About the author

Jenny Valentine moved house every two years when she was growing up. She has just moved house again, probably not for the last time. She worked in a wholefood shop in Primrose Hill for fifteen years where she met many extraordinary people and sold more organic loaves than there are words in her first novel. She has also worked as a teaching assistant and a jewellery maker. She studied English Literature at Goldsmiths College, which almost put her off reading but not quite.
Jenny is married to a singer/songwriter and has two children.

In 2007, Jenny won the Guardian Prize for Children's Fiction with her debut novel FINDING VIOLET PARK.

Jenny Valentine has been one of my favourite authors since Finding Violet Park was published in 2007. I’ve enjoyed all her books (Broken Soup is my favourite), and was so excited to see that she’s back with a new YA book this year.

Us in the Before and After is written in typical Jenny Valentine style; it’s pacey, beautiful, and endlessly quotable. I actually sent several lines to my friend in the hope they might help with what she’s currently going through, which just goes to show how well-written this book is. It’s a subtle meditation on grief and loss, and I’ve personally taken a lot from it that I hope might help me too.

Valentine’s characters, Elk, Mab, France, and Knox, are ones I instantly took a liking to. The page count may be short and the chapters fleeting, but these four characters all stole my heart in one way or another. Whether it be Knox with his five-year-old innocence, France’s missing sock story, or Mab and Elk’s unwavering friendship, I loved them all and was happy to stay entwined in their lives.

I’ve been purposely vague in this review, as I really don’t want to give anything away about the story and how it progresses. It starts with a friendship and a tragedy, and ends with an understanding of life, death and everything inbetween. As usual I didn’t guess what was happening, or what heartbreak the author had up her sleeve, so I was duly surprised by the time I got to the final page. Sometimes it pays off to be an unwittingly obtuse reader!

As with all Jenny Valentine’s books, my only complaint is that I wish they were longer. I do think it would take away the succinctness of her stories, but I would selfishly love to prolong my stay in her worlds, even if it meant I was even more of a mess by the end of them.

If you’ve never heard of Jenny Valentine before, and you’ve never had the pleasure of reading one of her books, now’s your chance. Us in the Before and After will appeal to YA and adult readers alike, and I hope it gets all the book love it deserves.

Well, I don't know what happened exactly, but it has everything to do with Jenny Valentine's exquisite way of writing perfect sentences that you want to constantly write down, while at the same time she gently holds you heart and then completely crushes it to pieces.

I saw it coming from page 11, the crying that is. Knowing that 'Us in the Before and After' is a story about death and friendship does not guarantee tears per se, but Valentine's handling the story and superb writing style does. So profoundly tragic and beautiful at the same time - like life itself, which for me got so clear again last year after facing death, loss and love (again).

I won't spill anything of the storyline, but it's fūcking perfect. I loved it. And at the same time ugly cried my eyes out of their sockets. Thank you, Jenny Valentine, I love you for making me feel this 💙

Książka, która w zasadzie od początku przyciągnęła mnie tematem żałoby do siebie jednak nie było to zupełnie to czego się spodziewałam.

Historia jest bardzo krótko i czyta sie ją ekspresowo. Miałam jednak problem z rozeznaniem kiedy byly rozdziały w perspektywie przed a kiedy po bo nie było to w ogóle zaznaczone. Dostajemy perspektywe kilku wydarzeń z życia Elk i Mab zanim coś się wydarzyło i po tym. Najważniejsze autorka zostawia na koniec i to był najmocniejszy punkt tej historii. Wzbudza sporo emocji i smutku, zwłaszcza gdy się potem cofnie do sceny na cmentarzu znowu🥺…

Autorka skupia się na ogromnej przyjaźni między dziewczynami, zbudowaniem jej historii i tego jak losy dziewczyn się przeplatały. Jednak przez dość krótką objętość nie poczułam tego, bardziej mam wrażenie poruszło mnie to co było między France a Elk i złościło mnie podejście Mab do tego.

Zabrakło mi nieco właśnie omówienia tematu tej załoby i żalu - bohaterowie są pogrążeni w rozpaczy ale nie jest ona głównym przedmiotem tej opowieści. Był potencjał wręcz ogromny, ale za mało poświęcono uwagi procesowi po wydaje mi się. Owszem widzimy jak każde z bohaterów na swój sposób mierzy się ze śmiercią, ale dotyczy to jedynie młodszych bohaterów. I w tym miejscu znowu wrócę do sceny na cmentarzu i jej ogromnego wydźwięku. To wszystko porusza po skończeniu całej historii i daje do myślenia.

Idealna na krótkie popołudnie, skłaniająca do refleksji nad czekaniej na później. Polecam!

This book broke my heart but it was a beautiful ride filled with friendship and young love. The ending came so out of pocket I really was caught off guard, it hit me pretty hard, i wont lie tears were shed.

