Thuan Doan is an award-winning author of the Sophia Freeman series. He conceived his first fantasy novel, Sophia Freeman and the Mysterious Fountain, during a trip to Gabriola Island, British Columbia in the summer of 2013. Then he took his work and settled in a small town of Enderby, where it’s peaceful and quiet.
Thuan is writing under a pen name of T.X. Troan. “X” stands for Xu, his grandmother’s name who passed away. And “Troan” is a combination of his parents' names.
“No matter how this turns out, I want my family to be a part of this wonderful journey.”
This fantasy adventure read is entertaining, gripping and immersive. It is the second book in the series, but also equally worthwhile.
With its useful and helpful illustrations, spread throughout, the novel contains characters that seem to come alive indeed. The pace of the plot is enjoyable, the writing style is commendable as well. The creative story features some magical creatures. The protagonists and best friends, Sophia and Tim have to work together as a team to prove their skills, endurance and willpower.
Their lives actually depend on their desired victory. Things do not look easy at all, as no magic is allowed during the competition either.
Sufficiently suspenseful, whereas there is a lot at stake.
The second book of the Sophia Freeman-series is just as exciting as the first. Tim and Sophia - and with them, the readers - are just reeling from their first deadly fight, when, according to the strict rules of the island, they have to take part in the tournament-like Beyond Event to be forgiven and be accepted by the creatures of the island. Tim and Spohia now truly have to work as a team, and I really enjoyed watching the process as Sophia has to fight with and conquer her insecurity, her quick-tempered reactions, her inner fears, and really loved how Tim helps her along, patiently and wisely. It is a truly balanced relationship and I had the feeling that Sophia is not the only Chosen One....
Definitely an exciting, fast-paced, gripping book.
"Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade" is the second book in a series about a girl named Sophia and her adventures. In this book, Sophia and her friend Tim have to compete in a big competition called the Beyond Event. They need to win to save Tim from a big trouble and to earn the trust of the people on their island.
The story is full of action and has lots of cool parts, like when they fight against giant creatures and face a scary sea monster. They have to be brave and smart to win because they can't use magic in the competition.
that make you want to keep reading. It's not too long, so you can finish it quickly. People who like stories about friendship, bravery, and magical worlds will probably love this book. It's a fun read for anyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure.
REVIEW OF "SOPHIA FREEMAN AND THE GATE OF JADE" BY T.X TROAN
In Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade, T.X. Troan takes the "middle-grade tournament" trope—think Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire—and injects it with a unique, vibrant energy that feels both classic and fresh.
1. Character Quality: Emotional Resonance and Growth
One of the most striking elements of this sequel is the maturation of the core duo. Sophia Freeman: Unlike many "Chosen One" protagonists who are naturally gifted, Sophia’s journey is defined by her willpower and emotional intelligence. In this book, her "Phantomation" spell is a brilliant narrative device; it links her magical prowess directly to her emotional state, making her battles internal as much as external. Tim Charnal: Tim serves as the emotional anchor. His protective nature and caution provide a necessary foil to Sophia’s impulsiveness. The "guilt" arc—stemming from his actions in Book 1—adds a layer of moral complexity rarely seen in pre-teen fiction. Supporting Cast: The introduction of the Monkape brothers and the antagonistic rivals creates a well-rounded social ecosystem. The "arbiters" act as an imposing, bureaucratic force that raises the stakes beyond mere physical danger.
2. Plot Quality: High Stakes and World-Building
The plot is structured around the "Beyond Event," a high-stakes tournament designed to earn Sophia and Tim their freedom. The "Hologram" Concept: The use of holograms to simulate dangerous environments (from flaming root monsters to hammer-throwing giants) allows Troan to flex his imagination without being restricted by the island's geography. The Memory List: This is perhaps the most innovative plot mechanic. It allows characters to "download" the experiences of past contestants. It creates a bridge between the present action and the island's deep lore, making the world feel ancient and lived-in. Pacing: The narrative moves at a "blistering pace," as some critics note. While this keeps the energy high, my view is that the book occasionally rushes through the quiet moments. A bit more "breathing room" between the tournament rounds would have allowed the political tensions to simmer more effectively.
