Characters and their worlds have inundated Kristen's mind since she was a kid. Traveling to far off places and having words on a piece of paper transform into entire scenes pulling at her emotions is an obsession.

Her goal as a fantasy author isn't solely to relish in her imagination, but to bring representation to this genre. She wants stories with characters who are diverse inside and out. Their differences are not the focal point of the narrative, but rather a natural part of their being. Due to this, you will often not only find characters of varying ethnicities, but also of the LGBTQ+ community, who battle diseases, are neurodiverse, and plenty of other areas that make us all so different from each other. These are not their defining qualities. It's simply a part of who they are.

When Kristen isn't cooped up on her computer or curled up with a book, she is often outdoors-- traveling, hiking, snorkeling, diving, camping, etc.
Currently, she resides in California with her husband and fur babies (two dogs and a cat).

This was such a fun, fast read!

Whisper of Darkness is the first book I’ve read that features a banshee, and I loved the main character, Cara! There were a couple things she said that really made me chuckle. She was sassy and resilient. I loved the other characters in here just as much. I was surprised and grateful to see a nuerodiverse character, Cadan! I enjoyed that instead of the characters’ backstories being revealed all at once in the beginning, they were slowly uncovered over time.

Books with a plot that involve a competition are plentiful, but I thought this one was super unique! I can’t wait for the second book and to see more of Kristen Braddock’s work!

I would definitely recommend picking this up! Thank you for the ebook, Kristen!

I had the honour of reading Whisper of Darkness as an arc, and honestly thank you so so so much to the author for sending this to me!! This was an absolutely wonderful read!

If you're looking for a book about fae, and not just One Kind of Fae but a variety such as banshees and pucas, no steam (so safe to read in public) but a very slight romantic subplot that never becomes the main focus, a magical competition, and a diverse set of characters: read this book!!

I will admit that the author had already made me enthusiastic with her instagram posts about it, but god did I love this book!

My biggest plus around this might truly be the non-steam part. I know it's slightly spoiler-y, but sometimes I just want a fantasy novel to escape, and I don't need to read sex scenes between characters that have known each other for less than a book. I know that this is a personal opinion but still! I wouldn't say this book is great for a younger audience, since there is still a lot of violence and gore-y scenes, but it's perfect for adults who are not looking for steam!

Furthermore, I thought the plot of the book was unique. Not in the sense that a magical competition is unique, but the challenges definitely were! They weren't just about fighting to the death, or outsmarting the other, they were scary and brutal in completely different ways, which made the story that much more enjoyable. And the book never slowed down, but in a good way. There was action, there was fast pacing, which made the 600 pages (on my phone) fly by like nothing.

I also really enjoyed Cara's development in the book! She was human, she was scared, but she learned. She's such a powerful, strong and intriguing character, you can't help rooting for her. And she's not shy; at all. I admire her determination, even if she doesn't do it herself. And the love she has for those she cares about, is immense.

And let's talk diversity! This book is diverse. I will not say whether or not the representation of neurodiverse people was accurate, since that is not my place to say, but the mental health rep?? Yes, absolutely. It wasn't romanticized, it was raw and ugly, and really well done.

My one quip with this book is the writing, but it's not a big quip. There was a lot of repeating sentence structure. The "he did this, as I..." kind of structure to be specific, which became noticeable after a while but wasn't too annoying, so it didn't lessen my experience of the book.
There were also a lot of main character males; almost throughout the entire book Cara's surrounded by males, but it does seem safe to say that the next book will have much less of that (or I hope so, at least).

As far as it goes for a series, I really think this was a great first book! The main plot set up for something even bigger in a very natural way, gradually lifting tips of a greater mystery, not giving away too much at once but also letting the reader discover it at a gradual pace that makes you want to know more; one thing is for certain, this story isn't over yet.

I really really enjoyed reading this book! The characters were great, there was rawness and pain, it was fast paced and action filled. Truly, absolutely worth it to check out!

This novel was straight in with the action. Cara is dragged from the human world into the fae realm and pitched into an impossible situation from the beginning. She has no idea that she has magic let alone what her magic actually is, nor does she really find out much more except that death hounds her every step, which is daunting for anyone. Braddock creates a world of dreary acceptance where the all powerful king rules over all and is worshipped by his people, and yet there is that lingering question as to whether all is alright in the world.

