English name: An Empire for a Betrothal Gift

This was really a lot of fun. It wasn't perfect, but I wanted something longer and satisfying that was low angst to get my teeth into and this really did the job.

Ji Yue, the young King of Qin, is considered a fearsome tyrant King who has conquered the seven neighbouring countries. When Qin finally defeats the last country of Chu, in an effort to appease the King of Qin, the King of Chu sends his seventh son, the beautiful Wei Lian as a gift (and if there was to be an assassination, the King of Chu wouldn't have complained).

The author said they wanted to write about an immortal love between two demon kings, thorns growing together and blooming, and they certainly achieved that. I loved reading the slow burn enemies to lovers between Ji Yue and Wei Lian. Wei Lian spends much of their initial time together considering regicide and getting to watch their relationship grow to become completely ride or die for each other was so satisfying (very 'I would burn the world down for you' vibes).

The way Danmei does loyalty and devotion hits like nothing else.

I loved the first half of this, where the focus was on Ji Yue and Wei Lian, their budding relationship and the political mechanisms of the court and if it had stayed in that vein it would have been an easy five star read for me. I'll admit that I kind of drifted a bit during story arc set in the Kingdom of Liang and didn't think it needed that sort of supernatural element included and then felt a bit disappointed that the final arc felt glossed over a bit comparatively, and would have been perfectly happy if this just stayed a court politics story.

This was only 119 Chapters which for a Danmei is reasonably short (I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of 1200 pages?). This was a pretty decent fan translation, it had quite a few spelling and grammar errors, but considering how much work goes into creating fan translations and the fact that we can access it for free, I would never complain about that, but I feel it's important for people to go into this with realistic expectation of what to expect. I would be excited to see an official translation of this work and would be shocked if Seven Seas doesn't pick this up in the near future.

When Ji Yue tossed his brush, he thought in anger, Wei Lian was really a beautiful freaking scourge. We have not fallen in love with him yet, but he has already allured our heart.

An Empire as a Betrothal Gift (English title). Another favorite new read that I will be adding the Seven Seas survey for English licensing. This novel was such an enjoyable read that I could not put down. Check some of the other reviews to find a really good synopsis of the story.

MC Wei Lian: Beauty (of course the most beautiful in all the land ), looks fragile but is smart, cunning, manipulative?, acts coquettish with JY

ML Ji Yue: "cruel" tyrant emperor, smart, ambitious, has endless love for and devotion to WL, has a constant fear of hurting WL, GREEN FLAG, also gorgeous (of course)

👑enemies to lovers
👑fake relationship
👑power couple (little bit of Mary Sue for WL)- both smart, clever, and good at martial arts
👑Misunderstanding/communication issues with their feelings (not the frustrating kind IMO though)
👑Historical/wuxia
👑Politics/court drama (light)
👑Angst with comedic relief

Things I loved:
♥️WL's inner dialogue and sassiness
♥️Couple dynamic- they are SO perfect for each other. It was achingly sweet at times but it took work to get there. The chemistry is incredible
♥️Both have an inner fear of hurting and losing the other
♥️WL constantly referring to JL as the "older man" when they are two years apart
♥️This book really had me in my feelings- I cried multiple times for JY

Not a perfect novel but still so worth reading.
Some convenient plot devices- so if that kind of thing drives you crazy, just know it's going to happen- especially towards the end of the book.

English Title: An Empire as a Betrothal Gift
(Formerly known as: I Want to be A Widow Every Day After Marrying a Tyrant)

Length: 119 chapters (main story) + 17 extra
Third Person, Dual POV

Tropes:
Slow burn romance with a happy ending
Enemies to lovers
Fake dating
One bed

Wie Lian (MC) is the 7th Prince of the country of Chu which has been recently defeated by the Qin Army. He is sent to appease and seduce King Jie Yue (ML) who is their ruler.

And that's where the fireworks begin. I love how this couple has so much chemistry. At the start of their relationship, they are deliberately deceiving each other but then come to realise that they are each other's equal. Both are morally grey and ruthless at times and I couldn't get enough of their political scheming.

