The Maiden Ship #2

The Lion of the Sea

Rate this book
“Perhaps the present, no matter how messy, is the perfect time to live.”

Family is not always blood, and home is where the heart is. It took Dain Alloway years to understand these foundational truths. Now the captain of The Maiden, surrounded by the found family he loves, Dain sets out to end a centuries-old genocide and prevent an oncoming war. But when the girl he loves is torn from his arms, Dain might be forced to choose between saving just her, or saving them all.

The Lion of the Sea is the second novel in Micheline Ryckman's, The Maiden Ship, series. This YA fantasy adventure is chalk full of action filled scenes set upon the high seas. You'll rejoin a loveable cast of characters from the first book and meet some nasty pirates and alluring mermaids along the way.

Perhaps all of my books are going to be written through adversity… Not only were we all slapped with this ongoing pandemic and a whole LOAD of other craziness this year, but I also, once again, faced some very hard personal health struggles. This year was so hard in fact that there were days I wondered if I’d even finish this second book in The Maiden Ship trilogy. But, somehow, despite everything, I did, and it feels like an epic feat that I get to share this story with you all on February 7, 2021! WOOT WOOT!!! TMS was my debut novel, and I learned a great deal writing that book, so I’m hopeful that because of that, The Lion of the Sea feels like a step up from its predecessor. Hoping--praying you all enjoy it as much as the first. (Fingers crossed.)
Anyway, I’m so thankful to everyone who took a chance on reading my debut, it feels like such an honour that you would give up precious hours of your life to my writing. I cannot express how much that means—sending love and virtual hugs to you all.

I’m conflicted on this book (hence why if you’ve noticed the rating has changed several times in the last few days), but maybe putting my thoughts into words will help me figure out my overall feelings on it. Maybe.

I still really like the characters, and Dain and Sable really grow and mature throughout the whole book. One new character, whose name I can’t say due to spoilers, SUPER annoyed me and I really don’t like her or how she treats Dain in the slightest—he’s not the one who did rotten things, you witch! 😡🔥 We get new and old characters alike and aside from above mentioned witch I like them and how they’re all very different from each other.

The seafaring adventure and expansion of the magic and situation our heroes are involved in was interesting and the pacing was much better then in the first book, however we still didn’t do a ton and I’m still uncertain as to what the villain is overall aiming to accomplish.

Now we come to all the stuff I didn’t like which is mostly at the end with the pirates, but first the mermaids (or merrows as they’re called in this book, though I’m going to just use mermaid so I don’t have to keep fighting with spell check, haha). Okay, I appreciate the different mermaid lore and that she didn’t try to eat Dain though I’m not sure what happened was much better. See they have a “lure” which is basically magical emotional manipulation/extreme flirting which this mermaid uses on Dain a LOT, including basically forcing a kiss (or more? Can’t remember) on him by magical compulsion and boy did I NOT like that, not to mention the whole “soul stealing” bit (which isn’t what you think—trust me, I was worried about that too) made me go “but why?” and frankly made me uncomfortable, not to mention just seemed a little unnecessary story wise—couldn’t there have been a different way to get that information? Also keep in mind this mermaid is naked the whole time with magical emotion manipulation powers over a young man who she can basically twist to do what she wants and…yeah, not cool. Nothing happens, thank goodness, but the idea was there and that was enough. 🤢

Then we come to the pirates…why are they here again? The book was going along great (minus the creepy mermaid bit) and then towards the end we get pirates and this whole strange thing at the end where a character basically ends up with a pirate ship and just…huh? 🤨 That was super weird in my opinion, not to mention the pirate leaders are a female gay couple which I’m not a fan of though at least it didn’t feel shoehorned in for brownie points. Oh yeah and while here Dain and Sable take a bath together in a tub and just, ew, why????? It was so unnecessary! Not to mention it made me feel SUPER uncomfortable!

So in the end I enjoyed the adventure and characters but disliked or was super uncomfortable with quite a bit of it, so overall I’m uncertain about it. I’m going to read the last book because I’m curious on how it’s all going to end, but future rereading wise it doesn’t look good for this book.

What an adventure!!

