My family was my one vulnerable spot, and the monsters in the lab knew exactly how to use that against me. I might have been protected if I was bonded, but I’ve only spent one heat with an Alpha, and the morning after, he was gone. I can live without a mate, but I can’t live without my family, and I won’t lose hope that someone is coming for me.
Of course, coming up with a plan of escape is the easy part. The difficult part is deciding whether or not the human in the cell with me is telling the truth about her pregnancy—because Wolves can’t breed with humans…can they? But she’s not like any other human I’ve met, and if she’s telling the truth, the baby inside her belongs to our cause. My choices are simple, but they’re not easy: stay and protect her and hope a rescue is on the way, or fight my way out and try to explain to Kor Titus why I let his child die.
Mikael:
My job was simple: provide the voice of reason on the Alpha Council so no one gained more power than anyone else. And it remained that way until the humans managed to fracture our numbers. And worst of all, the only Omega I have ever met to make my heart pound has gone missing.
Danyal is more than just a geneticist dedicated to our cause. He’s also the one Omega I shared a heat with decades ago. Danyal doesn’t seem to remember our night, and it’s not something I’m eager to bring up again, but I will never forget the way I wanted him. And now that his life is in danger, it’s all I can do to keep the course and not tear the planet apart. I’m not sure what I expect to find when I finally catch his scent, but I know I’m not leaving until he’s safe in my arms.
Before the Storm is the third book in a Dystopian MM Werewolf trilogy featuring A/B/O hierarchy with no mpreg, mild violence, and a happily ever after.
Well, hell! I truly thought this was the last book in this series... IT'S NOT... grrr
I mean, I am glad that sometime in the future, in mid-2023, we will finally get the answers we so deserve, but... WAITING is not my strong suit!
The fact that I almost took a star off just for the wait, but didn't, should show you that I am a better person than that. At least that is what I keep telling myself as I type this... all bullshi*t if you ask me! *snort* LOL!!!
As for the story itself, I liked the way the story flowed in and out of the first and second story and I didn't really have a problem keeping track of who was where and what they were doing. Seeing two men sit down and actually try to have a conversation about their feelings always fascinates me, so kudos to Danyal and Mikael for making the effort. There wasn't always a success, but they gave us hope!
As is everyone else, I am curious to see what twists and turns this last book will present to us. So I will do my best to work on my "waiting" skills and go read some OTHER great books! *grin*
Before the Storm is the third book in Ariel Millar’s excellent dystopian, omegaverse Carpe Noctem series. The series follows one long story about the wolves fighting to save themselves from both the corrupt wolf and human governments. While each installment thus far features a new couple, you will want to read these in order for the full story.
Danyal has been a prominent character in the first two books as the wolves’ geneticist, so it was great to see his story. There is a nice lovers reunited element here as Danyal and Mikael connected for one passionate night years ago. While a fragile bond formed between them, Mikael cut it off until it withered out of fear of getting involved again. Now, things are complicated as Danyal assumes Mikael is just not interested in him, while Mikael thinks Danyal doesn’t remember their night together after being in the throes of heat. It takes them a while to sort out the misunderstanding, and I worried upon reading the blurb that this would be frustrating, but it turns out to be very smooth.
Another great book in a great series. Danyal and Mikael's story was just as good as the other two stories and I enjoyed reading about their journey. What I loved about Danyal was that he didn't just wait around for others to save him but he got active and tried saving his own skin. He didn't despair but looked after the other. And Mikael was a truly bad-ass alpha with a big heart. I also loved the people he met on his way, how he was trying to trust where hope seemed lost.
