I can't remember a time when I didn't want to write or wasn't writing.

As a little girl growing up in the Bronx, I told my friends stories I made up, but pretended were true (imagined reality was better received by the audience). I wrote my first short story when I was twelve. In middle school, I'd submit book reports about my own stories with fake author names. Never caught and always received an A. Under my graduation picture in the Evander Childs High School yearbook next to "ambition," it said writer. Marriage, children, and career sidelined my true passion, but didn't squelch it.

Getting It Right came to me in scenes. I finished the first draft in a year. It took a very long time to re-write it. Since finishing it, I've written two more books and am working on a fourth.

Tangled Lies, an award-winning mystery, came out last year and Reckonings, women's suspense fiction releases June 2022.

This remarkable novel, written with great insight and compassion, sets out to solve a crime but in doing so, it brings together two women. Vera and Danni are vividly drawn characters who work together to find justice and resolution. Well worth reading.

I love a good thriller and this one kept me guessing. "Tangled Lies" is a hefty adventure showcasing multi-layered characters caught up in modern and realistic calamities. At the same time, I don't know that I have ever experienced so much heart at the center of a suspenseful story as I did in this novel. Osborne is masterful at depicting real personal anguish along with brazen corruption and all the nuances of morality found in between.

The story traces two women struggling to get past their own worst instincts in a search for truth and happiness. Vera and Dani form an unpredictable partnership that rolls out in a masterfully paced tale. Throughout the entire story, I felt like I was in the strong hands of an author who knew exactly where she was taking us on this daredevil ride toward personal resolution and a search for justice.

By the end, I felt like I had made two new friends of the lead characters. Osborne navigates the precarious landscape of race and class in this thoroughly satisfying mystery that we can all relate to.

Tangled Lies is a thriller with all of the intrigue and mystery required of the genre. But it is so much more!! The two main characters are Vera, a mother grieving the brutal death of her son and Dani, a young Irish woman on the run. Despite their very obvious differences, the two women come together and so begins a dangerous journey to discover the truth. Seeking justice and hoping to begin to move forward with their shattered lives, Vera and Dani learn to trust each other in this thrilling and compassionate story. I highly recommend this book.

A severed head, deliberate accident, and a missing memory card plunge three unlikely strangers into a life-and-death mission: a mother chasing sobriety and answers, a young woman struggling to turn lies into truth, and a seductive socialite trapped in a world of excess. You won't be able to put this book down!

Right from the start it was fast paced and had me wondering what Charlie did to end up that way. Multiple POV’s and short chapters kept me turning the pages til the end. There’s just something about getting a little perspective from the villain that gets me invested. I think it adds to the story and enforces my hope that the “good guys” put the pieces together and come out on top. I loved the unlikely friendship from Dani and Vera as well as learning about them both throughout the story. Great thriller/mystery.

Murder mysteries are not my usual fare, but Karen E. Osborne’s Tangled Lies gives us an unlikely pair of intriguing heroines: Vera, an elderly African American woman, and Dani, a young, compulsive liar of unknown ethnicity but whose life is in shambles. They meet when Vera is in a car accident; her request to Dani for help becomes Dani’s lifeline. Together they face thugs and deceptions to solve the murder of Vera’s son. It is in exploring the imperfections of these characters and how they help one another that the novel shines.

Tangled Lies is a deftly written combination of suspense and women’s fiction. The author intricately weaves the story of two women from different backgrounds and cultures who join forces to right a wrong and find a murderer. I was immediately drawn into the lives of Osborne’s well-developed characters and was intrigued by their emotional connections and the fast-paced plot. Highly recommended!

Karen E. Osborne, the author of “Tangled Lies,” has written an intense and suspenseful novel. The genres for this novel are Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense. The timeline for this story is set in the present and goes to the past regarding the events and characters. The author vividly describes her colorful and dramatic characters as complex and complicated, greedy, socially dysfunctional, and flawed. There are betrayals, lies, threats, danger, and murder.

Vera Moon comes home to find that her son Charlie has been violently murdered. Vera is determined to find the murderer and get justice. As Vera is driving with her daughter, another driver seems to charge toward her and causes an accident. A young woman, Dani, witnesses the deliberate crash and goes over to help. Dani has problems in her life and plans to leave many of her problems behind. Dani often embellishes the truth or tells lies she feels won’t hurt anyone.

