When Alpha Zane goes missing, it’s up to me to find him. As a Beta Wolf and Kor’s second-in-command, leaving the compound is dangerous, but Zane is the one Alpha who has always been under my skin. And in spite of knowing we can never bond, I couldn’t live with myself if I couldn’t bring him home alive. Luckily, Zane’s brother has a plan. He’s concocted a formula which will allow me to pass as an Omega and steal the information from the city on who has been taking our Wolves and where.
What neither of us knows is whether or not I’ll be strong enough to rescue him as an Omega, and whether or not I’ll be able to come back.
Zane:
For months, my world has been nothing but blood and violence. I have long-since lost track of anything except the beast inside me, and obeying the commands of my human Masters. But when a new Wolf turns up and takes me from that place, I realize there’s more to who I am than just a monster. His scent is familiar—and yet entirely new. This Omega is different, and he just might be the only thing that can bring back the Wolf I once was.
Beast of Burden is the second book in a Dystopian MM Werewolf trilogy featuring A/B/O hierarchy with no mpreg, mild violence, and a happily ever after.
2.5 On the surface Rivers and Roads is a decent story and works just like its predecessor worked. In fact it follows the same structure: powerful alpha is kidnapped, he's tortured and experimented on, then gets rescued by an unlikely omega and while they hide in a safe house where due to an unexpected heat we get some knotting and afterwards back at their home compound after a bit more trouble they're mating. So far it's similar to a lot of other A/O stories but has a nice dystopian setup. Unfortunately if you care about details there's a lot to complain.
We still don't get more information about the world or how the cohabitation of wolves and humans is supposed to work. There's a hint that the main issue is with the US government while it's not that bad in Canada but then how are the wolves governed? Wasn't it a world wide war? Who signed the treaty anyway? We know that there are also other rebellion groups but they're not connected and don't make an effort to connect? What's the goal here aside from freeing the kidnapped wolves and personal revenge? There is so much tuned out I don't even know where to start with. That approach might have worked if the author went with the civilian-made-unlikely-hero topic but not when it's about a resistance lead by ex-military alphas. How competent are such alphas anyway when they only care about security, intelligence and reconnaissance after a direct assassination at the end of the book? How reliable are they when they promise their trusted second in command to move heaven and earth if he's caught by the humans but did nothing for the wolf who got caught while rescuing him?
Then there is the whole omegaverse concept or should I call it holey omegaverse concept because there's a lot that doesn't fit together? In the end it's only needed to have knotting sex but aside from that it's not needed for the story and makes no sense. The usage of genetic is even more useless. Actually it's magic potions disguised as genetic therapy. Strange that I'm able to accept humans shifting into wolves but drawing the line at genetic potions but it's as it is.
That leaves Zane and Orion's love story. Before Zane's kidnapping their secret feelings for each other was just a claim by the author I didn't really believed in, then there was this redundant rambling about Orion's beta-ness and after the heat their guilt trip about who abused whom, only back at Corland I finally made my peace with their love story.
I still like the dystopian background even in an A/O universe. There are some good ideas to add darkness and angst but they're singular and the setup is not really thought-out.
After reading Book 1, I was very thankful to be able to jump into Book 2. I actually liked this one a little bit more because the world and conflict were already established. In this installment, Alpha Zane had been kidnapped and the pack was anxious to get him back, especially Beta Orion.
Orion and Zane have been dancing around their feelings for each other. Neither one admitting what the other one feels. When Zane disappears, Orion volunteers to take an experimental drug that will alter his designation to that of an Omega. No one knows how this will affect him in the long run, but Orion is willing to do anything to get Zane back.
The romance between Zane and Orion is strong and we get to see them begin to bond though both feel like they're taking advantage of the situation. But the misunderstanding passes quickly, and they both admit what they want. We don't get to see how they fell for each other, but it is still believable.
I loved how action packed this book was and the set-up for the next one. I am very interested in what happened between Danyal (Zane's brother) and Mikal. The main conflict is also ramping up with Misha's brother announcing his political campaign. On to Book 3!