The 1st 1/2 of the novel is very character and romance focused as the relationship between the MC and ML is getting developed. After that the plot kicks in as our couple then have to tackle crises which effect the stability of the empire.

If you like 'Married Thrice to Salted Fish' and 'Golden Terrace' I would recommend this. I'm sad to have finished this because it's quite wholesome. I couldn't' put it down.

It's now being added to my list of novels which I wish would get picked up by an English publisher because I would love to own a physical copy.

English title: An Empire As A Betrothal Gift

This is an enemies-to-lovers trope done well. Both sides have to come a long way to overcome their wariness against each other, and also to resolve their own shadows from the past.

I love their inner commentaries. Their sarcasms and antics often made me laugh out loud. But they can also be super sweet and deliver touching scenes, too.

Too bad a certain mysterious character acts like a deus ex machina in this story. His presence is explained well in the extra, but I think this sudden mixing of genres is totally unnecessary. The couple is also too OP (and this is emphasized repeatedly). This lessens the stakes and the impact of the plot, and it’s what made this a 4-4.5⭐️ read instead of a 5⭐️ for me.

English Title: An Empire as a Betrothal Gift
Alternate title: I Want to be A Widow Every Day After Marrying a Tyrant / 嫁给暴君后我每天都想守寡

I didn't know much about the story as the description was kind of vague, but I'm really glad I picked it up. I love both the main characters and their relationship, while it starts out on a very contractual basis, is super sweet once it ramps up.

The story follows our MC, Wei Lian, who's a hostage prince from Chu in the kingdom of Qin and the only member of the Qin emperor's harem. However, the emperor completely forgot about him, so Wei Lian lives a very sad life in the palace with his two servants. Sick of this cold and hungry life, he makes up his mind to catch the attention of the emperor and ML, Ji Yue, so that he can live better. And his plan works very well.

Turns out, the emperor has recently been facing nonstop requests from his ministers to expand his harem. Being crazy about the MC is the perfect excuse for him to push off the ministers for the time being, so they enter a mutually beneficial relationship where they pretend to be crazy about each other in the presence of others. Obviously they eventually do start liking each other and letting their defenses down around each other, but it takes a while to get to that point.

Both the main characters are very smart and match well on the intelligence front. I also don't know between the two of them who's the better actor. They both deserve Emmys as far as I'm concerned XP

The book is split into 5 volumes, each of which focuses on a small arc. The first third (half?) of the story is my favorite, since it was rife with stupid misunderstandings as they start establishing their relationship. I was constantly cracking up in this part. After they get together, the story was more focused on external conflicts such as resolving a pandemic and removing a curse before finally getting married officially in a grand way, all of which was fine but I wasn't particularly interested in. I read the first part of the story in hours but the rest of the story dragged a bit and it took a couple more days to finish the rest.

There was two sets of extra stories, the first is a parallel world scenario where the MC switches bodies with his self in a world where he wasn't sent to the Qin kingdom as a hostage and ended up being the crown prince of Chu and sworn enemies with Ji Yue instead, and the second is about them experiencing the modern world. I read the first one but skipped the second as it wasn't particularly interesting.

I do appreciate that the author keeps this as a sweet love story. Every time something bad happened and I was afraid there would be a ton of angst, the author didn't torture us for too long before bringing the characters together again and providing us with more sweetness.

I'll end my review with some hilarious snippets from the first part of the story that I loved:

When Wei Lian and the ML's dog "gets along" XP

"It's better to meet now than later." Ji Yue added, "Why don't you start bonding with it today?"

A quarter of an hour later.

A'Meng and Wel Lian were having a staring contest, big eyes staring at the little eyes.

It wasn't an exaggeration as A'Meng was indeed staring at him with eyes as large as brass bells, wishing it could tear Wei Lian apart. However, ji Yue was watching from the side, so it had to put away its claws, shut its mouth and put on a docile appearance.