Vera and Dani join forces to find out what is going on. Why would someone kill Charlie and then try to hurt Vera and her daughter? Different characters provide information and clues as to why this is going on. It is very difficult to differentiate the truth from the lies. In addition, there are threats and constant danger.

The search for truth and justice could very well be the death of Vera and Dani. There are twists and turns. There is a cast of suspect characters. I highly recommend this suspenseful book to others.

• 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄
After Vera finds her son, Charlie, murdered in their shared apartment, she makes it her mission to avenge his death and find his killer, if it’s the last thing she does.

• 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓
Vera comes home one winter evening to find her son, Charlie, dead in his room. 3 months later, nobody has been arrested for his murder, but Vera isn’t giving up. Then, when Dani, a young woman about to flee New York for better opportunities elsewhere, witnesses an accident involving Vera. Recognizing the woman who lost her son, Dani vows to help her however she can. The two become fast friends as they track down Charlie’s killer together.

This was an interesting story that had me hooked from chapter one. I enjoyed all of the different POVs as well. I wasn’t sure who to trust or believe, and I was definitely a little shocked at who the killer was. In the end, I should have seen it coming! My favorite character is a tie between Dani and Vera though. As a mother, I could empathize with her loss and pain. But Dani was closer to my age, and suffering from a breakup and having to move due to no job, so she was fairly relatable as well. All in all, this is a quick paced read that’ll have you wondering what the heck all of these shady characters are involved in!

A gripping novel that follows the story of Vera Moon, an African American grandmother who discovers her son Charlie brutally murdered. Fueled by her grief and a desire for justice, Vera sets out to find the killer, but soon finds herself caught in a dangerous game of deception and betrayal.

As Vera searches for clues, she becomes involved in a hit-and-run accident that brings her into contact with Dani, a young Irish American woman with a troubled past. Despite their differences, Vera and Dani form an unlikely partnership as they try to unravel the web of lies surrounding Charlie's murder.

As the two women delve deeper into the case, they soon discover numerous secrets and hidden motives at play--the truth may be much more complicated than they initially thought. With danger lurking around every corner, Vera and Dani must navigate a treacherous landscape of deception and betrayal if they hope to bring Charlie's killer to justice and find peace for themselves.

Tangled Lies is a masterfully written thriller guaranteed to rivet readers from beginning to end. I read it in a night. Osborne expertly weaves together a complex web of characters and plotlines, creating a story that is both suspenseful and emotionally resonant. Highest recommendation for fans of suspense and mystery novels. 5 Stars!

This is a great thriller that teams up two unlikely heroines. Vera, one of the heroines, has a mother’s guilt and love which helps fuel the plot forward.
Dani, the other heroine of the book, transforms over the course of the read. Her character’s growth added depth to this book and was my favorite part.

The book is told in multiple view points which I felt was a great way to present this complex story. At first, I thought the book would be solely about solving the murder of Vera’s son, Charlie. It becomes quickly evident after Vera and her daughter, Liza, are the target of a hit-and-run car wreck that there is much more going on than one murder.

Dani is one of characters that witness the hit and run. She is a compulsive embellisher. She vows to help Vera who is a stranger to her. These two women must figure out who to trust to get to the truth.

The book knots together deceit, racism, politics, murder, with added twists that make for riveting read.

I knew from the opening chapter that this would be a heart-wrenching and chilling thriller.

Vera Moon, an African-American grandmother, comes home to find her son, Charlie, brutally murdered. Of course, as a mom, she is determined to find his killer.

Things get twisted when Vera is in a hit-and-run accident. A young woman, trying to run from the mess in her own life, witnesses the accident and forms a bond with Vera. The two have put themselves in danger, but ultimately it may bring justice.

Tangled Lies brings together two unlikely but flawed characters to solve a murder. Karen Osborne brings in themes of racism and crime, as well as restoration and forgiveness. The short chapters and dual perspective keep the pace quick and tense.