This installment picks up right where the previous book left off. Kor and his "pack" are regrouping and trying to come up with a new plan of attack. Unfortunately, early on, Zane is captured, and the story turns to his recovery. The preparations for this showed the story a bit, but once the plan was in motion, things picked up nicely. Orion (Kor's second) steps up to be the one to infiltrate and rescue Zane utilizing the drugs, etc. that the gang has been working on (with Mischa's help) that changes their DNA temporarily enabling them to go undetected.
If you read the first book, which you pretty much need to in order to understand what is going on in this world, you will remember that Zane and Orion are pretty close. They both had feelings, but Alphas and Betas aren't really supposed to be together, so they never pursued it. Through the course of the rescue, the drugs, etc. altered Orion's makeup and changed him (believed to be temporary) into an Omega. That becomes a non-issue eventually, as they have much more important things to be worrying about in the grand scheme of things.
Life is short, and all of that, especially when you're in the middle of a race war and fight for the ability to exist, let alone to do so freely. This story is getting more interesting as it goes. We still don't fully understand all of the intricacies of what is going on with the humans and their plans, the wolves who appear to be working with them, etc. There is enough to keep the pages turning and a feeling that all will be revealed in time. I'm really enjoying this story and just like when I finished the first book, I was ready to jump into the next. Thankfully, Ms. Millar doesn't make us wait too long. I definitely recommend this interesting and suspenseful shifter story.
Good second book of the series. You will need to have read the first book before starting this one as the storyline continues on from the previous book.
Again we see a different pairing, in the first one we had a blind alpha and human omega and in this one we have an alpha and a beta, which is another pairing we often don't see, although Orion is actually closer to an alpha in my mind with the way he acts. The characters also are good at having their own minds. We see the guys both disagree with Kor at the start but at the same time back him with his decision.
I liked Orion and his determination to do whatever he had to to save Zane. I was sad about Bryn's outcome but that's what happens. I liked Zane and Orion together, both were determined to make sure they weren't;t taking advantage of the other and didn't; take too long to actually discuss it and not let it fester.
Can't wait for the next in the series
***Arc provided by GRR. This is my honest and voluntary review***
I loved this book and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it! Although I haven't read book one,I didn't find it hard to get into this brilliant story, which grabbed my attention straight from the beginning. I don't want to give spoilers for this book,I want to urge readers to dive in and immerse themselves in this brilliant story! I received an ARC copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
When I started this series, I figured it would be pretty good. I mean---shifters, A/B/O, dystopian society, war? What's not to like? This second installment, featuring Zane and Orion, was just mind blowing! The tension, the yearning before Orion volunteered to rescue Zane and gather Intel, the arc of the bond between them, and the deep thought processing of knowing themselves as individual wolves, and their deeper understanding of the differences of wolves and humans surrounding them, good, and evil. It was a definite page Turner and I will be picking up this book again & again! I cannot wait for the next installment! This ARC was provided for an honest review.
really sorry, but the more I read this more annoyed I got and that’s not going to have a good outcome, so instead I’m going to be putting this down.
I’m just really and truly sad about this. Can't tell you how much this saddens me but I will be looking closely at anything else this author write as clearly this series just isn't for me, though I'm sure other will like it, at least I have high hopes they do
Beast of burden is absolutely amazing. We continue in this book of a war brewing between the humans and the wolves.
When Zane is take by the human, Orion is not going to let the one he loves go. He pulls out all the stops to get to him or die trying.
From the start of this book, i found it to be high action. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next book as we made one step closer to taking down those hurting the Wolves.
