Men of Rocky Mountain #1

Claiming Her Forever

Rate this book
An Alpha Mountain Man Romance

I’m not Mr. Settle-Down-and-Start-a-Family.
Tried it. Failed at it. Don’t want it again.

I like my solitary life in the mountains.
I mind my business and I keep to myself.

I learned the hard way that life ain’t easy or fair.
One minute you think you’ve got it all figured out and the next, you find your wife in your bed with your own best friend.

Then Quinn Prescott shows up to rent the lower level of my cabin.
Sweet, innocent Quinn with her persistent attempts to get to know me and her constant questions.

Those big doe eyes have a story behind them.
She wants more than just a casual hookup and she deserves more.
But I’m not the man who can give it to her, and the quicker she understands that, the better.

I tell myself just one small touch.
One lingering glance into her piercing blue eyes.
One taste of her sweet, pouty lips.

But it’s not just once, it’s an all-consuming desire to claim her, to make her mine.
I can feel myself losing grip on the situation but I don’t care.

Then my ex shows up with a baby, claiming it’s mine and reminding me why I live by the rules that I do.
Only it’s too late, I’ve let Quinn in and now she’s carrying a secret of her own.

No matter how many times I try to lie to myself, this thing between us isn’t just lust—it’s something so much more and it’s something I’m about to lose forever.

Well, this was coasting to at least a 3 star read but the hero was so absolutely stupid and infuriating, I couldn't go three stars. It was lucky to eek out a 2 star read from me.

It was good in parts and had some sexy moments with some entertaining dirty thoughts but the basic way the hero didn't reassure the heroine and in fact thought sending her away so she wouldn't be hurt (uh hello, already hurt) was just ugh.

✤ Heroine finds out about ex-wife and possible baby daddy from gossipy old ladies, not from hero.

✤ Willing to tell him, they'll get through this together.

✤ Hero basically tells heroine he needs time, no idea where it leaves the two of them.

✤ Hello, ex-wife cheated!

✤ No reassurance to heroine but basically sends her away, and gets made at her for drinking away her sorrows.

✤ Heroine's friend Willow is a queen:
“Oh, hell no! That is some serious bullshit! You don’t get a woman to fall in love with you and then rip her heart out with zero explanation and then just say, ‘I don’t know where that leaves us; I need time.’ What a fucking bag of dicks!”

✤ See? Queen.

✤ Heroine attacks hero and bangs him basically after he yells at her.

✤ Hero finally gives her an explanation and a legitimate apology

✤ Dick. You think??

✤ She's an idiot too. Letting him bang her before his explanation and then he's away for three days after that. He should've told her the moment she knocked on his door and that ex-wife answered.

✤ Heroine tells hero she loves him and to give them a chance and he tells her that her feelings aren't real.

✤ Heroine wants to slap him but doesn't.

✤ SLAP HIM! HE DESERVES IT!

✤ Even though she was an idiot and banged him before the explanation she still deserved better. This was heartbreaking:
“That is NOT true. You love me. I know you do,” I say as I look up at him through blurry eyes. All I want is a reason to stay. A reason to not run away. I fist his shirt as the tears flow down my cheeks and I whisper my plea over and over again: “Please give me one reason. Just one. Please.” But my words hang in the air, met with nothing but silence and the sound of my heart shattering into a million pieces.

✤ Too little too late for the hero when he finally pulls his head out of his ass.

✤ Just overall annoyed me.

✤ He may have been alpha in the bedroom but he certainly had no balls outside of it.

From the start of this review it’s a DNF, but because I made it 77% of the way through before I quit before rage took over, I figured that was enough to give it the grade, for me, it deserved. I only briefly looked at other grades and I think most were higher and I didn’t read any reviews so I’m thinking I’m in the minority here.

I didn’t have any issues with the writing. I was thinking 3.5 for a while but then it took a very short very definite nose dive.
The hero(?) of this book, Sawyer had the worst thing happen to him, marriage wise. He walked in on his wife and best friend getting close and personal, very close and personal if you know what I mean. After the divorce they moved away and Sawyer remained. He lives on a mountain close to a small town and has a number of business interests.

