If I could have put off meeting Thompson’s family forever, I would have. But he made it crystal clear it was important to him, and I got the feeling if I blew it off again, I’d lose him.
So, like a good boyfriend, I accompanied him to the rustic city of Big Bear, hoping for the best. I expected awkward moments, and funny looks from his family. What I didn’t see coming was having to hang out with his perfect ex-lover, Alexander, and for dead bodies to start piling up.
Working and living together, Thompson and I formed a bond I didn’t think could be broken. But when he starts doubting my abilities, and pulling away, simply because he doesn’t like what I’m saying, I start to realize maybe we were never as tight as I’d thought.
Thompson needs to decide if he wants to protect the past, more than he wants to join me in the future. He thinks I’m just scared of commitment, and so I’m causing trouble. But the reality is, Thompson is the person with one foot out the door.

But to let it be free to adapt to the situation. Give your partner the key and accept his heart key so you each control access to and from the other's safe place. This will build trust and confidence to be able to survive fights, family, friends, exes, sexes, pests and animals. Even two death attempts per book for three books for Liam. You have to have extra help with the enemies, especially if unknown.
A totally new situation for Liam and a totally changed family visit for Thompson pulled them together when fighting, but revealed where the problem was in spite of all the unbelief at first.
It isn't terrible. But it also isn't great, and IMHO, it needed much better editing than it got.
For instance, in the opening chapter Liam calls spruce "spruce pines" several times. Um. No. Not colloquially, and not botanically, no. A content edit would have eliminated that and the terrible police procedural fails. A line edit would have cleaned up the frequent repetition, and could have eliminated at least half of the telling in favor of displaying or showing what Liam is feeling or thinking, as well as the one grammar fail I noticed. (Also, there was a positive Ellen Degeneres mention, and this is why one doesn't reference living celebrities, writer-kids.)
Worst, though, is Liam using the word 'moron' and thinking 'dummy' when he's insulting someone who hates him. Those are slurs against people with actual mental issues and in 2020 ought to be avoided. A sensitivity reader would have flagged that.
Finally, and most damning, and why I won't read further in this series, is the disconnect between Liam and Thompson. It felt contrived most of the time. I felt manipulated.
I was waiting for this book and S.c. Wynne didn't disappoint! I love the relationship between Liam and Thompson. It was written perfectly and we had just the right amount of romance for the mystery, which was a good one. You really felt Liam's insecurities but I cheered watching him learn to stand up for himself. And Thompson has grown as a character. A great overreaching story arc for the series. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next for these two.
BYTCH, WHEN I TELL YOU I WAS FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE READING THIS DAMN BOOK... The saving grace was Kale Williams' amazing voice acting.
I can't even summarize my trials and tribulations, so you'll just have to read listed out here.
1.0% "Spending 2 weeks with someone else's family THE FIRST TIME MEETING THEM sounds like hell on Earth. Is this book in the horror genre, or what?"
7.0% "Heh, it's finally been pointed out how strange it is that Liam still calls his SO by his last name. To be fair, Kimball as a first name is a mouthfull."
11.0% "Eww, inviting your son's ex to the family vacation while his new SO is meeting the family for the first time is NASTY work."
23.0% "The amount of times I've yelled out "BITCH!" when Thompson's ex has opened his mouth is giving me extra fingers."
25.0% "Thompson and his family are TRAAAAASH, omg. I kinda love to hate them. Not so much Thompson, because I want to believe the best of him, but all of the rest of them can kick rocks."
33.0% "The fact that Thompson is so ready to call out Liam when he says something even SLIGHTLY off color regarding his (Thompson's ex), but says nothing when his ex is popping off at Liam is DERANGED. *THE EX HAS BROUGHT UP THE SERIAL KILLER WHO TRIED TO K1LL LIAM 3 TIMES ALREADY!!! The times Thompson has told him to stop? ZERO. *If this book ends without the MCs talking about Thompson's/fam's behavior, I'm rioting."
48.0% "Oh, woooow. Thompson finally said maybe they shouldn't invite his ex along with them on their family bike ride like his brother suggested. Man has finally found his spine! Probably crumpled and dusty in a basement, completely detached form his brain. *And what did his mom do? Say they should invite ex to dinner afterwards if they weren't going to invite him bike riding. *TF."
56.0% "The ex calling a dead 19 year old sexy multiple times is a whole other level of gross. And Liam finds this relatable????"
58.0% ""You've never doubted me before..." *Liam....sweetie....honey...what was the majority of book 2, then? Thompson doesn't have the best track record of trusting your instincts."
