Lady Julia Reynolds finds that she must be on guard against the strength of the passions she inspires and her own unexpected weakness when faced with three suitors--notorious rake Robert Hammond, the upright Earl of Bradford, and the Prince of Wales
Barbara (Booth) Hazard, a resident of Exeter, NH, died on October 25, 2019 in Boston, MA surrounded by family. Born in 1931 in Fall River, MA, the daughter of Albert L. and Lillian (Holland) Booth, she was raised and educated in New England. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1953 and was briefly employed by Ginn & Company in Boston as a Technical Editor. She married Donald T. Hazard in 1954 and next worked as a Graphic Designer/Artist for a Concord, NH advertising firm.
Originally trained as a musician, Mrs. Hazard also studied oil painting with Amy Jones and for a time had several shows in New York and Vermont. She began to write historical fiction in 1978. First published in 1981, she went on to write and publish 48 books, several of which are also in circulation abroad. She won several awards for her writing.
Mrs. Hazard wrote that there were several things in her life that she was most proud of; being Concertmaster of the MA All State Orchestra in Symphony Hall in Boston, having a successful career as an artist and as a writer, which was her greatest love besides her husband, three sons and their wives.
She loved New England and in particular, Cape Cod, which she visited every year for most of her life. Her other loves included her family, reading and music. She also wrote under the pen name of Lillian Lincoln.
Lady Julia Reynolds had a morning visitor to her parlor, arriving before her other visitors, bearing a bouquet of long stem roses. After complements, news of society events, he offers Lady Julia a pitch of snuff from an ornate snuff box. The Lady didn't take the offer though noticed the open box revealed a miniature painted nude woman, the portrait face looking similar to hers! Shock! Lady Julia ordered him to close the box. The Perv then claimed to be smitten with her, the Lady not returning his desires, he leaves. That Perv was Prinny?
Does Lady Julia possess the snuff box belonging to Prinny? Pervy Prinny hopes the lovely Lady will show it to him at their next meeting? Well, no one within her residence knows of nor has seen that snuffbox. Lady Julia sends Prinny's letter back along with her own letter telling him she hasn't his snuffbox!
Colonel Lake orders the Earl of Bradford to a sensitive special mission to inquire, locate & return Prinny's Perv snuffbox to his Royal Highness. Col. Lake suggests Lady Julia may use the snuffbox to blackmail Prinny. Does Lady Julia's virtues hide some devious design?
Then Prinny becomes more persistent, sending her letters, pages of compliments, & expensive gifts. Col. Lake assumes Lady Julia is plotting something sinister. Lord Trevor, Earl of Bradford, gets his Mom to introduce him to Lady Julia at a social event. His Mom assures him that Lady Julia is an excellent woman with a beautiful singing voice.
Lord Trevor pays a visit to Lady Julia, & he as subtle as a large hammer, demands that Lady Julia give him the snuffbox Prinny left at her residence. & so it begins,...Lady Julia telling his Lordship she doesn't have the snuffbox, & she feels highly insulted by Prinny's Perving on her, relentless. How to make Prinny stop his attentions on her?
Chapter 4 - Lord Trevor becomes aggressive with Lady Julia, grabs her arm, tells her he is official with household of the King, & the snuffbox could be used by enemies of Prinny, the King, etc., to gain an advantage, so she'd better give up the snuffbox or else...After threatening her he tells her he will come the next day & she'd best give up the snuffbox then, or...
An unknown note is sent to Carlton House saying they have the snuffbox & asking for money in exchange for the boxes' return to Prinny. Lord Trevor takes the letter to Lady Julia, she reads it, then gives him a sample of her writing. After the stalker/anti-hero Lord Trevor leaves, Lady Julia figures out which of her visitors that day might have seen the snuffbox, pocketed it & walked away. I lost interest in this story, it became tedious with the heroine suspecting Rake Robert Hammond, more about Prinny, dis jointed interactions with Lord Trevor, & others involved. Basically, Prinny was the worst & overused in this story. I didn't like the stalker, accusing the heroine, supposed hero. That's never love, that's obsession with Mommy issues. Ph*ck the snuffbox!