Shay, the fae who dragged her into the fae realm, remains aloof and unexplained. Killian the dark fae who inexplicably helps her in the competition, is revealed to be a tortured spirit who may not be as bad as he seems. Cara has an affinity with his darkness, and believes she has found a friend.

This is a really engrossing story with characters who grow on you. I love Cara who although struggles with her own demons remains true to herself and her love for her family and friends. There is a goodness that runs deep in her and can’t be extinguished no matter what is thrown at her.

Both Shay and Killian are complex characters which you have to discover for yourself, and I can’t decide which I want Cara to end up with! Though I am glad to say we have a long way to go before I think we’ll find out!

This was a thoroughly gripping read, which ratcheted up the tension as the book progressed, and you won’t want to put it down, because you want to know what will happen to Cara, Killian and Shay. I can’t wait for the next book, and we can find out what it is in store for these wonderful characters. A great story with engaging characters, I highly recommend you read it!
I was fortunate enough read an ARC, and I am so glad I did!

I would never have expected to like a book about banshees at all, let alone so much. But this story was fantastic. When Cara is in trouble, she doesn't expect her scream to bring a fae to save her and in exchange claim she owes him a life debt. But that's what happens. She never wanted to leave her sister and go to Gon'an'rit. She didn't want to risk her life participating in a series of games that grants a reward to her rescuer. And Shay, well, he can be quite difficult at times...most times. But as she grows accustomed to her new realm, she realizes that little is what it seems and the things she though she knew are nothing like her expectations. She begins to make friends and allies, but can anyone truly be her ally in this strange world of truth and lies and manipulations?

I liked Cara a lot. I see a lot of reviews saying that she was a mess, but hardly compared to your typical YA heroine. Besides, she's been through a lot. And I think she's pretty awesome. The book in general didn't feel like your typical fae fantasy, which kept me guessing and made things a lot of fun. Cadan, while not quite a main character, was also unexpected in the fae realm. He was just nice. Shay was also unexpected. The expectation is that he would be set up as the love interest, but that doesn't seem likely, at least not at this point. I am looking forward to continuing the story and seeing where Cara's journey will take her.

this honest review stems from receiving an ARC copy

Whisper of Darkness is the first book in the Banshee’s Curse series. At the beginning of the book, it reminded me a little of A court of thorn and roses, as the main character of the book is kidnapped by someone into the fairy realm at the very beginning of the book. The main character Cara is confronted with the supernatural world when she screams for help during a robbery. A handsome stranger hears this scream, who then kills the attacker and takes Cara with him into the fairy realm. Because she has to pay a life debt. Cara, who doesn't believe in the supernatural world, is confronted with a surprise. She is supposed to be a banshee and her rightful place is in the fairy realm. Once there, Cara has to learn to use her strength and most importantly she has to survive. Because she has to take part in a competition of the king instead of Shay and she can only go back to earth when she emerges victorious. In addition to Shay, other fairies are also introduced. Cara develops different relationships with them and we can watch how she gets more comfortable around them. As a reader you are constantly in tension and wonder if Cara can trust someone and who will betray her. Because not only does her friendship with Shay improve, but a relationship with Killian and Caden also develops. Many secrets are revealed throughout the book and the past also plays an important role. Cara is a main character with whom you can identify well, as she does not always make heroic decisions and also does not always know how to deal with certain situations. At the beginning of the book, the warm relationship between Cara and her sister can be observed. Her sister has looked after her since her parents passed away.
I love that this book is about a banshee. I don't know many books that involve around a banshee. Getting to know her skills and how they work was very exciting and I'm already looking forward to the next part. I hope we will see more different powers from the characters. In addition, I wish that we can solve a few more secrets from the past in the next book. I recommend the book for all fans of Sarah J. Maas and for everyone who wants to trade into a new, fascinating fantasy world.

Disclaimer: I was given a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First, I have to say that my opinions are going to be a little bit swayed because I was also a proofreader for this book, so I already knew going in that I was going to enjoy it.

