One of the best, sweetest historical romances ever ! I loved this young heroine Samantha. She was such a sheltered, kind, beautiful, selfless, unspoiled and brave 18 yr old heroine and she has the cutest Maltese puppy named Rascal. She is a romantic who has filled her head with dreams of finding the perfect hero, just like the guys in her romance novels. That cracked me up, because when I first read this as a teenager, I knew exactly how the young heroine felt ! In fact the novel begins with the line:

IN WALKED THE MAN of her dreams. Samantha stared, transfixed, as the vision stepped directly from the pages of her latest Gothic romance into the noisy, smoke-filled tavern. He had arrived … her long-awaited hero.

Samantha. Andrea Kane (Kindle Locations 27-29). Kindle Edition.

This is the H, Remington, the Earl of Gresham:

Samantha falls for the super sexy stud hero at first sight and tells her servant that she is going to become the Countess of Gresham ! She's completely forgotten that her first season has yet to begin; in her mind, she's already found her husband. Remington is equally drawn to her but tries his best to combat his insta-lust because he thinks she's too young, sweet and virginal for him plus he's friends with her big brother Drake (the hero from the first novel in this series). I also identified totally with Samantha's love for her books. When Samantha's carriage wheel is broken and she has to transfer all her belongings to the H's coach, she decides to leave all her clothes behind and takes only the dog and ALL her books. That was so funny. There's this huge stack of books in her carriage and the hero tells her to take only the books she'll be reading. She replies by saying she doesn't know which one she will be in the mood to read later that night so she's taking all ! What a girl after my own heart:

He paused, staring amazedly at the stacks of books piled on the carriage seat.

“What on earth … ?”

“My books.” Sammy scooted past him, holding Rascal against her with one hand and gathering the novels with the other. “I must take them with me.”

“Do you plan to read them all tonight?”

“No, but I don’t know which ones I will read. So I cannot leave any behind. We can forfeit my clothing and other personal items. I’ll make due with whatever Aunt Gertrude has at the Town house. But I must have my books.”

Samantha. Andrea Kane (Kindle Location 158-166). Kindle Edition.

Samantha has been extremely sheltered by her big brother Drake. She's so naive. Sometimes her naivety reminds me of Rose from The Golden Girls. But Samantha is not unintelligent. She even tells the H that he is exactly like the hero of her dreams, from some novel by Mrs. Radcliffe. The H thinks she's crazy and cute at the same time. He knows she has a crush on him but thinks it's just puppy love that will go away when she starts meeting other men at the many balls in London. At first he treats her like an adoring older brother then he starts feeling extremely attracted to her. He decides the best thing to do is to scare her off by letting her know how innocent she is when compared to his rakish ways. When he tells her that, the naive Samantha responds that she will use a certain Viscount to help her gain more experience. She honestly says this without any coyness or flirtatiousness. She truly thinks, in her naive mind, that gaining experience from kissing other men will make her more acceptable to the hero. That's because she's not been raised by a mother and her brother has sheltered her too much. Her innocent and naive comment however, makes the H get really mad with jealousy and he demands that she stay away from all men. It was so entertaining to see how this sweet, artless girl had the big bad naval hero the Earl of Gresham wrapped around her little finger. I loved Remington's jealousy and possessiveness over Samantha even though he tells himself he can't have her. But the intrepid 18 yr old heroine is determined to get her man:

For the endless moments they kissed, all else was forgotten. Resolutions were cast to the wind, unanswered questions were gladly relinquished, the past was laid to rest. And Samantha was his.

“Christ, you intoxicate me,” he muttered. “I can’t let this happen … yet I can’t keep my hands off you.”

“You didn’t initiate this, Remington,” she whispered back, caressing his smooth-shaven jaw, reveling in the joy of being in his arms once more. “I did.”

“That doesn’t excuse my lack of control.” He circled his lips sensuously against hers, making no move to release her.

Samantha. Andrea Kane (Kindle Locations 1779-1784). Kindle Edition.