Orion and Zane went through some seriously dark patches throughout this book, but it was worth it to see the way their romance unfolded. Because this book picks up right where the previous story left off, it doesn't work as a standalone. Even though I've read the first book in this series it still took me a little while to wrap my head around where things stand in this universe. I'd forgotten just how dystopian the current state of affairs was, and it was genuinely horrifying to read about some of the scientific experiments being performed on Wolves and humans alike. Though this story had romantic elements, there's no way I can talk about it without diving into the trauma these characters endured. Ariel Millar didn't hold back at all with these men, and while it made their journey feel much more high-stakes and exciting, it was also terrifying to know that at any time these people could end up captured, seriously injured, or dead. Every rescue mission left a sense of dread in my heart, because when someone went missing they never turned up unharmed. To a large extent, Zane and Orion's romance wouldn't have even happened had it not been for the life-or-death scenario they ended up in, and I felt torn between happiness that there was a catalyst for their confession and wishing that they'd never had to get to that desperate place at all. Their connection was much more magnetic than I'd anticipated, and I won't deny that I loved how passionate they were in exploring each other's bodies. Even with all the chaos and uncertainty around them, Zane and Orion managed to form a strong bond, based not just on a fleeting impulse but on very real feelings. The time they spent recovering in Canada was an unexpectedly refreshing break from the chaotic rest of the story, and while I knew it couldn't last, it made me feel even closer to the two of them. I don't know how I feel about the direction this series is going, mainly because I'm too scared to hope that things will work out the way I want them to, but I'm confident that Zane and Orion ended up exactly where they should be--in each other's arms.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
I’m a little torn with this book and series, so rating and reviewing the books makes me feel a bit bipolar.
I love this author’s books, and have always enjoyed her writing. She has a distinct style with a specific formula she follows for each book. Yes, you can predict the angst, the challenges, the doubts, etc. almost from page 1, but the books still turn out so good!
But with a new penname, and a cross into paranormal, I really hoped we’d see a different approach to the book. The overarching storyline and the world building are awesome. I love the idea of what the world looked like after shifters became common knowledge, and how humans reacted, and the different schemes each side have put into play. However, the story of Zane and Orion was, unfortunately, fairly predictable. The same unrequited love – because both characters apparently can’t tell each other anything, but everyone else knows they’re in love but won’t say anything either – and the same angst when the relationship doesn’t start off perfectly, the same doubts if the relationship will continue, the same relief at the end.
If you’ve never read the entire library by this author, you’ll likely love this book and the first book. They are both well written with engaging stories and you’ll like the characters. If you have read everything she’s written, you’ll either still love the book or you’ll wish it felt a little different since it’s a bit dystopian and very paranormal.
Either way, it’s a good read. Rated it 4 stars, even though my opinion above might make you think I would rate it lower. I just wanted more, but she did not do a bad job – at all – in writing this book.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is one of those paranormal romances that grabs you from the beginning and draws you into a whole new world. After starting this book, I struggled to put it down until I'd finished the entire thing! The dystopian world was clearly described and, despite not having read book 1, I was very quickly immersed in the conflict-filled world of human vs wolf. Zane and Orion's connection was teased at until, suddenly, Zane is taken and it falls to Orion to rescue him. Their connection was strong and I loved how it built up throughout the book. I also enjoyed how the author played with the idea of Orion being an omega / beta and what impact this had on their relationship. There was a brilliant balance of action, steamy scenes and heartfelt moments which made me fall in love with both of them all the more. While I would say the book gives them a happy ending in terms of how it leaves them together, it is very much part of a series and it is very clear that the conflict between human and wolf is not over so it'll be interesting to see how this couple feature in upcoming books. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this book to others and am looking forward to more from this author in the future!
Let me start by saying this series is not for the faint of heart. It will grab hold of you, twist and squeeze, and just when you think it’s done, start all over again. I freaking LOVE it, especially how each couple finds their own HEA amidst the chaos—sometimes by the tips of their claws but they still find it—but I. Have. To. Know. How. It. Ends. The angst of waiting for the final resolution is causing me to go gray. I guess that’s what colors are for.
“We were Alpha and Beta—two Wolves that were never meant to mate, but it was like he was carved into a shape that fit against my own more perfect than anyone else had ever been.” Gah, these two, they hold my battered yet beating heart in their hands. Zane’s story tore my heart to shreds and Orion’s quest to save him smashed them even further. What put me back together and made me whole was their unshakable connection and drive to care for one another, their constant and deep love, their burning, out-of-this-world intense chemistry and the peace they find together. Orion and Zane dazzle the senses as does this magnificent world that Ariel Millar has meticulously built. Hang on to everything when you read, it’s one wild, amazing ride and it’s not over yet.
I want to preface this by saying that I didn’t read the first book, so I didn’t have the back story. I would have preferred it if the author had taken a paragraph or two to sum up book 1 in the beginning of this book, instead of leaving this reader floundering putting the pieces together.
