February 12, 2022Outline of the story: In a modern Europe-looks-alike fantasy world, there are magic-users and the unearthly powerful beings known as the 'witches'. The witches are seemingly all evil and love to curse people and cause mayhem, so the witches are widely feared and hated by the general public and are hunted by the Church and an unknown organization of magic users.
There are an unlikely pair sent by the Organization to hunt down the witches: Guideau, a teenage girl (?) with eyes of a beast, a matchless ill temper and seemingly unstoppable power, and Ashaf, a level-headed magician who carries a mysterious coffin everywhere he goes?

While the story is good and only getting better, the art is exquisite. The use of light and dark made me want to study the pages. It reminds me of how Bela Lugosi used shadow and light to create the mood for his Dracula. Loved the story, but the art is the star of this volume.

Dans ma chronique précédente, je vous disais que l’on partait sur une nouvelle intrigue, et c’est vrai ! Sauf qu’avec cette suite, on découvre qu’elle rejoint celle entourant le mystère qu’est Guido ! Car clairement on ne sait pas vraiment ce qu’elle/il est ! Enfin, on a de sérieux doutes, c’est vrai, mais rien n’a encore été dévoilé.
Dans ce septième tome, nous continuons notre traversée dans ce monde souterrain, fief de dangereux vampires dans lequel Ashaf et Guido sont en mission.
Franchement, plus on avance et plus je trouve que cette histoire devient palpitante et prenante à souhait ! De plus, j’aime beaucoup ce côté ultra sombre de l’univers, tout comme l’évolution de la relation Ashaf/Guido. Sont-ils amis, plus, et qu’est-ce qui les lie vraiment ? Dans ce volume, on se pose la question et pas que nous apparemment !
Si Guido reste un mystérieux personnage que j’ai encore bien du mal à cerner, on peut dire qu’il en va de même pour Ashaf ! En sept tomes, on ne sait pas grand-chose de ce duo atypique qui recherche la puissante sorcière qui a jeté un sort à Guido.
Dans cette suite trépidante, on entrevoit un peu plus ce qui a pu se passer, notamment grâce à une conversation avec la reine vampire qui ne semble pas être ce qu’elle est. Enfin, pas que !
En bref. J’ai adoré ce nouveau tome des aventures de The Witch and the Beast ! J’apprécie toujours autant les dessins et l’histoire se complexifie tandis que le mystère entourant Guido se resserre de plus en plus.

Guideu and Ashaf’s adventures in a world they are not familiar with takes a crazy turn after they are forced to rely on vampires to find who they are looking for. Can they trust the gruff and secretive vampire, Dunward, or anyone in this mysterious place? It’s a question that keeps crossing their minds as they have dinner with the Bridge, a mediator who allegedly stays neutral, so they can find the Queen of the Night.
While I was disappointed with the previous volume, I’m extremely happy that the slowness and all the worldbuilding it contained paid off because this volume hit the ground running. Fast. This time around, we learn more about vampires and exactly how broken up their factions as the characters learn about it. We also got a little more of a glimpse at the relationship between Guideu and Ashaf, which hints at there being a lot more trust between them as partners then either let on toward each other.
So many interesting to crazy things occurred in this volume that talking too much about it would lead to spoilers, but phew. It certainly hit the ground running! I’m excited to read the next volume and see where we find Guideu and Ashaf next. The world they’re visiting is certainly an interesting and deadly one. It’ll be interesting to see exactly how things unfold and how much more about this world and the people who inhabit it along the way.

Asyaf and Guideau infiltrate a vampire filled event in search of the "Queen of Vampires". However their true identity is soon revealed to the ruling faction, but their collaborator Danward wins the duel in order to learn the whereabouts of the person (commonly known as ``Hashi'' or the Bridge ) who has clues to the Queen's whereabouts.
However, the Queen seems to be the one affiliated with the witch Angela and has already begun to move towards Guideau and the others...

This is one of the few series that I read that is not BL (though I wish it was!). The twosome continues their journey in the realm of vampires. More secrets are revealed, and the art style continues to captivate. Betrayal and teamwork are key themes in this installment. Though I always feel like the writer stretches out the plot, it's still enjoyable, and I easily devoured this in a day.

