This is the SECOND book of my Vampire's Pet series I thought that my life had ended the day I got puchased by a blood thirsty monster. I thought that the rest of my life was going to be nothing but constant fear and suffering.
But I couldn't have been more wrong.
What I found was something much different. Something that I didn't even know I was looking for let alone wanted.
What I found was a new beginning. A new beginning with the one I cared most for.
At first, I didn't want to read this given all the problems I had with the first book, but I really hated the thought of not finishing a series so I decided to continue. Now I know at least I won't be reading the third book.
I've seen many people praising this series and considering this is one of the more popular series on wattpad, I am not here to shame or mock anybody who enjoyed it, just here to share my own opinions and criticisms of it.
If you were to ask me to describe "Vampires pet" in one word, the word I would use is "disturbing". Not only does it minimize slavery and abuse, but it sells the idea of these things being acceptable to a young, impressionable audience. Words like "slave" and "pet" are thrown around so casually, almost carelessly, in what felt like every other paragraph (esp in Marcus's perspective) as though there were no weight behind those words. In just a few examples: "The slaves prepared the delicious meal we had today", "All of the slaves locked themselves for the night", "The Lord gave his favorite slaves a rewarding break". Even Carlos, one of the main characters, talks about his experience as Lord Vanderwood's slave in an almost positive "it's not so bad" way, to which I would reply, "Has the author not read anything about slavery whatsoever?? From her writing here, where slave owners such as the lord and his family are consistently praised as kind and caring, where slaves who question their loyalty are villianized, I really don't think she has. If that is the case, then I don't blame her, because the history education system at most schools (Germany being the possible exception) is pretty shitty when it comes to this kind of stuff. Nonetheless, much of the writing around these topics is casual and may even be offensive to some. I am not opposed to books mentioning or discussing slavery at all. I am opposed to them portraying slavery as anything but an inherent evil and a blight on our humanity.
Other than the offensiveness, the plot and character development simply aren't that good. What kept me engaged in the first book, the sense of danger and the slow but sure development of Khloe and Nico's relationship from one characterized through fear to one through caring for one another, are completely gone from this addition. In fact, I would say the first 25% of the book, maybe until chapter 30, is just filler. The 'story' up to this point is just Khloe being shy, Nico thinking about Khloe sexually, Xander and Doe playing games, Khloe drawing and reading books. That's it. Not only that, but I actually thought all the "blushing", "Khloe being shy", "sweetheart" flirty talk was really vapid and annoying because of the lack of depth to their relationship. The sex scenes were cringy and made me skip paragraphs. At the times when I was supposed to root for this couple, I was unable to because I felt absolutely nothing from their bond.
As for character development, I either disliked or strongly disliked every character from this story. For some of the characters, I felt like they were underdeveloped and one dimensional. For Carlos, the only thing we know about him is that he cares about Marcus and has a decent relationship with the Lord of the city. His only purpose in the story is to act like a love interest to Marcus and to make sacrifices for Marcus. He has no goals, ambitions, passions, etc of his own. Doe, who was a character I actually liked from the first book, speaks like 2 lines in the entire book and basically only exists to accompany as either Khloe's or Xander's sidekick, which was disappointing to me. Khloe's development is one that I felt neutral about. It was underdeveloped in some aspects and inconsistent in others. For example, her relationship to Xander. In the first book, Khloe was terrified by Xander and for good reason. While we knew this was an act by him to appear tough, Khloe didn't, which is why it was surprising when her feelings toward him in this book turned a complete 180 and she seemingly forgot and forgave him for any aggressions he had previously imposed on her. Near the end of the book, it briefly mentions in one single sentence about how apparently Doe told Khloe about Xander. However, because this interaction was not described at all, the sudden change in attitude of Khloe towards Xander came seemingly out of the blue.