🤔⭐️ 3,5 I continue to admit how much this series surprised me, it happened to me by chance, it was enjoyable and kept me glued to the saga since the first book. Let me start by saying that I have given 5 stars in previous books, but in this case there are some notes that I would like to express.. I found the initial part where the two main characters were separated almost more interesting than the moment in which they reunited, at least in the initial part thanks to Danyal we finally get to know the enemy ( both father and son) the author still manages to describe the situation in a simple way, without taking it too long (fortunately otherwise we would have only had 20% of the story on the protagonists and I already feel like I have read little about them). I knew I would like the character of Danyal, on the contrary I felt bored by that of Mikael, a general who is mentioned half a time only in the first book, there is little tension between the two "lovers" when they finally find each other again, in other words it seems that Mikael is present in the saga only to be Danyal's partner, he didn't have any role that we could have appreciated and even as Danyal's lover he is not up to par for me, although the topic about his dead partner is interesting, I feel that Mikael has no depth in him. I found Danyal's strength right in wanting to wait and keep his distance from the general (I'm talking about when they find themselves alone in the caves) after years of being ignored, which is why I didn't appreciate much that a few pages later when they arrive at the safe place, Danyal goes into heat and they easily mate. The author always leaves me with that desire to know more about the characters, as if the end of the book is actually the beginning of the true love story between the protagonists which I however will not read. Having said that, I'm sorry that the wait for the final book is so long, I hope it's worth it and I have doubts about who the next protagonists could be... maybe Ivan and Arturo? It would be interesting to read about an Alpha with a human, but a man who stands up to an alpha, who clashes with him mentally creating tension and passion. I feel that there are still so many things and love stories that the author could tell about this world, I'm sorry that this chapter is the last of the saga.
I don't quite know how to form my thoughts into words about this book. This i think was by far my favorite in the whole series so far. Danyal's character has intrigued from the very beginning, I was always curious about him, and why he was so skittish when it came to hear talk. Now I know why, and I understand why he was like that. When I read that scene I wanted to hate Mikael... But then getting his perspective, I couldn't bring myself to hate him. He was hurting and scared, and instead of staying he ran.
I loved this book! We, as readers, got so much more information in this installment! The overarching plot line that concurs throughout these books is so magnificent. Just when you think one mystery is solved another one pops back up in its place. I want to tell you about the things that happened in this story, but I can't, because it would completely spoil the story for you. All I can say is be prepared for the twists and turns that are very prevalent in this book, you'll feel like you are having whiplash with all of those turns. More characters to grab at your heart strings, more characters though you thought were evil, were merely a victim themselves...
I really hope we get more information about Ivan in the next book, I feel like his character could deserve redemption. And I need to know what happens with the Wolves that were rescued from the compound! There is so much I need to know!! I love this series because with each book, and each set of characters, I yearn for the next book, and the book after that.
This book is very well written, with immaculate detail, fantastic characters, and an amazing plot!!
I really enjoyed 'seeing' Mikael's and Danyal's relationship grow and progress throughout their time together.
Nadya, Ivan, Eduardo, Mari, Bryn... So many new characters that we need to know more about!
I highly recommend you get these books yourselves. Please note. This is NOT a STANDALONE. You must read what has come before in order to read this book.
* I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
Despite the horrific genetics experiments and heartbreaking reveals in this story, Danyal and Mikael's romance was my favorite of the series so far. I loved the second-chance nature of their relationship, and though initially I was angry at the way Mikael ignored Danyal, understanding his background helped put a lot into perspective. I didn't necessarily agree with his decision to shut Danyal out, but when Danyal's safety was at risk, Mikael proved that he cared enough to risk anything to rescue him. My heart wouldn't stop pounding during the entirely of said rescue mission, both because I was unsure if they could pull it off and because I was afraid of what Danyal would have to do to keep himself and Mari safe in the meantime. In a lot of ways, this story was tamer than the previous books in this series, with less graphic violence and instead threats of cruelty if orders weren't followed. It was honestly a huge relief to see Danyal and Mikael make it out relatively unscathed--though their emotional trauma was heavy. I was pleasantly surprised by how much Danyal and Mikael's romance blossomed during their stress-filled escape. I was never fully able to let go of the fear that they could be captured, but it was undeniably sweet to see the way they gravitated towards each other for comfort. Their chemistry was intoxicating, and though they didn't get to indulge much, those moments they did spend together were a bliss-filled distraction from the rest of the universe. Mikael and Danyal's story may have ended before the villians of this series could be brought to justice, but their romance came to a satisfyingly happy ending that left me secure in the knowledge that they'd worked through their issues and would stick together for the long haul.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
Another action-packed installment in the Beasts of Burden series. This book focused on Danyal (Zane's brother and the Omega geneticist) being rescued by his one-time lover Mikael. During Danyal's first heat, Mikael met him, spent one night with him, left, and let the fragile bond break between them. From that moment on, Danyal decided that he would never make himself vulnerable again. It became even worse when Mikael joined the council and pretended that he didn't even remember Danyal.