Wei Lian's back was towards Ji Yue, so his expression was not as scrupulous. He studied piteously at the golden-furred dog in front of him, and his eyes were saying-sorry for making your dog life harder, having to learn how to act with me, oh how misery loves company.

A'Meng was angered by the sympathy in the youth's eyes and wanted to bark back, but in consideration of its master, what came out of its mouth was a whine: What's with that look? I have dignity! I don't need your sympathy!!!

Wei Lian looked back lightly: What kind of mastiff got named A'Meng, don't bring up your dignity.

Its dignity was lost the moment it got its name.

A'Meng: "..."

A'Meng wished it could rip Wei Lian's throat.

Wei Lian also wanted to slaughter this stinking dog

If it wasn't for his fast reaction, he would have been dead under the dog's paws, disernboweled and died with a dismembered corpse.

Why wouldn't he hold a grudge on that?

A man and a dog both wanted to kill each other. However, in the eyes of others, the youth was gentle and affectionate, while the mastiff was obedient and docile. The person and the beast got along very harmoniously.

Ji Yue was very relieved.

-------------------

Always gotta love some embarrassing doctor's advice haha

"Apply this ointment once in the morning, and once in the evening to reduce swelling and relieve pain." Physician Wang continued on the topic, "Oh, and the thing in this box as well."

Wei Lian stared at the box with a bad feeling.

He was now very afraid of anything given by the good physician.

He asked, "What is inside?"

Physician Wang said, "Jade pillar."

Wei Lian:?

???

The amount of question marks could not describe how shocked Wei Lian was feeling inside currently.

Wei Lian, who had read the book on secret techniques, certainly knew that the thing was used for.

But why did the physician have so many strange things!

Wei Lian looked away. "This....I should not need this thing." Wasn't having the King of Qin enough?

Wait a moment, bah! Did he say having the King of Qin was enough? Preposterous! He needed neither of them!

Physician Wang explained sternly. "The young master must not underestimate proper preparation. Before His Majesty summons you to bed, put the object into your passage to help loosen it. This way, you will not feel pain when His Majesty enters."

Wei Lian was embarrassed to death, and the blush across his face spread almost to the back of his ears.

Why does an imperial physician need to know so many things! That's fine if it's in the name of gaining knowledge, but why bring it up to me!

"...I understand." Wei Lian whispered, "Many thanks to Physician Wang for the...advice."

-------------------

So much for sweet pillow talk when it comes to Wei Lian haha

"So," Ji Yue turned to look at him and asked, "did you come to complain?"

"Yes." Wei Lian beamed. "This subject came to whisper sweet words to your ears, please listen to my pillow talk and teach him a lesson for me."

Ji Yue's lips twitched. "You're too straightforward with your pillow talk."

He suggested, "Can't you put more effort? More sincere?"

Through the ages, consorts and concubines often sway the rulers by the pillow. After satisfying the ruler on the bed, why wouldn't she speak softly in a roundabout way to make the ruler feel good, enough to promise her everything.

He had never heard of someone intruding into the imperial study and announced bluntly 'I'm here to sway you with my pillow talk.'

This was too perfunctory! Where was the effort?!

-------------------

More hilarious doctor's advice XP

But when he arrived at the imperial study, His Majesty dismissed his guards, and the first question that came out of his mouth was, "Is it uncomfortable for a man's first time?"

Physician Xu acted as if he had been struck by lightning.

Why was His Majesty asking such a question?

It was well known that Young Master Lian was the only member in His Majesty's harem, who was doted on by the King very much.

Young Master Lian should have lost his virginity long ago.

Why would His Majesty ask such a question at this point of time?

He didn't notice His Majesty taking an interest in anyone...

After the process of elimination, there was only one possibility, even if it was impossible.

Physician Xu suddenly had a bold and absurd speculation.

Could it be that-

Physician Xu was shocked.

His Majesty doted on Young Master Lian to such an extent?

Tired of the dominated position, he wanted to personally experience being the submission one!

No, absolutely not possible.

His Majesty was the True Dragon, the highest reign supreme, how could he be someone in the lower position. What a scandal!

He must put an end to His Majesty's dangerous idea immediately.

