Bears of Asheville #4

His Protective Bear

Rate this book

***His Protective Bear has been extended with 15,000 words and is newly edited as of April 2024.

Hunter can’t go into the diner one more day and stare at his fated mate. They’ve known each other since high school, but whenever Hunter comes near Sage he ignores him or bolts. Hunter needs his mate. He’s tried to give him time, but his bear won’t let him wait much longer. Hunter craves Sage in every way and he needs to hear the man at least acknowledge that they’re mates.

Sage is a mess. He’s been in love with Hunter since they were in school together. The popular, athletic, alpha was everything he wasn’t. And Sage longed for him. But whenever Hunter comes around his mouth runs dry and his legs turn to jelly. Sage knows there can never be anything between them. Hunter is the sheriff and part of the most powerful family in town. And Sage is just a cook at his father’s diner.

DNF @45%

The previous three books were cute, but this one was cringey af.

The writing is repetitive and clunky. The shifter aspect is an aside, since no one ever shifts.

Sage is a complete asswipe, humiliating Hunter in public, only to do a 360 and beg Hunter to fuck him. Cue embarrassing dirty talk.

I couldn't take anymore.

I was really looking forward to this one, but it's going on my DNF shelf after getting ~75% of the way through. The plot was a good idea, but the romance wasn't tangible enough for me to enjoy the two MCs as a couple. And if you're here just for the steamy parts, I can save you the trouble right now by saying that the "scenes" are pretty much over before they begin; they might as well be fade-to-black for all the heat that's in them. (If you're like me and this was the only book in the series that appealed to you, then you might not be prepared for the lack of steam.)

The writing itself wasn't bad and the characters had depth, but I quickly became bored with the lack of chemistry between the two MCs and I just couldn't make myself want to finish the book, even though I was so close to the end.

From feisty to toothache

Objectively, this story is over at the 45% mark. Sage accepts Hunter. Conflict over. After that, it's the characters being happy and having sex, waiting for the baby. Maybe some people want that. I find it boring.

I felt like this story let me down in the character department too. Sage put Hunter off for years. I expected him to make Hunter do more to prove himself. The first sex seemed so out of character that I thought "Ew". After that, Sage goes along with everything Hunter wants, even when he's a little uncomfortable with it. That seems unhealthy, and Hunter doesn't notice. He never has a real conversation with Hunter either. It's all superficial.

Hunter seems like a sensitive guy. He didn't approach Sage for years because he felt rejected. But he just releases all the hurt when he discovers the cause, and doesn't even accept Sage's apology. He doesn't deal with his feelings or show them to Sage.

I finished the book because I was waiting for a real conversation, some tears, some pushback, maybe something to happen with Hunter's job or Sage's past coming back. I was disappointed.

2/5. Highlights may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Content Warnings for book: Pregnancy, suicidal ideation, discussions of past domestic abuse

Kink: Light D/s

I am personally not a fan of characters who do the, “I’m upset because of a misunderstanding/issue” but instead of literally listening to anyone to explain what fully happened, they walk away or interrupt each time. Don’t you think you’d maybe pause and hear what someone has to say if there is an issue you’re upset by? I wanted to shake Sage for that behavior in the beginning. It was so dramatic.

I’m glad Sage eventually accepted Hunter, but the sex scene after that was so weird. Don’t get me wrong, I like all sorts of BDSM. But for a man and had a hard time opening up to suddenly wanting to play handcuff games outside — what? What. It just felt so out of character. Also can we talk about the kitchen island? How the hell did Hunter fit on that.

It was sad that there wasn’t much shifter time. Sage was apparently a shifter but I don’t think we ever saw him shift? I also think that it was weird (Aka I agree with Hunter here)

This book also needs some editing - saw some noticeable typos as well as copy-pasted paragraphs.

Thank God for that small favor!

I was intrigued by the premise for this book and I'm not sure how I feel about it now that I've read it. On one side, it wasn't what I was expecting, quite underwhelming, but it did serve to continue the series in a "nice way"... it was just... not very exciting or interesting in the end. So, meh?

Both characters Cooper and Graham appear throughout the saga from the very start in book 1, and the complicated nature of their relationship... or NON relationship is hinted at or talked about since then. This created some expectations, specially since it was the last book in the series (so far) and even more so because the last entry has yet to come and doesn't even have an updated release date. It was then, very disappointing to read the underwhelming explanation to why there's no relationship yet, it felt a little last minute.

Graham was underwhelming as a character and a wtf?! He seems to have a double personality that's not developed with time or naturally brought up, instead it's sprang out of the blue in a rather important moment for the couple. Then the reason's for his reticense while realistic in medical sense and understandable in common sense... was disappointing because of the hype it had from going for years. Either Graham should've done something or said something to someone cause otherwise... he just appears as a pretty stupid character. There's also no growth or story with him that's worth reading, a sort of slice of life without anything to spice it, I was even expecting a mentioned antagonist from his past to make an appearance, at least to bring some action to the table but no... nothing happened, just the instant love, lots of sex, a pregnancy and a delivery.

