Never Say Never #2

One Guy I'd Never Date

Rate this book
Never date your brother’s best friend

There is one guy on my ‘do not date’ list. Zach Gallagher. It’s not that I’m not attracted to him. Because I’ve been crushing on him since I was ten.

The trouble is, he still treats me like I’m that kid who fell for him. Oh, and did I mention that he’s my brother’s best friend? Attraction or no, he’s totally off limits.

When a Thanksgiving camping trip (which wasn’t my idea) goes wrong and forces me to accept Zach’s help, I have trouble remembering all the reasons he’s on the list.

Then the drop-dead gorgeous deputy has the nerve to show interest, and I have to figure out how to navigate the new normal. Teasing turns into flirting . . . until my brother figures it out. He hates the idea of his little sister dating his best friend.

When Zach asks me out, I’m forced to choose, which is heart wrenching. But breaking up a twenty-year friendship is even worse. What am I going to do?

One Guy I'd Never Date is a sweet romantic comedy with heartwarming characters and a touch of sizzle that will have you laughing your way to the happily ever after.

Y'all. I told you there was going to be some binge-reading in my future! 🤣 In case anyone is wondering, I ended up reading way past my bedtime and woke up extra early to sneak in some more reading. I absolutely love books that can do that!

What can I say about Haley and Zach?! I'll start with... I love them! They are seriously too stinkin cute together. Poor Haley kept finding herself in some pretty embarrassing situations but y'all... they were hilarious! And I loved how Zach always came to her rescue. Watching these two spend time together and slowly realize they were falling in love had this girl letting out all the dreamy sighs! I say the patio had a lot to do with it. Who knew patios could be so romantic?

Speaking of... can I just tell you how much I love Zach's patio?! I seriously need one of those in my life. I can picture it now... relaxing outside, reading a good book and eating some of that snackalicious popcorn. I may or may not have highlighted the recipe in the book so I can make it for myself sometime soon. 😉

I loved seeing Adam and Eve (this still cracks me up!) again and meeting some new characters. All of them really do make the book that much better. Although I will say, Hank needs a good ol' swift kick in the butt. That man was making me cRaZy! I really hope Nacha gives him a run for his money and doesn't take him back right away. That man needs to be humbled... 🤣

I am absolutely loving this series! It is SO fun! I want to devour all of the books as fast as I can but then I want to read them slowly so I can savor every minute of them. The struggle is real y'all! Haha.

Ms. Carrington has another hit on her hands! Any author who can literally make me bust out laughing is a keeper. Finding new authors is the best! I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next. 😊

Y'all... I'm in love with this casting! They are absolutely perfect, don't you think?!

I really enjoyed this one! Probably even more than the first book. I loved Haley and Zach. Haley has been crushing on Zach since they were kids and he became best friends with her older brother. He never really saw her as anything other than a friend though. But, now that they're all grown up they've been spending more time together and it was fun to watch those feelings change. They had fun chemistry and couldn't help but flirt together. I thought this was a fun read, kept me glued to the pages and it's one I'd enjoy reading again.

This was a hard one. Not the story itself, it is a cute story, even though the ending is no surprise.

I just didn’t feel the storytelling at all. And based on the reviews, it is probably more me then the story.

For so many pages a book, the actual relation didn’t get many of them. It just speeds up, without going in detail about finally being together and exploring their bond besides their friendship. She crushed the guy for 20 years… how was it to finally have her love answered?
It even feels like they never step out of their friendship. She slept in the guest room, he is giving pecks to the forehead, a kiss here and a cuddle there.
With all the tension building up to becoming a couple, it didn’t really feel as that romcom ending at all. And I am definitely not needed 50 shades of grey, but the lack of feeling and details during the whole story just didn’t grip me to be honest.

This was a fun story! I enjoyed the characters and seeing old friends from the previous book. You don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one but I would recommend it. I loved how the relationship between Zach and Hailey grew from mostly acquaintances, to awareness to friends to more. Once Zach was all in, he was all in and that made me happy. Good chemistry and build up. I'm looking forward to the next book!

I just wasn't feeling this story.
I mean, I felt the hurt the FMC felt when her crush treated her like a kid sister, but that's it. I didn't get half of MMC's reactions or attitude towards FMC, maybe because we only have her POV. But it was hard to get into their personalities.
There was hardly any chemistry in this one (1st kiss was at about 70%).
The characters were in their 30s, and their dialogues and attitude made them sound like they were in their early 20's.
Their jobs seemed to be forgotten. They are in their 30's, they are professionals at their jobs by now, but I felt like they didn't even work at all.
MMC is a cop/investigator - where? It felt like he was always home. His job/schedule didn't affect his life at all. We didn't get to see how his job affected anything. And I can't even remember what FMC does.

