Jake

Rate this book
Private Jake Elliott was apprehensive as he walked to the commander’s office. He couldn’t think of a single transgression which would have attracted the major’s attention. When he left the command building ten minutes later, he was still numbed by the short visit. Tomorrow, he would no longer be a cavalryman, but would be returning to the family ranch outside of Fort Benton in Montana Territory. But it was the reason he was being discharged before his enlistment expired that had been the biggest shock. His mother had been brutally murdered. If that hadn’t stunned him enough, it was when he learned that his father had committed the crime. When Jake boarded the riverboat that would take him home, he wasn’t planning to stay on the ranch for more than a few days. He’d soon be leaving to hunt down his father and find justice for his mother.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Thank God that Jake has a huge ranch he inherited because he must be the dumbest person on the planet. He immediately assumes that his father is a murderer and accepts that story without a critical thought. He then constructs a scenario that involved his father having an affair to make it somehow all make sense in his tiny little brain.

I have had the pleasure of enjoying most of Mr. Petit's outstanding western adventures, but this is his most compelling, as well as compassionate presentation this far! Fast moving series of unending adventures cover to cover!

Certainly five stars worthy, as Jake and his compadres pull no punches in their ongoing efforts to bring peace and justice to those responsible for their ongoing misdeeds! No slow downs throughout the entire series of fast moving western folklore adventures and Jake, despite his downfalls along the way, holds his head high and handles each new adventure in one commanding performance after the other!
Probably the most compelling and descriptive series of unending storylines I have had the opportunity to follow, as there are no slow downs throughout this compelling series of realistically western folklore justice leading to the ongoing demise of the bad guys! Too, Mr. Petit's outstandingly descriptive selection of characters once again proves his uncanny ability to bring the worst of the bad guys, as well as his phenomenal descriptive good guys, who pulls no punches in their ongoing efforts for justice!
Certainly recommend this compassionately motivated story to all readers but especially to all of you dyed in the wool western enthusiasts, as I am, will definitely find one of the most endearing western masterpieces you have ever read! Try it! I guarantee you will love following Jake, and his crew, as they are definitely worthy of your time!!!😃

Jake gets out of the army because the telegram reads father killed mother and left the ranch

Jake has no idea what's going on he can't believe his father would harm his mother after living in life I've never touching anyone even when he was mad. He can't believe his mother is gone and doesn't make sense out of what happened on July 2nd in the home that he grew up in. He rides in fort Benton and Jackson with the sheriff's office see if anything else is known about the case. No charges were pressed because no witnesses actually just possible hearsay just speculation. So Jake travels out to the elk ranch to see for himself what is going on. The house looks the same except for a little dust to here and there so Jake settles in his old bedroom and goes out to meet the ranch hands. Dave is out there the foreman and he surprises everyone by his return because it took three work weeks to get the telegram to him about his parents. By this time they thought he wasn't coming so they were all surprised to see him but wouldn't he explained he just got the telegram three days ago they all understood. None of them had any more information on what had happened but they did tell him about the burial of his mom and how she's buried beside his two brothers that died when they were very young.

Jake Elliott is stunned when he’s dismissed from the Calvary early to return home after his mother is murdered and his father is thought to be the killer and has fled the area. After he gets home, events occur that will lead him to not only find his father but learn that his fathers ranch foreman not only murder this mother but also his father. That he reunites with the sister of the girl he had wanted to marry before he left to join the Calvary. While it has some intrigue and romance it’s not as good as most of the authors earlier books but still a decent story.

5 STARS, FANTASTIC OLD WEST WESTERN, MYSTERY

This 5 STARS Western takes one to the old west & the area of northern Montana to a huge cattle ranch named the Elk. Jake grew up here as the only child because he was his parent's only child to survive to childhood on to adulthood. As one finds out his mother Rose is a very attractive & nice lady that shows him lots of love with praise, however, his father didn't believe in doing that because he felt the boy needed to grow up hard & to learn to be man enough to run the ranch.
Jake around 16 years old met a very full figured big breasted very pretty young girl in town not long after his birthday & was in love. They dated some 2 years & right before his 18th birthday he asked her to elope with him because his father had already told him no way was he going to accept her as his wife & he was to young to get married
She refused declaring her mother was severely ill & was basically on her death bed. Jake was so upset & let down that he wasn't going to stay & work for his father & now he had nobody else to drive him forward that he just decided to join the Army; his father couldn't make him come back to the Elk from there.
Yes, so far this could be the perfect old west western movie. The Father who had tanned skin, roughed & toughed from the sun, sand, & wind over the many years he had been out west fighting to carve his ranch out of the wilderness of what was Montana & Indian Country. He didn't just fight against the Indians for it, he also fought the elements from summer to winter including bone freezing cold to sun burning human skin & sand plus high wind burn, to all other men not Indians trying to steal it, the land's wildlife from bears to mountain lions, roaming wolves and then his unbroken horses to hundreds of heads of cattle to build that ranch with his wife. I can picture several old Hollywood stars playing that role. To get this straight this is what my impression of his father is & many of the men who work to build the foundation of an Empire for some reason tend to have these personalities. Now, the book has a really good Bloob. Hopefully, you have read it and are really interested in reading, Jake, I hope so, because my review gets a reader to around the end of chapter 1 or 2. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I enjoyed Jake. I like that it was clean, fun and the characters were human. I liked the ending but would have liked a little more closure for Jake. I think however, it did give him closure if he really thought about it. don't want to reveal anything about the ending since it would be a huge spoiler. I like it was long enough to give a good read, but not so long it would take days and days to reach the end. I would have enjoyed a "cozy" where we could continue in the story line to see how things progressed. I liked the epilogue but wished he could have turned it into the next book. I like that the author promises to keep his books clean with no explicit sex scenes but allows our imaginations to do the work. haha

