As a certified integrative life and wellness coach and big fan of Kaiser's Self Love Experiment, I was excited to see a new book coming in Spring 2022 and couldn't wait to dive in. Return To You does not disappoint. From the four 'core ideas' presented in the Introduction to tips on understanding, processing, and transcending your fear, Kaiser builds a message of self-empowerment and self-trust. Having chosen Season as my 'word of the year' before even opening this book, I was pleasantly surprised and wholly aligned with Chapter 2: Your Soul Has Seasons. Return To You is packed with interesting information, helpful questions and prompts, and actionable strategies for not only cultivating inner peace, but also an unshakeable sense of self and worthiness. There is a significant spiritual component to Kaiser's writing in Return To You, compassionate, inclusive, and open for interpreting along the practices of any faith. The inclusion of deeply personal stories is illustrative rather than indulgent, and the universality of the lessons offers nuggets anyone can personalize and use.

The main idea of Return To You can be summarized in what Kaiser presents as this 'life truth' - We can't solve our problems with outside solutions; lasting resolutions are always solved by the wisdom within. And, we are all wise to remember that the universe rewards motion. I highly recommend this book for those seeking personal growth, to deepen a spiritual relationship with oneself, or closer alignment with purpose.

I received a digital pre-publication copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So impressed by this book! Deeply practical spirituality. Shannon breaks concepts down so they’re incredibly useable and understandable. I feel like this book is like a warm and reassuring hug, that will help you remember your connection to the divine. It’s words are truly reassuring, and resonate with truth. Highly recommend!!!!!!

It’s good but so much information. I think this would be better as a physical book so you could mark it up and return to certain areas and topics as needed.

Biggest takeaways: trust in the divine (which definitely was NOT just a Christian God as she clearly explained in the beginning of the book, unlike what some people are saying). She was calling out to whatever you hold sacred and by whatever name you use, and she said that clearly right up front. It is as applicable to Christians as Pastafarians. The other biggest takeaway was that love is everything. Love is it. Love is the answer, love is the solution. That fit perfectly with my family’s mindset of “Family is everything,“ and I would much rather look at this world from a loving perspective than one of fear, hatred, or distrust.

I must admit, she lost a star with her Zen approach to the 2020 election and all the tragedy that happens in the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I admired her refusal to get drawn into the fight because whatever you do, you have people on both sides. However, she pressed too hard on the idea that whatever would happen would be for the best. Perhaps in a karmic, universal manner that would be true. And to a certain extent, you might even be able to practice that in your own life.

But to expect that level of acceptance and poise from everyone when you have a sick child, or a loved one who passes away, or a disaster happens, or some of the truly horrible things that are occurring in society play out on the daily news, or there’s another school shooting… That bothered me. I couldn’t make that leap. I’m pleased that she could say that she trusted in her faith, and that everything would be fine, but I kept thinking of all the people for whom that could never be true. The lost star is for the tone-deafness and the lack of empathy or understanding that some people might need a greater coping mechanism than that, particularly for the people who have gone through some truly heinous things in this world.

I read through that section twice. And I kept saying “but what about“ in my head, and thinking that, at some point, you have to consider all of the real, honest trauma in the world, and put yourself in others’ shoes. It’s easy to say to trust in a higher power, but when you’re in the thick of it, and that higher power seems to have deserted you, and you’ve lost a child, there is no way that anyone could ever rationalize that away. You cannot make sense of the senseless and to just brush it away with “it is a higher plan“ or “we are here to learn on earth” doesn’t take into account the true pain that people feel. They need more than easy platitudes.

So overall pretty good, but for even a confirmed Pollyanna such as myself, it was a little bit too rosy and unrealistic.

Return to You is a self-help book by life coach, Shannon Kaiser. Kaiser shares her personal struggles with clinical depression and anxiety. Through this period of worry, fear, and self-doubt, she found solace through her spiritual journey. Return to You stresses the importance of making peace and love a priority. Kaiser presents 11 spiritual lessons and effectively encourages us to go within, understand our emotions, and detach from negative patterns.

I truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. As someone who is also very spiritual, Kaiser nailed every single chapter in this book. After discovering these lessons on my own journey, Return to You acts as a tool that I can reference for gentle reminders every now and again. For those who are starting their spiritual journey, this book is a perfect guide for seeing things through a new perspective. I recommend for readers to really take their time with each lesson to properly absorb the information. When it comes to creating new habits, nothing is learned overnight. Thank you to NetGalley and Sounds True for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I love Shannon Kaiser’s books, and this one did not disappoint. There are many thought provoking questions and exercises to help us navigate through life. Very useful. And I will return to the book for journal prompts and when life gets overwhelming.

One tiny criticism - the physical book seemed to have a very small font and line spacing was tight too. Maybe this is an effort to save paper, but I had never seen a book so ‘crammed in’ before. It seemed different.

Really loved one of her earlier books, but this didn't resonate with me. Very similar to Gabby Bernstein's books. Some good stuff, but not much that was really new to me.

Shannon Kaiser is probably my all-time favorite spiritual writer, she is so compassionate and authentic and her ideas resonate strongly with me. Until now, The Self-Love Experiment was my favorite of her books, but Return to You is phenomenal, and very much the book I needed to read right now. One of the best things about Shannon is how she tackles hard and divisive topics (e.g., covid, the 2020 presidential election) in utterly neutral ways, she explains how to live with the intense stress of the times but never proselytizes or even makes her perspective known. I find that incredibly refreshing, as so many authors today seem hellbent on cramming their political opinions down readers’ throats.

Return to You is indeed a blueprint for finding unshakeable inner peace, and I will be returning to its lessons as I strive to achieve this for myself.
