Lyric I fell in love with him when we were kids. He promised me forever when we were teenagers. Months later he leaves me without a care in the world. One week during senior year was all it took for Colt Street to decide I was no longer what he wanted. Then, just like his brother, Colt took off for the military, leaving the life we longed for, behind. Eight years later he’s back, and now everything has changed. We’re both not who we once were... and I don’t know if we ever will be.
Colt Running into Lyric Taylor again brought back the reality of the situation I put us in all those years ago. I left when my world came crashing down. Instead of letting her know what was going on, I chose to run, and leave her behind. This time I won’t make the same mistake. She’s guarded. I’m broken. Now danger is waiting to tear us apart, and I’m ready to put my life on the line. Whether she accepts it or not, I will always be her warrior.
This is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed Lyric and Colt’s story. Their story was emotional, full of secrets and lies. Thinking you are doing right by the person you love only to realize you were wrong. Being best friends in the beginning makes everything easier until that moment when your life is turned upside down by one person's decision that changes all that you knew. These two were inseparable and so in love and when Colt changed his mind on his future he literally broke Lyric with his actions leading up to it and after, he left her, sad and hurt that she took that feeling and tried to turn her life around. Colt has had a hard life with so much loss in his life that after what he did to Lyric, he can’t move past his love for her. As fate would have it, these two are pushed together years later and the feelings are still there, but will Colt get the chance to explain his action and make it right between them? No spoilers here, you will be sucked in, I read this book in one sitting and recommend it. You will want to smack Colt upside his head for a few what the heck moments, but the twist that brings these two together if you are paying attention will know where this author is going and if not, you won’t see it coming. Great read, I found this book on Netgalley.
4.5 stars My first book by this author, but not the last. I requested this book because I love the author who created this world. Little did I realize the styles are also similar in the way your heart gets torn apart.
Colt and Lyric grow up across the street from one another as children, become best friends, and more. Her life is turned upside down when he decides to leave, regardless of their future plans. Later their paths do cross again. Will Colt explain why he left? Can Lyric trust him? Are they in a better place this time? I was drawn into the story quickly and read it in an afternoon. Expect emotions, a twist or two, and a great read.
Set in Corinne Micheals Salvation Society World.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the advanced copy: this is my voluntary review.
First, I adored Lyric. She’s not weak, or downtrodden, or begging to fall back into anything with the guy who destroyed her so many years ago. Oh, no. She’s a strong woman and she’s not about to let Colt know that he still gets to her. And oh, do I love her for that. I was afraid that we’d be dealing with a doormat, but she proved me wrong so quickly and so wonderfully that I couldn’t help but love her.
As for Colt, he was a moron. A well-meaning one, but a moron. He seemingly did the unforgivable to make Lyric give up on him after making her alter her plans and dreams to fit his. But he definitely felt the sting of that dumbness for years and years. So when he’s face to face with the only woman he’s ever loved, he’s not letting go. He’s not walking away. He’s not doing anything except winning Lyric back, by any means necessary.
This was an excellent story and flowed so well that I was stunned to find myself halfway through after what felt like a blink. The buildup, the misery, the way my stomach dropped when Lyric’s heart broke, the reconciliation. All of it. Add in a dash of danger and I didn’t put this book down until I hit the words “The End”. And now I’m hoping for more from this author because this book gripped me and didn’t let go!
Colt and Lyric are 10 years old when they first meet. They become best friends.
When they’re 16 years old they go on their first date. It’s love for both of them and they become inseparable. They plan their future together and everything is great
They’re 18 years old when he breaks her heart. Breaks her heart and leaves her.
This is a dual POV book which works so well. It’s hard to hate someone when you get to see things from their side. Yes Colt made mistakes but he’d also suffered so much. And I really, really wanted these two to work out.
And that’s all your getting I’m not going to spoil this book for you. But in my opinion it’s well worth a read.
It’s the first book I’ve read from this author but it won’t be the last.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley.