One of them is renting out part of his house to summer visitors. His most recent tenant is Avery. After losing her mother to a lengthy battle with cancer, she is ready for a new life. She wants to become an author and thinks the scenery and peace and quiet of where she’s staying will inspire her. She and Sawyer have an instant connection but despite that he holds her at a distance. So far so good right? Well I’m just going to list the things I found annoying and then rage inducing.

* Once she meets the women of the town, they instantly all become BFF’s because they are all such suzie sunshine, aren’t we all wonderful. Annoying.

* There are way too many suzie sunshine’s. I couldn’t keep up with who’s who. Annoying.

* Jumping ahead because I did skip to the end, her very first attempt at writing a romance novel, she was published. Annoying and just no. This was Her First Try!! I’m not an author and no plans to be one but hearing how many authors struggle and are often rejected at first, I just couldn’t buy her insta success.

*Her almost pleading for Sawyer to like her. Show some pride woman. Make him earn you. Respect yourself. Annoying.

* His calling her baby/baby doll. Annoying

And now I come to the rage inducing ‘oh hell no’ reason I DNFed this book. This will contain spoilers so beware.
*
*
*
*
*

His ex comes back to town alone with a child claiming he’s the baby daddy. She comes to his house. By this time Averie and Sawyer are living together. So what does he do but pack up her things and tote them back to the part she had rented while she was out with the fellow suzie sunshine’s. AND HE HADNT EVEN TOLD HER HE’D BEEN MARRIED.
When she comes back and sees the ex in his arms, he waves her away. She’s within hearing distance and when the ex asks who the woman was, he says “nobody”.

I tell you my blood pressure skyrocketed! Yet still I read on a bit further. I read long enough to see him get all pissy and bent out of shape when gee, she doesn’t want to talk to him and he gets all bossy and demanding and then, oh Lordy, called her baby.

That was it. Book done for me at 77%. I wouldn’t have read further if I was paid. Here is this young, vulnerable, still in mourning woman and this is how he treats her? The only possible ending for me would be if his dick became gangerous and fell off and I’m thinking that didn’t happen.

So a HUGE NO for this book. Pity as I said the writing wasn’t bad and the outline made it sound interesting

Whiskey, Wounds, and Wanting Her

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙💚💜
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪🧪
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☺️🤣🙁😘🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

🦸🏻‍♂️ Hero Spotlight: Sawyer
Sawyer lives tucked away in the rugged Colorado mountains, in a cabin built for a life that never came to be. Years ago, his world shattered when he walked in on his wife Justine in bed with his best friend—who also happened to be the father of her unborn child. They left town together, and Sawyer hasn’t let anyone close since. Now, he’s a gruff, whiskey-sipping loner who runs several small-town businesses: a Jeep tour company, a handmade furniture shop, an Airbnb rental, and a new restaurant venture with friends. But every night, he returns to his cabin and the silence that’s become his armor.

---

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroine Spotlight: Quinn
Quinn is a 27-year-old aspiring novelist who’s spent the last six years caring for her terminally ill mother. With her mother’s passing, Quinn is finally free to chase her own dreams. She heads to the Colorado mountains for a three-month writing retreat, renting the lower level of Sawyer’s cabin. Sweet, curious, and emotionally open, Quinn hasn’t had much romantic experience—but she’s ready to start living for herself.

---

🔥 Plot Snapshot
From the moment Quinn arrives, Sawyer is all gruff edges and emotional walls. He avoids small talk, keeps his distance, and clearly wants nothing to do with the beautiful woman living beneath his feet. But Quinn isn’t one to back down from connection. She cooks for him, chats with him, and slowly chips away at his defenses. Their chemistry is undeniable—raw, electric, and impossible to ignore. What begins as tension soon spirals into something far deeper.