While those were the characters I somewhat disliked, there were characters I absolutely hated. Marcus, for one, is such a weak-ass, pathetic character. It was like the author wanted to portray him as selfless and loyal but then crossed over that line into stupidity when the person he was willing to risk his life for and was even willing to die for, couldn't give 2 sh*ts about him (in fact, Nico forgot about him for like half of the story). I also found it interesting how the author wanted to portray Carlos as the 'bad guy' for simply wanting to save Marcus and Marcus as the 'good guy' for . Like, do we really have the authority to blame Carlos for his decision? From his perspective, Khloe and Nico were just two random strangers he barely knew and couldn't care less about. Say you have a sister who is being held hostage by some guy at knifepoint in front of you. Now, this guy also has a young woman tied up next to him. He asks you to make a choice: your sister or this random stranger? Even if your sister shakes her head no and silently begs you to not do it, honestly who would you choose: your sister who is stupid enough to not value her own life but is still your sister who you love, or the random stranger whose situation is very tragic but who you don't have a connection to? I guess you would know who I will be choosing.
The only character I hated more than Marcus was Nico. Probably not the intention of the author since he is the protagonist of the book, but his character was just so annoying. Every time, every chapter, it's Khloe Khloe Khloe. He daydreams about Khloe. He fantasizes about Khloe. Whenever he is at some important place or in the middle of a conversation, he drifts off thinking about Khloe. Like, I know he is in love with her, but is this seriously the heir to the lord of the city? And just when I thought it couldn't get anymore cliche, he straight up tells Khloe that she is his first love in 400 years. Oh really. 400 years, and we are supposed to expect that in that entire time, Nico could not find a single vampire or human he is interested in? Not only that but personally I find his behaviors downright strange in this story. He shows disgust towards a group of "wild", "undomesticated" vampires called the Northern pack for allegedly harming humans and thought of them as inferior because of that, even going as far as to skip the treaty he was supposed to sign with them. Yet, he is perfectly ok with slavery, pets, "breeders", systemic rape, killing humans once they reach 25 years, torture, and probably a sh*tload of other messed up things? Even if it is to be argued he is not ok with these things, he doesn't seem to call out his parents for maintaining a system allowing them, nor does he seem to have a problem with using slaves and pets in the castle. It's just incredibly hypocritical and once again shows the author's nonchalance and ignorance towards slavery as well as other human rights abuses.
The one last thing I want to rant about before I end this review is the ending. Oh god, the ending. So many flaws and just nonsense about it. First of all, . So basically, they forced it upon her to risk dying and endure unimaginable pain because they felt it was the 'only way' for Khloe and Nico to be together. Caroline justified it by saying it was because of some 'natural law', which to me just seemed rather racist/bigoted. But what really made the entire thing convenient was that because what if she hadn't? That would change the whole tone of the story and make Nico's parents look like cruel, murderous a**holes (like they truly are), so nope can't have that. Instead, everything ties together in a beautiful, neatly wrapped ribbon and we are supposed adore Caroline and Daniel for their love for each other and for their son's new relationship and for , completely forgetting that they are slave owners and their rule most likely led to the deaths of thousands of humans each year, but hey Khloe and Nico are getting married, so all is fine!
I also hate the ending for another reason, because it is like the author's solution to an oppressive apartheid racist system that forbids human vampire relationships is to not change the actual system, changing the laws and make humans and vampires equal etc, but to place that burden on individuals like Khloe. What happens when the next vampire falls in love with a human? Will all humans who fall in love with vampires be turned into vampires? What about the pets forced into breeding, into cages 'too small' for them at pet shops, forced into new lives with their vampire masters who kill them for blood? Or does none of that matter apparently?
Overall, if the author is reading this review, I highly recommend her before starting the third novel, to just read about slavery. Watch some documentaries on the enslavement of Yazidis by ISIS, read some articles about how oppression of African Americans is still affecting their descendants today, listen to some memoirs from Koreans who lived through slavery and sexual slavery at the hands of Japanese soldiers. Education is important.