C j Petit has created another compelling story. Jake was discharged from military service because his father was believed to have murdered his mother. He hurried to his large ranch where he met the foreman and dedicated cowboys. Jake couldn't believe his father could have killed his mother but it seemed that was true. On a visit to town, he meets a young woman who is intent on being his wife. The romance blossomed while Jake set out to find his father. Instead, he returned home to marry and set up a new home. Soon, it became apparent, that the foreman had murdered his father and mother. This was a fast moving story as Jake turn to the sheriff to pursue the foreman. Eventually, the foreman was eliminated and Jake and his bride settled down to an idyllic life. It was an interesting story with several twists and turns. A romance with justice intertwined.
Another interesting novel.

I found this story very slow and quite boring. I also found some of the words like "damp bottom" after intimacy was a strange thing to put into the story and really didn't have to be there. There were so many errors throughout the story that threw me off and had to go back to reread what they were trying to say. It just did not stir up any interest as the story line was dull and unexciting. A couple of times I just about deleted it but thought it may catch my interest later on in the story. This is only my review and others may have a very different slant when reading it.

Wow!

I'm sure if their are people who have read my reviews about C.J. Petit's books they will get tired of seeing them. However, with that being said, I still believe he is one of the best authors I've ever read. Just when I think his stories can'tget any more different,he proves me wrong. This was an incredible book like all of the others and I think it might even be one of my favorites. I have to say he is my number one author! I recommend his books to everyone. I just can't say enough good things about his writing.

Jake

Make was due to muster out of the army in three months and had plans to sign up again so to be paged to go to the Commander's office came as a surprise. He knew that he hadn't done anything to merit a meeting with the Commander, he was just a private, nobody important. However, the news the Commander would change his life forever. The unthinkable had happened, his dear Mother had been murdered, and his Father had disappeared , he was needed to go home. It was just too much to take in, but the army was going to give him an early discharge..What would happen when he got home at this point was anybody's bet. He was now a man with a mission to find out what had happened to his dear Mama. Great Read!!!!

Twists and Turns

I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this novel. I hadn't left a review after reading it for the first time, but I had to leave one this time. His novels are so well written, they are like a river. The words just keep flowing along. One becomes the main character in your mind. Keeping an eye out for an ambush or checking one's Winchester. It is like watching a TV show only better as one plays the main role.

Father's Pride

Another great story from CJ Petit. Jake grew up in a large cattle ranch but a father who did not show how proud he was of his son. Jake's father and mother were killed by the foreman. Jake had to track his father who he thought killed his mom. A very wonderful story of family and love of a young couple.

Another interesting book from Mr. Petit. Multiple murders and the efforts to find and bring the perpetrator to justice. This book contains an interesting perception of ranch life that is different from that I had always perceived in the past. Romance in was also quite different from most books that contain a story with romance being woven into the story line. Justice that is meted out to the perpetrator and by whom adds still another twist to a delightful story.

Started out slow but worth the read

I almost gave up on this book . This would have been the first Petit book returned but I stuck with it and said " no I will continue". At the end, I conceded I was incorrect in my assumptions. This one was one of all the his books that I remember most. I hope it will touch you as it did me.

Great Story of the American West.

C.J. Petit never fails to entertain me with his tales of the American West. This story has many twists and turns. Jake heard a terrible story about his father that made him seek answers, but what he found caused him to see people he cared for in a different light.

My kinda woman!!!

I never ever thought I would be reading about myself written by someone who has never met me. Absolutely amazing! So much intelligent insight in this book. So much wise handling of the subject. The story line is unusual and the handling of the story so very insightful. Just an all around excellent book.

Classic old western with joy, tragedy & redemption

Petit has penned a classic Western Novel full of open spaces, family turmoil, friendship, love, hate, unexpected twists, loneliness and sudden redemption, all capped off with none other than suspected Divine Intervention. You cannot put this book down.

Another masterpiece

An amazing story of the life of Jake Elliott. His father never gave him praise or showed him love. When it appeared his father had murdered his wonderful mother, Jake had to right that wrong. But things never seemed to work out as different events kept changing his plans. A wonderful and fun read.

It's all in what you are looking for.

Jake had decided early in life what he had to do to succeed. He understood it was through others. Those you worked for, those who worked for you and mostly developing a great family relationship. But never fear, Petit understands how to add adversity to build character.

Enjoyed very much. I had an early on. that he was the killer just for a different reason. Was glad I was wrong. Jake was a great guy, liked him and his way of thinking. Glad he married Sara, she was so strong minded and frisky.Just right for Jake, also admired his horses they were well trained. Definitely deserves a

A different western

Delving into a person's motives is a good tool. Who could know where this man was coming from. Why he would kill. There was a sociopathic element. From a child's viewpoint his father was cold and unloving. But to any adult he was an honorable man.

Jake by C. J. Petit. A good book with some mystery. I loved the characters and the storyline. I read the entire book wondering who was the real murderer. There's also a romance that's in the middle of it all.

Excellent!!!

C.J.Petit can hang words together very well and I enjoy all his books. The characters were done well, but I was sorta expecting a hidden note from Jake's dad to be found. But the way you ended it was good.