---

❤️‍🔥 What Worked

• Sawyer’s brooding intensity and constant internal monologue about Quinn? Deliciously dirty and emotionally layered.
• The steam factor is off the charts—scenes that sizzle without sacrificing character depth.
• Both leads come with rich, believable backstories that make their emotional arcs feel earned.
• The supporting cast adds warmth and texture, grounding the romance in a vibrant small-town setting.

---

🤨 Room for More

• Sawyer’s emotional whiplash drags on a bit too long. His trauma is real, but the push-pull dynamic starts to feel repetitive.
• When Justine reappears, Sawyer’s reaction is… baffling. It undercuts some of the growth he’s made and feels like a plot hiccup rather than a meaningful obstacle.

---

🎧 Narration Vibes
Narrated in dual POV by Javi Wilder and Meg Sylvan, this audiobook delivers on voice chemistry. Meg’s soft, feminine tone brings Quinn’s vulnerability and quiet strength to life—she’s got a Rita-from-Dexter vibe that’s oddly perfect. Javi Wilder’s deep, gravelly voice is pure Sawyer: guarded, rugged, and emotionally raw. His delivery nails the character’s isolation and slow-burning desire. Together, they elevate the story’s emotional stakes and steamy tension.

---

📝 Final Thoughts
This audiobook blends emotional healing, sizzling attraction, and small-town charm into a romance that’s equal parts tender and tantalizing. While Sawyer’s emotional pacing could use a trim and the Justine subplot stumbles, the chemistry and narration more than make up for it. If you’re into grumpy mountain men, emotionally resilient heroines, and slow-burns that eventually ignite—this one’s worth the listen.

Alexis winter did a marvelous job on this book I mean I didn't feel rushed there was plenty of interaction and some extremely hot scenes.

Quinn and Sawyer are a unique blend of camping 101 with a pro. I mean you know that there's got to be something that's going to happen I know I always did one I had something like that going on and always embarrassing but at the right you got hot you got cold you got oopsis and I mean hey what do you say after that.
oh no yes I would recommend this for a contemporary romance and you can read it easily in 2 days or less, so happy reading and talk with you later

Absolutely horrible H and such a spineless h. First he’s completely hot and then cold for most of the book. Then when his cheating ex comes back claiming that her kid is his, he moves her in and kicks out the h without a heads up. She comes home, door is locked all her stuff moved to different apt and apparently she’s no one when the ex asked. He then decided they need to talk and finally tells her what’s happening, but he needs time (after hooking up btw). Then ends it with her again and finds out everything was a lie. Goes after h and is like “oops by bad, I do love you let’s get back together.” And the h? She responds “I’ve just wanted you and our baby”.

Such a rage read.

tropes: fling, grumpy hero, age gap

not much to say, she rents his cabin for 3 months and they end up giving up on their attraction, but what will happen when their time ends?
also, the hero has a dirty mouth

No, just No. He is an asshole and she has no spine 😭 she let him walk all over her feelings. That is not a grumpy man, that is an ass of a man, ok!?? By the end I didn't care about them, I just laughed at his decisions, and her inability to just put herself in the first place.

sorry for the language, I just couldn't help it 🥹

What I Liked: I enjoyed the first half of this book. I thought the writing was decent and I quite liked both of the main characters and thought they had good chemistry. Some of the romance came a bit out of nowhere and felt rushed in a few places, but it worked okay for me. The plot was quite cute and I liked the dynamic it set up between them.
What I Didn’t: Before I get into my main issue with the book, I had a couple of gripes with the writing. There were a few moments where I felt things that didn’t make sense were thrown in - just little things, like characters suddenly being in places or having objects that they didn’t before with no mention of when or why that happened. It just felt a little clumsy and in that respect I think the writing needed a more thorough edit.
There was also a part of the book where the heroine, Quinn, suddenly mentions she possibly has fertility issues, and I think this was handled poorly.
The main issue though is that the book completely lost me in the second half. Sawyer, who was pretty much the stereotypical grumpy mountain man hero, just turned really unpleasant and it was hard to follow his logic for any of the decisions that he made.
Overall: I enjoyed the first half of this book, but the second half was poorly paced and poorly plotted. The drama at the end felt very, very forced - pretty much all of the fall out was avoidable with just a quick conversation. I get that this lack of communication can be a convention of a romance novel, but it felt very forced here, and Sawyer’s behaviour in the second half was confusing and nonsensical. I liked their relationship in the start, but by the end of it I really wanted Quinn to just run far in the opposite direction.
Would I Recommend It?: I think that some people would enjoy this - I think if you’re looking for a grumpy/sunshine small town romance that’s heavy on drama, then this would work for you.
Would I Read Something By The Author Again?: No.

