Your brain is both your greatest cheerleader and your worst enemy; it's just a matter of taking action and learning (and unlearning) how to unlock the very best version of you. This is your personal guide to a mindset renovation, because your best life is closer than you think.
Recently I listened to 'Be Bold' by Alexis Fernandez as an audiobook on BorrowBox and loved it! I don't often read self help/self development books as I often find them to be really similar and repetitive, but I think 'Be Bold' had some great advice and was definitely worth the read! I have also recently started listening to Alexis's podcast 'DYFM' which has definitely touched on a lot of the advice in the book already, but I would still recommend both of them!
I absolutely loved this book. It had everything I needed in a book, from tough love to general advice to help me get through my 20's. Would recommend to anyone and everyone!
I really enjoyed this book. Alexis' podcasts are fabulous and her no BS attitude is what captured my attention. I would say there are some aspects to this book which are not traditional to self help books but I'd suggest this would be suitable for younger (20-35 year olds) rather than the older crowd. I am 31 and found it a great read but a lot of it has been written before (without the amazing sarcasm) In terms of topics covered, this touches on several different things rather than just one i.e discipline or habits. The quality of the book it just gorgeous and as usual there is work to do throughout to get the most out of it. Would recommend!
It was an easy read but is important to note that you’ll need a journal on hand to jot notes along the way as it is a proactive self help book and you will not get out all the potential this guide brings without writing in a journal
It's one of those books you have to read at the right time to be open-minded enough to listen to what Alexis has to offer. It's one of those books that you can always go back to revisit when you need clarity in your life.
I chose this book because I have always really enjoyed Alexis's podcast. I started listening to her when she only had 2 episodes on Spotify and have been a fan of her work since. She is never boring to listen to as she maintains great intonation, pacing, and pitch throughout the episodes. I always listen to her on my way to work. Likewise, this audiobook was narrated by Alexis herself and it was very easy to listen to - I highly recommend it! But compared to her podcast, this book condenses her advice into bite-sized digestible chapters that are quick for readers to absorb.
One of my favourite things about Alexis is her ability to shed light on other people's bullcrap and also demands us to reflect on our own bullcrap. This book is great for individuals who want to build on their self-awareness! Read this if you want to build a loving relationship with yourself because Alexis shows you how to do that through self-love, self-esteem, and self-respect. This book also shows how you can connect with significant others (family, friends, partner) through setting healthy boundaries.
The message she’s trying to send is a decent one, but this is a very average read. The sentences are huge and only 1-3 sentences per paragraph. My biggest issue though, was the constant spelling mistakes. For example, Page 86-87 in Chapter Eleven. I don’t know what the editor was getting paid for to be honest because they certainly haven’t done their job. Chapter 11 ‘Power Routines to Prep You for Success’ is an absolute S&$) show. The message is ok. It’s been done before 100’s of times, so there’s really nothing new here. I’d skip this one. There’s plenty of books that are well edited, have much more in depth detail and don’t flog a dead horse.
I love how this book teaches cognitive restructuring but in a way that is easily understood. Alexa is super motivating and teaches you how to realize what you want and then relentlessly go for it. Something that she expresses over and over in this book and her podcasts is happy people who are in love with their life have no need to be judgmental/negative towards others or to put them down because they’re so busy focused on growing their own happiness instead. Ugh the brain chemical references are soooooooo good.
I think this book would be a really good place to start if you hadn’t read many self-help/books about the brain. It covers lots of topics, each chapter is reasonably stand alone and is an easy read with quite conversational writing (it literally felt like I was listening to her speak on her podcast, I appreciated the writing felt very Alexis). I personally wish there was a bit more time spent on each topic and less covered, so we could get more of a deep dive in each chapter like we get in Alexis’ podcast.
Great book for reframing that toxic picture. Whilst reading, I thought if people in my life that had this negative way of thinking and how they did not ride-the-ride of a more positive and uplifted sense of self. It’s a shame, but you can’t force people to work on themselves. As Alexis says, those lemons will eventually drop off.
2.5 stars. it’s fine i guess. would be good if you hadn’t ready much in the way of a self help book before or were starting to look into these thoughts cos it didn’t really say anything new. sorta a new tough love approach though. structure was strange; the sentences were so long. structure of this review also strange i’m just brain dumping.
Absolutely loved this! Highly recommend to anyone wanting to dig deeper into their own self and find their self- journey being okay alone and using all the tools and strategies that this book gives as guidance. It has shakes my life so much and for all the right reasons. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to do the self- work on themselves!
An interesting read that covered lots of methods to reset yourself, change your perspective and work towards achieving your goals. It provides a good introduction to the concepts without going into heaps of theoretical detail.
Changed my life, loved it the whole way through! Be Bold is a digestible, clear and practical self help book that does not use toxic positivity and is not sappy or cringe. I will always come back to this book and loved the little tasks included. Thank-you Alexis!
Towards the end of the book is a chapter called “Move the Eff On” which more or less sums up the book for me. The process is basically reflect on the past, make a daily plan, develop a routine and get on with it. Not useful for me.
I think overall I found there to be some good advice in this book, however I did find myself disagreeing with some of the authors viewpoints. I think it is work revisiting and reading and if you want a good motivation book this is a good starting point. I listened to this using borrowbox.
This book really had me thinking. It has definitely changed the way I view things and how to control my emotions. It helped me to realize my unlimited potential. Please read this!
Her podcast far outweighs her book. Not saying it’s bad. It just felt very “I get the idea” or “I know how this ends” kinda vibes. It was sort of the same stuff over and over. Whereas her podcasts truly amp you up with new information every week.
Pleasantly surprised by how much I took away from this novel. However, the spelling errors in my printed version threw me off a bit and pulled my attention away several times. Otherwise, would of been a solid 4/5 stars.
Totally obsessed with this! I’m an avid Alexis fan! It’s written in simple terms, so it’s easy to read but then also implement. Great balance of a gentle approach with a side of kick in the guts (needed). Feeling sooo empowered and ready to take on the next season of my life!
It had some useful ways to reframe thoughts. I pulled a few things from it, but overall it was quite average and underwhelming. I have read much better self help books.
