night cry is a dark, dreamy, quiet graphic novel. the nighttime art is super pretty and atmospheric, and perhaps the best part of the book.

girls on bench

it's about three girls - an apathetic witch, a grumpy demon, and a friendly comic fan. they're all spirited and relatable. the art style doesn't give them facial features, but they communicate with expressive body language and dialogue, which is very creative.

there's also a theme song, holly golightly's all around the houses, which helps bring the wistful witchy vibes.

but i couldn't really say what this story is about. there's a nighttime radio show that talks about local girls going missing. there's a secret issue of the witch's comic series. there's the demon's struggle to grant a wish for the apathetic witch. but i'm not sure what actually happens in these pretty pages. the ending seems like it's supposed to pack a huge twisty punch, but i was lost.

oh, and it's interesting that some reviewers describe this graphic novel as sapphic. i suppose there's a small hint of a romantic bond between witch and demon, but i wouldn't classify it as wlw representation. it's always nice to have at least a lil hint of sapphic though.

i'd still recommend this to readers who enjoy melancholy vibes, atmospheric nighttime art, and moody characters. but be prepared for an abstract and unresolved storyline!

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I actually thought this was very good. I thought the art was great and I was interested in the storyline. It just ended too quickly. I want to know what happens next!

Laura is such a fun character. She’s quirky, magical, and just interesting. Theresa is alright, but Laura really carries the story and makes it more compelling. She’s like a mopey, yet hopeful witch. Which is intriguing, so I’m looking forward to reading the next installation to see how her character develops.

The art is quite dark, literally, so you’ll need to read this in some good lighting and if you’re reading the digital version, you’re better off on an iPad or something other than your phone. I think a phone would be too small to catch all the details.

I recommend this to someone looking for a graphic novel series that’s dark, yet fun at times and are okay with a bit of a cliffhanger.

Thanks to NetGalley, Europe Comics, and Borja González for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Poetic and a bit surrealist, sometimes funny but mostly wistful and... terribly frustrating: I have not a single clue as to what the end means. And from the reviews I’ve read we’re a crowd.

Yet the slow melancholic narration, the very nice art and storytelling- somewhere between Mignola and Paul Craig Russel-and the fancy style and artistic stance- the characters have neither faces nor feet and no real hands to speak of, the color chart is flat light pastels (mainly blues) only-made me fall under its spell...

...to an extent.

I’d really want to rate it 4* but the apparently meaningless conclusion left me too much wanting. I’m not against open ended stories or having to think the end over and coming to my own interpretation but there’s not enough material here to do just that.

There's a demon, and the demon loves anime (because anime is everywhere), and she is summoned by a semi-witch who owns an occult bookstore. The semi-witch gets a wish from the demon, but doesn't know what to wish for, so the demon can't move on until she does. Girls have been disappearing, so the semi-witch starts to investigate those disappearances. And it's all quite charming, eventhough the book doesn't have a real ending, it sort of just runs out of pages.

The art is curious because no one has eyes, and it's kind of startling how quickly you accept that, and how expressive the characters still are. I liked the art a lot.

"Cosplayer, occult fan, and alcoholic. I really hit the jackpot with you."

What would you wish for if you were granted one wish from an anime-loving demon?

This came recommend to me because my friend said it was one that’ll make you think and that is what this did. It’s not your typical graphic novel with a witch and a demon. It’s one where you have to let everything sink it, look at all the details, and come up with your own conclusions. And that makes this so very unique and it has endless possibilities.

The art is perfect. The way that the characters have emotionless faces made you connect more with the story and it was excellent. The colors blend perfectly making everything stand out but never overpower.

The story was good. It kept you interested but never fully revealed itself. It was weird in a way but I throughly enjoyed that I could come up with what actually took place.

Night Cry was an interesting graphic novel. It was strange for sure and out there different. You’ll easily fall in love with the Demon. I can’t wait to see what else this author releases. I’m sure that it’s going to be great.

Night Cry is a dreamy and mystic graphic novel with unusual characters: a witch that is not really one and a demon that is an anime fan. Constantly, we have an eerie feeling that someone or something is lurking in the shadows. There’s not much of the story, so it’s hard to describe the plot without giving it all away. Not a lot of dialogues here, so this is a quick read. But we don’t get to know all that we want to. The story is often blurry, and we get bits and pieces. The author leaves some parts of the story to our imagination and interpretation. So, maybe you will want to reread this after you finish. And you may still have a feeling that you’re missing something.

3.5 stars. I liked the mood, but the story left me with too many questions. I loved the unique style of illustrations, though. All characters are drawn without faces.

Thanks to Europe Comics for the ARC and the opportunity to read this! All opinions are my own.

ENGLISH REVIEW:

More like 3.5 stars

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me an arc.

Night Cry is a sapphic graphic novel, it's set in a town where many people have gone missing and everyone starts forgetting their names. In the same place we meet Teresa, a witch running a bookstore that specializes in magic and the occult, her frequent client Matilda and a pink otaku demon, Laura.

During through the graphic novel we learn more about the three characters and we see how the relationship between Laura and Teresa evolves, along with Matilda, who is a side character but with great importance.

It's kind of a shady story, but I really enjoyed it.

Tw & cw: alcohol, missing people, bad words.

Tw y cw: alcohol, gente desaparecida, groserías.

