a reason why in the small immediate sense. The story is not long enough to hint at the big picture.

Yes, I know formatting will differ on various devices and thus give a different page count.

While Morgan Rice is an accomplished author, someone needs to do something about this. The page count on the about page needs to be corrected, and the advertisements need to be reduced and not duplicated. It’s disappointing to receive something like this. You are looking for something that will keep you going for a day or two, and it does not even last as long as your break. There is so much wrong with this after-thought prequel and only so much right about it. I give the writing itself high marks, but the packaging only reflects on the writing. I give this short, short, only two stars out of five stars.

Blasting through this series by Morgan Rice. Very entertaining book. A little bit of Tolkien and her other books. Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious to other people, but I’ve read a lot of Morgan Rice books in the last couple months, and one thing that seemed to really annoy me was a lot of repeated phrases. I think Morgan Rice would do well to have a better editor! The series must be read in order!

Very short story. An intro for more to come.. . It was ok but not enough to be invested. Have both the short story and part one so I will see what the next instalment has to offer…

A very quick story relating how Leo came to be Kyra's wolf. Very short and to the point, but left many unanswered questions. But a fun intro to the Kings and Sorcerers series of books