Things I liked:
- Caden is the perfect cinnamon roll and I adore him. He may or may not be the best character in the book, fight me!
-Killain and Shay were both awesome! Killain is a great bad boy character. And he, gasp!, actually has a backstory. It’s explored more in the prequel, so if you guys are big Killian fans, go check that out!
- At first I wasn’t really sure what to make of the competitions because they certainly weren’t what I expected when I read that that most of the book was going to revolve around the competition. Being someone who read a lot of hunger games esque content when that was popular, I was expecting some thing a little more like that. But the more I read the more I was glad that the competition wasn’t something that I had read five times before. I think that really added to the originality of the book and the overall world building.
-Shauna! Not gonna lie, I was low-key mad she was not in the book more. I am here for all of the LGBTQ rep and sass!
-The author’s writing style! I can’t really pinpoint anything specific here, I just kind of love everything about it.

Things that could’ve been tweaked:
- The author knows this from when I did the proofread for her, but there were a few points in the book where I found it really hard to relate to Cara. Now, granted, the author was trying to do something very difficult with a character like Cara in trying to depict someone that, at the beginning of the book at least, cares much more about the other people around her than she does about herself. In a lot of ways, she kind of reminded me of Callie from the Fosters, which is a show and a character that I truly adore. But they were a few times where I wish Cara would’ve taken a little more initiative, and felt a little more in control of her own story. That being said I’m excited to see what the author does with the second book

Whisper of Darkness by Kristen Braddock was the first book in what promises to be an exciting high fantasy series in the same vein as Sarah J Maas (without the sex scenes)

4.5 stars!

Cara has seen a lot of death in her life and she’s convinced she’s cursed. People around her just seem to die. There’s also panic attacks that rise up and are uncontrollable. Her life is thrown off of its axis when she is attacked at a bar and screams for her. A gorgeous man saves her, insisting she owes him a life debt.

Cara was the most relatable main character I’ve read in a long time. I loved her. She wasn’t perfect, she didn’t make the greatest decisions at times; but that was honestly so endearing to me. She felt real. Also banshees are something I need more of in fiction. Shay drove me absolutely insane, but I found myself absolutely loving his character by the end of the book.

The plot is super interesting. It does remind me of Sarah J Maas but (no shade, no tea, don’t come for me!) without all of the sex scenes that go on too long. I was able to focus on the characters, the plot and the action of the book without it being slowed down to include those. I really enjoyed Kristens writing style and I’m very much looking forward to the second book!

The world building?? The world building was so intricate and I can’t even imagine how long it took to create. There’s a lot of details, and they’re very well put together!

I also wanted to included this note from the author. I think it’s incredible and I want to make sure people know that checking this book out helps out such a great cause!:
“Bringing diversity to the fantasy genre, noted in this novel by a main character who battles her mental health and another who is autistic, is something I am very passionate about, thus why 10% of my profits will go to the Foundations of Divergent Minds. I hope you fall in love with these characters as much as I did.”

Cara Winters feels like she’s cursed; she’s been around too much death in her life. After a stressful day, her sister Shauna gets her to go out to a club with her to loosen up, but the night ends with Cara in Gon’an’rit (the land of the fae) with a sword wielding man telling her she’s a Banshee. She’s confused and knows nothing about the fae. Yet she’s suddenly coerced into competing in dangerous trials to repay a life debt.

We learn about the competition and the fae world along with Cara - she’s absolutely in the dark and is stumbling through the best she can through everything. I would have enjoyed more world building up front, but learning everything along with Cara did propel me to keep reading to try and figure out what was going on.

The only allies she finds in this strange world is Shay (the sword wielding fae who captured her to begin with), Caden (another contestant), and Killian (a powerful and dangerous fae also competing). The alliances are tenuous at best.

I flew through this book - I love reading about the fae and this book was no exception. Cara is incredibly kind and that is her strength. She doesn’t suddenly become great at battle, but rather forms tenuous relationships with Shay, who needs her to win for him, Caden, who is kind to her and helps her through this strange world, and Killian, who helps train her, scares her and attracts her. There was definitely some romantic tension between Cara and Killian, and I personally would’ve liked to see that explored more. I also enjoy a little steam in my books lol so I wouldn’t mind seeing that in the sequel.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a fast paced read and I want to know more about this world and Cara. If you enjoy stories about the fae, then I definitely recommend checking out this book!

