I thought this story was a shortie like many of the others in this series. # 12 was certainly entertaining; the best parts being the visits by the same characters we got to know from the authors previous books. My favorite ones are We Used to Live Here and The Couple at Table Six. Hurst is a brilliant author for this genre.
I enjoyed this one more than I have the last few instalments of the series. I felt the chapters seemed to have more story to them, rather than a chunk of it spent recapping on the history of the character as I've found in some of the others. Many of the chapter's have endings which left me interested in the future for their character's storyline. In particular the final chapter as it comes back to the outcome of an earlier one in the book, ending on a cliffhanger which leaves you guessing and eagerly waiting on the next instalment in 2 months time. I also found that some of the less interesting characters started to come into their own in this book adding a bit more drama and excitement. There's a lot going on in it and I hope we get to explore a bit more into the lives of some of the newer characters based in Law Vegas, even though we head back to England in the next part of the series.
Just nine hours after the events in "20 Minutes in Las Vegas", we pick up as the sun rises over the Mohave desert and the bright lights of Sin City. But with the rising sun is the rising bodycount of this series. But who will fall victim to Hurst's pen this time?
Jelena watches the sun rise from the balcony of their suite in The Bellagio whilst Bogdan enjoys an early morning helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.
Fireman Curtis and his wife Karen are also on the joyflight which soon takes a horrifying turn.
Black Jack dealer Nancy returns home after her long shift at the casino to the secrets she has buried there but stops short when her house shudders and she sees black smoke on the horizon.
Ethan is only a step away from winning with $10 million in the poker tournament. But can he do it? He knows he has a good hand, but is his opponent bluffing?
Lindsey is at the airport with a throbbing hangover awaiting their flight back home to the UK but where is Diego?
Louise is enjoying having her brother in her life and although they are returning under a bleak circumstances, she squeezes his hand to let him know she's there.
Harry found himself in some mischief getting lost in the maze of underground sewer tunnels the night before but his friends scarpered leaving him lost and scared, until Betty helps him back to daylight.
Jill's new habit of saying yes to everything has landed her in a world of trouble and now she must try and dig her way out.
Tom is hot on the trail of Valentin and Kelly is hot on his tail...but will he manage to learn enough to take back to his boss in the UK?
April is still thinking about the medium from the night before and does a little digging using the name she was given. But is it enough?
There were a few others peppered throughout and only one new face this time given they were all returning from the previous book or beyond - Betty, who helped Harry out of the tunnels.
I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would given it's locale and I am eager for the return to the UK to see how life will pan out in the aftermath of all that took place in this one. As usual, a lot going on but still Hurst manages to keep us entertained and invested in most of the characters' lives as we follow their respective, and interconnected, lives. I devoured this quick read in an afternoon.
This book was a full-on massacre, and I ate it up. Hurst didn’t come to play. He came to kill. Every time I turned a page, I was bracing for impact.
The story kicks off with a helicopter crash and never lets up. Characters I’ve followed for twelve books gone in a flash. Some brutally. Some tragically. Some with absolutely no warning. The plot moves fast and balances small hopeful moments with devastating gut punches. One second you’re rooting for a breakthrough in someone’s recovery, and the next you’re watching a body fall off a rooftop.
By the end, I was speechless. Devastated. But impressed as hell. Especially after the last few books, which I liked, but they had too many filler POVs and too much recapping of things I already knew.
This book, though? This is what happens when a long-running, character-driven series finally cashes in on all the emotional investments it’s been building. And Hurst cashes in.
Bring on 20 Minutes on the Road. I have no clue what that title even means because why are we on the road when there’s so much fallout still burning in Vegas?
Lastly… where is Harry’s mother or any sort of guardian?! This boy has been missing, branded, and somehow just walks back into a hotel room with no one looking for him. No search party. No police. Nothing. Then he lets a grown unhoused woman into his hotel room like it’s nothing. CPS should’ve taken Harry way back in Book 1, to be honest.