Physician Xu made his decision at once and answered in a deep voice, "Uncomfortable! Extremely difficult to bear!"

English title: An Empire as a betrothal gift

Reporting: This subject is guilty of really enjoying such sweet novels in which the two main characters scatter dog food everywhere with no regards to others around them, including the reader.

Jokes aside, this novel was extremely sweet. It is the kind of novel you read when you need fluff. It made me giggle and kick my feet because these 2 are absolutely adorable.

There is not a lot of drama (at least not the kind that takes ages to solve) and the misunderstandings in the beginning were done right. Somebody compared this to Golden Stage and Married thrice to salted fish and because I loved them both, of course I had to read it as well. Indeed, the similarities are there.

I admit, a few times I almost thought of pausing reading because there was...too much fluff????? But then when I picked it up again I couldn't put it down. So yes, it took me quite a while to finish it but it was worth it in the end.

Wei Lian is the calculating, talented and extremely powerful beauty (yes, it is emphasized at least 3 times per chapter how beautiful he is) and Ji Yue is the ruthless king who is only weak for his husband. The plot is not surprising at all, everybody got what they deserved, including the side couples and our main characters are the best and the most powerful, of course.

I think you got the vibe this book has by now so I will shut up now, thank you.

Dropping at 6% (Chapter 8). I actually liked it at the beginning and even pitied the MC, but as I kept reading, I just couldn’t connect to the characters. It feels like watching a puppet dance everything looks perfect on the surface, but there’s no soul underneath. Just a cold puppet.

4.5 stars?? I was very pleasantly surprised. It gives a mix of like QJJ couple x a little of TMSF couple, but mostly QJJ vibes mixed with it’s own specialness. Idk maybe just the 2 MCs give off a similar feeling as Ce’an and Lanzhou.

A few of my favorite quotes/sections:

⚠️*spoilers below*⚠️

❤️ However, it didn’t matter if it was false or not, as long as Zhu Yue believed it. People would always be more willing to believe false news that was in their favor, while ignoring the reality of bad news.

❤️”…Wei Lian, if one day the sixth countries unite and send a large army to attack the country of Qin, you can definitely defend the Qin’s city gate Tower by yourself.”

“What made Your Majesty say that? This subject is not knowledgeable on war.”

“There is no need for you to be on the battlefield. You just need to stand there, and your thick face can shield the city wall. (…) it is guaranteed to be indestructible, even troops of 100,000 could not break through it.” 🤣🤣

❤️ "Your Majesty."

Ji Yue stopped his movement.

Is he going to yell stop?

...He himself did not want to go through with this.

This did not feel comfortable in the slightest.

"...This subject is afraid of pain." Wei Lian whispered such a sentence after a very long time and lowered his gaze.

The long dark eyelashes covered the youth's eyes; his entire being displaying this trembling vulnerability. **😒idk why they say youth, he's 19...**

"This subject hopes you have mercy."

Ji Yue's eyes fell on the youth with a complicated look.

(...)

'This subject hopes you have mercy' should never have come out of the youth's mouth.

Ji Yue stared at the youth's tense back. It was Wei Lian's silent resistance.

The youth's entire body screamed disagreement.

He was not willing.

Wei Lian waited for a long time before the other person suddenly backed away.

He opened his eyes with suspicion. "Your Majesty?"

"We do not enjoy forcing someone to do something." Ji Yue took a deep breath, hurried off the bed, picked up each article of clothing and put it back on.

Once he got up and finished buttoning up his collar, he said in a low voice, "Wei Lian, we will wait for the day when you are willing."

After a pause, he added.

“…We apologize for tonight.” 🥺

❤️ Wei Xiao Lian, you are so infuriating.

"We heard you went to the Sunglow Hall." In the end, Ji Yue spoke up first in a whisper, "So we came."

Wei Lian was surprised. "Does Your Majesty really care so much for this subject?"

Ji Yue blurted out, "Isn't it normal for us to care about our beloved?"🥹

Wei Lian quietly looked at him.