This is the 18 yr old heroine, Samantha:

This is her puppy Rascal:

The H, Remington Worth, is a former naval commander and a current spy for the Crown. He is trying to uncover the villains involved in a dangerous scheme whereby ships with expensive cargo suddenly go missing or are destroyed. It was a riveting side story line and of course Samantha gets herself caught up in the middle of it because she is so obsessed with the H that she takes to following him and spying on him. She is aided in her task, inadvertently, by having an aunt/chaperone who isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Samantha's spying adventures lead her to a brothel where the H, under his guise as a rake, meets his fellow spies to hold secret meetings. Of course Samantha doesn't know that so she is mad because she thinks he is consorting with whores. She gets herself into trouble and is saved by a young, prostitute. Samantha, being the sweet soul that she is, gets the lady's tragic back story and decides to offer her a job as her maid.

Samantha spends her time alternately trying to seduce the H and driving him crazy. Eventually he gives in because the charms of Samantha are so many that he can't help himself. Remington is a chivalrous hero though. He seduces her, knowing well that he will ask her to marry him. I loved the way he went about planning her first night of seduction. It was so cute. The H cared for her and went out of his way to protect her; he often had to protect her from herself. There were other interesting minor characters in the novel. Smithers, her brother's trusted valet and general dogsbody, was like a substitute father to Samantha and she never treated him like a servant.

It was also cute to see how Remington suffered through all the anger he faced from Samantha's big brother Drake, when he went to ask for her hand in marriage. Drake really loved his sister but was a bit too protective. Towards the end of the story, Samantha even helped to save Remington's life when he's cornered by the villains. She came out like a little warrior, ready to shoot the criminals if she had to, in order to save the hero:

I don't normally like it when heroines are the ones who pursue the heroes, but it was done really well in this novel. Samantha didn't come across as a desperate or pathetic heroine because the H was equally besotted. Her charm and naive innocence saved her from being one of those silly heroines who have no pride and chase after their men. It was also great to see Drake, his wife, their little son and baby daughter. The epilogue was fabulous too. This is a novel that I have read a few times ! Samantha is tied with Elizabeth from Judith McNaught's Almost Heaven for the position of my personal fav heroine in a romance novel. Their personalities are different but both women are equally enchanting.
Andrea Kane has written some really fabulous historical romances and it's weird to me that she's not more popular among romance readers. Maybe it's because her novels were written way back in the '90's and her later works are mystery/forensics novels.

Safety: No cheating. There's a wannabe OM who's also a criminal and a wannabe OW who's a married ex mistress of the H's.

I loved her determination to get her man! She was pretty cute in her pursuit and I liked that it was no major misunderstandings or unnecessary drama. Sometimes she annoyed me when she would put herself in more danger by venturing out on her own but she wasn't a bunny for sure. He was a great hero. I liked how he was honest with her and didn't chase other women after he was with her. There are scenes with former lovers at a ball and at a brothel but he isn't even tempted. There is a secondary romance between a fallen woman and a friend of the hero that was sweet. I install just liked it. Will read her again.

I’m truly on a historical romance roll. I loved this book!

Uber romantic, with a fun and refreshing heroine, a Alpha hero, but very worthy and nice lead.....

Our Earl, Lord Remington was fascinating. It’s been a while since I read about the English Navy, and he truly was a hero. A tortured one and exactly what he needed was someone as open hearted and beautiful as Lady Samantha. She made him believe in love, she was....irresistible.

Samantha was a fun character with the greatest heart! Full of love in her heart from her gothic novels, she was hilarious at times, patient, and a sweetheart. She does a wonderful thing for a supporting character in this, Cynthia that truly touched my heart & encouraged her to feel loved again. -sniff-

I will say, this book has to have one of the most romantic first-times I’ve ever read. Le..Sigh.

I loved this book. This had good suspense with a spy story of missing ships, trips along the dock, Naval stories, the author really sucked me into her world of pirates & war.....fantastic descriptions.

Recommend.

After reading the first two books in the Barrett family saga, I can honestly say that I’m a huge fan of Andrea Kane’s writing, and more importantly, her heroines.

Samantha was a spunky, headstrong young woman who didn’t allow society (or her family) dictate how she lived her life. As one of the characters said, she is a tempest. I absolutely adored her as the main character

Likewise, the brooding hero, Remington, was a notorious rake, but also a highly devoted man who fought for his country at the expense of his reputation. Together, the two main characters pursued each other throughout the story like a passionate dance.