3. General Review: A Visual and Thematic Triumph
T.X. Troan has a background that clearly values the visual experience. The inclusion of original artwork within the chapters isn't just a gimmick; it’s a vital part of the storytelling that helps younger readers visualize the more complex magical creatures.
Strengths: Creative Magic System: Moving away from standard "fire and ice" spells to more abstract, emotion-based magic. Thematic Depth: Underneath the action, the book deals with redemption and trust. The islanders don't fully trust humans, and the protagonists have to earn their place through merit, not just prophecy. Standalone Accessibility: While it is Book 2, the narrative provides enough context that a new reader can jump in, though the emotional payoff is much higher if you’ve read the first installment.
Critique: The reliance on "lucky breaks" or coincidences is present—a common trait in YA fantasy—but the internal logic of the world is strong enough to carry the reader past these minor hiccups.
This is the second part of an exciting journey through the magical and mysterious Pandilone Island. T.X. Troan’s Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade is a deeply captivating fantasy adventure. The story follows Sophia Freeman, an ordinary girl who discovers her extraordinary destiny as the Chosen One, and is tasked with saving the island from the Eternal Curse (read Book 1). Alongside her loyal friend Tim, a former human turned tree boy, turned human again, and their dragon companion Wondnair, Sophia faces dangerous challenges, including monstrous creatures, treacherous mazes, and dilemmas.
It's so easy to imagine the events as Troan’s vivid writing brings Pandilone Island to life, featuring fictitious creatures, ancient arbiters, and breathtaking landscapes. The story continues from Part One as Sophia and Tim navigate the trials of the Beyond Event, a competition that tests their courage, intelligence, and teamwork. The characters are well-developed as we see Sophia grow from a hesitant girl to a brave leader.
Themes of friendship, sacrifice, and self-discovery are smoothly woven into the plot, making the story both fun and thought-provoking. The book closes with a new twist, which is the mysterious influence of the dark guardian leader Bolrock and the enigmatic Arbiter Scarlon, adding layers of intrigue and suspense. The inclusion of magical elements, like illusion spells and enchanted objects, enriches the story and showcases Sophia’s creativity and determination.
Overall, Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade is an enjoyable read, leaving readers eager for the next part of Sophia’s journey. One of my favorite moments is when Sophia cast the illusion spell to help Tim get ahead of Onuke while she saves Gigorie. The author’s imaginative storytelling and attention to detail make this book a memorable one. Once again, many thanks to Booktasters and the author for the opportunity.
Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade is an exciting middle-grade fantasy adventure that picks up right where the first book left off, throwing readers immediately back into the magical and dangerous world of Pandilone Island. From page one, the story is fast-paced, imaginative, and heartfelt—perfect for young readers who enjoy quests, mythical creatures, and high emotional stakes.
What stands out most is the dynamic between Sophia and Tim. Their growing friendship (and hints of deeper connection) adds warmth and humor to the tense, action-packed plot. Sophia’s character development is well done—she’s stubborn, brave, impulsive, and deeply human—and watching her struggle with the pressure of being “the Chosen One” makes her relatable.
The worldbuilding is one of the book’s strongest features. The author introduces new creatures, guardians, arbiters, illusions spells, and competitive events like the Beyond Event, which feels like a blend of magical Olympics and survival challenge. Scenes like the rope bridge, the phantom spells, and the underground giants are vivid and cinematic .
The illusory magic (Phantomation) is a particularly beautiful addition—creative, emotional, and tied to memory—and adds depth to Sophia’s journey. Some scenes, especially those with Sophia nearly breaking the rules, are genuinely suspenseful.
On the critical side, the book can be very fast-paced, sometimes rushing from one intense moment to the next without much breathing room. A few plot points rely on coincidence or lucky breaks (though typical for middle-grade fantasy). Still, the action keeps readers hooked.
Overall, this book is a fun, emotional, magical adventure with heartwarming character bonds, striking visuals, and enough twists to keep readers turning pages. Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Neverending Story, or classic fantasy competition arcs will fully enjoy it.
First, I'd like to thank Booktasters for the opportunity to read this. I would also like to say that it's been a couple of months since I read book 1 so I'm not sure how this will compare to that one.