I enjoyed this much more than A Gift for a Ghost. Admittedly, the background story about a town where girls are vanishing into thin air is a bit vague and hard to follow at times, but the real charm comes from the interactions between the three misfit protagonists.

Teresa is a mopey goth woman that runs an occultist book store and practices witchcraft in secret. Laura is an ancient pink-haired demon that's bored of mundane human affairs so she spends most of her time reading manga and watching anime when she's not granting wishes. Matilda is a skateboarding punk nerd in high school that enjoys all the hobbies that Teresa and Laura enjoy so she spends her free time hanging out with the two of them.

This is a unique pairing of characters that get up to some hilarious and heartwarming antics as ghostly horror mysteries occur in the background of their bizarre friendship. More of a subtly creepy slice of life story than a true horror story, but I enjoyed it as a fan of many of the things these three girls bond over such as heavy metal, manga and dark fiction.

Night Cry is a very stylistic graphic novel about... magic, I think.
While the cover got me interested in the dark and somewhat mysterious drawing style, I found it somewhat lacking in the book itself. We only ever get a vague idea of what the characters look like. Which isn't that bad by itself, but because a lot of colours in the scenes change drastically to visualise light and shadows, soon you realize it's extremely hard to recognise the 3 charathers. And as the story progressed I found it more and more hard to understand the movements and actions of the people, which added to the confusion,
As for the story, I'm not entirely sure what to say. It started out as a mystery about disappearing girls, but soon we when into a fully different direction, only to get another twist and... I got lost. I don't know what exactly this story tried to convey, as I didn't even understand it very well.
If you like dark and vaguely told stories (which I know can be a very real preference, more power to you guys, honestly) this might be just up your alley. But it wasn't for me, as the only thing I really got to enjoy were the colours.

Czym czaruje "Nocny krzyk"? To skomplikowane.

To zadupie to jeden wielki horror"

To komiks o smutku prowincji, o depresji i pustce bohaterki, o ucieczce w światy wykreowane, wymyślone, wystylizowane.

Night Cry by Borja González.

Teresa runs a bookstore specializing in magic and the occult. One night she summons Laura, an anime-loving demon. Laura is there to grant her any wish, but Teresa doesn't know what to ask for and so Laura is stuck with her until then.

I really like the art. The color scheme is limited. The characters have no features, hands, or feet, but still convey every single emotion. The story is both sweet, melancholic, funny and slightly surreal. The ending is left kind of open. Not really sure what to think of that.

What the fuck did I just read? LOL

I'm not entirely sure what was happening through a lot of this comic, but I also couldn't stop reading it. I really love the art style, and dug the sort of mundane ho-hum life but with some spooky and wistful overtones mood. I found Laura super interesting, and really loved Matilda. Through most of the story I was just sort of puzzled, and at the end a few of the puzzle pieces clicked into place (but I still felt like I wasn't working with the whole picture). It's sort of hauntingly wistful, and beautiful in a sort of sparse, spartan way.

Night Cry would be a great Halloween read, or a quick graphic novel to get you in the spooky mood. We have a town where people are going missing and the story circulates around this girl who runs an occult bookshop. The best part of graphic novels, in my opinion, is being able to see the settings. This bookshop is incredible and I wish I could pluck it out of the frame and shove it somewhere downtown.

This occult bookshop owner closes down early one night, dresses up as a witch, dons a sword, and summons a demon. The demon can grant this girl one wish, but the problem is… she has no clue what to wish for. So, the demon comes home with her and sleeps in her bed. This demon is also obsessed with Japan and anime: super cute personality, but fiery as hell.

There were so many things I loved about this graphic novel. I adored the artwork. I know it’s an ARC, so that may change, but I hope it doesn’t. None of the characters have faces and I love that style. I also loved the idea of this occult bookshop and the zine that the owner writes. The only thing I didn’t love was the ending. It was murky and confusing. I’m not really sure I understand what happened, which is horrible because I grew really invested with these characters.

First and foremost, I'd like to express my gratitude to Netgalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this graphic novel.

The visual style of this novel was soft, and the premise was intriguing, but I found the first half to be slightly unclear. I got lost at one point, but as the plot progresses, I gradually came to comprehend what was going on.

MUCHO mejor que The Black Holes.

This is incredible. It's got beautiful, surreal art (I love the lack of detailed faces and how emotional the story is regardless), it's got a great ghost story -- it's about the power of creation when the things you create are dark, it's about the desires put into each book, it's about need and want in self expression. The way all that is mixed together with the ongoing thread of the night time talk radio is just -- it's just really great. It keeps its conclusions vague, but in a way that just really perfectly works with the genre and lets you form your own conclusions.

this comic was very dreamy. the illustrations are absolutely beautiful and everything seemed to be tied together well. honestly the only reason as to why it wasn’t a 4 star read for me is because i felt like there wasn’t a lot of character development for some of the mcs. however, it is a quick and easy read for when you want to bump up your reading total for the year, and if you like witchy stories then this could definitely be the comic for you.

Buzzword challenge 2023, December: sound words

Stunning artwork! I can’t believe how well these characters come across despite having no facial expressions. All the faces are blank in this comic, but the attention to bodily gestures and key identifying characteristics conveys everything you need to know as a reader. I agree with other reviewers that the ending is abrupt and unresolved, but I don’t mind thinking on this one for a while. I’d like to return to this book for the mood and the aesthetics.