The story was funny, filled with endearing moments, and passionate encounters. I loved every moment of it! The writing was clear, easy to read, and lacked any obvious technical errors.

If you enjoy historical romances filled with colorful characters, you’ll be sure to love this!

I've never heard of this author before so obviously this is my first book of hers. I started this book with skepticism as I just DNF-ed one other first read from an author. I didn't prepare to actually love it. It is a fun book, and left you sighing once every time, wishing a hero like Remington actually exists. I would like to recommend this to fans of sweet love story. But I do wish Samantha is older than she is in the book.

I read the first book, My Heart's Desire featuring Samantha's older brother, Drake and his wife, Alex. This is where I was briefly introduced to Samantha. Yet, in the first book she was just a little girl. I am so glad that she got her own story. She may not have been quite a women but she was all grown up. I loved Samantha's whimsical tales of her Gothic heroines. Especially, when she would dress up and act out as the heroine to save Rem. Honestly, Rem could handle himself but when it came to Samantha he was putty. Yet, always the gentleman (mostly). There was nothing gentlemanly about the passionate kisses that he and Samantha shared many times. I absolutely loved Rem's nickname for Samantha aka Imp. It suited her perfectly. At times Samantha's young age did show but it was refreshing as her innocence is what was entertaining. For example, the time she poured she and Rem glasses of brandy or the time she introduced her maid to Rem. Her maid had come from a brothel of sorts. There is nothing standard about Samantha. She and Rem were eventually matched. Additionally, it was great to see Drake and Alex and there two children for a short period. Although, I enjoyed this book over the first but the first was still great in my books.

If you are going to write a Regency, at least do some historical research. Author was throwing around 200,000 pounds in an age where 10,000 a year, Mr. Darcy, was considered a fortune. Even worse, she had the heroine waltzing at Almack's, at her debut, in an emerald dress, when only white was allowed, and even worse, she was waltzing without one of the patronessess giving her permission! For those who do not read Regencies, these are minor mistakes, but I do, and they are major, and do not even begin to list the authors other errors in the historical period she is writing about. Where is her editor?

At first I was like wait! Is this the Samantha I hoped for? Certainly not! But then Sammy came out in full force. The girl is a delightful menace. I love her go-getter attitude and her guilelessness. Rem is perfect for her, I think. He indulges her and accepts her fully. There were a few unbelievable instances, but otherwise very enjoyable.

Samantha is a thoroughly unexpected character and wild enough to do just about anything. From the start she relentlessly pursued Rem. There were some details that were not historically appropriate, but Kane apparently fudged the rules to aid the plot. Rem was drawn to Sam from the start and had to slowly come to terms with the effect she had on him and his life. The sub-plot throughout the book was Sam wanting to be a heroine like the ones in the books she loves.

5 💫 Minus some historical errors and the fact that the h was a little too sweet/childish in temperament, this was an enjoyable re-read. Better than when I first read it many years ago. No major misunderstandings, separation or drama. And I really love the H. 💕

SAMANTHA
By Andrea Kane

SAMANTHA is the second in the Barrett Family series and tells the story of Drake Barrett's younger sister who we met in MY HEART'S DESIRE. Like that book this publication celebrates the 25th anniversary of SAMANTHA's first release and includes tidbits from the author about writing it all those years ago.

Samantha is now a young woman of 18 and is about to embark on her first London Season. Full of romantic ideals and lots of Gothic novels, Samantha is a young woman with exuberance who knows what she wants-and she wants Remington Worth, the Earl of Gresham. The Earl happens to be an undercover agent on a mission to discover why England's ships are disappearing. When Rem discovers that Samantha knows quite a bit about the shipping business, her brother after all owns Barrett Shipping, Rem becomes much more interested in her. How this interest will develop should be interesting as Samantha's chaperones include an elderly, deaf, and somewhat dotty aunt and her brother's valet who is more of an uncle to her and no stranger to danger and intrigue.

SAMANTHA is a high spirited happy novel. Samantha is steadfast in her faith in her hero and shows a dogged determination to make him hers. However, she has no intention of merely allowing him to be her hero. She must also be his heroine and will do whatever it takes to save him as well. It's this balance of equality that makes me appreciate this novel even more. Samantha is not some simpering miss in need of a husband and protector. She is a woman with a good mind who is looking for a partner to love and share her live. Indeed, Samantha will save Rem just as he saves her.

