The road ahead is long and strewn with obstacles, but with their love as a shield, they must find a way to cross it together and claim their future in a world free of the beliefs that have no room in it…
Well , it doesn't qualify as a historical at all. Neither the language nor plot fit in. Smartly, the author hasn't mentioned the period hoping to get off scot free.
What a start and how wasted was it. I was really looking forward to see how she treats passive abuse but she doesn't. She just relegates it to the background. The plot twists and we have a group of misfits fighting for their place in society and against injustices meted out to them. Its all very one dimensional and nothing actually happens throughout. Its also all rosy rosy and everyone is just waiting to be shown the path to modern inclusive thinking. The high sugar content has left a very bitter taste.
I understand the need to bring in newer plots within the constraints the women faced 200 yrs back. But, one needs to keep to a bit of reality. Homosexuality was a culpable crime and if charged the only punishment was death. So,when the author describes Joss and Valerie it doesn't ring true. Further the arrangement is so unfair to Micheal. Just having an Ealr or a Duke doesn't qualify as a historical. Please note they exist even today - Prince William.Duke of Cambridge??
Personally I didn't like the book at all. Found it extremely sweet with very single dimensional people and no significant storyline.
Lady Cecilia was shunned by her parents and older sister when they decided to believe the lies of a rogue over her. She found love and refuge at the home of her father’s sister and acceptance and friendship with a small group of misfits who also suffered criticism and censure from the ton. Cil has decided that she will forego marriage and children rather than subjugate herself to any man because she does not believe the man exists who would love and treat her as a partner and an equal. She is determined to try to change the culture that dominates and oppresses women, the poor, and the misfits of society.
Lord Alexander has so far resisted his mother’s matchmaking efforts to saddle him with any of the vapid young women she has selected as suitable wives. He is enchanted by the young red-haired woman’s beauty and even more by her quick wit. She is not at all what he is used to encountering in young women of the ton and when he has an opportunity to spend time with the Lady Cecilia and her friends he cannot resist.
This is a beautiful, clean historical romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. I liked Cecilia’s determination and strength of character. Alexander is exactly the type of man that fit her personality and the group of misfits kept things interesting. I received an advance copy but my review is voluntary. Anyone who liked historical romances with a happy-ever-after ending will enjoy this story.
This is another wonderfully gripping clean and sweet story, with a plot that is quite unique in its conception, and touches on some taboo issues for the time, with a group of misfits who are portrayed beautifully, with the courage and determination to overcome their past misconceptions, emotional turmoil, and social detractors, to achieve their goals. The extended epilogue is a delightful glimpse into the friends on going lives beautifully. I read an ARC copy.
A Young lady who was sent away because of a Rake who was courting her sister but went after her too.But caught in a compromising position because of him.And the Ton and family blamed her.Well this turned to her advantage and what a fantastic read it was. This was an Arc read and i really recommend this story.
Another gripping and exciting novel from Leah. It is maybe a little long and convoluted but if you stick with it you will be rewarded. It takes you on a twisting road as you follow Lady Cecilia and her dashing Earl on their journey overcoming obstacles and prejudices towards a hopefully happy ending. I read an ARC copy and am leaving an honest and unbiased review.
This is a good story about a young woman that is the daughter of an Earl but outcast so she was helped by her Aunts and then a young Earl fell in love with her and her group of friends that accept each other find happiness and form family The characters are determined and realistic The extended epilogue completes the story with a happy ending
I totally loved this story of a collection of misfits who really understood they were not. These people decided that they would unite and make a better society by Giving understanding Through a journal Or newspaper. End there was a fairly decent romance involved too.
Like the quirky, unusual and interesting? I was thrilled by the oddities of behavior and thinking in this story. Really, an un-engagement party? Every page had something of interest to think about. The misfits in the story seem to be the only real people, but the ordinary people were just that-ordinary; the way people really were back then. Maybe even now! Read it.
Definitely a little different from other Regency stories. Lady Cecilia and her friends face society a little differently. I'll be honest that it made me uncomfortable at time, but that is exactly what the "misfits" faced daily. Leah Conolly's story would not let you put it aside and read later. You felt compelled to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great drama and romance with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
This can show that just because someone spread lies about you, you should never just lay down and not fight back! Love the strength these ladies show to right the wrong they faced!
The only reason for the low rating is because the plot and dialog are more modern than the period. The writing style is very enjoyable and entertaining. I would recommend this book to most everyone but a recency romance fanatic.
Everyone is entitled to be the best someone they can but we are imperfect beings in an imperfect world. Apart from Christ we can do nothing even our best is like a filthy rag. Changes are still happening.
It was interesting but not a theme I would chose again. This was for folks with a more progressive viewpoint. I did like the two main characters, Alexander and Cecilia.
This is a story is different than any other historical Regency romance books I've ever read bec it's not just about falling in love. It's about societies misfit as the judgment of the Ton. The Ton says if you are named in a scandal, no one cares if it's true. Cecilia and her friends are misfit by the judgement and rumors of the Ton. Cecilia and her friends scandal in this book are being kicked out of your family after the predator says you tried to deduce, illegible son, not wearing dresses, loving someone of the same sex, having affairs before marriage, the master getting the girl pregnant, not wanting to be forced into marriage without love. These misfits started an ongoing written journal about the unfairness of being rejected by society and that they are normal. And they met many others that were misfit too. I found all that interesting and it made me think, but I kept wanting them to get married already. It's still brilliant story and talked about very important things. Anybody that likes Regency Historical Romance w an important twist would like this story.
