Create A Reading Habit

This was an excellent book on developing the habit of life long reading. The book is full of great examples of what to read and how to read literature. I especially enjoyed the eight year list of recommended books. Because I read this book, I'll make some changes in my own life to allow more time for the pleasure of reading.

Marcie Stokman started a book club over 15 years ago which became The Well Read Mom's Club. This has become a nationwide club with annual book lists for local clubs to read. I discovered a club with less than 10 members last spring. I really enjoy the monthly meeting which is a deep dive into a book from Marcie's list. Each year the list has a theme. This year is The Year of the Father". The books chosen for the list have this theme and are well written, many are classics. The books chosen contain characters that have a moral compass or develop one during the story. Sex and violence are not glorified. The lists are impressive. This book explains how the club came to be and how to find good books and deepen friendships while figuring out life with your friends at book club. Deep reading promotes deeper friendships. Ah the joys of reading! Thanks to Marcie Stokman, the publisher, and NET Galley for this ARC which I really enjoyed.

This book changed my reading life. I realized while reading this book that I had several bad reading habits. This book helped me to see I needed to read quality over quantity and that I needed to read more closely. I also learned from this book that I didn’t need to only read books I “liked.” I love the author’s emphasis on reading the classics or high quality literature. It gave me the courage to tackle many challenging books on my “someday” list.