That aside. This book was interesting but I just didn’t really feel anything for either of the main characters. Zane was pretty one-dimensional and even in most of the love scenes was kinda bland. Orion had a bit more passion, but still was pretty…subdued. I wanted big declarations of love and biting in the throes of passion, not “oh let’s wait until we’re back home.” I wasn’t feeling the love between them.
All the political stuff was REALLY hard to follow, especially not having the benefit of a summary of the previous story or the history of human-wolf relations.
If you want a better series with some of the same elements, check out Irresistible Omegas by Nora Phoenix!
Unfortunately, I’m not into it enough that I will even continue to read the next one in the series. Overall, the writer is good, just didn’t do it for me.
These characters go through a lot, and there is not a single moment of this book that is an easy read. There are some beautiful ones, some intense, heartbreakingly pure demonstrations of love, romantic, filial, and platonic, but this is a story about a war, one with kidnappings, torture, and extreme genetic modifications, so prepare to spend a lot of time with your heart in your throat, and for even the good moments to be decidedly bittersweet. Orion and Zane are both strong characters who’ve been through A LOT and have to go through more, so it’s great that they get each other to lean on. Be warned, however, that by the time they get their HFN (I’m not calling this an HEA, because settled as they may be, everything else in their world is incredibly uncertain) there are still major plot threads left to unravel with the larger plot of the series, including a beloved character is missing. An engrossing novel in an engrossing series, but be warned— there’s a lot of bleakness here, and it’s not for the faint of heart.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Zane is a Wolf who has fought in the previous war, he fought alongside Orion and Kor. He's seen wolves broken, bruised, dead, and alive. He thought he saw it all. All of the torture that humans could inflict on his kind but he was wrong. They were so much worse than he originally thought. How he found that out? They captured him and turned him into their new lab experiment, they stripped him of his humanity. Everything that makes him human they tried to take away for him. They turned him into an animal that only craves blood and death. The humans who captured him thought they achieved in turning him into a complete animal. They were wrong.
Orion is a beta wolf. The Alpha's second in command. When Kor tells him about Danyal's experiment in trying to manipulate wolf DNA he isn't on board with that plan at all. Then Zane gets captured and everything changes.. Orion sets off on a rescue mission not knowing what the end result will be, but willing to risk it anyway.
My thoughts on the story is this: I loved it so much! The complexity of characters was brilliant! The world building is great as well, it felt as though I could picture where they were throughout the whole story. I loved how Orion is so close with Kor, how they're not afraid to share their emotions with each other. I also enjoyed how E.M. wrote about the relationships between Zane and his siblings, I really thought that was great. There was never really a character that showed up and didn't play a part in the telling of this story.
My favorite part of this book happened about halfway through. I would disclose what that part is but then it would spoil it for you! I'm really intrigued by this series and I'm so looking forward for more installments!
Also, fair warning, you might want to have a box of tissues handy. I almost cried when Orion found Bryn. And then more when Bryn didn't survive. I really hope all of the captured Wolves get rescued at some point! I guess that means I will just have to keep reading so I can find out if that happens.
I highly recommend you get this. You won't regret it. ( I want to say that you can not read this book as a standalone! You must read what has come before! ) *I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
Beast of Burden is the second book in the Carpe Noctem series by Ariel Millar (aka E.M. Lindsey). It picks up in the aftermath of the first story, and we quickly catch up with how things have been progressing. Some things have improved, like their living conditions, but it is also clear that the danger is growing and the chances of a peaceful resolution are slim.
The main focus of this story is on Zane’s rescue and the subsequent relationship that develops between him and Orion. The men have both had feelings for one another, but know that an Alpha and Beta wolf aren’t supposed to mix. Yet when things are falling apart around them, it is the impetus these men need to overcome that worry and act on the feelings they have for one another. There is a comfort between Zane and Orion that is really lovely, even as they are in this impossible and crazy situation.
The wars between the humans and the wolves is getting worse. The humans have started using more and more dirty tactics and it seems that there are traitor amongst the wolves. When Zane is captured and tortured the pack does not know who to trust. Orion knows that he is the only one who can bring Zane home. The two have never acted on their feelings for each other but Orion does know he is Zane’s only hope. Orion does not know what he will find but he will not give up until he finds Zane.
