She has the chance for a new life, but will she take it? When their mother dies of pneumonia, Ellie and her younger sister Dora are left alone in the world. Their hard-drinking, womanizing father has abandoned them, and they cannot afford the rent on their East End tenement alone. Ellie is proud but she cannot turn down an offer of help from Doctor Lowe , a kindly man who sees Ellie as the replacement for his own recently deceased daughter. Though Doctor Lowe's motives are misguided, his kindness offers Ellie and Dora an opportunity to escape the poverty of their background and make something of themselves. But will Ellie risk her chance at a new life for revenge on her father?
An enthralling Victorian saga of family and female independence, perfect for fans of Maggie Hope and Val Wood.
Ellie and Dora's mother died leaving her at the mercy of her brutal, alcoholic and abusive father. Elle has been abused by her father after her mother's death and longs for vengeance. They had one brother who is not much of a help. The sisters were taken in by Dr. Lowe, who treated Ellie's mother when she was ill. Dr. Lowe sees his own long departed daughter in Ellie while his wife makes Elli's life miserable. Finally Ellie decided to leave her comfort zone and live for herself. This is a story of a girl who overcomes insurmountable odds and who take control of her life. The plot is good but I some times had this issue that we are spending too much time on what's going on in Ellie's head rather than focusing on the story line/characters etc.
It was a feminist book. It is written with a flow and flawless English. It has a strong point of waiting for suspicion that holds the story together. But I felt like the characters were a little underdeveloped. And the girl was made to fall in love with practically everyone she encounters. It has a strange ending. It all goes smoothly: no twits, no wtf points, nothing. But, well, it was gifted to me, and it was a good story about hope and hard work overall.
