Ablaze is what I feel every time Micah so much as looks my way, because he is dark, otherworldly, and alluring. Irresistible is the pull between us–taut, yet unbreakable–and it binds us to one another despite our efforts to deny its presence.
Black and blue is the color of my skin because my mother doesn’t keep her hands to herself. Shattered is the state of my heart because she is all that I have left, and she doesn’t love me.
No control is what I have, because in all things I am powerless. It seems I'm to be forever at the mercy of others.
This is my story, and it's one of violence and darkness, but it's also one of love and light.
Darkly Divine is a standalone, slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, high school romance. It is intended for mature readers due to adult content and violence. This is NOT a dark romance.
C.L. Walker is an author of paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary romance. She lives in the United States with her family and spends her time writing, reading, and watching dramas.
I don't think I've read a Vampire romance book like this before. Yes there are dark themes covered in this book. Abuse, rape.....some of which are hard to read but at the heart of this book it's about love. Skylar & Micah have a love/hate relationship. One which Micah takes great pleasure in getting under Skylar skin with cutting remarks and quick witted comments. All of which Skylar gives as good as she gets with. I actually liked both of those characters. Their relationship together was sweet and caring. Their story was a good read
I do not think I have read this author before. This was an interesting story with a heartbreaking and beautiful love story. I enjoyed it and the story itself was really good. I would recommend this story to anyone who wanted a good story to read. I will be looking out for more from this author in the future.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I wouldn't classify this as a dark romance at all. I misread, strike that does part. It was a bit sad, a bit troubling at times but it was mostly flirty mushy . I liked the paranormal take of this one. The vampire-ish take was original and interesting.
I loved this book so much the pain sky went through and how micah was always there for here and help push her when she needed it I want so much more of their story ended to soon for me can't wait to see what she writes next
Ok, before I review this, let’s get one thing out of the way. I’m on this author’s mailing list and she has said this is NOT dark romance. Just because the word “darkly” is used does NOT mean it’s dark romance. There are some dark themes like the abuse Skylar takes from her mother & Jack but again NOT dark romance.
I thought this book had real potential and I love enemies to lovers especially with one of the main characters being a vampire. How original! However, the transition from enemies to lovers didn’t quite work for me. Even at 70%, they had barely kissed and it was just a bit slow for me. Once Skylar learns about the vampirism, I wish Micah could have let her in more or that it would pick up from there but instead it dragged for me.
The writing was really good though, only a few errors and I’m interested in what else this author puts out. I just think this one needed to be tweaked a little bit to fully hit the deliciousness that is enemies to lovers. It fell just a bit short for me.
STORY: I was conflicted with my rating for this book. Being conflicted does not mean I did not like the book, because I really enjoyed the premise of the story with the paranormal vampire aspect of it.
Sky has a terrible childhood which still persists into her teens. Her home life with her mother is not the best, leaving her to feel alone with not talking to anyone about it. She met this boy years ago and never saw him again after that particular day. Years later, he is back with an alluring dark presence.
So the moment the story started, it caught my interest. High school vibe, girl who is nice and friendly with everyone but pretends all is ok at home and the mysterious new guy at school. The conflict, for me, was the back and forth between Skylar and Micah. They disliked each other, and that was good to read. With Micah, there is a particular reason he is pushing Sky’s button to get her upset. However, their constant push and pull was exciting at first but started to wear me down. It felt like I was on repeat. Same attitude, different scene. By chapter thirteen, I got a little excited as you saw Micah in beast mode. I definitely thought after that incident the dynamics of their relationship would change a bit, but they went back to disliking each other.
With that being said, I liked how unique Micah was. His persona and the way he was described to me reminds me of that movie Lost Boys which was also a vampire movie. The powers used on Sky was interesting, and I love that he was able to do certain things to gain insight. He was conflicted in his emotions for Sky with the I want her but I don’t like how she affects me. Sky was sweet. She, too, was also conflicted in her feelings for Micah, I want you, but I don’t want you. I also thought her reaction to what he was went a little too well. Not At that moment of finding out, but after. I like the way Micah was there for Sky eventually when it came to her home life. Again, with things that were ok for me, there were also things that I love about this book.
SEXUAL CHEMISTRY: I thought the sex was ok. When they finally came together emotionally, I really wanted more physically. In those moments, those scenes could be longer.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS: I liked Sky’s best friend Sai and the turmoil Devin cause when thrown in. I wouldn’t say anyone else stood out, however, this would have been a good series if made into one. More teen hot & sexy vamps with the human girls.
OVERALL: Enjoyed the plot, like the story, but sometimes my enjoyment went up and down. I would still definitely read this author again. As she continues to grow, I can only imagine what will be produced.
TRIGGERS: Sky’s home life with abusive mother.
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
The plot of this book is original and such a departure from the standard high school vampire romance, that I was super pumped to read it…..however by half-way, I was skimming across pages trying to advance the story enough to keep my interest.