Magic, friendship, romance, mermaid, and PIRATE QUEEN??!! I must say that I’m so pleased with The Lion of the Sea. Yes, so pleased, indeed. I didn’t see that coming! If I had a few problems on the first book, I have none from this one. This book is action packed. It’s so intense. Problems over problems keep happening as the story goes. And I adore how brilliant the author built the plot. It’s so much better from the first book. If the first book centers more on the world building, this one smooth sailing in problems, despair, heartbreak, sacrifice, which are all needed for the characters development. The words are flowing smoothly and definitely easier to read.

I can’t wait for the next book already.

Thank you author for providing me with e-ARC

First off, thank you Micheline for the chance to be able to read an early copy of The Lion of the Sea in exchange for this review.

Gonna say, for a first impression, it's a lot easier to read then its predecessor. The Maiden Ship, while a good read, did NOT read as smoothly as its sequel did. Likely for an easy to explain reason, worldbuilding. Most of a first book often goes into worldbuilding as a way to set up the plot of the story, and how it flows, but it can often get tedious as well. With this book, unlike the first, it did not have too much worldbuilding, but more seemed centered on how the characters interactions with each other and the world around them drove the plot forward, and enabling an enjoyment of the story.

There were plot twists, some of which were easy to see coming, because Micheline set them up to be seen coming, and I definitely enjoyed them. They gave a unique twist on how life isn't driven by good or bad actions, and how things can mess up the smooth delivery of what needs to be done. The greater good does not always mean smooth sailing, pun intended. I liked how Micheline introduced different characters that seem to drive the plot forward in such a way that, as the reader, you would wonder what their prevailing purpose is going to be in book 3.

Micheline set up a plot device that makes me wonder if there is a deeper connection between Dain and one of Micheline's new characters that means that Dain and Sable might not be endgame, and makes me hope for a happy ending, even though happy endings are not always realistic. I enjoyed this part, because not only did it introduce a surprising plot twist, but it built upon the mythology of this world in such a way that it explained what needed to be done to fix the brokenness of the world, without actually directly saying anything. Dain just needs to read between the lines to see that, I think.

There is a sibling duo in this, that I think are going to play a major role in something within the next book, and I do not fully believe that it will help our good guys, but I could be wrong. I mean, it's not like the bad guy is gonna just let Dain, Sable, and the crew of The Maiden win so easily. Evil just doesn't do that, otherwise, there would be no challenge. No drama, and absolutely NO tension.

Oh, and last, but likely not least, I hate Dain's mother. After years of Dain believing she's dead, she just walks right in and acts like Dain's crew is hers to command, and that Dain must do what she says, even though he's captain of The Maiden. I DON'T think so! I do not like her arrogant persona, and hope to all heavens that she gets a reality check that bites her on the rear. If she wouldn't want to have someone else do what she tried to do to Dain in this book, then she shouldn't have acted like his path to freeing the world was wrong. I don't trust her, she's too damn shady! And that's coming from someone who also enjoyed the pirates in the novel.

Excellent sequel to The Maiden Ship!

Mermaids, Pirates, & Monsters, oh my! I really enjoyed this continuation of The Maiden Ship! I don’t want to say too much because of spoilers but this story was well paced, romantic, and exciting. Never a dull moment, the author takes us from one riveting moment to the next all the while introducing new characters and locales.

We learn more about the mythology of the series and knowledge of the Dernamn pendant. All of our favorite couples are here and there’s even a beautiful wedding scene. The dialogue is witty, the action heart-stopping, and the world building awe-inspiring!

If you love high seas fantasy adventure then you cannot go wrong with this lovely trilogy. I’m already anticipating the final book, The Rightful Bearer, to see how Dain, Sable, and company save The Four Kingdoms from the nasty Emperor of Dorthane!