Things I liked: -Tim -the challenges -Arbiter Scarlon
I thought the challenges were really cool and the atmosphere that surrounded them, especially the scroll of past participants. Like, that's so cool that they can enter a moment in the past to view what past events were, who each participant is, and even get some backstory on the main antagonist. These few moments were really enjoyable.
Arbiter Scarlon was actually kind of forgettable really. He's only making the good list because of the ending. It has me curious enough to want to see why he's teaming up with Bolrock and what they're planning.
Tim is a bit confusing since he has his moments where I dislike him and times when I don't. However, looking at Tim and Sophia next to each other, Tim is more logical and not as impulsive.
The biggest reason I'm giving this a two star though, is Sophia. I can't remember if she was this annoying in the first book or not, but in this one, she kept getting on my nerves. For starters, she changes the outfit design that Tanuke made. Sure, she asked first, but she just took control instead of asking if Tanuke could change certain elements. A big thing though that kept annoying me was Sophia brushing Tim off. They're a team yet she's bulldozing him and his ideas. Team name? Turns him down and comes up with a better one, which is the one they use. Trouble in a challenge? Let's ignore the rules and attempt to use magic. While we're at it, lets also ignore Tim and his ideas that could lead to victory.
Sidenote, I know Sophia and Tim aren't teenagers but they feel like they're teenagers one moment and then a couple of 7/8 year olds the next.
Upon learning that the sophomore book from the Sophia Freeman series had been released I had to buy it and immediately read it. I was not disappointed! The only problem with finding a fun series is having to wait until the next one comes out. As this book ended in a cliffhanger as well I’m sure you too will be hanging on the edge of your seat until the next one comes out. The book pretty much starts up where the last one ended. Miss sassy-pants Sophia, “the chosen one,” is still with her good friend Tim who has landed himself in hot water by (****spoiler***). As a punishment, Tim and Sophia will be sealed away forever if they do not win a special tournament. In order to reverse the curse and change the fate of the island, Tim and Sophia endeavor to do just that! We follow the two as they, the only humans in the competition, prepare to compete. Sophia is not only learning to use her magic but also still struggling to show respect to her elders and the rules. This three part competition (which I couldn’t help but compare to “The Hunger Games” at times) tests Sophia and Tim in many different ways. The two learn multiple lessons along the way while serving up an action packed adventure full of monsters, magic, and many obstacles. Definitely a must read if you enjoyed the first book. I’ll end this review with my favorite quote of the book and perhaps the most important lesson learned; “One of the most important things about being a great leader is to make the best decisions for all your followers… Do not destroy the forest to save only one tree.”
Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade is the second book in the Sophia Freeman and a fantastic adventure that keeps you hooked till the end.
The story begins with Sophia trapped in a magic full of mythical beings, rescued by a tree boy. Sophia learns that the island is under a curse and all her living beings, Including her are rapidly dying. Sophia is the chosen one and only way to break the curse is to drink the sacred water from a magical guarded fountain. As Tim's rash act lands both into trouble, they have to win a special tournament to avoid being sealed off forever. Will Sophia and Tim be able to complete the challenge?
Right from the start, the book is action packed, introducing the readers to new characters. The tournament adds a new twists with the characters facing increasing level of difficulties. The plot tackles the themes of friendship, bravery and redemption.
The characters are well crafted; especially Sophia and Tim. The writing and the world building is excellent, bringing the magical world alive. The colorful illustrations make the story more lively. The mysterious twists and the gripping narrative keeps the readers engaged till the end.
Overall, "Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade" is an exciting read and a fitting sequel to the first book. With some gripping storytelling and an engaging plot, this series is a one to watch out for.
Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade is an imaginative and heartfelt fantasy adventure that blends elements of magic, friendship, and self-discovery. It picks up from Sophia’s previous adventure, and dives straight into action, with Sophia and Tim navigating challenges on Pandilone Island while unraveling the mysteries of its magical inhabitants.
The plotline is straightforward but engaging, with routine challenges that keep the pace brisk and appealing, especially for younger readers. The narrative voice is light and accessible, with moments of humor that balance well with themes of courage and teamwork. Troan’s diction is simple yet vivid, often leaning into playful banter between characters like Sophia and Tim - for extra warmth and relatability.
Sophia stands out as a brave yet fallible protagonist, while side characters like the stern yet artistic Tanuke add charm and variety. Some dialogue, though, feels a little modern and casual for the fantasy setting, and might pull certain readers out of the world-building.