I really loved Danyal. So often, in the ABO universe, omegas are weak and unable to do anything but submit to alphas. But Danyal was intelligent, strong willed, and willing to do what it took to get as many wolves to safety as possible. He was a bad-ass character.
However, I did not understand Mikael at all. He lamented the fact that he had let Danyal go and made him believe that he didn't remember him. He blamed the fact he'd lost his first mate and that he just wasn't in a place to love anyone else. But when he was actually with Danyal, it took him forever to be open and honest with him. It drove me nuts. Then he said he would accept whatever decision Danyal made.
"You wouldn't fight for me?" "Have I earned the right to do that?" he asked. My eyes narrowed. "Have you earned the right not to?"
I was cheering for Danyal so much after that exchange. He deserved someone who would fight for him. I think Mikael's attitude brought this down for me just a little.
Lots of interesting developments in this one with Mari and Delilah, Ivan, and Arturo. I'm am really interested in seeing where this will go.
Wow, I love, love the unique and unexpected dynamics of these shifters. Yes, they have the sizzling A/B/O chemistry but Ariel Millar throws in a twist with each pair that never fails to stun me. I especially liked how Danyal is portrayed. Not only is his connection with Mikael intense, it’s powerful in the very way it affects Danyal, who btw I think deserves a seat at the Alpha Council for his intelligence and contributions. Now Mikail, I really liked him and he won me over, but whoo, he had his jerky moments and I wanted to smack him for them. I understood his reasons but he’s lucky his mate is Danyal. “He was a second heart, right alongside mine, quietly beating against the inside of my ribs. And he would always be there. This time, there was no letting go. He was mine. My Alpha.” Gah, from the very beginning, I could feel and taste their yearning, their passion, their angst and their love and as these two reconnected it just cemented them into my heart. Potent chemistry, exceptional suspense, I am craving the next book and will most likely need to comfort myself with multiple rereads until it’s available as I MUST know how it’s all going to end.
This is just such an exceptional Omegaverse/Shifter series, it's so different to most that I've read.
Before The Storm is a second chance romance, of sorts, as the MC's had a brief night together but Mikael did a runner and has ignored Danyal since they came back into each other's lives.
I love the way the author has dealt with the hurt Danyal feels, allowing him to be angry and distrustful within the bounds of their mate bond. Instalove often bothers me, even in shifter romance where it's more prevalent, but it's just done so well here. It's more like insta-bond, with room to grow.
Even though Danyal is the one needing rescue, I think both MC's are strong and supportive. I love their chemistry together, and I especially love all the themes touched upon in this book: consent, forgiveness, feeling different and accepting your uniqueness.
I received a copy of this book from the author and I have chosen to leave an honest review.
This series always delivers on the painful and heartbreaking reveals, and it’s no different for Danyal and Mikael. Despite the horrific events they have to endure, including capture and experimental torture, their romance is tender and heartachingly beautiful. Each couple has had their own spin, and I think Danyal and Mikael hit me even harder than the others due to the second chance nature of their relationship. I went from being angry to the way Mikael treated Danyal, to completely in love with him as he puts everything into rescuing Danyal. This suspense holds throughout the book, the moments when they are reconnecting providing passion, angst, and intense emotional intimacy to balance it out. Danyal deserves the world and I’m so glad we’re left with the promise that they are stronger than ever. Although a satisfying end for Danyal and Mikael, it’s not the end for this series. I need to see everything turn out okay!