Whisper of Darkness, Banshee’s Curse Book 1 by @kristenbraddockauthor
...........
“I am in charge of my own life.”
.............
Looking for an action packed fantasy book? This one kept me hanging on to see what was going to happen next! You never knew where the story was going. Reminiscent of a magical hunger games and some real life earthly attributes you’ll understand when you read them. Cara is an endearing female lead who has a love for animals and the underdog. Her struggles in this book to understand who she is as well as being taken away from her only family is one I hope you see in my edit. The book isn’t dark but her emotion was felt.
...............
“Did you know when a rabbit gets caught, they scream?”
..................
This is a story of a Banshee who doesn’t know she is a Banshee. She finds out when she is both attacked and then kidnapped away to the Fae Relm to serve a life debt she didn’t ask for. Shay, the kidnapper, puts her into the trials of the relm as his proxy as the way to pay her debt. She is tested and with each trial she discovers something new about herself, but she endures many hardships along the way that has her breaking down. Killian is the elusive broody male she can’t help but be drawn to but his past holds a lot of mystery and it soon catches up with him. With a possible uprising and so many secrets, what will happen when the final test may mean the death of someone she loves?
.................
“We both realize our moment as allies is a thing of the past.”
...............
This was a solid book and will keep you interested and it is very well written. I had a love/hate relationship with Shay but he was that character that frustrates you 🤣 Cara is funny and sarcastic and her responses to Shay make it all better. I’ve only read one over series with a Banshee so I was excited to discover this one!

If you're a lover of The Selection series or Red Queen series, then you should definitely read this one too.

I love these kinda royalty fantasy power books.♡♡

With an underlying hint of chemistry, but with absolutely no steam is the first book in the Banshee's Curse series & I know this is gonna be amazing. Ends on a cliffhanger that won't kill you but will keep you curious because there's a lot more to learn.

The 6 trials were fantastic & made enough sense that a new fae could pass them if he/she is smart & quick enough. The writing is descriptive to imagine every detail. The ending was AMAZING & I never saw that coming!!
I can't say more without giving spoilers!!!!!

Cara is a human or so she thought. When she gets "forced" into the fae realm to compete to fulfill her life debt, she has to fight (obviously). Cara is totally geniune; asks many questions, gets tongue tied & awkward around people, especially around good looking guys but is intelligent & has gone through a lot (not in the dark/abusive sense) even though she's only 20 years old.

Shay.. I liked him more but I don't think he will end up with Cara. By the time you finish this book, your opinions about him will change. He's the left heir, yupp, not the single heir.

Killian.. everyone's favourite; the dark, mysterious looking guy that melts for his family & rarely shows the light he has. He believes he's the nightmare & epitome of darkness but there's more to why he thinks so.

Definitely not so patiently waiting for Book 2!!

**spoilers**
I will tell you that I wasn’t sure what to make of this book when I started. It didn’t hook me in as much because I feel like everything happened so quickly in the beginning and I felt a little shellshocked right along with the main character Cara over the quick turn her life took. It frustrated me that the character Shay would not give Cara the time of day and believe her when Cara said she had no idea about her magic (I thought that he might want to address that sooner since she's supposed to be his champion....however, the fae are fickle and the way he tricked her and manipulated her need to know what was going on was VERY fae 😈). I wish I had seen more of her power prior to the portal, but that’s neither here nor there.
Going forward into the story, I am a sucker for trials and a training sequence with definite romance in the works, and that is what I got. From the quirky side characters (Caden has all of my best friend love) and the different trials (all diverse and interesting although I wanted MORE from the truth trial), Cara’s grief over her powers (I feel so terrible she has to carry that burden and her guilt over Caden) and Killian who I really want MORE of and yes the slow burn is always a little killer. I really fell deep into the story and couldn’t help but read read read. In the end, I felt the betrayal and worry and all of Cara’s emotions surrounding Killian and her sister and Caden, (definitely had me tearing up and screaming out loud as my heart broke for her 😭💔) and I am very excited to continue reading her story (I have already started the second one).

