The story of two young men from very different parts of Italy who migrate to Australia in the early 1950s, where they work on the Snowy Mountains scheme. Salvatore is from a middle-class, restaurant-owning family near Milan; Fabio is a peasant from an impoverished rural area in Italy's south.

People in a familiar place, become unfamiliar; in an unfamiliar place, which taunts, pushes, pulls, slaps and knocks them, and very gradually becomes home. I loved it.
I really enjoyed this book. I sympathised and related to the characters, and loved the descriptions, especially of food, gardens and places. I had to do some googling on the snowy river scheme after reading this book. Educational as well as a great story. I will be looking out for more books by Andy Kissane.
02 October 2009 - a little hard to follow the story lines of the different characters. It pulled on the heart strings a little and made me reflect on all the people who have ended up in Australia over the years. Found the Snowy Mountain tunnel details interesting also.