Please don’t read this book if you haven’t read the first two. It is NOT a standalone. Also please be aware of any triggers you may have because this is a dark series. Danyal has been taken prisoner and the only one who can go after him is Mikael. Not gonna give too much detail here because it would contain spoilers. Mikael has a lot to make up for after how he has acted in the past and he just wants a chance to make things better. Danyal is stronger than his captors believe though and is biding his time in captivity until he gets his chance at freedom. There is an HFN but this series is not done. I believe there is one more book coming. Don’t let that stop you from reading these though. The characters are amazing and the overall story will pull you in. This isn’t over and there is a storm coming. One the wolves are ready to fight.
This is a really well done series, with great characters and a rich and creative dystopian setting. I love all the political maneuvering going on, it’s very engrossing with plenty of intrigue. This is Danyal and Mikael’s story, and it is a really good one. These two spent one night together before going their separate ways, and have a lot to work through to get their second chance. I loved the emotion, the hurt feelings, and the misunderstandings they must deal with in order to move forward together. Danyal and Mikael are also such strong and layered characters which is one of my favorite things in this series. As a reader, you really get to be invested in their struggles. Definitely looking forward to read the next book!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is such an excellent and exciting series! This author did an amazing job building this world and bringing these characters to life! I went through all three books amazingly fast they were so captivating! This was Danyal and Mikael’s story and it definitely had some surprises in it! All these characters just pull at your heart for everything they have to go through. Such an amazing series but I would definitely recommend reading in order to get the most enjoyment. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for more! Amazing series that I very highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book
We finally got Danyal’s story. Danyal is a geneticist and an Omega. He shares his one and only heat with an Alpha who left him without telling him his name. Mikael regrets that to this day. When Danyal is kidnapped, Mikael will go to the ends of the earth to find him. I loved every thing about this story! Overall this was a fantastic story, really well written, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
Danyal and Mikael met a long time ago and a slight bond was started and lost. When Danyal is grabbed and taken Mikael is ready to go and get him. Rescued and dealing with feelings while on the run isn't the easiest. So many interesting things happen in this story and new things are learned. The war is just getting started with new players and a child that no one thought could be born. This is not a standalone and should be read in order. I can't wait for the next book
I never want this series to end. Seriously at the top of my A/B/O favorites(top of general book favs to be honest) - EM Lindsey’s world building, emotional development and the journey they take us on is phenomenal. Danyal and Mikaela’s story is interwoven with books 1 & 2 (definitely a series that you have to read all of them!) and is full of hope, loss and forgiveness. The heat is absolutely off the charts, the intrigue never lets you go and the writing is stellar. I want more!!
The book is intense and fits the series perfectly! I love the world the author has created and the MCs were so well created! The story itself had me hooked from the get go and I must honestly say this series is among my all time favorites. Not only is the overall idea awesome, but the skill behind the writing in a quality on its own.
Intense love emotions and interesting side characters make this such an entertaining book the dynamics between the main characters are so good Excellent installment in this series i can’t sit for the next one
For me, I felt this was the best of the series so far. Danyal was an interesting character and had enough appearances in the previous books in the series that I was already invested in him. The romance between Danyal and Mikael was well done and the story was captivating.
This might just be my favourite book and couple of the series. Totally thought this was the last book in the series but just read a review that said there’s gonna be a fourth so fingers crossed its Ivan’s story.
Interesting. I enjoyed Danyal and Mikael’s story, but I was anticipating the author wrapping everything up in this third novel. Well, that didn’t happen, so now I’ll have to wait to see what’s going to happen. Not sure how I feel about that, tbh.