It took me 4-5 chapters to get into the book as the beginning was set in the real world. But after Cara was transported to the fae realm, the book immediately picked up, to the point where I didn't want to put it down.

This was such an amazing read filled with twists at every step. Cara is supposed to go through trials and win the competition on Shay's behalf. Each round was based on a virtue like wit, power, strength, etc., and each task was unique and unexpected. I think this is the first book where the trials are so different. Usually, it's the same old fighting or hunting. I thoroughly enjoyed myself while reading those parts.

The characters are so well-written that you can't help but relate to them closely. At times I've felt like I've been right there experiencing the feelings in their place. The thing I liked about Cara the most was that even when she was going to choose another person over herself, she did not come across as those unrealistic self-sacrificing heroines. There was a balance to her personality that made her likable. The supporting characters were also amazing.

I've been on a fantasy reading spree for more than a year and read nearly 300 books and not a single one had a banshee, so the magic and the whole concept was fascinating for me.

The ending was awesome and filled with action. I'm eager to read the second book and find out what happens. I'm expecting it to be even better because of the characters that have come together. I think it'll be explosive! I recommend this book to all fantasy lovers. Don't miss out on this gem.

This book is different from other fae related books I've read. I've never read anything with banshees, so this got my hooked since the beginning, and through in the mix some fae? I'm all for it. I really liked the world, and the scenery the author presents really makes yo be transported to the English hills and mountains, it was really nice.

It was really well paced and fast, which is a go for me, making the story really dynamic and not boring. But at times I felt that it was a bit confusing and at points it was really fast-paced and I would've liked to see the MC react to her powers or at least freak out I bit about the works she was being introduced into? I felt like she just accepted everything and went along with it. On the other hand, the book touches some dark and complicated points and I think it was done great. Overall I didn't really connect with the characters so I didn't enjoy the story as much as I would've liked.

If you like enemies to lovers, complicated characters and Celtic folklore, this book is for you.

Note: I received an digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for a voluntarily and honest review.
Original review on my blog Boekensteeg
When I think of Banshee, I think of death. In my view, Banshee are creatures that announce someone’s death. However, Kristen Braddock completely changed my view of Banshee in this first part of the Banshee’s curse series. For example, a Banshee does not lead to death, but they can only predict it.

With only her sister as support and support, Cara has a difficult life. When she bumps into Killian, all this changes. Who is he and what does he want from her? He takes her to the land of the Fae and lets her participate in a tournament. The only way to ever get home is to win. But what does Cara have to do for this? What awaits her?

Cara is a very strong character who certainly knows how to hold her own. And although this book has many male characters, there is certainly enough room for Cara to express herself.

Various tests are central to the tournament. In each of these tests, Cara learns more about herself, which helps her grow as a character. She is very strong and the following quote underlines that even more for me.

I am in charge of my own life

Kristen Braddock has a fine writing style that made me fly through the story very easily. The world is well put together, which sometimes makes me feel like I’m in the realm of the fae. I am certainly curious about how Cara will develop further in the next parts in this series and I am looking forward to the sequel.

Solid Start

I received this book as an ARC

I loved the nuanced characters who were not two dimensional & predictable. There are a lot of unanswered questions, a frustration shared by both the reader and the heroine, though she doesn't seem to make much effort beyond questions at discovering more about the new world she's been thrust into.

The plot is fast paced, and perhaps that's why there was never much time to discover much about the world. It's an urban fantasy setting, and whilst the first books are always about setting up the foundations, each chapter had me engaged and curious to find out wha happens next. There wasn't much romance in this book (...foundations being laid), and I found the heroine a tad bit frustrating at times...I think I've read so many fantasy books that I'd like to think if I were ever thrust into an unknown world, some sense of survival and self preservation would kick in 😂

I cannot wait to see what happens next in this storyline. A gang of realistically portrayed misfits, each struggling with their own demons, as they try and work together for a cause greater than themselves.
(SPOILERS) will we get more answers as to the identity of the heroine? Will there be a love triangle? Will there be forgiveness? How is this going to play out...?

Whisper of Darkness is a dark fantasy about a girl who is cursed and doesn’t know how powerful her curse can be.