Very enjoyable. Vera, a seventy-year-old, God-fearing, African-American woman, grieves for her murdered son, while the investigation into his death is going nowhere. Not long later, a near-fatal car crash brings first Dani, then Erika, into her life, both claiming to want to help her. Who can she trust? And when intimidation turns to threats and then violence, who will stand by her side?
The three women characters are all different in background, age and motivation, and are all well drawn. How the three interplayed with each other, as they each sought their own fulfilment, was deftly handled. The secondary characters also played their parts well.
As the story unfolds, the pace and jeopardy ticks up, and you genuinely worry for, especially, Vera. And as the fates of those involved draw to a close, the ending managed to be both dishearteningly realistic and yet strangely satisfying.

Wow this book was so good. Multi layered in racism, corruption (especially of a politician), deceit, lies and more! This is a complex story but with quick, short chapters... It flew by quickly and I loved every part of the mystery.

Two women, Dani and Vera, are at the center of the novel but there are some side characters that are really strong too.

Vera is trying to get the police to find out who murdered her son but it looks like she'll have to take the investigation into her own hands. Dani is a compulsive liar (so much that she doesn't even realize she's lying until the words are out of her mouth) but she agrees to help Vera. The way these two women were bonded was out of tragedy and circumstances being their control. I did like the growth that Dani underwent.

Tangled Lies is the perfect title for this twisty read. I always enjoy a good quest for justice and this one was exceptional. But there was so much more to this book than just the thriller/mystery angles. Vera and Dani, two of the main female characters, really tugged at my heartstrings. Both had so many regrets and I was rooting for them to learn to trust each other as they looked for answers in pursuit of justice. The short chapters, multiple points of view and interesting characters made this a real page turner for me. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading more of this author's work soon.

Reading other Reviews, I am assuming most people wrote their reviews after finishing the book. Well, I strongly feel the book is slow paced and need much more. Maybe Vera and Dani are fortunate to been brought together, but not sure 100%! The story dragged out to get to the important parts of who actually killed Charlie, not what I view as a mystery, but a waste of details. Maybe if the actin was more threatening throughout, then it would have been more interesting. Overall, I am not finding the book interesting. I am reading it for my Book Club. We will not finish our discussion until September 25th as we read so many chapters weekly and discuss on Monday nights via Zoom.

A Nail-biting Murder Mystery with a Political Edge

It took me a while to determine the connection between the multifaceted characters and their role in the story. The narrative becomes a cat-and-mouse diversion, exposing secrets and lies, manipulation, betrayal, deception, resentment, bias, racist behavior, political shenanigans, and abuse of wealth and power. The plot is filled with unforgettable diverse characters, a great representation of the city where the tale takes place, superb dialogue, and dramatic settings. When one of the characters, Dani Gerrity, witnesses an accident that may be connected to a past incident involving Vera Moon, the plot slowly leads to a bombshell ending.

I loved how this book was packed with suspense! I enjoyed the unlikely alliance between Vera and Dani. Vera was such a strong character and I really enjoyed the chapters from her POV. Dani was the total opposite and the chapters told from her POV were unreliable. I love an unreliable character because it keeps me guessing! Tangled Lies was a thrilling, fast-paced read. The whole cast of characters were really well-developed and interesting. I was surprised by the ending because I didn't have anything figured out! Excellent murder mystery!

Average writing, average plot and level of suspense. Good character development of the primary characters. The book is OK escapism. I was offended by the concept of 3 different women pooling their strong points to solve the mystery and overcome the evildoers. What offended me was not so much the women combined, but the presentations of it as unusual. I was also offended by repeated used of the derisory term "copper" for a female officer when all the men were called"officer."

Karen E. Osborne's polished writing and intricate plot kept me hooked from the first chapter of this book, where a brutal murder is revealed. This is a suspense thriller, but one with depth and nuance. I especially loved the character of Vera Moon, an elderly African-American woman who remains proud, elegant, and articulate as she struggles to contain her demons. Her relationship with the young woman Dani--who is also troubled in her own fashion--evolves in interesting and surprising ways. Absorbing and worthwhile.

An empowering story of facing mistakes and the resilience of truth-telling.

Osborne’s Tangled Lies gives readers a group of characters who appear, when first introduced, to have little in common. As the novel unfolds, the lives of Vera, Dani, and Erica entwine as they all search for answers to who killed Vera’s son. Readers will cheer for Vera as she dares to confront and challenge the powerful people who hold answers. An exciting read!