A dirty-talkin’ mountain man?
Yes, please!
I really enjoyed this quick & sexy read.

Sawyer rents out the bottom part of his cabin to Quinn for three months.

He’s sooooo grumpy. But 100% huggable and lovable...a sexy AF, brawny man.

Quinn is soooooo quirky and cute and an adorable nervous talker and I just wanted to give her all the hugs.

When these two were near each other? Holy delicious sexual tension-filled goodness GALORE. It was delightful.

This story was steamy and it was fun, yet the hero made a few bad decisions that made me mad and want to kick his ass. Still thoroughly enjoyed it though.

This was exactly what I was looking for. I devoured it. And I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Quinn has just enduring a devastating tragedy so she decides to book a mountain cabin for three months to get away and work on the romance novel she wants to write. When she arrives she is taken aback by her cantankerous landlord but it is only a matter of time before her sunny personality has them spending time together.

Sawyer has been hurt by the people he thought he could trust and all he wants is to be left alone. When he meets Quinn she breaks through the walls he has built around his heart but the relationship they are building could be destroyed by his questionable choices when it comes to his past.

Quinn and Sawyer have dealt with the hands that life have dealt them very different as she is searching for love and he wants nothing to do with it however what starts off as hot chemistry turns into so much more. The narrators were a great choice for the characters as they brought out the personalities of the characters and the emotions they were feeling. 🎧Audiobook Obsession

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Synopsis:

The story follows Quinn, a woman who has decided to radically change her atmosphere and embark on a new adventure in a small town in the mountains. Her landlord is Sawyer, a divorced man with trust and commitment issues. They don’t get along very well at the start but attraction wins over.

However, Sawyer has a past he hasn’t told Quinn. When that past comes back to haunt them, will they be able to stay strong?

Review:

The first half of the book was okay. The writing is nothing out of the ordinary, pretty standard basic writing style but it does get the job done and it does allow you to submerge into the story. The problem came with the second half.

The moment the characters start to get romantically involved, the reader can see an unstable and inconsistent behaviour from them, especially from the male main character, Sawyer. He does the push-and-pull countless times with Quinn, going from saying/doing dirty things to her to giving her the cold shoulder. He constantly pulls her back until he wants to or sees someone else interested in her.

All of this is somewhat justified by his traumatic past relationship with his ex¬-wife. Although I do understand the trust and commitment issues that might arise from such an event, it is immature and childish for a thirty-something year old man to justify his unstable and inconsistent behaviour as if there isn’t options, such as healing and therapy, to consider.

Sawyer has a personality that just infuriates me, personally. He is considered as a victim (which he is) due to the tragedy of his life but happiness of other people bothers him. Whenever his friends display concern with him over his secluded life or even just mention their wives and children, Sawyer immediately thinks they are trying to impose their “lifestyle” on him. It is called being a friend, idiot.

All things go to shit in the second half where, in Thanksgiving, when Sawyer invites Quinn to spend it with him and his childhood friends, one of his friends advises Sawyer to figure things out with Quinn, not only for his sake but for hers as well. Sawyer, somehow, takes it in the wrong way and gets into a mood that, somehow, Quinn is oblivious to. Since then, he has a very cold attitude towards her.