Cooper was a fun character to read on the previous entries. From all 5 brothers he's really the only one that makes sense is feeling dejected about the whole fated mate thing. They're all young so it's pathetic and ridiculous that they're all pining for a mate, dreaming of having one, thinking they'll never get one... WHAT ARE YOU?! 40? I often wondered about having a romantic partner but I had been bullied most of my life, abused, suffered from depression and PTSD... even if I was young I knew having a partner would be difficult for me... but them? WTF is with them suffering over this? But Cooper; Cooper instead had a pretty good reason to be bummed about it. He already knew who his mate was and was taking years to get something going, unsure of the reasons why Graham had yet to acknowledge him.

Now, my issue... WHY DID IT TAKE YEARS!!! FOR HIM TO ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING?! Revisiting previous books it's obvious they cannot take long before their desire to be with their respective partners makes them do something. So... wtf? Not only that but common sense should've taken him to ask questions, at least from people who knew him and understood him, maybe asked him on a date? It's not like shifters in this series don't date or go out with non-fated-mate people, so why not? Even if the guy's shy there's no excuse for how long it took... and that's a strong reason why the story line and plot don't make sense, paint both characters as ridiculous or stupid and make for a boring read.

There are a coulpe of things that were fun to read, some steemy scenes but nothing that really stood up to me. Nothing much happened and I by the middle of the book at the end of every chapter I was hoping that was the last chapter.

I'm not one to take down a whole series over 1 book. But I have to say this one that's a lot from reading the series as a whole. There's nothing in this entry to warrant reading it and because previous books weren't a total hit the whole thing lost a lot of its appeal (the reading of a whole family/group finding their loved ones). I give this book 2 solid stars... and while I'll give another books by this author a perusal, I'm not excited over the last one in this series.

Don’t let the description fool you, this is anything but a cute and drama-less book. I really thought I had struck it lucky: mpreg, shifters, fated mates, knotting.

It’s so hard to find that in MxM books especially one that doesn’t have drama in the description but immediately as soon as you start the book you had a main character whose anything but shy and cute. He’s rude and keeps humiliating the second mc (Hunter) and all because he doesn’t believe that they are mates. It’s frustrating.

I’m about 100 pages in and I’m annoyed. First, the MC makes a big deal about how he can’t smell and whines and bitches about that. Being rude to his father for him letting his mate know why he hasn’t scented him. It’s literally not a big deal. I, myself, cannot smell and haven’t been able to for years now. My sense of smell has closely decreased over the years after a particularly hard flu season and it has done nothing to me. Literally nothing. The only difference in my life is that I can’t smell the food before I eat it but the MC was making a giant deal about this, that and the other for no reason. So what you can’t smell! It’s normal and is no cause for bullying, depression, suicidal thoughts etc.

Secondly: this back and forth (I like him but I don’t but I like him but I shouldn’t) that’s the most frustrating thing as well. Shut up and pick a side hon, I don’t like you as it is but your making me hate you even more and the book just began.

Thirdly: the writing is lackluster. There is filler information in here that isn’t needed or necessary and the constant use of “son” is irking my nerves. This is how it goes “well SON you can’t do this because SON this is how it has to be and SON you need to do this instead of this SON” ‘son’ is used in every other word. GIVE IT A BREAK AUTHOR! Idk where your from but I’ve never heard a parent address their child as “son” or “daughter” or even repeatedly say their name. We understand where the damn boy came from, we don’t need a constant reminder.

Forthly (and maybe lastly): HIS PARENTS! They are annoying asf and butting in constantly! This is why I skip books where the main characters parents are avidly in. They are constantly butting in telling the MC what he should and shouldn’t do, giving their opinions on the public humiliation and telling the MC that he needs to apologize. Ummm is he 5? Is he under the age of 18? Last time I checked he isn’t, this is a A and B conversation so C yourself out of it. It’s none of your business, let your child grow and understand himself and his emotions. He doesn’t need you telling him what’s right and what’s wrong. I’ll state this again: It’s none of your business to begin with.

I'm not sure where to begin on this one. I was really excited to read it, but unlike the others in the series, it fell flat for me.

Sage was cute in the beginning, so it was fun to have the shy crushing omega and the Alpha sheriff crushing back. BUT..... that's when it goes downhill. When Hunter finally makes a grand gesture, Sage is a total dick! He tries several times, but Sage is still being an asshole! I understand he's been hurt, but Hunter was clearly trying so hard! Then oddly enough Sage finally has a change of heart and in their first date wants to be handcuffed and fucked. 😳 WTH?? I was so confused!

There were a couple of odd plot points that were out of place. Why have a guy on your property trespassing randomly. It was weird. And then to keep Sage away from you, knowing his insecurities, not tell him about the danger, just keep him in the dark, how stupid! Then his ex shows up and knows he's pregnant. How did he even know? Why not make the ex be the one trespassing and not some random? That would've made more sense, but who knows.

Then, even after they become an official mated couple with Sage being pregnant, they STILL haven't officially mated! I looked back over it again, thinking I missed it, but no. They never sealed the deal with the whole sex scene where Hunter should bite him and knot him. They got married but never did that ritual that was clearly written in detail in the other books. The bite would show others that you were mated with someone else. Never happened. Again, I'm confused.