This story truly pulled on my heartstrings! I remembered the first book Vampire's Pet by a few details from years back and with the help of my other book obsessed readers like myself I was actually able.to read the whole two books in it's entirety and I honestly can say it was worth the wait even if it was so long till I could figure out the stories title, but with that said hands down one of my favorite vampire stories! Kept me on my toes and the character development for everyone was so well done and just ah! I loved all the characters! Not to mention the way the ending was wrapped up was perfect! Couldn't ask for a better ending honestly!
I don't really know where to begin. Khloe and Nico's love story is very cute and I am glad that they ended up having the family support. I think that whole situation in which Carlos had to drug/kidnap Khloe to confirm if Khloe and Nico were dating was wild. The Lord could have gotten confirmation in a MUCH better way. Then having his son sent off to the dungeons without checking to see if he was alright (almost died if it wasn't for Xander) equally as wild. The lack of communication and trust between some members of this family was very sad. Honestly I really wanted to read more about Marcus and Carlos and their love story. I was rooting for them since the beginning so in the second to last chapter when they had a little moment I was really excited about it. Xander has had a lot of character development and I am loving every single second of it so I am excited to read Prey which will focus on his and Doe's story.

The first book received only three stars. This one receives one star. It was hard to read. I was almost halfway through it when I just... I could not keep going. I am so sick and tired of reading the word "slave(s)" when referring to lower class human males and "pets" as lower class human females in this vampire universe.
The author was supposed to go through and edit this series. I genuinely do not understand how they (specifically the first book) are Wattpad "classics" because the writing is so juvenile—and again, I am AWARE that she was thirteen when she first published Vampire's Pet, but you'd think after a decade she'd have actually gone through and EDITED the eBooks.
Cannoness has a horrible habit of telling and not showing from what I've read of Vampire's Pet and Love & Loss.
Honestly, don't waste your time like I did. Hopefully, the next book I read will be better!
I want to say I loved the story. It was unpredictable, it was romantic, it was full of emotional scenes. But I can't fall in love with the female main character, Khloe. She's basically a terrified, simple, unintelligent, clingy, weakling of a human who lives to love and serve Nico. Which is fine, I guess, since that's their dynamic. Nico, at least, develops. But she's basically a sex doll - literally a cute, pliable, no-backbone woman with big boobs and is a willing bedmate LOL I guess guys like that? I just needed to fall in love with her and I didn't. That said, it wasn't a waste of time reading this book. It was entertaining. (This is the same review I posted on the first book, Vampire's Pet, since it's basically the same story and Love & Loss is Part 2)
I’ve enjoyed this book a bit more than the first purely because of the relationship between Khloe and Nico. Why is it then not worthy 5 stars?
For a couple of reasons: - as much as I love Xander (and Doe) I feel like the change in Xander’s character is just a bit too drastic too be realistic. Perhaps my view on this changes once I’ve read Doe’s book. (edit after reading Prey: yes, my opinion changed lol). - the whole subplot with Marcus. I’m sorry I just didn’t care enough. - the twist at the end … well I wasn’t expecting it that’s for sure but at the same time I feel like once again the character change was bit too drastic.
Overall the story was great though and I loved the ending. I was close to tears at certain parts which doesn’t happen very often!

i don't know why but getting through this one was tough compared to the 1st one .. i enjoyed it though! like the first one, i would really read it again if it was rewritten!! i liked the plot almost as much as the first one! and even though the author claimed that she is going to write a 3rd one, i think nico's and khloe's story should end in this book.
3.8⭐️ The plot was a bit slow and felt staggered at times, but the storyline was, again, captivating. I loved the conclusion (perhaps there will be more?) for Khloe & Nico as well as a few side characters.
Honestly, it’s probably not the book’s fault that I’m eating it this slow because it did take me 1yr and two months to finish, but I was just very unimpressed and everything seemed to work out too easily for the characters I don’t know…
Spelling mistakes here and there but the character development and the story are good. I hope there is a third to carry out the next part of the story!!
The second book to "Vampire's pet", also very good but I realy wanted to see more of theri reletionship when she turned into a vampire, ending felt a bit rushed yk.