I am such a sucker for a second chance romance, and on top of that a best friends to lovers romance?! SIGN ME UP!!
So Lyric and Colt met when tragedy struck Colt's family, and they have been inseparable ever since. To top it off, they are also neighbors, so you will very likely always find one with the other. Their relationship was full of steam, butterflies, first love highs and lows, and I just loved it! You could feel both of their heartbreaks and their yearning that things could be different, and when Colt finally comes back in hopes of winning Lyric's heart all over again, I just couldn't read fast enough. I loved how Colt made sure Lyric knew how much he loved her, how much he never stopped loving her, even though he was the reason for their broken hearts. I had a huge smile on my face by the time they finally reunited and that didn't stop until the very end!
Just be prepared for some tissues. Especially in the beginning!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
Brooks, you have done it again!! I absolutely loved Lyric & Colt’s story. Wonderful young teen love, second chance romance stand-alone. From the first 2 chapters I was put on an emotional roller coaster. Growing up in a military/first responders home, I could immediately relate to Colt. He meets Lyric at a tragic time in his life, and they instantly form a friendship that later turns into more. Family issues have him joining the military, leaving behind a heartbroken Lyric. Eight years later, fate puts them back in each other’s path. Only this time, Colt is determined to not let her go again.
Lyric and Colt's story, they meet on one of the worst days of Colts young existence, they soon become childhood besties and then sweethearts and they're loves young dream....until Colt ups and leaves! Needless to say, Lyric is devastated! This is their story of carrying on without the one who you made plans with, of becoming better and stronger people, and then of course coming face-to-face and soon realising that true feelings never disappear! Can he explain to her what really happened?... Will she understand?.. Can she forgive?...
Well your going to have to read to find out!
A good read, well written, likable (mostly 😉) characters, and emotional. Would recommend.
*I voluntarily received an arc from the author and this is my honest review.
4* Colt was close to his brother Alex despite the 10 year age gap. When Alex is killed in action everything in his life changes & not for the better. Lyric is the new neighbour and begins a friendship with Alex and his best friend Zane. The two become a couple and plan their future but Alex makes some unexpected choices that don't include Lyric. Years later they are tasked to work together to solve a case, he realises the mistakes he made but can he get her to forgive him?
I suggest reading the Salvation Series by Corinne Michaels before reading books in the Society, but it is not a requirement.
Key Points for this story in the Salvation Society Collection: - Romantic Suspense / Contemporary - Army Special Forces Soldier - 9/11 Discussion - Childhood Friends to Lovers - CW: Abuse, Death, Family Issues, and Grief - Salvation Series connection is Mark and Brody

Warrior is such a heart grasping book. AM Brooks knows how to perfectly break my heart and then put it back together. Warrior brings out so much emotion just within the first few chapters, your instantly hooked.
I was blown away by the simple words that I thought would never be what made me feel moved but all of this book completely compelled me. The style of this writing was deeply thought out. You get so much from these characters. You get to see their pain, their happiness, just all around way of life. Lyric is such a sweetheart! She is nice and caring and know just when someone needs another person. Colt, he has had a difficult life. A lot of heartache has struck him at such an early age that you can’t help but feel for him but also wish he thought differently. Their feeling for each other and the love is such a strong bond that I could definitely feel it in my heart. I also love reading the military side of this and how some people put others before themselves. They are true warriors!
This was definitely a wonderful book to read, even through all the tears, laughs, and smiles. I highly recommend reading this. I know I will continue reading AM Brooks and all of her fantastic work!