This is an interesting world and story. The story is full of politics and subterfuge with the humans using any means possible to capture and torture wolves. The focus leans more on that part than the bond between the two main characters. Orion and Zane’s relationship is still a big part of the story, but it is part of the big plot of the war. Zane and Orion are good together, but I did not get lost in their story. I felt as if this was a slow-moving book and while it is an interesting concept I just did not really get into the plot as a whole.
After finishing the first book in this series, I was eagerly awaiting the second instalment. Well, I wasn’t disappointed at all! It picks up right where book one ends, and as such, won’t really work as a stand-alone. This time we get to learn more about beta, Orion, and alpha, Zane. And oh boy, do these two have a rough time. There is a lot of pain and trauma experienced, and it’s incredibly heartbreaking at times. But what the author does well is balance the build up of the romance and the developing emotional connection between the MCs. Their love is well-paced and, although stemming from Zane’s capture, it’s unquestionably based on very real feelings. I loved that, once again, the MCs dynamic is unique and the impact of that is not at all glossed over.
I will also say to prepare yourself for a happy ending for the couple, but high anticipation of further conflict before the overarching war is (hopefully) resolved.
This has been my lucky month for finding books with unique takes on A/B/O relationships and this one is a stunner. I don't want to give anything away that isn't in the blurb, but just know that there are people here who genuinely need their comeuppance arrayed against Orion and Zane. There are both good and bad uses made of DNA manipulation and while Orion's mission is a success, it opens up a whole new world of issues for his relationship with Zane and going forward, for things that will probably be done again in this world both for good and ill. You can't put the genie of science back in the bottle once it's out there. Personally, how does a beta who never expected to be able to mate/bond with an alpha he cares for handle it when that alpha now only recognizes him as an omega? Can these two get back to who they were, do they want to in every way? So many fascinating questions and an HEA. Cannot wait to see where this series goes from here.
Zane is an alpha high in the pack, who is sent to check on downed power lines. When he arrives, he's taken and experimented on by humans. He's about to lose all of his humanity when Orion arrives and rescues him. Orion is a beta and second in command of their pack. When he finds out that Zane is taken, he volunteers to take an experimental drug (that will temporarily make him exhibit Omega features) so he can infiltrate the human world and get the information on where Zane is being held.
I really liked this book. I liked the story and the chemistry between Zane and Orion. I liked the twist on how the drug worked on Orion. I think some things would've been more clear if I had read book one first, but it wasn't that hard to catch up. I didn't like that the baddie wasn't exposed and punished and that Kor and Misha (couple from book one) had to go into hiding. Otherwise it's an easy read that kept me engaged.
So I did like this second book for the series. I think I liked the first book a little more. It had more action maybe . This one was a good interaction between friends Orion (who is a beta) and Zane (an Alpha). Orion is injected with the omega serum and he has attributes of an omega for a while. It brings Zane and.Orion together. They'd always had feeling for each other but never acted upon them until now. I love the story arch. Just I think this book could have been better had we lived through more of the time Zane was captive. It would give more.of.an idea how brutal it was. We hear it is brutal but no necessarily what happened to him. Maybe itd been a bit hotter too if Zane hadn't had any idea of his attraction for Orion. Friends to lovers is a great trope but even better when it's sort of a surprise to them. It felt expected here. Idk maybe it's just me. At any rate, I love the series and look forward to next book!!
OK, before I say what I am going to say, remember that I thoroughly enjoyed the story! Now, take book one and exchange the MC's names with Zane and Orion and that is book two. Yes, there are a few switch-ups but it would appear that this series is going to be more of a cookie-cutter style than I was expecting.
But, let's be honest here! When have I ever NOT been a sucker for "the next book" in a series? It is what it is... *sigh* LOL!!!
So, now I move on to Before the Storm so that I can finally find out what all the angst is that has been keeping Danyal and Mikael apart for all these years... it should be interesting!
Also, this is being presented as a trilogy, so I am hoping to get the whole "world at peace" wrap-up that I want. We shall see...
