HUMBOLDT REDWOODS STATE PARK

H.R.S.P. is situated in southern Humboldt County along the South and Main Fork of the Eel River. The crowning feature of this redwood park is its superlative river-flat groves. There’s no other redwood park in California like Humboldt Redwoods.

The old-growth groves along the South Fork of the Eel stretch for 18 miles from Phillipsville to the Forks. From where they continue for 12 more miles along the Main Fork to Pepperwood, and then there’s 5 more miles of contiguous groves in Bull Creek. There’s a lot in H.R.S.P.!

Altogether figure 53,000 acres, 30 miles of old highway, and 160 dedicated groves. A strong hiker could easily spend a week tramping the trails through Humboldt Redwoods.

The efforts of Save the Redwoods to preserve northern California’s old-growth redwoods began with this park, and the story of how they planned-out and managed this incredible feat is told through the pages in this book, and it’s a story I get excited to tell.

The South Fork of the Eel River lies some 20 miles inland from the coast -- separated from it by the Coast Range Mountains. This makes the South Fork groves warmer, drier habitat. Compared to the coast there's less under-story in these groves. Forest views within the groves are less obscured by brush, and it makes for more photo opportunities.

Also, the redwoods along the South Fork have that classic orange tone to their bark, which gives the groves a pleasing warm look and feel. Another thing... the forest aerosols are a rich mix of redwood, strong on Tan Oak, with a hint of Bay Laural. Features all peculiar to the interior redwood habitat.

The groves along the Main Fork, for maritime breezes there, are a bit cooler. Not quite coastal but getting close to it. So there’s more brush, ferns, lichens and ground covers. All of which gives this part of Humboldt Redwoods a different look, smell and feel.

If you’re considering visiting Humboldt Redwoods State Park, this book is the perfect way to familiarize yourself with all the park has to offer. The book starts with a brief history of the redwood conservation movement, including the individuals involved, and how Humboldt Redwoods State Park came to be as a result of their efforts. The rest of the book is arranged with descriptions of each distinct area of the park from south to north, including a very useful labeled satellite map and mile markers where points of interest are located. Each dedicated named grove is described, with photos of the individual(s) the grove was named for and a description of who they were as well as a photo of the dedication signs/plaques. Beranek also describes the conditions of the trees in each grove, along with how to access them and if there are any trails.

The large size allows for beautiful photographs that capture the immensity of the individual coast redwoods. Beranek and his wife, Terri, appear in many of the photographs, giving the reader a sense of how immense the redwoods are. Beranek also includes smaller photographs of various plant species that can be found in the park, often with an accompanying description.

Gerald F Beranek brings a unique perspective to the coast redwoods because he worked for decades in the forests of California “falling timber and clearing cross country utility right of way.” As a lifelong native Californian he grew up hiking the parks. He’s studied plant sciences and California geology and “developed a very keen appreciation for this unique and dynamic forest habitat.” All of this comes through in his writing in this book, which is both extremely thorough and enlightening. Despite its large size, I plan to take this book with me the next time I visit Humboldt Redwoods SP.