Overall, this is a wholesome and visually rich story that would resonate with fantasy enthusiasts. Its mix of magical creatures, creative spells, and themes of friendship make it an excellent pick for young fantasy lovers and anyone who enjoys a quick, uplifting read.
Does magic exists around us? I don't know the answer to that question. But, reading about magical stories and hoping that it exists is constant. It gives you happiness and excitement that is on another level. You hope to have those magical powers so that you can exercise them and use them on some of the stuff you would like without working hard. Magical stories have always been my favourite. They always transport me to a different world and everything is so enchanting about that world that it's so hard to come out of it.
I recently read this book and I must say that the story is really amazing. The way the events have been described and depicted are so beautiful and sequenced well. Sophia and her best friend had committed a crime for murdering the fountain guardian. Once their case is presented infront of the arbiters, they are given a second chance. They have to enter a competition and if they win, they would be provided their freedom back. The journey is going to be full of monsters, adventure and a little bit of magic. Will they pave their way through this? Read this book to find out.
I had a great time reading this book and I hope that my fellow readers would feel the same.

This was an exciting adventure! Sophia and Tim are on this island trying to get back their freedom, and they have to compete in these crazy challenges called the Beyond Event.
The book is full of action and suspense. I had no idea what kind of creature they would face next, and the challenges kept getting harder. I liked how Sophia and Tim worked together to solve problems and use their different skills to win.
One of the coolest things was that they could learn about past contestants and use their knowledge to help them in the competition. They also got this special ability to make illusions, which came in useful a few times.
It wasn't always easy for them though. They had to make some tough choices, and they got into some dangerous situations. But they never gave up on each other, and they always fought for what they believed in.
I also loved the beautiful illustrations throughout the book. They bring the story to life and make it even more exciting to read.

I had the great chance to read the Sophia Freeman book series recently and I am so in love with these books and the characters! WOW! In the first book we meet Sophia, her dad, and learn a bit about her family and her history. She also travels to an island where she meets Silimon, aka Tim. I loved the ending of the first book, very fitting! And in book number the readers are introduced to an event called the Beyond Event. The entire event is a great way to hear about the beings/creatures in the world that Sophia and Tim are in and how the competition goes down. I also read through the third book and learned more about the world and was introduced to a new character named Allen. We get to hear about Allen and his whole story and we also get to hear about Sophia's dad as well. We are also left on a big cliffhanger which brings us to another upcoming book. I am super excited to see what happens next in the series!

The well-connected characters and their companionship help them win in the end. The story has been enhanced through three different arcs, which are equally interesting and exciting.
I just love this kind of book where a reader like me in their mid-thirties feels like they're traveling back to their teenage years. It's so fresh and energetic, and the scenes are well-narrated, making it enjoyable for anyone, as if they were watching a movie.

Book 📚 Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade (Book 2)
Author 🖊️T.X. Troan
Sophia Freeman and the Gate of Jade (Book 2)The fantastic continuation of the fantasy adventure series is TX. Troan. The narrative deftly combines magic, friendship, and romance into an engrossing tale of bravery and resolve. With vivid images and creative challenges, the author deftly crafts a universe that keeps readers on the edge of their seats the entire time.
The world-building of the book is one of its strong points. Rich descriptions of the mysterious landscapes and mythical species that call the island home bring the setting to life. For those who wish to delve deeper into fantasy, this book is excellent for beginners. The characters' camaraderie is also expertly written. Sophia's personality changes along the course of the book and the television show.
This is the second book in the Sophia Freeman series. Sophia and Tim have to face three dangerous quests in order to obtain the jade stone, and with it, the forgiveness for a crime.
I found this book entertaining. I enjoy the books that feature a big competition and a great award for the protagonists, and this was not an exception. Likewise, I liked the characters, the quests, and how the story ended. I, especially, enjoyed watching Sophia grow with her magic and character.
Aside from the ending, I thought the main plot was a little forgotten, and Tim was occasionally annoying. Maybe it's because he's no longer a tree creature, or maybe it's because he's entering the teenager phase; who knows. And well, for me, those things made the book a little less enjoyable.
Anyway, it was an entertaining book, even if I prefer the first one.
