Like every other person in the world of espionage, Tamir Binder is searching for the truth. But truth is an elusive thing, and sometimes one must delve deep into the darkest places to find it.

When Tamir picks up the phone and the Mossad agent on the other end of the line asks him to return to service to help with a struggle against a ghost from the past, he understands that this is a one-time opportunity to gain the closure he’s always wanted with the beautiful Palestinian fighter he has been obsessed with ever since his military service in the prestigious Unit 8200.

Tamir is extracted from his regular life and sent to Vienna to renew the chase before she can carry out her dangerous plans. But on his search, he unravels a gripping affair extending to the highest ranks of the government.

This sensational discovery and the surprising reunion with the woman who has occupied his mind for years put Tamir with his back against the wall in unfamiliar territory. This time he is willing to go all the way and break all the rules, but will the truth come to light? And will his passion be realized?

‘Is there anything you don’t know about me?’ – Introducing a fine new author!

Israeli author Hagai Dagan is widely known and lauded for his fiction and non-fiction books in Hebrew, having won the Prime Minister’s Award fir Hebrew writers. His genre – demonology, espionage, eschatology and Jewish fantasy. Now his work is available in English translation with THE MARSH ANGEL, translated from the Hebrew by Itamar Toussia Cohen.

Dagan enhances his richly imagined mystery thriller with prose that is as seductive as his theme, as evident in the prologue introducing the primary character Tamir in early childhood – “Tamir lay close to his mother. Her warm body exuded an aroma of cinnamon rolls. The small bedroom enveloped and embraced her, and she embraced it in return. Far off in the distance was an open window, like a dream, and outside, the night engulfed Kibbutz Sufit: thin rain murmured, frogs croaked in the creek, the scent of water and reed carried in the air, cows lowed in the fields, and jackals howled in the distance. Tamir asked to hear the story of Princess Polnochi again. His mother laughed. Maybe she will come tonight, she said, you never know, you need to wait. She never comes before midnight. Polnochi means ‘midnight’ in Russian…’ A hint of the story is offered and the grace of the writing is elegant as we move to Tamir’s adulthood.

The plot is summarized as follows; ‘Like every other person in the world of espionage, Tamir Binder is searching for the truth.

The writing is fluid, the action fast paced, and the characters are so well drawn that the story leaps off the page. Hagai Dagan is a most welcome author whose many books we can now hope will appear in English translation!

“Marsh Angel” made me feel as if I did not know anything about the Middle East. This is not the book’s fault. It made me want to find out more about the region. Despite my lack of knowledge, it was a intense psychological thriller. Simply put, the story is about an Israelí intelligence officer, Tamir Binder and his fascination with the Bedouin twins, Dallal and Sa’ira Zaidani. Are they friends or foes?

The plot was suspenseful because of Tamir sporadic and daunting behavior trying to find out where he fits in his career and his personal life; while all the time chasing “the stint”. Was he only interested in his job because of these two sisters? Would he be their undoing or their savior? I kept reading to find out.
The book did not get five stars because the author has a lot of work to do concerning the book’s layout and transition from one speaker to another. I got lost trying to decipher what character was speaking. However, the overall story saved the day.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

Tamir covers from young to old as he grows up in Israel near the Palestine area. The style of writing makes more intelligent and detailed information. I learned much of learning of electronic surveillance to enemy plans. The book covers the Israel environment when surrounded with hostile countries. Tamir covers his military training, then moves on the graduation study, results a PhD in philosophy. A orphan twin sisters into and out as his life dreams of a special relationship with one of the girls. His feelings he teases for him as he learns information of her through his surveillance operations. In makes a while to get hooked to Tamir story. By the end, he finds then left his woman, to form a relationship for another. I received a advanced copy of the story through Hidden Gems. I find the book valued to write a review.

The Marsh Angel was interesting

This was a fairly lengthy book, involving a very interesting group of people and ranging from a military environment to a much more normal story. The personalities seemed to fit well, and you seemed to just fall into the story with them. Some surprises built in made it a very good read.

Beautiful!

Although the translation is sometimes sloppy, and the book could use some copy editing, I was entranced throughout. Lots of beautiful language, some transit between prose and poetry, some shifts from dream to reality. Very different from other Israeli novels I have read. I want to read more by this author!

An unusual twist

It honestly took me a few pages to get into the story. Once invested in the story and main characters, everything flowed intriguingly. There were several twists that somewhat surprised me. Overall a very good story and an unusual take on espionage and human interactions.

This fascinating story is an enjoyable and engrossing read. There are surprises/twists that further hold your attention. The espionage and human interaction themes make it highly readable and it has some unique positions within the story that cause the reader to think, while being thoroughly entertained.
This book is a winner!

A glider from a roof of a house is unreal.

I liked the book but it could be shortened a bit. Except for the way the woman escapes at the end. A glider rising up from the roof of a city house is unreal.

Good but not what I expected

The book was good just not the best thing that I have read. I expected more action and more edge of your seat suspense.

Enchanting

Good read. I liked Tamir, the intelligence analyst with the instincts of an agent and Dallai, the phantom who comes to life