Przed sięgnięciem po tą książkę nie spodziewałam się niczego. Książka jest bardzo króciutka, bo lekko ponad 200 stron, jednak emocjonalnie skrywa coś wielkiego. Poznajemy dwie przyjaciółki Elk i Mab, które spotyka tragiczne wydarzenie i stają twarzą w twarz ze śmiercią. To w jaki sposób autorka napisała tą historię jest piękne, ale także bardzo smutne. Większość książki jest rozmową dziewczyn i pokazaniem przy tym ich historii. Od początku do końca.
Mimo tego, że książka jest objętościowo niewielka, to ten minimalizm robi tak wielką różnicę. Autorka pokazała, że nie trzeba wielkiej historii, by pokazać najprawdziwszą miłość. Miłość do przyjaciela. Jestem ogromną fanką tej książki, jej przesłania i każdej emocji jaką mi dała. Wciągnęła mnie od pierwszej strony, przez co pochłonęłam ją na raz, w około 2 godziny. Ciężko napisać coś więcej o fabule, bo wszystko może być spojlerem, ale jeśli potrzebujecie krótkiej książki, która wzrusza to polecam! Zakończenie jest moim zdaniem najmocniejszą częścią książki. Zwrot akcji, choć bolesny, napisany w totalnie piękny i wzruszający sposób, że sama się popłakałam. Jednak mimo to, będę wspominać tą książkę jako na swój sposób ciepłą i komfortową. Wow this book grabs you from the first page, and spits you out at the end thinking, I need to go right back and read it again. I never in a million years saw it all coming and wanted it to be so different. The story follows Elk and Mab (& their brothers). All the characters were gorgeous, the story flowed beautifully and I can’t wait to read more by Jenny Valentine.

I’ll be honest—I tried reading this book a few times before, but just couldn’t get into it. The beginning felt a bit slow, and I kept putting it down. I finally took it on holiday, determined to give it a proper chance… and I’m so glad I did.

Yes, it starts off slow, but after a few chapters, it completely pulls you in. Once I was hooked, I couldn’t stop—I even found myself walking around with the book in hand because I didn’t want to put it down!

It’s an emotional rollercoaster. One moment you’re smiling, the next you’re sad, then happy again, and at some points crying—but with happy tears. The story really tugs at your heart in the best way.

I’d absolutely recommend this book to others, but with one piece of advice: stick with it. Don’t let the slow start fool you like it did me—it’s 100% worth it.

İki gencin arasındaki sıkı dostluğu ve ölümün getirdiği hüznü okurken çok etkilendim. Kitabı nasıl bitirdim, son sayfalara nasıl ulaştım, inanın bilmiyorum ama sona geldiğimde o kadar çok ağladım ki… gözyaşları yüzünden satırları okuyamadım. Çok içten, çok gerçek bir hikâyeydi. Hiç beklemediğim noktalardan beni vurdu ve sarstı. Kesinlikle okumalısınız. Son zamanlarda okuduğum en güzel kitaptı.

Witam się w wami w recenzji "My Przed, My Po". Na temat tej historii mam trochę do powiedzenia, ale najpierw chciałabym podziękować wydawnictwu Jaguar za możliwość recenzowania tej książki! Jest to dla mnie naprawdę ogromna szansa<3.
Elk, główna bohaterka przeżyła wiele w swoim życiu - strata jednej z najważniejszych dla niej osób, czyli babci, a potem Mab, swojej przyjaciółki... którą widzi. Jako ducha. Postaci były bezbarwne, a ich zachowania nieco mnie irytowały. France, brat Mab, dawał mi vibe bad boya, którego wszyscy się boją, ale też takiego spokojnego chłopaka - spodobało mi się to połączenie, ale nic więcej nie potrafię powiedzieć o tej osobie.
Niestety ta powieść nie trafiła w moje gusta. Nie potrafiłam się wkręcić w fabułę, ciągle były zmiany czasu - musiałam zgadywać czy teraz jest czas "przed" czy "po". Nie było żadnego ciągu wydarzeń, zamiast tego dostaliśmy totalnie losowe wydarzenia. Poza skomplikowaną fabułą, nie wiedziałam kto nie żyje, końcówka strasznie mnie zdezorientowała. Co, kto i jak? Motyw ducha miał większą szansę na rozwinięcie. Spodobało mi się rozmowy o fizyce, świecie i rzeczywistości. Sama zaczęłam o tym rozmyślać i uważam, że świetnym pomysłem było wplątanie tych rzeczy w fabułę. Ani trochę nie interesowały mnie losy bohaterów, liczyłam, że uronię kilka łez, ale w żaden sposób ta książka mną nie poruszyła. Wszystko tu było powolne, ale jednocześnie cały czas panował chaos, bałagan - nic nie było tu dla mnie zrozumiałe, tak jak wcześniej wspomniałam, przez ciągłe zmiany czasu.
Doceniam wątek przyjaźni, który był przedstawiony w tej książce - Elk i Mab, mimo śmierci był nierozłączne. Uwielbiam ten motyw, bo zawsze po skończeniu historii z nim dopada mnie wdzięczność za ludzi, którymi się otaczam. Styl pisania autorki, mimo że nie potrafiłam się na początku do niego przyzwyczaić, był oryginalny i dojrzały. "My Przed, My Po" ma zaledwie 235 stron, co sprawia, że w miarę szybko przebrniemy przez tę powieść.
Podsumowując: ta książka to bałagan, który ma w sobie trochę piękna. Sama raczej jej nie polecę, ale może sprawdzicie czy Wam się spodoba?