"𝒜𝓃𝑜𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝓅𝒾𝑒𝒸𝑒 𝑜𝒻 𝓂𝓎 𝒽𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝓁𝑒𝒶𝓋𝑒𝓈 𝓂𝓎 𝒸𝒽𝑒𝓈𝓉 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝑒𝓂𝒷𝑒𝒹𝓈 𝒾𝓉𝓈𝑒𝓁𝒻 𝒾𝓃 𝒽𝒾𝓈. 𝑀𝑜𝓁𝒹𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓂 𝓉𝑜𝑔𝑒𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇.." This is the second book I have read for A M Brooks and I can officially say that I love her writings. Warrior is a fast faced, second chance and romantic suspense story. The love between the main characters is so sweet and I admired the description of how their love developed as they grew older. The battle that Colt went through in his teenage years isn't so far from reality for a lot of teens get conflicted about their life, future etc. and what made me console with him is his family's background and I really cried when he faced the tragedy that was the turning point in his life. Ps ( if you read the story, I am sure you will know what part I am talking about:) However, my heart broke for Lyric and I felt sympathy with her for how cruel fate was with her, but admired how supportive she always was for her childhood love. Furthermore, Warrior is full of suspenseful , warming and shocking events that made reading it interesting. Finally, I enjoyed reading this story it realistic, fun and easy to read! And definitely recommend that y'all add it to your TBR.
Loved this second chance, friends to lovers romance. I’m usually not a huge fan of reading about when the main characters were real young but this one was written so well and we got to see how these two met and their friendship that grew into a deep love. We also had to experience their heartbreak, which hurt me almost as much as it did them. I’ll admit I was really ticked off at Colt and the way he handled things with Lyric. I almost closed the book and didn’t finish reading. But I had hope that things weren’t what they seemed.
I’m so glad I finished reading this and was able to see these two find their way back to each other. Colt thought he was doing what was best for Lyric and everyone by leaving. But sometimes leaving doesn’t really take you away from the heartache you left behind. While I do feel that Lyric let him back in too quickly, I was still happy that they worked it all out.
This book will for sure get you in the feels. I loved Lyric she is a beautiful little girl who turned into an amazingly strong woman. Colt has been through so much in his life and these two falls in love before they really knew what love was. But when Colt changes their destiny it's Lyric who loses hers. Now years later they are face-to-face and Lyric will not allow Colt to try and tame her. Colt never thought he would see her again. The love of his life that he knows he destroyed. When things start happening it will bring them closer together. However, sometimes the past can't be let go and these two will have to decide if love is more important than the hurt it has brought them. I will say this about this story I couldn't put it down and I fell in love with everyone in this book.
I am a sucker for second chances and that's exactly what we get here with Colt and Lyric. He left her heartbroken but he wasn't far behind. Years later and he tries to make amends for the pain they were both left in. The story is emotional but sweet and with the right amount of steam. I was sucked into their story and then was left with a big smile on my face.
What a great story! Lyric and Colt were best friends first and then each other everything, so when Colt leaves she is devastated. Now years later he is back and he realises his mistakes and that his feelings are still as strong as ever. I really felt for these two and I was rooting for them.
This is an easy, enjoyable read. The story had a realistic equality to it and could be just about anyone's reality. Twelve year old Colt's eyes meet blue eyed Lyric's, the girl across the street, on the day that devastating news changed his life. Colt and Lyric became the closest of friends until they were sixteen when they started dating and became inseparable. Senior year Colt receives a college football scholarship and convinces Lyric to attend the same college. Spring Break when Colt goes to check the college out, feeling in adequate and unworthy he makes a split second decision that will have consequences for both him and Lyric. This book has some twists that weren't anticipated which gave it that extra punch.
This book pleasantly surprised me. At first I found myself turning the pages because it was well written, but wasn't blowing my socks off, boy did that change in the second half, I hope we see those characters again, as the plot got so intense that I wanted more. I get why the start was slowish but this self proclaimed suspense junkie needed more pages in the book. Definitely a great addition to this multi author world, and a great example of those new to this author to find out how addicting this author can become without you realizing.
I like the premise a lot, but there are times when other books are just too long or it expands to several year jumps. I liked that this story didn't drag out and it's pretty fast-paced and easy to read. I'm not disappointed. I really enjoyed Colt and Lyric's story. This is a good, well-written read.