Cara is out with her sister at a party when they are separated. She goes outside for some air and finds herself in a bad situation. When she screams for help appears, but it comes with consequences. Shay helps Cara escape an attack and since he answered her banshee call she owes him a debt.

Cara is stuck in the fae realm and needs to get back home to her sister. Shay doesn’t tell her much, but I could tell her trying to get back home was going to be a task. Cara must compete on Shay’s behalf and if she wins the competition he will take her back home. As soon as he said it I didn’t believe him at all. All I can think is Cara has her work cut out for her but she didn’t give up.

Whisper of Darkness has an interesting plot but I wanted more of the banshee aspect of the book. The trials were easy to miss and I could only connect to a few of the characters. I liked that Cara found her strength by the end and was happy she reunited with her sister.

Shay and Killian’s characters were some what of a mystery to me and I want to know more about them. Since this is the first book and mainly an introduction, I look forward to seeing where the series and the characters will go.

Whisper of Darkness is the first novel in a YA trilogy about a human girl who discovers she is half banshee, when kidnapped by a fae and taken to the fae realm, away from her beloved older sister. The story is told in first person perspective and it took me a while to warm to Cara, the main character. She has felt cursed since she was little as she is able to predict when someone is going to die near her. This has caused her anxiety and depression which only her sister has been able to shake her out of.

Cara discovers her powers when she is taken into the fae realm by a hooded man carrying a sword who comes to her aid in an alleyway behind a nightclub where she is fighting off a drunken man. Thus incurring a life debt she now has to take part in a series of trials for Shay, the man who kidnapped her and brought her to the fae realm. The trials are fairly original, and include an Escape Room and knowledge of the Morse Code.
Cara proves herself to be independent, brave, feisty and kind. She befriends a neuro-diverse character called Cadan when most of the fae either bully or ignore him. I enjoyed this diversity rep along with that of Cara’s older sister, who is gay.

The book is fairly fast paced - the trials and fight scenes are faster and more exciting than other scenes. There is a lot of “will they, won’t they” romance between Cara and another character which I found a little annoying - but other readers might thoroughly enjoy this kind of relationship.

It was interesting to read a book with a banshee as the main character and to learn a little Irish folklore as well.

A very refreshing Fantasy novel!

This book is a New Adult Fantasy novel which signs the beginning of a series, and it's part of what I know as the "Isekai" genre, where the main character is transported to and has to survive in another world - often a fantasy world.

The world building is very interesting; the Fae Realm is a mix of classic fantasy and modern elements, which make it feel like a really unique place.

The plot line is easy to follow and enjoyable, and the characters are solid and have well-defined personalities. All of them, even those whose choices I didn't agree with, act perfectly in character and I had a 100% understanding of why they did or said certain things.

Cara is not the kind of heroic main character you may expect from this kind of book. She's flawed, and very often she doesn't want to admit that she needs help, even though she clearly does. It's interesting to see how she changes slowly as the story progresses, and by the end of the book it feels like she's ready for her journey to truly begin, so I will be looking forward to see her grow in the next books in the series!

If you're a fan of the genre and you're looking for a new series, this book is highly recommended!

Cara Winters has spent her entire life in the human realm, believing she is cursed. It is not until one fateful night, when she is whisked away to a magical realm, that Cara learns she is actually is a type of Fae called a banshee. Coerced into a competition by Shay, a mysterious red headed Fae to whom she owes a life debt, Cara realizes that if she ever wants to get back to earth, she has to learn who she is, and how to control her powers - fast. Even worse, she can’t help her attraction to the darkly brooding Killian, a dark Fae male who is helping her train. The competition heightens as Cara and Killian grow closer, and when stakes are raised, Cara must decide what the best course of action is.

Wow!!! I was privileged enough to read the prequel novella, and this first book did not disappoint! I was completely drawn into this magical world that Braddock has created, full of high stakes and political intrigue. I loved the banter between Cara and Killian. I also loved the representation in this book, highly unusual to see in the fantasy genre. I cannot wait to see how Braddock continues the series.

I received a copy of this book from the author, and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I loved this book. It was a little bit of a departure from the fantasy books I’m used to and it was fantastic.