I enjoyed seeing Drake and Alex years after their story ended; how they've changed and evolved, as well as remained the same, witnessing their relationship with each other as well as with Samantha, Rem, and Smitty. Real characters reside in this novel, and Kane is not afraid to show some of the gritty realism of the time, the character of Cynthia, in particular emphasizes the dark side of Regency England.

SAMANTHA is a fun romantic read with plenty of adventure as well as humor that had me quickly turning its pages to devour the story.

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

I can go on and on and on about how much I love this book but if I do, we'll both be here for days! No one want’s that so I’ll keep my gushing to a bare minimum.

This is my all-time favorite from Andrea Kane, coming in right before The Last Duke, Emerald Garden, The Gold Coin and The Black Diamond...also all her other magnificent pieces in this Genre!
Samantha Barrett is such a loving breath of fresh air. She was so lively and headstrong. As much as she loved and respected both her Hero Remington and her brother Drake, she allowed neither one nor the ton to demand or dictate her life. As expected in an Andrea Kane Novel, she is just was the Heroine should be.

Then there is Remington Worth. I cannot tell you just how much I adored the domineering, romantic, brooding hero that he is. He is everything you could want him to be. He’s charming and sweet, a dimpled notorious rake, loyal to the Crown. Rem, is a big bad navy hero….wound around the finger of an intrepid, romantic 18 year old girl.

A girl who is determined to steal away the heart of her chivalrous hero despite his dispassionate if good intentioned resistance and long line of those who stand in opposition.

Theirs’s is a fun loving and heartwarming tale of passion and charm. They dance of the page, each moment the perfect mixture of endearing romantic devotion.

Absolutely of the best historical romances out there!

Caveat: My genre of choice, for as long as I can remember was Mystery/Suspense and General/Current Literature. Never Historical Romance. But there was something that piqued my curiosity, after reading the synopsis, of this book. I was also intrigued, since I had recently read another book by this author, a Psychological Thriller titled THE MURDER THAT NEVER WAS, which I really enjoyed.

This is the 2nd in a series but read as a stand alone.

Samantha, having become a woman, is looking forward to being introduced at the first season of aristocratic balls. And being a romantic, hoping to meet her "hero". The moment she saw Lord Remington Worth, she knew that they would wed, except that notion was the furthest thing from his mind. She didn't know that he held many demons that he fought. But her personality, warmth, determination and love would eventually make him see what is truly important, and that is love.

I absolutely loved this book! The plot is fluid. The characters likeable. From Ms. Kane's storytelling, I felt that I was transported back in time. A well crafted Historical Romance with plenty of suspense.

Ms. Kane has written a total of 14 Historical novels and I plan on reading all of them!! Kudos Ms. Kane, you succeeded in convincing me that this genre will be added to my favorites!

A Little Different Regency

When Samantha Barrett meets Remington Worth in a tavern in the bad part of town, she insists she has met her hero. He is not so sure!

A young lady, in town for her first season, who is honest, forthright and believes the best of people meets a womanizing, former Navy Captain and man on the town. But he is not what people think he is! Yes, he is a womanizer, but he is also an agent for the admiralty who solves mysteries related to ships and shipping.

And he has to explain all of this to his friend, Samantha's older brother and guardian!

The story focused more on the mystery and Samantha's efforts to help both her brother and her man with issues related to the current mystery Remington is working on solving.

An entertaining read! Aunt Gertrude is very funny!

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Samantha is all grown up! This is a girl who knows what she wants. She's blunt, honest, and wears her emotions for the world to see. You always know where she stands on anything, because she'll tell you. Remington was the opposite. Together they are a hoot. Their story was a fun one, with some danger and drama thrown in to keep things even more interesting.

Samantha by Andrea Kane was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

No one does reformed rake and guileless heroine better than Andrea Kane. The follow up to My Heart's Desire, Andrea Kane delivers Sammy's long-awaited happy ending in an exciting tale of passion and intrigue set against the backdrop of the 19th century shipping industry. And, I suspect any woman who grew up reading romance novels voraciously and dreaming of happily-ever-after will see a glimpse of herself in Sammy. A fantsatic read - I highly recommend!