I really enjoy reading this authors books. I'm never disappointed. I really enjoyed Colt and Lyrics story. From teenage love to broken hearts. Years later when they are forced to work together they find themselves having to trust the other to stay alive. Definitely love second chance romance. Really enjoyed this story.
As always.... I loved it! A.M. Brooks always gives me the feels. I cried for Lyric and cursed Colt. But you know I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the angst this author brings in all her books! I’m a fan for life!
Warrior, part of The Salvation Society series, was about 26-year-old Colt Street, a former army sergeant-turned-Cole Security Forces employee, and 26-year-old Dr. Lyric Taylor, the owner of Bluebird Behavioral Testing "BBT", a clinic that worked with the government in deducing the behavior of potential employees.
I decided to condense Colt's and Lyric's childhood, which took up the first nine chapters of the book. Otherwise, this review would be longer than the unending stories some authors like to write. I had to include Zane in the review as well because he played such a significant role throughout their lives.
At age 7, Colt and his BFF Zane, both first graders, watched as the 9/11 attacks flashed across the television screens. Colt's brother Alex, who was 18, decided to join the Marines and fight for his country, just as their father before him had. To Colt, his big brother had become not only a soldier but a hero. A Warrior. Three years later, Lyric's family moved to Colt's neighborhood. On the same day she moved in, Colt's family was told his brother had been KIA. It was also when he and Lyric bonded for the first time, even though they'd never spoken a word to each other. The mere fact that she shed tears over learning he'd lost his brother was enough to seal their connection. It wasn't until 5 to 6 weeks later that they finally met, and that was after Alex's funeral service.
Six years later, Lyric and Colt started dating at 16. A year later, Lyric met Colt at their special place, where he surprised her with an anniversary "gift". He had carved their initials into the tree where they had first met. That night they agreed to go to the same college after graduation. It was also the night they both lost their V-card to each other. Things changed when they were 18, seniors, and two months from graduating. Colt and Zane spent spring break visiting the college football team he planned to play on to see if it "was a good fit". When he returned, Colt started lying to Lyric. Zane began avoiding her too, so she knew something was wrong. The day before graduation, Lyric caught him in a flat-out lie which caused her to think Colt was cheating on her. Having been unsuccessful in her attempts to contact him, Colt finally reached out with a message that said they would talk after the graduation ceremony. Several families gathered to celebrate the new graduates, so Colt took Lyric aside to tell her he had enlisted instead of going to college with her and that he and Zane were leaving in two days. He left the party soon after. When she and Colt met later, she asked what was to become of their relationship. The only thing he agreed to was writing to each other. Ten weeks after he left, Lyric knew he was backing off and pushing her away.
The night before she was to leave for college, Lyric ran into Zane, who was home on leave. When he tried to apologize for not telling her, and for not making Colt tell her, he stuck his foot in his mouth by letting her know that Colt was also in town...and hadn't told her. Colt ended up being at the going-away party she had planned to attend. But instead of being there to see her, he was with another girl. When he saw her, it was then that he told her they were over. After leaving the party, she returned the next morning to confront him one last time. Except, this time, she found him coming out of a bedroom dressed only in boxers...and the girl from the night before coming out of the same bedroom wearing nothing but the shirt Colt had been wearing the night before. She knew then it was over.
Over the next 8 years, Colt hardly ever returned. When he did, it was for the funeral of a fallen friend. After it was over, Colt went to his father's house for dinner. Although he hadn't seen him in 8 years, his father had been writing to him regularly. Upon entering the house, he saw his nephew for the first time in over 10 years and noticed that his father had made many changes. As he was leaving for the night, his father suggested he avoid the park at all costs. He called Zane, who told him that a year after he broke things off with Lyric, she had taken an ax to the tree where he'd carved their initials.
The angst, drama, and conflict in this story were so high that they felt like overkill. So much of it didn't fit, and the plot seemed to meander down too many paths that came to a dead-end. Too many things were going on that had no explanation as to why they were included in the story or how they pertained to the two main characters. The push/pull between them was through the roof and, for the most part, unwarranted. It was also true that the spice level was almost non-existent and, when it did put in an appearance, it felt contrived, dull, and boring.
