Raven Stevenson was in Lakeview barely twenty-four hours when she heard those ominous words. She'd come to the small Virginie town to reconcile with her brother and forget the haunting memories of her past. She didn't expect to find friends, community--or a thirty-five-year-old mystery of tragic love. Nor did she expect to meet Shane Montgomery, whose love for his ailing aunt Abby breaks through Raven's carefully built defenses. When Abby unwittingly shares some of the secrets behind that long-buried mustery, she and Raven are targeted by someone who wants those secrets silenced--and who's willing to kill both of them to do it.
I discovered a stockpile of Large Print Love Inspired books from days gone by at my library recently so I grabbed a few to check them out. Shirlee McCoy is one of my absolutely-must-buy-right-away LIS authors so I was over the moon excited to discover her second ever book published with this line. Eeeep!
First thing I noticed right away was how the Love Inspired Suspense criteria has developed over the last decade or so. They are much edgier and action-packed now. Die Before Nightfall felt more mystery than suspense (which I loved, by the way.) Kind of had a bit of a Phyllis A. Whitney vibe. Lots of page time building relationships punctuated by eerie scenes with a few hair-raising episodes thrown in. More simmering tension than sinister assaults. Not that there isn't any danger -- it's not just as rapid-fire-in-your-face like you find in the current LIS novels.
A children's author hero (squeak!) A heroine struggling to come to grips with her past. A sweet canine companion and Ugliest Dog of the Year contender. And a dementia patient with a link to the cold case mystery that draws them all together. I enjoyed this blast from the past Love Inspired style!
This is the second in The Lakeview Series by Shirlee McCoy. I liked this book but wish the author had expanded on the plot and characters more than she did. There were so many possible paths she could have taken. Two characters from Still Waters, the first book in the series, appear in this book: Jake and Tiffany Reed. In this novel, the plot is centered on Shane's aunt, Abby, who is suffering from dementia and is troubled by a memory in which her brother killed a woman and then committed suicide. Raven, a geriatric nurse, has moved to the area, hoping to reconnect with her brother Ben. Raven establishes a bond with Abby and tries to help her. Unfortunately, there is someone in the area who wants to help Abby depart from life; and soon Shane and Raven are trying to figure out who it is while they keep Abby safe. I can always count on Shirlee McCoy to write a good book.
I have almost 2,000 books in my Kindle library. After reading a current Shirlee McCoy story, I went back about a decade thinking I’d reread my introduction to Ms. McCoy’s story. I loved the reread, and continued rereading. Die Before Nightfall is just as entertaining this second time around. I especially love Ms. McCoy’s heroes. They’re the type of man I hope my daughter finds to spend her life with. I also love especially that God gets the credit for her happily ever after endings. Perfect afternoon.
I'm doing my best to read all of Shirlee McCoy's books. I just discovered her writing earlier this year. This one has an old mystery that no one wants the answer discovered. Very good. Recommended.
A thriller and romance story. Pretty sweet tale of coming home to a place and family you never knew existed. Gallant knight and damsel in distress with suspense!
