B Positive by Jewel Killian is a very entertaining read and I thought, a fairly imaginative take on the usual vampire stories.
Eden was only turned as a vampire 1.5 years ago and during much of that period, she hasn’t had an easy time of it. She is sassy and very smart, but she is struggling with issues that started from the point she became a vampire. I found her problems to be really relatable (when is the last time you heard someone say that about vampire problems?) and I thoroughly enjoyed the inside view on her perspective on the world.
Julian is a bit arrogant and he likes to think he knows everything, but he is a king, after all. He tends to assume that he knows best for Eden and normally this would annoy me. But in this case, there’s just enough redemption, due to him attempting to learn how to do better, to keep him from seeming too overbearing.
I absolutely love the inner workings of Eden’s mind. She is snarky & sarcastic, with hilarious descriptions for the things & people around her. I hardly went more than a few pages at a time without finding something funny enough to make me at least smile. And there were plenty of chuckles and full on laughter moments to be had too. A perfect example is the nickname she gives to a certain diamond!
“I wasn’t just a cute vampire bartender with a slight vigilante complex.”
Eden Vaughn
I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions that Jewel Killian used all throughout the book. And little tidbits of info really added to the overall picture of the people and place, such as when Eden is musing to herself about things that she hasn’t expected when she became a vampire. Like still being able to go out in the sun, and continuing to enjoy eating real food. And of course, “who the hell came up with that garlic nonsense?”
There’s always the added bonus that if you need a new happiness mantra, you can borrow Eden’s one – “sunshine, rainbows, puppies and mermaids.” She uses it to stave off a murderous inclination, but you may find a less lethal use for it.
The supporting cast in this novel I found particularly likeable. The head of security gets the best nickname (he sounds like a big teddy bear) and Sunny, the kings assistant, adds a really nice extra relationship. But it’s Eden’s best friend Jaxson and his stunning fashion sense that really wins for me.
B Positive kept me wanting more the whole way through, and carried this over right to the cliffhanger end! The benefit for you is that as I’m writing this review, the 2nd instalment in the series – B Negative – had already been released, so there’s no waiting involved (phew!). And if you like a bit of background ambience, there’s also a playlist to accompany the book.
Thank you to Jewel Killian for my copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review and all opinions are my own.