Cara Winters is an awkward young adult preferring the company of animals to humans and throwing herself into her studies instead of a social life. A night and day difference to the sister that helped raise her after her parents died. Bubbly, social, and outgoing Shauna is the epitome of fun, which is how Cara was talked into going out that night. The night that would change everything she has ever known as she is ripped from earth, thrust into the Fea realm, and forced into a deadly competition. Cara must learn to fight for survival and unleash the banshee powers she never knew she had.

The world building in this was brilliant. I really enjoyed the way the realms were set up to co exist without a ton of overlap. The story was fun and full of great witty banter and characters that were likable even in their worst moments. Cara is by far one of the most relatable characters I’ve seen in a book in a long time. She was the perfect mix of pessimism, anxiety, and cynical hope that I really connected with. All said and done I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and I cannot wait for the next book!!

I saw a review for Whisper of Darkness, and between the review, cover, and blurb... I knew I wanted to read this book...

Alongside the human world, exists the Fae world of Gon'an'rit... beautiful, and green, yet always gloomy with rain...

Cara, reluctantly on a night out with her sister, steps out of the club... and is whisked off to Gon'an'rit in a sequence of events that starts with saving a dog...

She learns that she is a Beansidhe, and she's stuck there because she owes a life debt to the inscrutable Shay, who signs her up to proxy for him in a magical competition - Naim, where he hopes to win the ultimate prize of a magical wish.

Cara struggles to learn about who she is, what powers she has, and how she can win the competition; so that Shay may take her home after. In the process she makes the most unlikely friends.

The world building is sublime... it is both similar and disparate to our world, making it familiar, yet fascinating. The characters are so real, multidimensional and complex. The book is well paced, and beyond a point I read through it as fast as I could because it had become so interesting.

I requested a copy of this book from the author, which she shared in exchange for a candid review.

Spoiler alert!!!! Image being convinced that you are cursed, when people around you inexplicably die. Well, that's how Cara sees herself, cursed. She thinks that she is the one causing these deaths when she has, bwhat she calls"episodes". Little does she realise that she is, in fact, not human, but is Far and a Banshee to boot! When Cara is attacked, she screams for help and a stranger comes to her rescue. He abducts her and takes her "home", straight to the Fae kingdom. He forces Cara to take part in a trial, as her debt to him for coming to her aid. I enjoyed the narrative, I enjoyed the characters who are shrouded in mystery, I enjoyed the plot and scheming and how Cara struggles with the realm and herself. With her sister being brought into the Fae kingdom, Cara has no option but to finish the trial, which doesn't go as anticipated, much to Cara's horror. What transpires has Cara stunned and feeling betrayed by Killian. Both Killian and Shay have their ownThe way the king uses his power to steal magic and his determination to remain king is pure evil! The twist at the final trial, was quite surprising. Together with Killian and Shay, Cara is determined to help them get rid of the king. Looking forward to more adventures

It took me a while to read this book because it’s the volume of 3 books in one (511 pages) and epic fantasy, which is not my fave type of fiction. But, I have to admit I quite enjoyed this YA fae realm read that reminded me of The Hunger Games because of the girl against the world thing in a Potter-esque deadly trials setting (think Goblet of Fire maze trials). Cara Winters is kidnapped, discovers she is a banshee or Beansidhe and is forced into a fae competition to win a wish for someone else so she can settle her life debt. As you would expect, an unprepared earthling just discovering her magic powers, Cara isn’t a hero in every circumstance, yet she makes friends fast and with some people she shouldn’t. I truly loathed Shane, so well done portraying the prince as a weakling. Equally, I loved the dark and broody Killian and not just coz of the name & coz I kept picturing him as the pirate in Once Upon A Time series. I’m hoping Cara finds out why he’s done what he’s done in book 2. Recommended for lovers of YA epic and portal and fae fantasy, slow burn romance in the fae realm and feisty but not all together heroines.

We're in the first-person POV of Cara Winters, a girl struggling with her inner demons and trying to find her way in life. Her sister Shauna takes care of her, and I LOVED Shauna (I'd love to take her out for a drink!)