This was a fantastic follow up/second book to the Carpe Noctem series! Zane, an Alpha has been taken and Orion a Beta goes in to get him back. I freakin love the overall story line, the world building is phenomenal!! I have gotten invested in the characters! Kor and Misha from Cold Hard Ground and now Zane and Orion. I freakin love the connection and chemistry these couples possess, their fight and commitment to be together. I don’t feel this series is for the faint of heart. The dystopian vibe and hopelessness continued to tug at my heart, left me on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happen next. I cannot wait for the next book in the series! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.
Finally it is time for our brave Alpha Orion to be rescued and find some meant to be love in the process! Zane is just the Beta to become an undercover Omega to save him! This installment brings us further into a very complex dystopian world with all of the horrible scientific experiments. This one is none stop and just the right length to draw you in and keep you reading! It is a tougher tale of romance so you will have to read to find out how Orion and Zane pull through it all! It is a steamy romance of circumstances finally bringing the two of them together. Cannot wait for the next book! I received an ARC of this book and I recommend reading the series from the start as it is an overlying theme with new couples each book!
Book 2 takes us deeper into the new phase of the war between humans and Wolves, though most of this story is centered around the relationship between Kor & Orion. The war developments happen mostly toward the end, but they are VERY interesting and I am still much invested in this series!!
Book 2 gives us another unusual mating {spoiler: I like that}. In book 1 we saw an alpha mated to a human/omega hybrid and book 2 gives us Kor & Orion. Kor is an alpha and Orion a beta, though many consider him strong enough to be an alpha. Even more unusual is that Orion becomes a beta/omega hybrid. I love when Kor says [“… I don’t care if you had 9 arms, I’d still only want you …”] #𝙨𝙬𝙤𝙤𝙣
I really loved the premise of this story and with its synopsis I thought I could jump in having not read book one. I wasn't exactly correct in that assumption. There were politics, interactions, details, and a bit of history that was missing and wasn't even recapped in book two to give a better foundation before the rescue plan was enacted.
Overall I felt the story lacked punch. The becoming a beast bit was downplayed too much for my liking, the passion was muted, confessions were hard-won but felt tame...all of it came together for a kind of okay story with a good direction in an interesting world, but none of it came together with a compelling need to read more. I just wanted more in every aspect of the story.
This plot driven story delves into a society ripped apart by war. Political aspirations, behind the scenes rumors and misinformation, and flat out lies by the opposition. In the midst of the chaos, one Alpha wolf comes home. Rescued from a secret lab where humans are attempting to genetically alter ‘the enemy,’ General Zane is a mess. Mostly feral and barely able to keep his humanity, Orion, a Beta wolf, rescues him. To slip under the radar around humans he has taken a highly experimental drug that temporarily changes him from a warrior Beta to a much left threatening Omega. Sparks fly, the plot thickens, and two wolves get a happy for now ending although the world is on the brink of another war.
DNF. The start was interesting enough with Zane being kidnapped and Orion having to go rescue him. But after the rescue things go downhill. I expected more trauma-bonding/trauma recovery like the last book but what I got just felt like a contrived way to get these 2 characters to confess their feelings and introduce a key plot item. The world-building was weak too. 1 year after the end of the last book, the resistance seems to have made little to no progress. What are the alphas doing? I thought Kane was the key to getting organized and rescuing more of the wolves imprisoned in the labs? Everyone in the leadership position comes off as very incompetent and selfish, only bothering to do anything when someone important's life is at stake.
Loved this second installment in the Carpe Noctem series.
The world building is excellent, the characters are engaging and memorable and I'm so invested in the series story, which is powerful and meaningful.
There is a lot happening in this book, but it manages to stay on the right side of overwhelming, so I never got confused or felt like it was all too much.
I love the theme of "what makes us human?" that is explored so beautifully in this series, and that concept it definitely present in a big way in Beast of Burden.
I'm excited to see what comes next.
I received a copy of this book from the author and I have chosen to leave an honest review.
This series just keeps getting better and better, as we have seen in the second book in the Carpe Noctum series, is was a fast reading well written book totally an enjoyable read. We have moved above ground into our own city, but people, wolf and human are still dissapearing so when Zane an Alpha and member of the council goes missing I have no problem stepping up and doing whatever it takes to get him back, even being an experimental omega. Now to rescue him, keep him safe and get him back home without losing my heart along the way because of all of the wolves I know he's always been the one I want.