I don't know. I enjoyed the other books, but this one barely registered 3 stars for me. 3 stars is actually pretty generous.

At the beginning, I thought it would be better... But after that, when both of them started to actually use their heads to think, the action got sweet and their relationship was excellent.
After the last book, I hoped that this one will redeem the series for me. It kind of did, but I'm not sure how much 🤔. Definitely liked it a whole lot better than the previous one, though.
Now, only the last book left to read and see if the series wraps-up nicely, or I'll have mixed feelings about it.
(I've read the non-extended version so it was a little bit short also chaotic/rushed at the end but a nice read nonetheless)

Ranking of my fav pairings in this series:
1. Kian & Gabe
2. Sage & Hunter
3. Nash & Austin
4. Cooper & Graham

Well...

This is book 4 of 5 of this series, and I kept hoping the writing would get better. At first, I thought it was, but about halfway through, it's like the author and their editor/proofreader just gave up. While the first half still had several errors, it wasn't awful. But the second half is just plain ridiculous. Sentence structure is abysmal, loads of typos, grammatical and punctuation errors abound. The repetitive and continuity issues that were in the previous books crept back in with a vengeance. And the danger that is added to the story is so random. It would have made much more sense for the coyote to have been Warren, but instead, there are two separate events that didn't add anything to the story. Another big confusion was that Hunter and Sage talked about baby names, and chose Emily for a girl, but they end up naming her Serenity?? There was no explanation for the change. Overall, this book started off decent, but went into the toilet pretty quickly, unfortunately.

I was excited for Hunter and Sage's story, but the lazy writing pissed me off and ruined it for me. I really want to finish the series and see Rhys' HEA, but I just don't know if I can.

Ugh, this one bothered me for a whole new reason. I understand that Hunter had been waiting for his mate for a long time, but there were way too many love bombing moments in the second half. The beginning was almost cringey because of how little Sage was willing to listen to reason. He also jumped into the back of a truck with the guy he's been actively avoiding with almost no prompting. AND THEN had the gall to STILL BE UNSURE about Hunter after already having sex with him. Also, there were two conflicts going on simultaneously and I honestly had trouble figuring out which was which. I thought Warren was the coyote, but I guess he wasn't? And Hunter just shook him by the neck and then let him go? Nothing happened with him, no arrests or charges for stalking, nothing. A lot more spelling and grammatical errors in this one too, like no one edited this. I really wanted to figure out what happened to the rest of the family, but maybe I shouldn't have... I hope for his sake Rhys is different then his brothers' mates.

Hunter ❤️ Sage

Oh my I fell in love with this series & this family from the very first book and every book just keeps getting better & better!
My heart broke for Sage & all that he went through because of his disability and for what someone made him believe to be true but man Hunter came in like wrecking ball and showed him non of his was true!
Sage & Hunters love was so sweet and to see the lengths hunter would go to show Sage how much he loves and cherishes him was pretty epic! The name they picked out for their baby girl was pretty epic too!
Skye is amazing, I love all of her work and I know it’s just gonna keep getting better! Can’t wait for Rhys book next! ❤️😀❤️😀

What in the absolute midway tonal change was that?!? At the halfway point in the story the characters flip and become completely different. And the tone of their relationship takes a complete 180. It’s such a turn off for me when o read about shy characters and taking things slow only to be hit in the face with sudden smut. You have to build up to it for it not to be icky. You can’t have an mc have trouble looking the other mc in the eye one moment only to beg to be handcuffed by him for sex the next. No thanks. DNF 55%.

short and sweet

I liked Hunter a lot. He was persistent and I loved that he didn’t give up on sage. But I have to say that it took warming up to sage. I found him to be immature and just ridiculous in denial. I get how hurt he was by his ex but to be that resistant to even having a conversation to allow someone to explain was a little much. And then went from I don’t need him or want him to a complete flip in 24 hours. Cute story.

This is the fourth story in the Bears of Asheville series. This is Sage and Hunters story. One of the many things that I am enjoying about this story is the sense of family and how that thread has been in every book! This one has the most angst. I love the family themes woven throughout, it's romantic, steamy and I love all of the babies too! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!

3.5⭐️

I had been looking forward to Hunter’s book since the beginning and was a little disappointed how rushed it was. It seemed to jump from initial issues to sex sex sex then the end. Hopefully the final book will be more detailed about these characters that We’ve got to know.

hunter and sage

I'm glad Hunter and Sage finally worked things out, and I enjoyed this short pick-me-up after a rough workday. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the last few chapters were super rushed, and the book could've benefited from one more edit.

I hope Rhys's story gets the time it deserves. I've been looking forward to it for a while :)

Not the best

Gotta admit I didn't like this book as much as the other ones in the series. Not much going on and it was a tad boring. But the writing was good as per usual for this author, this one just didn't grab e like the others.

Good story

Sweet, with very little angst. Disappointed that the shifter aspect is not more prominent. It's just talked about as "my bear was angry" etc. They don't spend anytime on page in bear form & it's only mentioned shifting & going for a run once.