Quickly, Cara is abducted / rescued / bit of both by a mysterious stranger. Sometimes the 'transitioning to another world' scenes can be a bit cringey, but this was done so amazingly well. And Cara's wit! Girl can give as good as she gets. I loved that she was taking no prisoners from the get-go. We're introduced to a cast of characters, and each of them with their own quirks. The characterisation is done so well. I loved the little touches of Celtic inspiration too!

I love books that make me feel, and this made me feel so much. The characters and their stories stayed with me long after the book was finished.

If you like shifters, diverse characters and exploring the darkness within, this is for you.

I received an ARC copy, and this is my honest unvarnished, straight-from-the-heart review.

3.5 stars

This book feels like it just needs a little more work to flow more naturally and make the characters people you actually root for. I don't think it is a bad book by any means just not up to par with some other similar books.

I generally enjoy the fish out of water trope where someone is pulled into fairy but I would say the first 25/30% of the book was the hardest for me to get into. Once the story started rolling it was strong but there weren't many answers for the MC or us as readers and I think we were supposed to be distracted by a potential romance with one of the male characters but it didn't feel natural or convincing as to why they would even like each other beyond attraction. Perhaps this is built on in later books but it feels like a dead end based on events in their pasts.

Again, this isn't a bad book. It just isn't as strong as others in the genre. I would say it's YA content without the usual YA pitfalls. So if that's your genre, this is a good choice.

This is the perfect book if you’re looking for a fast-paced story with wit and depth. The story is exciting and new and the characters are all well-developed.
The main character is childish, funny, and smart. She is deeply flawed and deeply human, and is written in a way that makes her lovable and relatable. In fact, most of the characters—despite many of them being nonhuman—are lovable and relatable in their own ways.
This book, to me, is about the importance of recognizing that despite the fact that we all have flaws and differences, we are all worthy of love in all its forms. It’s about the importance of those differences.
This has quickly become one of my favorite fantasy stories and I can’t wait for the next one in September!!
As a final thought, here’s my favorite quote from this one: “But you… You’re goodness. You’re someone who understands the dark, who has walked in it, but it allows you to bring light into the world. You’re someone who stands up for the weak and those who are hurt. You find strength where others would crumble”.

A super read that I devoured in less than a day.

Other reviews I read before I read this book described it similar to Sarah J.Maas' books, and I can understand the parallels that have been drawn. The characters in this book have substance to them and a depth. Cadan the character, displays signs of being nuerodiverse which Maas doesn't have at all. Our main character also displays signs of depression which the author has the courage to explore from the beginning. Maas hasn't done this in any of her books in the beginning and only has recently done this in her latest novel. I also feel these characters in this book are more diverse in ethnicity and are not whitecentric like Maas' characters. I commend the author for exploring these topics in the first book of a series.

The book is generally left on a cliffhanger of course. All the characters have developed to a point where I really want to know where they're going in the next book. I'll definitely be picking up the next book!

I received a copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only for the pleasure of reading and leaving a review.

Disclaimer: this honest review stems from receiving an ARC copy.
I really enjoyed it! For a debut novel this was just perfection. The characters are INSANE. They are so well written. It can be really intricate as well, but overall the characters are exactly what I hoped they would be!

And then the world building: chef's kiss. I loved the world building in this book. It really gave me a clear picture of what the author imagined what the world should look like. The world definitely added to the setting of the entire story. It was perfectly done in my opinion.

Lastly ... the writing style. Again, phenomenal. The writing style is really beautiful and it really made me want to keep reading on and on and on. I could not stop reading, because of the gripping writing style.

Overall, I think I would lie if I'd say I liked it. I did, but I liked the book more than just 'like', I LOVED it. I can't wait what else is to come in this world.

Cara is cursed or so she believes. Before someone near her dies, she can sense it. Not knowing why this happens, she lives with trauma that nobody around her understands.

When fighting off an attacker outside a bar, a pointy-eared brute saves her, whisking her away to Faerie where he forces her into a competition for in exchange for the life-debt.

The novel is filled with vivid scenery, realistic characters, heartbreaking, and heartwarming moments.

Cara is a flawed character who suffers from mental health issues. Shay and Killian both are dealing with loss and trust issues.

Even though I thought some things in this book were really obvious, it was an enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Thank you to Kristen Braddock for allowing me to be part of the ARC team.