78.0% "Sandy...help. Thompson just made dinner plans with the ex and didn't tell Liam about it. The ex told Liam. Thompson doesn't even realize the ex is doing this shit on purpose. *Can a person strangle a book?"
98.0% "This some bvllsh1t. The truth comes out and Liam is still trying to protect Thompson's family's feelings. THEY ADMITTED THEY KNEW THOMPSON'S EX WAS BEING A SHIT. *Throw away the whole family."
This one had me sitting on the edge of my chair for most of its length. The conflict between Liam and Thompson was excruciating to see, and I was SO angry with Thompson! I wanted to scream at him, and maybe to throw a little punch at him. But seriously! How could he not see what he was doing? How much he was hurting Liam? I'm glad that, at least, all this mess has lead them to a better place in their relationship.
Again, I knew from the beginning who were the culprits (okay, the accomplice? he, I discovered later), and I was a little annoyed that Liam didn't get it, too. We both were seeing the same thoughts, and hearing the same ghosts, after all, :P But I guess he wouldn't let himself go there. Kind of easy to understand that, given the situation.
But the story was fantastic, thrilling and emotional. I love it to pieces! I hope we'll get a fourth book really soon :)
what was that? Was the bad guy supposed to be a surprise? to whom? a person who did not open the book maybe? Agatha Christie is rolling in her grave and Poirot is weeping at the inanity of it all!! Stupid detectives, and immature stupid psych. I'm insulted to the core at this weak mystery that could have been something.
I just completed an advanced review copy of SHADOWS DECEIVE by S.C. Wynne, the 3rd installment in her psychic detective series, and I loved it. I’m not going rehash the plot here because the book blurb and press materials do a fine job with that. Rather, I’ll keep my comments to why I believe this to be one of her best so far. The lead couple, Liam and Thompson, who are now familiar to us from the first two books, are progressing to the next logical step in their relationship and meeting the family of your significant other is what one would expect at this stage in their relationship. In this case, however, when one (Liam) is an only child who is also a psychic, and the other (Thompson) is a cop from a large family that is not accustomed to such things as spirits or those who can talk to the dead—and the first meeting is a 2-week vacation in cabin in the mountains—the potential for disaster increases 10-fold. Add to that, a manipulative ex-boyfriend, murder, and restless spirits, and you have all of the ingredients of a pretty explosive situation. The characters are well-written. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between the three brothers and their parents. The primary villain is artfully evil and cunning without lapsing into comic book stereotypes, and the plot is fast-moving and fun. I was completely engaged throughout the book and read it in one sitting.
Shadows Deceive is another awesome book in this terrific series! I thought it was the last book in this series and was so sad to see it end. But it's NOT and I'm so happy (doing my happy dance) :)
We are very familiar with Liam and Kimball's relationship from the first two books in this series. In this book, Liam is going to meet Kimball's family (yikes! like that's not nerve racking). So mix in Kimball's ex in the equation and let's add some spice and throw in some dead bodies. Yup, things just got a whole lot more nerve racking.
The characters of Kimball's brothers and parents were wonderfully written. A loving, close knit family with a great joie de vie. And every good story needs a good villain, but I'm not telling you whom that might be. You'll have to read it to find out, and you will not be disappointed. It's a story full of love, drama (the drunk kind. hehe) and mystery that will keep you sitting and turning that page to see what happens next. It's fast paced, fun and exciting and difficult to put down. Wonderfully written and a great flow through the entire book. Loved it!!!
I received an ARC of this book and in return, give freely and honestly my review.
These are, overall, very easy reads even if the mysteries are painfully obvious. This instalment frustrated me a lot. Thompson’s treatment of Liam is appalling and I wish Liam had more of a spine about it. I also found his family’s entanglement with Alexander very insensitive. To keep inviting him and mentioning him the same weekend they meet their son's new boyfriend is, at the very least, bad manners.
We need to be shown rather than told that these two love each other and are good for each other because thus far we only see a gruff dude who is way more concerned with his ex’s feelings and shuts down any attempt at addressing it by his current partner. Also needs an editor but it’s not egregious.
I have to admit this is only a 4 star by the skin of it's teeth. However, despite there not a huge amount of mystery regarding who the "bad guy" is, I really did enjoy this one. I have to admit though, if the author decides to continue to play the miscommunication card between Liam and Thompson rather than letting them actually move on and truly start strengthening their relationship, I won't be as generous with the next one!