It also confused me that her brother missed most of the events he organised or left. He was not very mature about them and was quite frustrated-it actually felt like he was trying to control his sister and then sabotage their decisions. I didn't like him.

Just got this book today and just ate the whole book up. Zach is dreamy, Haley is a wonderful FMC, and the sneaky cat 🤣. It is a little more then a novella but came be read in day and makes the perfect binge read. I want a relationship like Zach and Haley's and for a shorter book there was so much feels-Love, emotional intimacy, and some drama. The Perfect mixture for such a read. Now I got to go read the rest of the series!

More Than a Pair of Jeans, #1 - Lovely. Funny. Cute. I had so much fun reading this sweet romance. Wonderful characters and interesting story lines. Written by a lovely Texan and set in Texas, complete with horses, cattle and goats. Cannot forget about the mice and kittens. Plenty of social media, too. Has a preview of the story. 5*

More Than a Pretty Face, #2 - I just love this series. This story has such cute and sweet characters with plenty of humor. No silly mind games, just people trying to make a life with the person that they love while taking care of their friends. Living well, working hard and loving with all their hearts and souls. 5*

Stargazer Springs Ranch series:
Wrangled by Lilith, #1 - I love this sweet, funny story, even when the last page came too soon. Everyone was good people whom I met before with the Stargazer Cowboy series. The dialog between Beau and Lily had me hurting from all the belly laughs. Ava added her share to the mix. Good story lines. Texans will especially enjoy this book, location and dialog. 5*

Enchanted by Joji, #2 - I love the books Remi writes. Well-written, romantic, funny, and nice characters you wish were real. Actually, you'll find people like them all over Texas. This second chance romance for a couple of 40-somethings is another fun read in this series. It is without the typical drama found in other books where she's a nut job and he has no backbone. Both work through their pasts to reach their future without the stupid formula problems, drama and actions. A feel good story. 5*

Helped by Ava, #3 - Ava is so strong in all the other books, yet, here was a bit of a headcase with her lack of self-confidence. But all worked out in this sweet, funny marriage-to-dating romance. That lil youngin Mason shared some good advice. The Mrs. Kravitz church member met her Samantha, mean ole biddy. 4*

Inspired by Mindy, #4 - You're never too old to change. Sweet. Romantic. They are both headcases, they get better once the ball gets rolling and they're working towards the same goal. The route they take is old fashioned and I love it. It is one of the best ways to learn about the other. Sir had his act together. 4*
Stargazer Springs Ranch series end.

Never Say Never Series:
Three Things I'd Never Do!, #1 - I read Enchanted by Joji when I discovered this series featured characters that would later appear in the Stargazer Springs Ranch series. Skid to a halt and shifted to reading this sweet, funny romance. I love all the characters, the interesting story lines, and the fact the author does not do the typical stupid formula, nut jobs and immature, stupid drama and decisions. It is easy to slip into one of Remi's well written books and not come back to reality until the last page. So have the next book on hand. Spoiler: The last bathroom scene is original and just as great as the first bathroom scene. Sweet and clean, nothing nasty. 5*

One Guy I'd Never Date, #2 - They have been in love for twenty years but did not know it. Big Brother keeps his Little Sister and his Best Friend apart while he did not follow that rule with her friend and co-worker. Carrot is a bit silly and Zach is not perfect. He puts beans in chili but he did have Moon Pies and RCs (RahC and chocolate or banana Moon Pies, best dessert mix back in the 60s). Waldo is a hoot. 4*

Two Words I'd Never Say Again, #3 - This is so much fun to read. There is a lot of humor, along with one of my favorite characters, Joji. Joji teamed up with Nacha's mom is a continuous hoot. Mix in the rest of the cast and it is just a sweet second chance romance story. 5*

One Choice I'd Never Make, #4 - I love Lilith and Joji, and now I love Cami. This was so much fun to read. No head games, just someone who knew she was good enough; no lack of self-confidence for Cami. Harper is so romantic and has a good head on his shoulders. Man, it is difficult not to go into book report mode. Fun. Romance. Wonder support characters, just like a large family or old-fashioned neighborhood where everyone had your back. 5*

Three Rules I’d Never Break!, #5 - All the guys in these three related series are great. This is a cute romance complete with a dog, a goat and a '71 Datsun. 5*

Two Risks I’d Never Take Again!, #6 - Sweet. Funny. Relaxing little romance with the same fun gang and a new story line. There are several chapters giving updates on the whole gang two years later. 5*

One Whopper of a Love Story, #7 - A fun tale about a mermaid and 21 frogs and the guy who rescued her. Layla is a fun person and Nico is another of the perfect guys. 5*
Never Say Never Series ends.