The whole sub-plot about the mom’s anger just didn’t seem to click, I never got the true sense of why she would do that to her daughter - allegedly bc she was supposedly so angry about the loss of her husband and son. There’s a disconnect there that makes it hard to get truly invested in the backstory and why the mh’s life is so awful. I can’t put my finger on what it is, but it’s very disjointed and makes the book seem choppy.
The relationship bwtn the MH & mh also seems very superficial despite endless chapters about how they feel about one another. Again, great plot, just really superficial and I never really became invested in their relationship, or anything else in the book really. Reminds me of the superficial friendships Bella Swann has with the human kids at her high school in the Twilight books. You want to feel the emotion and connection bwtn characters but just can’t bc it’s just not there. No chemistry!
Overall great plot and love the Native American cultural influences, hence the 3 stars. If not for the plot and cultural aspects, this book would be 1.5-2 stars unfortunately.
Would only recommend if you’re looking for a non-standard book that is a quick read & has little Emotional investment.
Good Start, Iffy Relationship, Flat Ending (spoilers)
I won’t lie, the way the author introduced the supernatural elements of this book felt incredibly fun and realistic. What 18 year old immortal hotshot wouldn’t describe themselves the way Micah did? It felt weirdly normal, as did Skylar’s exasperation with herself and the subtle 4th wall breaks. Those things got me into this book, but unfortunately, by the end I was really ready to be done.
The plot really fell flat after a while, and Micah’s controlling and dismissive attitude towards the things she said versus the things she thought is the beginning of an unhealthy relationship, not a healthy one. He also consistently refrained from telling her incredibly important information over and over again, even when her LITERAL LIFE was at stake. And she was ALWAYS fine with it. I mean, they have sex while she’s half dead and SCARED, permanently sealing her life to his, and even afterwards he didn’t want to tell her about it. But she didn’t care! She never stopped being a doormat and her relentless positivity towards Micah no matter what was more obsessive than loving. On top of that, there’s no substantial world building around the supernaturals or even the town it’s set in. We know there’s a high school, tavern, coffee shop, a trailer park and one neighborhood - but was there even a town name?
Overall, a predictable plot with some enjoyable moments, but it housed an dysfunctional relationship, minimal world-building, and an unsatisfying ending.
Okay to start out, I RARELY write reviews. Terrible, I know. But I just knew I had to for this book. I’m not usually a vampire romance reader— the fated mate trope shifters offer typically fill my KU library instead. I wanted to switch it up and stumbled across You First from this author & then, enjoying that, just clicked on the next book this author had published under KU.
NO. REGRETS. I pulled an all nighter to finish this book (and I have a baby so you know precious sleep is!) The characters? Chef’s. Kiss. C.L. Just makes characters that are so naturally likable and easily weaves a web of interesting dynamics between each character. Oh and the chemistry??? HOT HOT HOT!! Micah?? Bark bark. Such a good balance between not being overly *explicit* but not leaving me hanging because I cannot stand when the tension builds to nothing.
Don’t fret; the tension totally builds a cozy little bonfire (hellfire?) you’ll enjoy. The MCs story makes your heart just squeeze when you KNOW what’s coming (fate always finds a way!) That kind of writing is absolute talent. I was an English major, so I’ve studied this — I wish I could naturally write like that!!!
Thank you, C.L. For giving me a perfect fated (blood) mate book to pull me out of my reading slump. You’ve made this Susan Bliler stan believe in vampire love. I will be telling all of my spooky romance book friends about this!!
Quite a dark supernatural story about teenager Sky who has been abused most of her life by her drunk Mother. Then she meets Micah who she crushes on BIG time. But he not only grinds her gears (in a bad way) but he’s also someone who ‘sees’ her. Micah is not all he seems and as he & Sky get closer things start to spiral out of control for the pair of them. I found some aspects of the storytelling a bit irritating, esp the way Micah & Sky were with each other to start with. As a reader it was driving me mad! I thought the story seemed to take an age to get going and then it felt rushed. Oh, and I think the term ‘asshole’ was overused. But it kept my attention and I did enjoy it, I just felt it perhaps could have been even better than it was.
CL Walker hit it out of the park with this YA vampire romance. It was well written, had great characters, a pretty entertaining story, some triggering moments, and the due to poor editing is the only reason I am not giving it four and half stars. Thank you for keeping me entertained all day!!! I didn't put this book down.
I took a shot on this book. And I'm glad i did. It takes a bit too get into. And the first half is slow burn yet it makes you want to tear your hair out. But keep reading. It gets better. I was pleasantly suprised in the Native American MC. He was an awesome character and i fell in love with him.
Barely made it to the end. Typos, baffling dialog, incomprehensible supernatural. Yes, these are high school students, but it's just endless angry, annoyed, incongruous lust, pissed off again. And is anyone getting schoolwork done? How do you afford an apartment and car as a part time coffee booth attendant in a tiny town?
This book was very well written! I hated the mom that couldn't give her daughter the love that she needed! But on the flip side I loved that she was loved! I loved this book!!
