Shy throws down against rocking British superhero Stardust, but she’s definitely not having a teenage daydream - her entire career is on the line! As Shy fires herself up, we say hello to a nurse, and it wouldn’t be an action series if the bad guys didn’t have a dumb group name.

I like Shy, the character, a whole lot, probably more than Shy, the series, because it’s really easy to paper over the ‘been there, done that’ feel of another super hero series if you just focus on Teru (Shy’s alter ego) trying to be the best she possibly can.

We open up with some frosty beatings from Stardust, whose idea of helping is to threaten Shy’s unknown powers into flaring up by pounding several shades of stuffing out out heroine. Will she come through right at the end? What are the odds?

It’s a fairly fun fight - Stardust has a pretty clever power and he’s an utter bastard who knows he’s an utter bastard, even if he talks a bigger game than the reality, of course. I wouldn’t call the action amazing, but it gets the job done.

After this clash, Teru spends some time with the ridiculously tsundere Lady Black, who really, really loves the word ‘dummy’. She’s kind of a lot, but she sure has a reason behind the massive amount of chips she can balance on her shoulders.

Lady Black also understands the value of a magical girl intro speech, so much respect to her for that, at least. And I like how she uses her tsundere to push herself to even greater heights.

She and Teru have a fun little adventure that quickly crams in a reason why these people can all speak to one another that I don’t quite recall from the first volume. Sadly we’ll have to wait for the anime to see if Stardust talks in Japanese with a British accent.

The two girls make for another fun pairing though - watching Shy make friends has been a high point of all this and probably relevant. It definitely seems like there’s more to her newly revealed power than the most obvious explanation.

We pause quickly for a brief Shy solo adventure where she’s forced into cosplay while technically cosplaying. It’s quite the thing, but once more we are blessed with fun costuming and precious little fan service. It’s just an excuse for Shy to be, well, Shy, and then come through when it really counts.

And that’s what’s great about Shy. She’s trying, even if her anxiety is visibly eating her alive. She may not want the attention, but she sure wants to do the right thing and, as the story posits, sometimes that’s all it takes.

(Okay, the superpowers help, but I think we’re supposed to overlook that.)

The last portion brings back the nefarious Stigma and has a throw-down set at, of all places, the North Pole. It’s your basic shonen fight scene that will probably be more interesting animated and also has no clear-cut winner because it’s too early in the story.

I think part of my problem is that, well, Stigma is more annoying than threatening, for one. He was more interesting in the first volume causing small scale problems that felt a little more magical girl than My Heroine Academia and the balance shifts firmly to the latter here.

It’s an okay fight, if you like that sort of thing, but nothing you haven’t seen before if you’ve read a smattering of manga. And, come on, that speech about names is so annoying. You can’t be evil and bloviating and then call one of your associates freakin’ Weepy.

So, fun, but definitely looking like we’ll end up with the usual shonen bloat as we move forward. That’s not terrible, I think I just liked the smaller scale a bit more. And, as I said, Shy herself is so easy to cheer on that her presence makes things better.

3.5 stars - same as before, but no book that tries to deliver the name ‘Weepy’ with any sort of sinister connotation is getting me to round up, no matter how good the lead is.

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2021/...

Extrait :

Burning Passion

With the famous (or perhaps infamous) hero Stardust facing Shy in a battle to determine her determination and powers it is time for her to go all out or be kicked out of the super hero scene. There no real surprise by the off sided battle between as the kind Shy faces off against the far more ruthless Stardust but obviously she makes the minimum challenge though at the cost of pain for sure (other wise it would be a fairly short series. Interestingly enough this fight also gives us a chance to glimpse into the past of Stardust as a child breaking the tension of the (mostly) one sided fight part way through as as Shy plays to her own strengths.

While in recovery we get to meet the hero Lady Black who plays a bit of a role later on when she follows up on Shy's care leading to a little about her past with a call out to the mangaka Bukimi Miki for a differently abled hero into the mix. Lady Black may be a little hard on people (her favorite word seems to be dummy) but her heart is as wide as the ocean making her a good match for the spirited Shy whenever they get together.

Throw in some smaller hero moments like Shy trying to understand her powers better and how a magical girl can play the part of a magical in real life then it is off to the North Pole to investigate some incident at an expedition site. Shy and Spirit meet China's hero, Mian Long before moving out but when they find the source of the trouble Stigma is not far behind as the heroes get a very cold reception. However their opponent seems to know of Spirit's past and it looks like we will get to see even more of it in the next volume. :)

I love My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 and all superhero comics in general but when I read the first volume, nothing really popped for me. It was just so much exposition and the thing is that works sometimes but it felt like I was constanrly being hit by it instead of showing me why I should care about the charcter.

But I was on holiday and had some free points to get a book so I ended up picking up the second volume and wow! Seriously it went from a 1 to a 10, it was that good! I was blown away! You gave our hero a test to see if she's got, enough metal to see if she's ready to be a hero in this world and it was tough and very brutal but she pulls through. You really root for her because the guy she's up against is ruthless and what I adored about it was whilst fighting, they well talking about their beliefs on life so not only was it a physical battle but one of psyche as well. Even when it kept going after the fight had wrapped there was just so much intriguing things happening and the thing is they weren't big things they're very small and that just won me over.

Heroe aleman, Doktor Schwarz. Muchas chicas lindas

Between impressing a "heartless" hero like Stardust in a fight, getting to know the belligerent nurse-themed hero Lady Black, discovering her flame powers, entertaining kids at a hero stage show and resolving a conflict in the Arctic, Shy has her work cut out for her in this volume. So much is going on and it's an utter delight to see Teru deal with it. Her learning more about other heroes like Stardust and, especially, Lady Black is a highlight of the volume and the bit with her hosting a hero stage show is sweet. Combined with the appealing art, this series is a winner!

loved this second part; Stigma is becoming more interesting and at this point feels more like an anti-hero than an antagonist. I have no idea what’s gonna happen in the next volumes but I’m curious to try.

Voto 6.8/10