Another Daniel Hurst success with this one. Brilliantly written with the tension of different characters building slowly before knowing their fate. Some new people have entered the series and some have now left, though it was unexpected the ones that have left, I wasn't expecting that. Now ready to read the next installment and see which characters have returned and what happens in this next book in the series and looking forward to meeting new ones that will surely be appearing soon. Take a look and read the series so far I've enjoyed every one.
I have read this 20 minutes series from the first book 20 mins on the tube to say it's active would be a understatement. While I have enjoyed every book so far I have not been able to read another book until I finish the series all I can say to those who have not read this book it's a must read to read the series that's been very clearly written I haven't I admit it's certainly a different way to write a series however it's brilliant recommended
WOW what an exciting read 20 Minutes In The Desert book 12 by Daniel Hurst a series of interconnected short stories. Events take place nine hours after 20 Minutes In Las Vegas.
All our familiar and new characters are facing perilous times ahead and the desert can be a hazardous place at the best of times.
I can thoroughly recommend Daniel Hurst's 20 Minute Series as every book holds lots of shocks, surprises and excitement as the stories unfold.
Oh wow! Such a change of pace from the previous book (20 Minutes in Las Vegas). Some very shocking events in this book, and you're kept guessing from the end of chapter 1 right to the end of the book. Daniel broke form and added a final minute for this. Again, it's going to be interesting to see who returns in the next instalment. I do find it a bit hard to believe Harry's chapters from the end of book 11 to book 12 but I guess the author had to make the timeline fit somehow.
Another excellent collection of short stories from the pen of Daniel Hurst. Some events in this anthology take a darker turn than what has gone before and we lose a couple of well-known characters. However, this is still worth reading and I look forward to reading the rest of the series - just as soon as Mr Hurst can write them
The latest (no.12) in the 20 minute series follows all our favourite characters in their adventures in Las Vegas, about 9 hours after book 11 (20 minutes in Las Vegas)
As always with these books, I devoured this in a few days. I find the 20 minute series so easy to read and I enjoy the soap opera style of seeing little snippets of people’s lives and what they get up to. In particular I enjoy it when they overlap which happens a few times in this book! Daniel Hurst has confirmed there will be 20 books in this series and I’m slightly disappointed that I’m now on the countdown to the end!
Will keep this review short and sweet because just really want to get onto the next one in the series, completed in one sitting and got to find out what is going to happen next .
This fabulous series continues in the 12th book - still in The Las Vegas area, 20 people have their lives changed in these 20 minutes - it’s action packed and ends in a cliff hanger - can’t wait to see what happens next
A tantalising finish to this book leaves the reader desperate to read the next book in the series. Death and survival feature in this latest book but which applies to our list of characters - read it to find out.
This one takes place nine hours after the events that took place in Vegas. Each new book gives us a recap of the previous events to refresh our memories. This would be helpful for the people who read the books as they were published, I didn't really need this as I have binge read this series. Some characters get in some precarious situations. Once again, I was rooting for my favourite characters while my heart was in my mouth. I was also sadden by some departures.
The Body Count.... The freaking body count in this one. It wasn't even all murder either. There was manslaughter, accidental, and mass shooting. There were killers just walking around with smiles on their faces. Sin City embraced it's name in this story.
Book 12 of 20. I imagine you are reading along. If you haven't started the series don't read this or any review and start at book 1. This is not a series where the books can be read as stand alones. I mean you could try but you'd be selling yourself short from the experience of the several longer storylines.
Valentin- I literally can't with you. April - She's starting to become interesting to me Mark - I want it all to work out for you Conrad- Shook, like what? Like Jill - I love you so much Carol- Still boring and annoys me. Hoping she'll join a cult or something Bogdan and Jelena- Did I not suggest we put a protective bubble around them for the rest of the series so bad shit would stop happening?? Yet no one listened SMH Curtis- Isn't it ironic??
** I mentioned in my earlier reviews how I was so invested in this series I created character breakdowns in Word right?? Totally normal and not obsessive. Update: I had to nix word and switched to post cards. It's actually fun pulling each character's card and making notes while reading. After the series is done I will do the actual 6 degrees to find out how they are all connected. Again seems a bit cray but no different than if you were doing a murder mystery box. I highly suggest it to enhance your reading experience.
