This series keeps me on the edge of my seat. There is something on a ship, responsible for the horrific killing of the crew . Can Simon and Brockman discover the truth before they succumb to the whispers on that ship? How does it change their partnership? And who is Anna? Can she be trusted? So many questions. I'll soon be reading book #4 in series.
Finally catched up with the series and this one was a surprise. Instead of the usual spy meets horror structure of the first two books, Leyendecker sets the book in a claustrophobic setting of a ghost ship in the northern sea. It is effectively creepy and the characters fit surprisingly well into this unusual setting. The two main characters are now having a female crew member called Anna and she is a wonderful competent yet untrustworthy element. Also I felt I prefer the urban setting of the first two books the characters are spectacular once again and the finale is a MasterClass in suspense. Can‘t wait to see the next entries and I just wish the wait would not be that long …
The third of the Nocturne Society novels is a bit of a different beast. Just when you thought you had it all figured out the author changes the game. Instead of two monster hunters we know from the previous novels, we now have a third female one in the form of Anna join them. Instead of urban horror, we have an isolated location in form of a ghost ship in the Northern Sea.
The horror works excellent once again, but I missed the spy novel elements here. Which is why this one gets only four stars. A competent, paranoid and thrilling horror novel, but I felt it did not fully deliver on the brand the Nocturne Society is for me.
Too "talky" Much of the plot was spent on discussing the relationships between the protagonists. Plot was slow moving with all of the standard creepy noises, dismembered bodies, and mysterious survivors. I gave up 3/4 through. Would not recommend this book and I probably will not read anymore books by this author.
