Persie doesn’t like this whole “companion” idea. She can take care of herself; she doesn’t need some angry fighter from the Pits to keep an eye on her. But the longer she is around harsh warrior Axiocerses, the more she finds he's less rough around the edges than he lets on.
Ax is bitter about most of his life. As one of Hades’ bastard sons, he is condemned to spend his life fighting in the Pits, bringing amusement to the citizens of Elysium. And now, his older brother Uragus has saddled him with one of the newcomers. But Ax doesn’t want to fight for entertainment, and he damn sure doesn’t want to babysit some woman. What he wants is to train an army to fight for the Underworld, when the time comes. His resolve to cause rebellion in Elysium is stifled by Persie’s presence. Something about the Earth woman makes Ax want to do the right thing.
Will Axiocerses crumble his walls to let Persie in? Will Persie find the strength to join ranks in a battle she feels unprepared to fight?
An intense tale and need to read the 1st in this gripping series. Peresephone or Persie as we read, has had an unsettling series of events in her life and her friends. Currently in the care of royal princes, ruled over by a nasty queen. Persie and Ax have a tense relationship, she the aggressor for the most part. They do come together, but the queen has a hidden agenda. You do get snippets aside from the politics surrounding them all. But you become immersed in the need for results. Yet more couples have to form before a final result. A great read and need more.

Uh! WOW! I love this series! the mix that this author between myth and now and the scenarios that she writes you know it is going to be something to grasp and hold on to. Miss Monk has done a rivetting job at this story and she delivers is so smoothly. It was like I really could connect with these characters. It is fascinating that this creation could cause so much anguish! This is a thrill ride from somewhere beneath her but she definitely knows what I wanted and I am sure she knew for quite a few more of us also! Byt the way this one deserves more than the 5 stars listed! I do however recommend that you read the first book in this series before picking this one up. I Highly am endorsing this author! You will see why when you read her works!

So to be honest this was not the book I thought it would be and I have enjoyed it all the more. I did debate about getting it and I am so glad that I did. This is based on Greek mythology but it is more than that. There is a lot of action going on there is a sub-plot running through the main plot but it is not so convoluted that you lose track of it. Persie is don't a bang up job of total denial and wishing her way out of where she is rather than actually opening her eyes to see what is actually going on around her. Ax, is sunk in the red mist and he too, doesn't really see through his anger at his situation until one day it seems like the immovable force (him) meets the unstoppable object (Persie). I would say all hell breaks loose but then if you are the son of Hades and pretty much live there already how much worse can it get?
I had a very hard time getting into this story the angst factor was so high. Persephone/Persie spent half of the book sniping and just being a general B---- to Axiocersus/Ax. It wasn’t until 51% that both of them stopped being nasty to each other and then it went from “I hate you” to “I love you” and heading into the horizontal position. For me none of their nastiness was even remotely a sexual build up, it just made the story angsty. Then once they finally got past the real “I hate you” then they had to pretend that they hated each other to protect each other. I was so worn out come the end of the book.
There were many things in the plot that seemed important at one point then it seemed to just lose whatever use it had because it was quickly forgotten. The sub-plots were so predictable all it did was add even more bog to an already boggy plot. There was no real let up of the constant angst in this story. At one point even Persie’s friend pointed out she was the one causing a lot of needless angst. (Wish the author had realized that and toned it down a bit.) The bad guys in this were so over the top and cartoonish. There were a few nice moments but so much of it is overshadowed by the constant and unrelenting angst.
Others may enjoy this type of read and because angst is not my favorite thing to read, I am leaving the review at a 3 star instead of the 2 star that I really feel that it is.