Ji Yue: "..."

Ji Yue blushed slowly under the stare and stammered, "Y-your turn to explain yourself."

Wei Lian said with a smile, "You are so cute. I like you."

Ji Yue: "!!!"

❤️...Although Ji Yue really didn't like others to get close to Wei Lian.

But more importantly, he was afraid that something would happen to Wei Lian.

(...) If the Saintess from the country of Liang did anything to Wei Lian...just the thought of it made lingering fears claw at Ji Yue's heart.

He could not handle such consequences.

He must protect his beloved at all costs.

There was a subtle change to Wei Lian's expression.

After a long time, he muttered, "So, you are worried about this."

That was not necessary.

All of Myrna's poison art were (...) Child play really.

But being the subject of someone's concern... It didn't feel too bad.

❤️ Since then, nothing ever occupied a space in Ji Yue's heart.

He did not allow himself to have weaknesses.

He did not allow himself to be coerced by others.

Even if one enemy had fallen, he still had thousands of enemies waiting.

He must stay invincible and powerful at all times.

But he made an exception at the age of twenty-one.

This year, he met someone he wanted to cherish. He did not have the heart to kill this beloved as well as be separated from him. He just wanted to do his utmost to protect his beloved, hide him from everyone.
-
Ji Yue finished his last sentence, "...What should we do?"

If you were used by others to threaten us, we would definitely save you. 🥺😍🥹

❤️ Wei Lian showed a faint smile. He lowered his eyes and flipped to the next page. Suddenly, he unconsciously focused on a sentence.

He could tell that Ji Yue had struggled when writing this annotation, as many lines were crossed out by ink.

The content was very ordinary, it was about a scholar gifting a handmade item to a young lady, who was very happy when receiving it.

The King of Qin's annotation: Are you treating it as if this young lady from an influential family will be happy with a mere plaything? As if she has not seen the wider world?

Is a handmade item really that valuable?

Will it really make someone happy?

Then we will do our best to make one for Wei Xiao Lian.

The last sentence wasn't cross out-

We want to make him happy. 🥺

❤️ Ji Yue joked, "You can't put away your act? Wei Xiao Lian, you are really useless..."

Wei Lian's eyelashes quivered again, as a tear fell down.

Ji Yue paused. "Are you crying for real?"

Wei Lian did not reply, but the tears fell down harder like raindrops.

Ji Yue immediately panicked as he hurriedly wiped away the youth's tears. "What's the matter? Everything is perfectly fine...the person who bullied you will be taught a lesson, and no one will bully you again in the future."

It was fine if Ji Yue didn't speak, but trying to comfort Wei Lian with words? It was making it harder for him to hold back his tears.

Seeing the youth's teary-eye, and the way he quietly held back any sound, Ji Yue's whole being felt dismayed. Before he could think more, he leaned over and kissed the corner of Wei Lian's eyes.

Licking away the tears with his soft and warm lips and leaving behind traces.

From the eyes to the lips, extremely gentle and cherishing beyond words.

He held the person in his arms and whispered comfort.

"A-Lian, don't cry, we are here."🥺

Why was he crying?

Wei Lian wondered the same question.

He clearly didn't feel any grievance.

He never took what Wei Yan said to heart. Previously in the country of Chu, Wei Yan said worse things. He had long been immune to the mocking. A jumping clown was not worth mentioning at all.

He also knew that Consort Yan would never stand on his side.

(...)

There was no benefit in shedding tears, it was only a display of weakness.

He never thought that one day, this tight feeling would cloud his mind by a single sentence. You have our support'. As if he had been greatly wronged.

(...)
He was invincible in the siege of malicious intents, but he was utterly defeated by the gentle encirclement.

After calming down, Wei Lian sat in a chair and shut himself off.

Why did he suddenly become so affected...

Wei Lian's crying was actually not that serious. As someone who was accustomed to emotional restraint, he still endured this moment of vulnerability quietly. Not once did he cry out loud, just quietly leaned against Ji Yue's arms and shed a few tears. When he raised his head, he was back to his usual appearance.