Snapshot review: if your mans isn’t willing to roboticize his mind to better his chances of saving you, is he really your mans? ashaf is really taking that “let me show you what love is” to the next level and i’m honestly so here for it. really over this arc though cause dunmore is just the fucking worst.

Volume ricco di colpi di scena e di tradimenti per i propri tornaconti. Ma ciò che lascia veramente il segno, è la richiesta che fa Guideau ad Ashaf una volta imprigionati. La risposta enigmatica del mago porta a degli interrogativi non di poco conto.
I disegni sono sempre bellissimi e l'atmosfera gotica rimane uno dei punti di forza di questa serie.

Gah, this book is GORGEOUS. Definitely better that I read slowly and savor the panels (I'm curious if I should go back and do the same with the earlier volumes).

More information revealed and even more plot twists! It makes you feel a little more for characters that didn't seem so good at first and feel further for ones you like already. Excited to see what the last few volumes hold.

I love the way magic is used in this series. The vampire drama continues but I love our main characters and how they are interacting with this world.

My review of Vol. 1 gives an overall insight into my feelings on this series.
The second volume in the Orlencia Sett arc: it's vampires still, innit it? This arc got better during this volume. So many wonderful tropes explored (especially Ashaf's switch to gruff protector mode). This arc is just god tier writing.

Un tome sept de The Witch and the beast bien meilleur que le précédent, ce qui me rassure grandement. Les choses sérieuses se mettent en place et on entre dans le vif du sujet ce qui fait qu'il est beaucoup plus entraînant de suivre les mésaventures de nos deux héros. Parce que les pauvres ne sont décidément pas ménagés... mais comme c'est palpitant à souhait, on s'en accommode plutôt bien.
Nous n'avons pas encore tous les aboutissants, c'est certain. Il y a quelques petites zones d'ombre qui persistent, mais clairement plus de révélations, plus d'action et les manigances des vampires conduisent à certains événements que j'ai particulièrement appréciés. Déjà on perçoit un "rapprochement" entre Guido et Ashaf. Je mets des guillemets parce que leur relation était pour moi déjà à ce stade au début du manga, mais Kousuke Satake ne le laissait pas autant paraître. Outre une conversation assez drôle sur l'amour dont Guido ne capte absolument rien, on voit clairement la confiance qu'ils ont l'un envers l'autre. Ashaf pousse même la chose jusqu'à s'infliger un sortilège qui ne semble pas anodin. Et ces quelques petits détails font que ma curiosité est ultra titillée. J'ai envie d'en savoir plus car j'ai l'impression que l'on nous cache pas mal de choses... et si ce n'est pas le cas, je meurs d'envie que le mangaka développe cela. Je n'aurais rien contre une romance surtout entre ces deux-là !!
Pour les vampires, on voit les intentions de chacun se dessiner. Les intrigues politiques vont bon train, et entraîne de la violence, cela va de pair. Comme je le disais, je suis plus que hypée par cette suite. Elle est beaucoup plus dans la veine des autres tomes et l'action ainsi que les scènes de combat toujours aussi léchées sont réjouissantes. Je suis peut-être un peu moins fan de cette reine des vampires par contre. Elle a un côté un peu caricaturale dans le sens amoureuse transi qui ne répond que par la violence. J'ai du mal à voir en elle une ennemie avec un agenda si je puis dire, elle est plus une marionnette. du moins de ce que j'en perçois. Cela renforce la puissance d'Angela, mais... je m'attendais à quelque chose de plus élaborée. La suite me contredira peut-être, on verra.
Un tome donc des plus efficaces où les pièces du puzzle sont enfin sur le plateau et donne une compréhension de l'ensemble beaucoup plus clair. Vu que l'on va atteindre trois tomes minimum pour cette intrigue, j'espère qu'elle nous en révèlera encore plus. Je sais qu'avoir de grandes attentes n'est pas toujours une bonne chose, mais je ne peux pas m'en empêcher.

More enjoyable than the last volume. But the bit attempted SA subtext of Dunward “having his way” with Guideau pissed me off like can we not do this. I have no sympathy for this character he sucks.