Shadows Deceive by SC Wynne is the third book in the Psychic Detective Mysteries Series. There is heat, suspense, and drama. I adore Liam and Thompdon, they have some bumps but they also have a connection and strong chemistry. Their journey is fun and interesting. The secondary characters were well written and added to the story, the villain is well done as well. I felt emotions from the main characters, from jealousy, hurt, to comfort and love... I am just completely enthralled with Liam and Thompson's lovestory journey.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Meeting the family of your partner always is a little weird and you might feel a bit insecure - but when Liam stumbles over a body in their first night at Thompsons parents house all bets are off. Strange things are about to happen throughout the story and that will keep you glued to your device. Very amazing story that picks up a little after the second book ended. Loved it very much. Great.
Well, I gave it a four for the premise of the story even though the killer stuck out like a sore thumb. My problem were that I didn’t particularly like the characters. They didn’t feel real to me.
Having guessed the murderer from the moment he was introduced ... this mystery is not as well constructed as the earlier ones. The MCs have progressed in their relationship (in as far as meeting the folks anyways) but still remarkably rocky. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Liam and Thompson go to visit Thompson’s family. Liam is nervous but is willing to try. While there they stumble onto a crime.
Really gripping paranormal mystery. As the third book in the series, it is better to read the books in order. I felt that the tension between Liam and Thompson was believable. Sweet, spicy, and angsty. I liked that the story line was closed, yet future books are hinted at!
Rating (All ratings use a Scale of 1-5) = This review will be nearly identical to the one for book #2.
I don't always write reviews for 4 star reviews; +/- one star means a high majority would find it at least an average read.
Like the 1st and 2nd books, this was a 3.5 star read for me; that was easily bumped up to 4 stars for the engagement / entertainment value. But, there were some things that deserve a mention for anyone deciding on whether or not to read it.
Blurb = 3 stars, unlike the first one, I did not feel anything was missing from the blurb.
My Genre Scale = 4
Odds if not your genre = 2, though good, there is nothing that really lifts it above the genre intended.
Development of: = Rating this area is tricky for this book. Basically, the development was just enough it never effected the flow for me. *World = 2.5 not given a lot about psychics in this world at all - types, origins, roles, or how viewed or handled in the world at large. *Characters = 3 stars, there is some growth for both characters and as a couple. *Plot = 3 this was solid. Nothing vital left out and engaging for this type of story. But it was the bare bones minimum needed. For those that need more details and explanations, this might not be the story for you.
What stood out (taking in consideration I've completed over 2000 m/m books) = Nothing
Mood Type : Appeal to those looking for... (and /or those who should avoid) This is not what I would describe as a mystery. It's more like how was it done not who. I also feel there was a little more emphasis on the relationship side of the story intertwined and less procedural. There is sex, but it is not the focus. It flows well, questions are answered, and relationship progresses. More entertainment than a mind puzzle to read. It is not for a die hard mystery reader or a picky reader who reads everything with a critical eye.
Warnings = None
HFN/HEA = A definite HFN
Series Notes = This is the 3rd of 4 as of May 2022 *Reading on? Yes *Reading back to back? Yes *Can be easily read without the previous? This is definitely more of a continuation than a stand alone. There is enough background given, a laid back reader might not feel lost but a ton of context and texture would be missing.
Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... ) I am glad we finally have a 1st name for Thompson, and I adored his family! Otherwise, I covered pretty much all my thoughts in the above. I was pleasantly surprised by how deeply engaged I stayed. I am an avid watcher of the % complete on my Kindle even when enjoying a book. I rarely checked while reading this one, which was also true for the first two. It's nice to be surprised. For a laid back reader that enjoys this genre, I would definitely recommend it.
*************** Below is my philosophy on reviewing! *************** 1. I try to take into account and note common pet peeves noted by other readers 2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation. (What is brain candy? Publishing industry 's version of pop music - Typically: formulaic, from a prolific author published often and quickly (like monthly), things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc..) It has its uses: to pass time when tired, on the beach, etc... The problem comes when "brain candy" is unexpected or even disguised. 3. Why rate the blurbs? : Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it; I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb. 4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing: Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2022) was a 3.60 average for 1715 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 800 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads. 5. I'm really confused by reviews that consist of just 2 to 3 sentences - with no explanation or evidence. I'm even more baffled when it receives "likes". I'm unsure of how it is useful to others on whether or not to pick a book, for example: "It was a fun read". Umm okay... What made it fun? For that matter, what do you define as fun? Do not even get me started on people who have rated over a 1000 books with a 4.99 rating average. How is that helpful? And there's is absolutely no way that every book is above average great / 5 star read. Why even bother to rate books? 6. I am not a writer nor a wordsmith, but I am a passionate reader. I joined the m/m group years ago, but I mostly lurk. I like to ask questions, debate, and quite possibly play Devil's advocate - which is hard to do online, with unknown people - to whom you are also an unknown- and no body language is available to convey intent. Plus, true debates seems to be a lost art form where respect and even friendliness can be shown between those with fundamentally different opinions.
