The Coup and the Prince

Rate this book
The coup should have been simple: oust the tyrannical regents and restore the rightful heir to the throne. No one expected the rightful heir to be dead, or for his younger brother to be missing. The search for the missing prince is important, but not as important as putting the destroyed country back together. At least, that’s what Aiden thinks until he stumbles on a terrible crime ring and a pair of beautiful green eyes that might just derail everything he’s been working towards..

Enjoyable

3.75 ⭐️

Good enjoyable book. Was shorter than I wanted but I enjoyed the story within. The mystery of who was who, didn’t work out how I expected so that was a plus.

I liked the friendship between Cam and Day. The way Day looked out for Cam was great, but I’m still not 100% as to why he took him under his wing, but his protection and help kept Cam safe.

I liked that build up between Cam and Aiden but it ended just as they talked about actually getting together. So it basically was only the attraction we got to see. I would have liked to see just a little bit more of them together.

The mystery of the missing kids was a good storyline, and I also liked that it started after the coup and showed the start of the rebuild.

3.5 rounded up.
Camden was adorble. The mystery was not really a mystery at all. As always, I wished that Mell's books were a tad bit longer to flesh some of the details out a bit more.

DNF @ 35%.

Very predictable. Stiff and uninspired dialogue and writing. The story itself seems to have too much going on to be enjoyable as a short story, but not fleshed out well enough as a longer one.

Summary:
Aiden is determined to save the people of his land to the point he enlisted in a coup to get rid of the previous regents. Now instead of doing his part as a the leader of the guard he is stuck behind a desk.

Camden has relied on his friend Day after trying every kind of street job(from pickpocket to stealing) without success. The only job left is to sell himself on the street. On his first day as he attempts to entice any interest, Aiden and he cross paths. Aiden immediately notices Camden in more ways then one. Upon entering Aiden’s home, Camden is invited to shower and Day arrives to protect Camden. Aiden offers Camden pay to help him uncover who is running a child prostitution ring and if they succeed Camden will work for Aiden. The two strike a bargain, but what they find between them could be worth more than gold itself.

This was a very interesting story, but I wish it had continued. I would love to have experienced more of their story and growing feelings for one another.

I‌ ‌‌received‌‌ ‌‌a‌‌ ‌‌copy‌‌ ‌‌of‌‌ The Coup and the Prince ‌by‌ ‌Mell Eight ‌via‌‌ ‌‌IndiGo‌‌ ‌‌Marketing‌‌ ‌‌&‌‌ ‌‌Design‌‌ ‌‌in‌‌ ‌‌exchange‌‌ ‌‌for‌‌ ‌‌an‌‌ ‌‌honest‌‌ ‌‌review.‌‌ I knew there was going to be a twist in the story but the author still surprised me. One of the things I enjoy and the author’s books is that even when they tackle a difficult subject they include enough lighter moments to balance it out. While there were no paranormal elements in this book, the setting in a quasi-medieval walled town was well done. I found myself very interested in an important secondary character and wished they could have a book of their own. Otherwise, the ending was very satisfactory.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.25 stars

This is a pleasant, straight-forward story with likable, sweet characters who only want to do good. Aiden comes from good blood, but has no interest in politics. What he wants is to be a city guard, to stop crime, clean up the streets, and keep law and order so that the average, every day citizens can go about their lives without fear. He’s kind, perceptive, but not overly complex. Like Camden, Aiden is too nice for politics, and loyal to a fault. And the more he gets to know Camden, the more he wants to help the boy.

Enjoyable story. As with other stories I've read by this author, it seems like the story should be longer. I looked to see if this was a sequel since so many different things are alluded to, but I couldn't find a previous story. I always want more... Full review to follow.

This was a quick read but I would have liked it to be longer. I wanted to see the relationship develop but it's fine as it is.

It just felt weird how are we supposed to believe that the relationship was going to develop after that cringy ending?

Just okay

The story was okay, not one of the author's best I don't think. Would have been better longer but it was fine for a short story