Kissing Holly - A simply cute, sweet romance between two people who knew each other in school. He was dating her older sister in high school. They are perfect for each other with their large caring hearts, their sense of humor and their holiday names. There is a lot of joking about their names. Plenty of humor. Plenty of love. Plenty of feel good and happiness. 5*

I LOVED, LOVED, and LOVED this book!

I personally love the trope in general but I just loved how Remi executed it as well!

(4.5 stars) - well done story (& I want Zach's patio, too!)

The best friend's sister trope isn't one of my favorites - I don't dislike it, but it's fairly limited in what you can change up, so these stories tend to be a bit on the cookie cutter side. That said, I enjoyed what the author did with it, and I think those who like the trope will especially enjoy it.

Haley has always felt like the 3rd wheel to Zach & Hank's bromance - even as a full-fledged adult, they still make her feel like the annoying, tagalong kid sister. But perceptions aren't always quite accurate.

I love the way Zach & Haley are so well-tuned to each other. Hank's in a miserable place in his life, so it's understandable that they're trying not to shake things up for him, but it's still frustrating when they let him dictate their lives. The way they finally work things out is wonderful - and I hope the next book will be able to redeem Hank for me as well as Nacha 😉

*Romance level: passionate kisses, nothing graphic

I like the protagonists but the brother, Hank, was so immature that he ruined a lot of the book for me. I have never understood that rule about best friends not dating the younger sister. If he’s your best friend, is he not the best man you know? Wouldn’t you want a good man to date your sister? I can understand discouraging it in high school since most guys are not mature yet and kind of focused on sex, but for pity’s sake, they are in their thirties now! Ugh!

After "meeting" Haley in book 1, I could not wait to read her story in book 2. The author did not disappoint. This was a sweet and clean romance, I found myself charmed by Haley and Zach. Their romance made me smile and I finished the book with a happy heart. Their HEA was perfection.

I felt so bad for Haley in the beginning. Poor girl, pinning over a guy who didn't notice her. Then that camping trip! OY VEY! Could things get any worse for her (they do and they did!). I loved how close Haley and Zach were even before they started getting romantic. It made their falling in love even more believable. They have a 20 year history since he's her brother's best friend (he's 4 years older than her so it sort of makes sense that he never noticed her romantically).

Their first kiss *swoon*! And when Zach goes all in, he really goes all in. I kept alternating between smiling and swooning. As much as I liked him, I liked Haley. The author really did a fantastic job with this couple.

I do have to say that I'm sick of the "my best friend can't date my sister" trope. I won't be reading any more books that use this plot device. The way Hank acted in this book was unacceptable. He was a selfish and immature jerk. I doubt I will read his book. I liked Nacha but I didn't like her enough to put up with Hank. Harper intrigued me, I'm looking forward to read his book.

It was great catching up with Eve and Adam. This book starts as Adam and Eve start getting serious and then progresses through to their marriage. It is a stand alone, however, you will enjoy it more if you read book 1 first.

Haley
Zach

Haley’s had a crush on Zach since they were kids, but Zach always looked at her as the little sister of his best friend. Haley has tried hard to treat Zach as just a friend but she can’t seem to get it accomplished. She always keeps in mind that her brother told her it’s against the rules to date his friends. Zach is, Haley’s brother, Hank’s best friend. Zach has recently broke up with his fiancé. When Hank talks them all into getting together for Thanksgiving Haley agrees only to find out they are to go camping. At the last minute Hank has to work and will meet them at the campsite. After Haley gets a sprained ankle, cactus spines and poison oak they head back to Zach’s house. Haley tries hard to be the good sister and has for years where Zach is concerned, when she finally tries to make Hank understand her feelings he stops talking to her. Zach is a good best friend but when he truly discovers Haley for the woman she is, he tries to make Hank understand but Hank stops talking to him also. I liked both Haley and Zach they have good chemistry. Hank has a change of heart only after is ex wife, Nacha, calls him out. I thought Haley put up with too much from Hank. Zach started seeing his friend Hank in a different light, when Hank told him we both know love doesn’t last. This is a good sweet romance. I would read more books by the author and the series.

Lacks immersive imagery, tension and plausibility.

