This is an essential read for anyone who's ever read Soul on Ice or been interested in Cleaver's opinions. This collection runs the gamut, from his more militant "The Land Question and Black Liberation" to the more complex and thoughtful interview with Playboy magazine in '68. It all validated even more my opinion that Cleaver represents a movement that was much more complicated than our history book and period criticism admit.
Universal and common themes. In an effort to focus on the goal of his activism, I'm trying to avoid too much biography on Cleaver. However, it is inevitable to learn the facts between his past rape convictions. I'm trying to work on dealing with the appreciation of the moral insights affecting humanity from the body of a man who once viewed rape as an act against an oppressive society.
I cooked on this for a while but this is a really fascinating look into Eldridge Cleaver. Standouts are the Playboy Interview, The Land Question and Black Liberation, Affidavit #2: Shootout in Oakland. But the whole thing is great. Learned a lot, this was my first Cleaver but I'm excited to crack open my copy of Soul on Ice. I can see why this guy helped radicalize a generation.
Haven’t finished them all but the Nat Hentoff interview is insane. Cleaver handles himself so well and it’s so interesting to read such glaringly violent optimism…even if it wasn’t all figured it out yet. Fuck COINTELPRO. The essay about him meeting Huey for the first time is also incredible. I rec this so much more than soul on ice
Incredible read which provides great insight in Cleaver’s inner workings, naturally highlights why he was such a strong revolutionary figure. The passage on Israel aged incredibly poorly and I personally have trouble reconciling the serial rapes of black and white women with everything else, though I acknowledge it’s all related.
Nothing new as I still remember most of what went on back then but It was interesting to find that my feelings are so different today from back then. I was stupid and biased , Thank God we learn with age or most of us do.