Sad ghost story of lost teenage friendship and love.

There's been a car accident, and now Elk is reeling from the loss of best friend Mab. But Mab is still with her, a ghostly presence constantly, one she talks to. With Mab's brother and parents and Elk's family also grieving, having Mab with her is a comfort.

The narrative shows the start of the girls' friendship, the starting conflict over a potential new relationship, the party night that led to the accident, and the aftermath, all mixed together.

It's moving and very sad, for parents and teens themselves, the never-ending fallout from a few seconds of confusion and split-second decisions.

There's also a last act move that had me re-reading and re-assessing, making the story that much more harder-hitting.

Longlisted for the 2025 Carnegie, this may not be the most straightforward narrative or popular subject matter, but it is well written and relevant, moving and tragic.

Sięgając po tę powieść, wiedziałam, że nie będzie to łatwa lektura. Jednak kompletnie nie spodziewałam się czegoś takiego. Elk w krótkim czasie straciła dwie ważne osoby w swoim życiu i zmaga się z żałobą. Jej przyjaciółka nadal jest jednak obecna, choć w postaci ducha. Towarzyszy jej w tym trudnym czasie i przechodzi z nią przez kolejne dni. Autorka przedstawia wydarzenia sprzed tragicznego wypadku i ukazuje, jak układały się relacje oraz życie Elk, które było lekko skomplikowane.

Książka porusza bardzo ważne wątki terapii i żałoby, prowadząc je w wartościowy sposób. Nie jest to standardowa historia o stracie, lecz coś wyjątkowego, ponieważ Elk nadal ma kontakt z przyjaciółką, która odeszła. Autorka trochę zagmatwała sytuację pod sam koniec. Kompletnie nie spodziewałam się takiego obrotu wydarzeń, a przypomniało mi to książki, które ukazywały się, gdy byłam nastolatką. Dzięki temu poczułam ogromną nostalgię i uroniłam kilka łez.

Powieść jest bardzo krótka i idealna na lekturę w jeden wieczór. Uważam, że to doskonała długość, ponieważ gdyby była dłuższa, mogłaby być zbyt przekombinowana. Pojawia się także wątek romantyczny, trochę chaotyczny, ale istotny w kontekście ciągu przyczynowo-skutkowego. Równie ważny jest motyw przyjaźni, tak silnej, że nie jest w stanie jej zniszczyć nawet śmierć.

To naprawdę wyjątkowa książka, wypełniona ogromnym ładunkiem emocjonalnym. Żałoba i strata najważniejszych osób nigdy nie są prostym tematem, jednak autorka ujęła je w bardzo dobry sposób. Jeśli szukacie lektury, która Was zaskoczy i wzruszy, gorąco polecam tę historię.

Büyük beklentilerle başladığım ama tam beklediğimi bulamadığım bir kitaptı benim için. Öncelikle kitabın sonu beni ters köşe etmedi,aksine başlarından itibaren sonunu tahmin ettim. Evet konusu farklı ve hoş ayrıca okurken daha uzun olmasını da istiyorsunuz ama sanki anlatım kısaca kestirilmiş gibi. Keşke iki arkadaşın anlaşmazlığını değil de daha sevgi dolu anlarını okuyabilseydik. Bence içindeki aşk kısmı çok saf ve tatlıydı en beğendiğim kısımlar Elk ve France'in tatlı sahneleri oldu. Bana göre Mab fazlasıyla bencil bir karakterdi-zaten olaylar Mab'in bencilliği yüzüne gelişiyor fikrimce- Tam da bu nedenden sonunda hüngür hüngür ağlamam gerekirken Mab'e olan sinirim yüzünden duygulanma fırsatı bulamadım. Elk için çok üzüldüm ve döktüğüm gözyaşları sadece Elk içindi. Yine de beni hiç sıkmayan tatlı ve duygusal bir kitaptı. Anlatım daha etkili olsaydı hüngür hüngür ağlayabilirdim diye düşünüyorum. ❣️
