Songs of Love and Strength is a unique collection of over 100 beautiful, moving and inspiring poems about the many different experiences of motherhood.
I finished this poetry collection one and a half months ago. I admit I am the lousiest person when it comes to reviewing books on Goodreads. But I still love to keep track of what I read.
This poetry collection by The Mum Poem Press is the best ode to motherhood. Each poem is an honest masterpiece. The verses are heartrending and soulful. I am amazed that so many mothers chose poetry as their medium to stay attuned to their feelings.
These are the poems that blew my mind away:
1. When I Gave Birth by Imogen Schäfer 2. Bitter Taste by Rachel Dickens 3. Cats by Catherine Hamilton 4. Don't Buy Her Flowers by Jen Feroze 5. First Born by Ruth Aylett 6. Unsolicited Advice by Nazia Hamidah 7. I've Just Had a Baby by Annie Ridout 8. That First Year by Karen McMillan 9. Chronicles of a Breastfeeder by Jessica Kaliisa 10. It's Milk by Daisy Bates 11. This book arrived all the way from the UK (I live in Chennai, India) and I'd cherish it lifelong. Worth hundreds of rereads!
Thank you to @themumpoempress for my gorgeous copy of this collection of poems. ‘Songs of Love and Strength’ really was a powerful collection of poems that really resonated with me as a mother, but I also think would resonate with parents generally. I read some of them to my husband and he certainly felt the truth in them.
I have so much love for this book. It is full of wonderful honest moving and sometimes funny poetry. So many of the poems resonated with me. A gorgeous book I will be coming back to again and would gift to other mums.
Truly an honour to be a part of this anthology among such beautiful voices. Raw, relatable, vivid poetic accounts of those early motherhood days (and mostly nights)! Thank you, Katharine, for providing a space for us poets in the trenches of early motherhood to find our voices and express ourselves. I hope many other new mothers will find themselves in these poems and realize they're not alone.