The MMC was decidedly NOT well-developed OR mature. He made snap decisions based on where his emotions were, and he never took into consideration what anyone else thought about it. This was true right up to the final words of the story. Even when the FMC told him she didn't want to start over with him, he put his wants/needs above hers. On the other hand, the FMC went through all of the stages of grieving the lost relationship, and she came out on the other side in better form than what the MMC left her in. She even moved on. Whether or not she remained celibate during their separation was never fully addressed to the reader's satisfaction. Nor was the MMC's celibacy confirmed or denied to any satisfaction.
The author managed to skim over most of what happened in the past and did not allow the reader (or the main characters) to get any real closure on most matters that should have had a simple resolving answer. With all of the information dumping that went on in this book, it left even more important issues out and felt incomplete because of it. Most of the conflict was out of place and made for a sluggish reading.
The fact that it took the MMC 17 chapters to realize that "I finally have something and someone to be here for" was a major blow and downer, especially as the "someone" happened to be the one person he had all along and tossed aside like yesterday's news.
I only gave this story a three-star rating because there were too many unresolved issues and the book felt incomplete. I went into this book with such high hopes, only to be let down repeatedly. Unfortunately, there were too many questions that remained unanswered, and that's never a good thing in such a book.

Lyric is a strong, independent woman who does not put up with anyone’s bs...including the man who broke her heart many years ago. Colt is that man that broke her heart ...he was the love of her life. He has has come back into her life but she’s not going to make it easy on him.
Colt knows he made a huge mistake with Lyric but he can’t let go of his love for her. He thought his would be the best for him and Lyric but he soon finds out, it was the worst decision he made.
Awesome book filled with love, forgiveness and understanding.
I requested an arc and I’m proving my honest review.
Warrior by A.M. Brooks is the story of Colt and Lyric. Colt and Lyric grew up as neighbor kids but their feeling grew into more than friends. But then when they were older Colt up and left never seaming to look back. This of course hurts Lyric when he leaves so unexpected really. Now in their present day they end up meeting again. Will this be their time to come together and for Colt to open up as to why he left? Enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author.
Lyric and Colt started their story in their childhood and ended as adults. Their love was an instant love. Struggles that come through life found them and ripped them apart. Would they ever be together? This story is gripping honestly. At first I thought this will be a simply love story….but the author has a way with words and they way she spins this tail is amazing. I was on the edge of my seat waiting with the rest of the world to know will they won’t they. This is an adventure and even though it has a couple in love it has an who done story twisted in too. Death and decisions keep these two apart will fate step in the put them together again.
Warrior by A.M. Brooks is a beautiful Military Romance/Second Chance Romance. I always fall in love with A.M. Brooks stories. Her writing is beautiful, her characters capture your heart and she add the perfect amount of action to keep things more interesting. Warrior captured my heart, the love they have for each other, the heartbreak they deal with, and how close of a friendship they have is just amazing. This was a quick sweet read that packs a punch. I hope to see more of Lyric, Colt, and Zane in future books (esp Zane.... I want to know his story!) If you are in the need of a quick sweet read that has some acrion then you need to check out Warrior!
This slow burn, second chance romance came packed with action and emotions. From the very beginning, we were on a rollercoaster, riding the emotional highs and lows of Lyric & Colt. From the moment they met, they were endgame, even if they didn’t realize it right away. And as they got older and embraced it, their relationship was beautiful. Colt has a nice little while to make up for, some poor decisions, and some thoughtless actions. Luckily, Lyric has some time to spare for him.
The story flowed so well I read it straight through the night. I couldn't put it down! The love, heartache, and chaos made my own heart hurt. Lyric and Colts story was gripping and incredible.
Another new author for me but one I wouldn't hesitate to read again and again. This book itself was incredible. The storyline and the characters were so easy to read about. Although parts of this story did tug at my heart overall it was fantastic. Very well written and so enjoyable to read.