I stopped reading at 41%. I was talking to my mom about books I’d been reading, and I couldn’t recall the details of this book that I’d been reading just two nights ago. I picked it up again today and started reading at chapter 13 and couldn’t recall who the characters were or identify the POV character. So I decided to stop reading the story.

The camping scene with the lead characters is too quick of a pass to be enjoyable or to have adequate tension. Why didn’t the brother show up? Huh? The quick accident with an injury and subsequent “babying” also lack romantic anticipation. The blind date scene has potential, but instead of escalating, it fizzles out.

So far, the characters are mostly names on the page with dialog. They need more nuanced personalities and memorable visual cues, movements, and idiosyncrasies. There is some inner turmoil over the “rule” to not date a sibling’s best friend, some not so funny regressive behaviors, some possible mild stalking, and barely tense interactions with an ex-fiancée. I wish the author would revise this novel to feel less like an outline of a quick succession of events and more like stepping into another person’s journey, where the scenes are moment-by-moment.

What a cute story! "Brother's best friend is my lifelong crush" is... quite a trope, and it can go either way, but in this case it worked out.

Haley put Zach, her brother's best friend, on her "cannot date" list -- but that doesn't mean she wouldn't do it if the chance came up. So for decades she has been the third wheel in the friendship and kept her swooning to herself. But then she has an accident that literally pushes her into the arms of the man of her dreams.

They dance around each other (sometimes literally) for months while Haley watches Zach catch up to her feelings and take brotherly teasing over to passionate flirting.

There is actually no logical reason why they shouldn't be together: they are adults; they are both single; they are wildly attracted to each other. But they also have Hank, the obstacle in the middle who puts his feelings and his bias before the happiness of both his friend and his sister, spending far too long pouting instead of allowing their love to grow.

Brothers are protective, sure, but they also have to listen to what their sisters are saying. He really bored me.

I was sceptical about Zach at first because he has a bit of a possessive streak. However he redeemed himself with clearer communication towards the end.

My oh my! I started reading this book at night when my husband was trying to get some shuteye. It was so funny that I had to clamp my hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t laugh out loud but my suppressed giggles made the bed shake—sorry honey! If you want to read a really romantic story with a few zany scenes and loads of witty banter as well as touching moments and swoony kisses then get this book! It’s a real upper in these sometimes downer days of 2020. In One Guy I’d Never Date, Haley has had a big crush on her brother’s best friend since they were kids. Now everyone is grown up but the big brother has laid down the law forbidding either from acting on the crush and his rule should never be broken. Never say never! This book is fine as a standalone but if you read book one you’ll be glad you did as it’s great and there is some overlap with the characters in these two books. Highly recommend! I was entrusted with a copy of this book by the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.

One Guy I'd Never Date is so much fun to read! Haley gets herself in situations that are embarrassing for her, but hilarious for the reader. She's had a crush on Zach for years, but she's always been Hank's little sister, Carrot. I enjoyed reading about the mixed signals that Zach and Haley sent each other because they didn't want to mess up Zach and Hank's friendship, but were very interested in each other. The plot moves along at a good pace and definitely kept my interest. There's a great HEA. I'd recommend this to family and friends that read clean/wholesome romance and enjoy some humor along the way. I hope to read more from Remi Carrington as I love her writing style. I am very much looking forward to Nacha and Hank's story.
(I have to admit that I'd like to make some of Zach's snackalicious popcorn.)
I received a complimentary copy. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this well-written romance.

I’m enjoying this sweet romance series, but sometimes the writing is a little off. It feels like parts of scenes or conversations were left out… nothing to change the storyline, but the characters sometimes jump from outside to inside in the blink of an eye, or will mention a conversation that didn’t happen. No impact to the story, but it’s a little jarring.

The characters were very immature, especially Hank, and I just don’t believe they’re in their 30s. They read like they’re 18. We hardly saw Eve at all, even though she’s besties with Haley and in the first book they talk CONSTANTLY.

I didn’t know what any of the characters did for work until way into the book! It was like the author forgot she never told us. Odd details like that were left out.

I received an ARC to review: from early in the book I couldn't choose between laughing or cringing at the mortifying situations Carrot got herself into! 😂 Remi splashes humour, chemistry, family relationship woes, cringe-worthy mishaps & predicaments, raw emotions, charming, romantic guys, BFFs and heartbreak all on her story-canvas - giving a colourful montage that will have you chuckling, frowning, tearing up and swooning all in one sitting - because you will be rooted to the spot and unable to move once starting this book!

Language: squeaky clean.
Sex: none - chemistry & attraction are described, as it spicy kissing.
Triggers: divorce, unrequited love, bad camping experiences! 😜
