If you like Killer T Cells, Character Deaths, and Sacrifices you may like Cells at Work! Code Black Vol 7.

QUICK REVIEW
The penultimate volume of Code Black does not dissapoint and really hits hard with the character deaths here. This volume continues the high tension storyline and keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

REVIEW
The penultimate volume continues the high tension story of this particular body where we have overcome depression and are now treating cancer. After finishing the original series I think I can say that Code Black is the stronger story. I particularly enjoyed here that we followed the main Red Blood Cell and his journey from a rookie to a seasoned Vet. In the original series it similarly followed a new Red Blood Cell but it split up the chapters to follow other characters and understand the body as a whole. Don't get me wrong I would have loved to learn more about the White Blood Cells and wished they made more of an appearance but the character writing is strong here. Not going to lie some of the character deaths here hit me pretty hard. Great volume cannot wait for the final volume.

Depression has been staved off, but all that smoking has come back to bite this body. Cancer has been spotted in the body and (unlike in the original series) the immune system is stretched thin. Metastasis can't be prevented and the entire body becomes a battlefield.

And the only thing any of the cells can do... is do the job they're designed to do.
Let's hope it's enough.

This series has 8 volumes.

Wow...I knew it was going to show the darker side of cancer that the normal Cells at Work didn't show, but I did not expect the Red Blood Cell that we've been following from the first volume to be killed. I'm not sure if he completely dead because it shows his hand at the end twitch, but still. And if he did, that means the view of the story will change and follow the rookie blood cell. Man, that was a shocker.

Wow, I thought the book was going to end here because the story did reach a narrative climax. As if it weren't bad enough that this body was overly stressed and suffering from diabetes, to throw cancer into the mix was kinda cruel but also genius. And thus we now follow the body's efforts to deal with this threat where any external treatment can prove to be as damaging as the disease itself.

Very smart exploration of things.

Eh

I’m not sure if vol 8 is the end of code black, or if after that it will continue with a different MC RBC, but I felt like the second half of the series wasn’t as a strong as the first. It got to a point I couldn’t tell most of the RBCs apart, so I wasn’t as affected by their deaths bc I was like wait to us this? I don’t know if I’ll continue or not. May just stick with the original series.

While cancer is obviously a major foe in the original series, there he is handled more like an emo, almost sympathetic, shonen-style antagonist. Here, the approach is full body horror, with extended epic repercussions both for the cell characters and the body as a whole. This would be a great place to end the series, but we will see what the next volume has in store.

The grittier sibling of the Cells at work series. Pretty intense and hoping for a good conclusion

As someone whose mom just went through breast cancer and leukemia, this volume hit me hard. Super informative and yet still entertaining. The series totally caught me by surprise.