Sawyer shares a shit ton of his past life with Quinn but not for a second does he approach the topic of his ex-wife and the damage he has seen and felt. Instead, Quinn finds out through other people. When Quinn decides to give him the benefit of the doubt, Sawyer decides to play the hero (which he is not) and decides to “let her go”.

I DNF’d it at this part because I was already predicting what was going to happen and, after reading the reviews, I figured out I was right.

It was a cool story that could’ve been really good if the author hadn’t decided to ruin it with immature characters and a weak ass plotline. Flaws exists and mistakes happen but everything was deliberately caused by the male main character’s inability to heal himself and immature personality.

This was a easy read for me. The story is hot and well written with beautiful characters . Quinn and Sawyer are both suffering from heartbreaks, they both have to heal to be able to move forward. The story has some twist and turns but very interesting and entertaining. I recommend it. I received an ARC for my honest review

Claiming Her Forever by Alexis Winter is a small-town alpha mountain man romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Javi Wilder and Meg Sylvan. This is the first book in the Men of Rocky Mountain series and can be read as a standalone.

This is the first book of Alexis's that I have read, and it won't be my last. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster I never wanted to get off. I laughed, I cried, and smiled so much while listening to it.

The relationship between Quinn and Swayer was a bit messy but you couldn't help but root for them. I really enjoyed getting both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

Javi and Meg did a great job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you like contemporary romances, small town romances, or alpha male romances.

I have mixed emotions about this book. The first half of the book was good. Quinn was just trying to get away and write. Then Sawyer shows up and changes things. The second half of the book is where all the drama comes in. They were so back and forth that it got annoying. Neither one handled things well either. The good news is that in the end everything works out and they get their happy ending.

Well it’s a difficult review for me. It’s not a bad story but the Hero is really kind of an idiot. I think the author hoped to bring him across as an alpha male but failed. He’s grumpy, short, selfish and an idiot. She is stupid for taking him back.

therapy is expensive, I get it BUT

I hate to say it but there is NOTHING redeemable about the H here. Literally go to therapy, that’s it. The book would have been so much better if this man had literally gotten an iota of help ANY time throughout his life. Also, I’m nitpicking but it frustrates me that **SPOILER** it takes her getting pregnant for them to stick. Yes I know that he was “willing to go get her and fight for her” or whatever but he’d already done that like 4 times…. He was fickle and never worked through his issues and Quinn is the only good part of this story and I feel like developing him would have made it a happier ending.

Horrible

Wanna read about a man who flips on a dime and alternates between treating the h like crap and being obsessed and in love with her? Where he acts like a petulant child any time she even looks at another man? Where he throws her callously aside for someone from his past who pops back in - even tho he freaking KNOWS she is lying to his face? Where one simple apology is apparently enough to erase all of this and immediately turn into a HEA? Then this is the book for you. There's also the "surprise" at the end I'm not gonna spoil - even after all her "difficulties" we all still saw this coming a mile away and it's infuriating and such a boring way to end things.

This is a well written book with strong characters and an entertaining story line. The author brings Sawyer and Quinn together ,gives them a hot chemistry along with painful pasts both need to work through. The scenes are painted perfectly and the story flows fluidly. I enjoyed reading their story.

I usually love this author but this book was awful. The hero changed his mind every five minutes and u couldn't keep up with him. The writing of the heroine was immature and more like a teenagers view of love. The writing drove me up the wall and I couldn't finish the book. Real bad book sorry to say.

I would have given this book more stars if the H wasn't so stupid and moved his ex in whilst knowing the baby wasn't his and then throwing the h out. Also if would have been better if the h had moved on instead of going back to him once he finally got rid of the ex after eventually demanding a paternity test because obviously the child wasn't his.

Horrible MMC

The last chapter was good, a great hea... But, he didn't deserve one at all. He was mean, hurtful and betrayed her every chance he got. She may have wanted him badly enough to doormat herself , but she will always have to wonder if she won't be stuck in 2nd place anytime a choice needs to be made.