Delightful meeting the family with spirits, murder, and an ex-boyfriend that needs to go away. This story-line was solid and the characters just keep developing and i just love them more each book. The pacing was excellent and I could not put it down. Thompson's family was wonderful and I so enjoyed their dynamic. I really did want to have a talk with Thompson and how he treated his ex. Nothing inappropriate, but gave him way too much time. The bad guy in this story is very skillfully created and very twisted.
Liam and Thompson are amazing and always make me smile as I watch them love each other. This story really tested their boundaries and brought them closer than ever. We do have some foreshadowing of a previous adversary that may come back into the future of this pair. Kinda eerie.
This is book three of the Psychic Detective Mysteries series and really should be read in order.
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my honest opinion and review
After reading the first two books in this series I couldn’t wait to get back into the world of Liam and Thompson and of course spirits. In this book they have been living together for months and Liam cannot put off visiting Thompson’s family any longer. He is terrified, he doesn’t do well with people, doesn’t understand families being an only child and was never close to his parents but they welcomed him even with his “gift” the real fly in the ointment was Alexander, Thompson’s ex boyfriend, rich successful and good looking and part of Thompson’s family! It quickly became apparent that he was playing Thompson and driving a wedge between them. Even on vacation murder followed them as did the spirits and it was painful to watch the relationship between Liam and Thompson falling apart. I know this is book 3 of a 3 part series but how can it be left with the evil Pine still lurking in the background wanting Liam dead!!! We really need another book, please.
Damn, I stayed up too late last night because I had difficulty putting this book down. I haven't gotten anything done around my house for the past 1-1/2 days because I was reading this series. What a nail-biting, suspenseful, wonderful addition to the series this book is.
Thompson finally convinces Liam to visit Thompson's family with him. Liam is so damn nervous about it, knowing how he is an acquired taste for most people. He has no experience on dealing with families due to his horrible family growing up. The two weeks were going to be difficult anyway, but the addition of Thompson's ex-lover to the group just blows that up.
I won't say too much other than I wanted to kick Thompson in the pants - or at least shake him - for how he treated Liam.
I will have to patiently wait for the next book to come out. I'll just say that it can't be soon enough for me.
An improvement on Book 2, which was lacking 'something'. While you knew the outcome from the get go, the way to the outcome was a trip down a dark and evil laneway. An insight into the mind of a deranged and delusional psychopath. Liam stepped up in this book, he was more decisive and less whiney. He was more willing to see what was happening to the relationship with Thompson and make some decisions (although he was still wallowing in unhelpful insecurities). While Thompson had his head buried a long way up his .... playing right into Alexander's hands. What evil plans does Pine have for book 4 - I suspect it will be hideous and gruesome and the two MC's will have their work cut out for them in every way. Lets wait and see...
Meeting your partner's family for the first time is never stress free. Add in an ex-boyfriend and murder, and you have a fantastic story. I'm not usually drawn to the paranormal in a book, but it did not distract from my enjoyment one bit. The story takes us through places we've all been, concern over your partner's exes, worry about being worthy of love, and calling out your partner on their flaws. (Even if while drunk in front of family!) This was a joy to read, difficult to put down, and left me wanting more.
This mystery had just as many twists and turns as the previous volume. The relationship between Liam and Thompson is also filled with a few twists because old loves are sometimes hard to leave behind. So are certain creepy villains...
I was a little annoyed with Liam's attitude towards BDSM. He seemed creeped out by it which felt ironic to me because some people find his abilities as creepy as he found BDSM. Anyway...
If you enjoyed the previous two books, the mystery and romance in this one will not disappoint.
Another mystery to solve for Liam and Thompson, and this time it's with Thompson's family in plain view. I actually loved the Thompson family, especially the mom. The brothers were annoying, like all brothers can be, but they truly do love each other. The mystery is good. The angst is high. The s3 is warm and steamy. All in all its a good solid mystery that further explores the relationship between Liam and Thompson. Letting a crazy, sadistic almost come between them
I received an audio copy of the book in a contest on S.C. Wynne's Facebook group. I'm being generous with my stars as it was more a 3.5 rating. There was a lot of relationship building between Liam and Thompson which is needed in any relationship. I had the bad guy figured out fairly soon after he appeared. I don't know if it was Kale Williams' narration as he did do a very good evil voice for the guy or what but I did stick it out to the end.