But for Wei Lian, who had not shown weakness in front of others for years, this had been the most humiliating day in his life.

Ji Yue pursed his lips. "Say something. We won't laugh at you.

"It's just a few tears, no big deal?

Who doesn't get sad once in a while?

(...)

Wei Lian stood up abruptly and said, "Please excuse this subject."

Then he went straight out of the door of the imperial study.

He didn't want to see Ji Yue for the time being.

Or have the face to do so.

Leaving Ji Yue silently looking at the closed door.

This was the first time that Wei Lian was the first to flee in their confrontation.

But this kind of victory... Ji Yue didn't want to take it even after a second thought.

It didn't matter if he let Wei Lian win over and over again.

It was fine as long as the youth wouldn't cry.
🥺😫

❤️ Ji Yue said in grievance, "Wei Xiao Lian, they all want our lives."

Wei Lian hugged him. "It's alright. I don't want your life."

"No, you have to want it." Ji Yue instantly changed into three-year-old Ji Yue as even his tone became childish.

He hugged the youth and whispered, "My life is yours only."

The world would be in chaos if the King of Qin died, so we cannot give you our life.

But my life is fine, I can give you my life.

Ji Xiao Yue can love Wei Xiao Lian with his life.

❤️ At least on the bed, to Ji Yue, Wei Lian let his nature run free.

To be honest, Ji Yue likes this kind of Wei Lian.

Not the wanton part, but him crying out when he felt pain, sobbing when he was wronged and begging for mercy when he was at his limit, instead of suppressing these inside.

Ji Yue would comply with the youth in everything.

Being strong is a good thing, and being able to endure is also a fine quality. But he did not need them here. Wei Lian did not need to tolerate or endure for him, those were skills that only the ones that had suffered would need to learn.

Ji Yue wants to give Wei Lian all the sweets in the world (...)

❤️ In this world, no one loves you more than Wei Lian.

❤️ He did not care whether he was deceiving the other for his own benefit or knowing that Wei Lian and he were the same. Even if they were covered in mud and associated together, they wouldn't drag each other to sink together. They would carefully wash themselves before embracing each other.

Even if his back was covered with blood and dirt, at least the side that I held you was clean and could not stain you. 😫

❤️ How dared Ji Yue to act on his own initiative?

He could have dodged it, there was no need for Ji Yue to do this!

"Don't cry." Ji Yue was still whispering comfort words to him.

(...)

What nonsense? How could he be crying!

Wei Lian touched his face in a daze and found he was really crying.

"Everything will be fine. We can still protect you." Ji Yue forced out a smile. "Aren't you afraid of pain? We don't want you hurting."

He knew that Wei Lian was very powerful, but when the arrow was flying towards Wei Lian, he forgot everything.

He reacted on instinct, the instinct to protect Wei Lian.

Protect the person in his arms and don't let harm come to the youth's way. Wei Lian is very afraid of pain.
🥺

❤️ Wei Lian said, "I want you to get better soon."

Ji Yue replied with a smile, "As you wished. What else?"

"...Don't block an attack for me in the future." That single image was enough to haunt Wei Lian's dream.

Ji Yue pondered for a moment.

Wei Lian asked, "Do you promise?"

Ji Yue shook his head. "This I cannot promise."

Wei Lian said, overstepping his limit, "I'm going to be mad."

Ji Yue helplessly leaned closer, "We cannot promise even if it means having you angry at us."

"We do not want to put you in danger, but if one day, the danger approaches you, we will block it for you again unheedingly." Ji Yue looked at the youth and said, "We don't want you to be angry at us, but more than that, we don't want you to get hurt."🥺🥹🥺

Wei Lian turned to Ji Yue and said angrily, "But I-—" I also don't want you to get hurt even more so!

"No buts." Ji Yue gently stopped him.

"We promised that what had happened on that day would not repeat. We can protect ourselves, so don't worry."

Wei Lian: "..."

Ji Yue was not very persuasive, especially when covering with bandages.

"That day...A-Lian cried because of me." Ji Yue suddenly changed his address again and said with a shallow smile, "Even if there is only one drop, it hurts more than the arrow piercing through my flesh and bone."🥹😭

Wei Lian remembered that arrow, while Ji Yue remembered Wei Lian's single tear.

Wei Lian had always been calm and strong. Ji Yue had never seen such obvious fear and panic in the youth's eyes, accompanied by heartbreaking vulnerability and confusion. Even at a glance, it should be clear to him just how much Wei Lian loves him.

This book is basically a super sweet romance that doesn’t require much brainpower.

The MC is a shameless little troublemaker who brings energy and mischief to every scene while the ML is the epitome of a supportive and doting partner who lets the MC be exactly who they are. Both characters are portrayed as strong individuals who also embrace their human imperfections, which makes their interactions quite interesting to read.

However...while the character dynamics are engaging, the world-building is quite a mess. The palace drama is handled in a very surface-level manner and lacks the research that could have made it immersive and the settings are not fleshed out in detail which is a bit annoying for me.

Another aspect that detracts from my enjoyment is the treatment of the epidemic subplot. The outbreak arrives and is resolved in a ridiculously short time, with infected characters bouncing back almost instantly in a way that completely breaks any sense of realism.

But besides that..this is a good pick when you want to relax with a cute and funny romance that lets you switch off your brain for a while. It has a lovable couple and plenty of humorous moments.

Completed!

Let me try to draw out my opinion for this, first is, the story ending is quite satisfying, the extras are fun, many times I end up not reading extra for some reason

The main couple are overpowered, and omnipotent. If this is your taste then I suggest reading this. But I personally find this kinda less intriguing when the main characters are too omnipotent, there's no worthy opponent nor heavy and hard twist of problem to solve. You can just sit and bam, all problem solved. I don't think this is bad, sometimes I enjoy reading this kind of plot but considering 119 chapter of main story this kinda lost it's spark in the middle. But that's probably my only opinion

On last line, I would just say the couple are cute tho, give it a try of you guys enjoy "love after marriage" trope

A heart-warming story about court drama, relationship drama, war and love.

No, seriously, there's little to no angst, plenty of comedy at the start, and only minor squabbling in this pairing. Wei Lian and Ji Yue are both quite mature characters, and balance their identities as rulers of nations with being lovers quite well.

The extras are explained as bonus stories not connected to the main plot, but honestly, with how unrealistic some bits were, especially in regards to how OP the two main leads are, adding that fantasy element actually helps maintain the sensibility of the plot lol.

Either way, a very fun read! Quick page turner. The translation is also painstakingly done! I applaud the TL-er.

The couple in this was great and their romance was incredibly sweet. The political intrigue was definitely not the best but it was entertaining enough. The background characters were very nothing for most of the novel, but the extras were quite fun! Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot, but it's not a favourite.

Tooth-achingly sweet story between a "cruel" emperor and his hostage prince, with a smidge of warring state era's political intrigues and general wuxia badassery. I cried several times. A 10/10 experience.

DNF - I lost interest after the couple got together. The plot wasn’t interesting enough to keep me invested.

It's unassuming and really quite wholesome. I would read more of this author.

Two extras, 10ish chapters each. The first one is reality swap of Wei Lian, it was fun. Second one, in the modern world, I decided to skip. Maybe I'll come back and read it eventually because I will miss these two.

I read this last year right before year ended and I could not find the official page to review it for a while because it’s not translated but every single time there’s a seven seas survey you bet this is the one I’ve been requesting again and again because the story is so beautiful and satisfying the way I cried about how tender they are. So many good romantic quotes.

This reminded me of how to survive as a villain at first, but you get so much more sweetness, and there is politics but at the end of the day, it’s a true romantic story.

It was so moving, the devotion and loyalty I felt their love to my bone. The writing is just so exquisite and it’s so satisfying. The extras are so funny. I laughed and cried. The pass box makes you feel that way and wholeheartedly think this is top three best Danmei couple. If you love deep passionate unwavering love this one is for you!

Perfection 🙌🥰