An ecstatic thank you to the author for allowing me to read an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

A HUGE THANK YOU to the the author in providing me with an eARC of this book!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Maiden Ship and enjoyed this one just as much! While in the first one we’re introduced to the world and characters Dain Alloway and the crew of the Maiden Ship, this book delves even deeper and fleshes out not only all the characters but gives you action and adventure right from the get go. I highly liked the introduction of other magical creatures and Dain learning and seeing more magic when he comes across more adept like him and Sable. I also thought this book was refreshing to not only have Dain’s POV but Sable’s as well. With Sable’s POV, we get to see more of the four kingdoms. The world is definitely more fleshed out and the storyline is captivating as I read. The evil villain is explained more in depth as well and his plans that he is hatching becomes more apparent in this book too.

If you love high stakes action, adventure, some swashbuckling pirates, sirens, romance, and magic, then you’ll love diving more into The Lion of the Sea, the sequel once you’ve read The Maiden Ship. This author is definitely one to keep an eye on because she is an not only an incredibly artist but definitely a lovely writer as well.

Just like the first book in this series, The Lion of the Sea did not disappoint! I loved the new characters introduced and added to the series, and I can't wait to see who joins the cast next! The only thing I'm not looking forward to with the next book is the end of this series.

Dain and Sable together is probably my favorite part of these books. They're so cute as a couple! I liked that Sable learned how to maintain some independence and that Dain became less demanding towards her in this second book. The only thing they have to compete with is the humor. I love sarcastic and sassy characters - two types of people abundant in the Maiden's crew. Mo and Casper especially make these books fun.

I thought I should just put a side note here mentioning that the addition of pirates and mermaids has increased my love for this series! I didn't think it could get better than a boat full of kind, silly, and loving characters - but it did!

I'm so excited to see where the next book goes, especially with all the plot twists that came towards the end of The Lion of the Sea . Who could the rightful bearer be? Where will the journey take our characters next? And will everything end happily ever after?

The Lion of the Sea is book 2 from The Maiden Ship series. This book is even more adventurous and more magical than the previous one. It picks right up where we left, but the stakes are much higher as the future of the Four Realms is in danger, as well as so many lives within it. Dain, one of the main characters, is trying to get answers that may help turning the tide towards a safer world.
There are two POV’s in this book and they make the reading even more enjoyable and emotional.
One of my favorite aspects about this series is the presence of a found family, that is further developed in book 2.
The book world keeps on developing as well and we meet very interesting people from all corners of the realms, with very distinct personalities and magical abilities. The rhythm is fast paced, but it totally suits the story.
I was always reading at the edge of my seat and I could hardly put it down.
I can hardly wait to read The Rightful Bearer, the final book in the series.

I truly loved The Lion of the Sea!

The Maiden Ship was a lovely book, though it took me while to get the hang of what was going on in this world.
In the Lion of the Sea, it picked up nicely and though it had a few bumps for me, it quickly was “smooth sailing” from there. The twists in the storyline were sometimes easy to see, but I liked that I was able to gauge what was coming at me (sometimes).
I CANNOT wait for the next book. To find out if I’m right on how some if this will end, and who certain characters truly are.
I highly recommend these books (I think you should read The Maiden Ship first).

I was lucky to be able to read an ARC copy of Micheline's TLOTS; it is action-packed, fun, romantic, and filled with all manner of fantasy creatures. I absolutely loved it!! It is the kind of book that sucks you right in, and you don't want to put it down until you've read every last word.
I can't wait for it to be released so everyone can enjoy it as much as I did! :) It is well worth the read, re-read, and re-read... especially as we all now wait for the finale to this whimsical trilogy!

This book was absolutely amazing! It was a fantastic second book. I can not wait to read the third book! Different point of views, yay!

Sable is taken! Dain’s trying to find sable.

OMG Half of Dain’s soul and hannons are bonded.

Elden is there to rescue sable!
Mo and Lydia get married! They are now the co-owners and captains of the maiden.

Dain and sable say I love you to each other finally.
Elden and Ileana are together! I really hope that they break the curse in the third book.

What a lovely read and fabulous addition to The Maiden Ship trilogy! This book was just as enthralling as the first. Once again, Micheline has crafted a beautiful story with the perfect balance of intense action and heartfelt moments getting to know the characters. I am in love with her storytelling and beyond thrilled for book 3, The Rightful Bearer!

AN ADVENTURE.

Thank you to the author for an eARC in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own!

Oh wow, I didn’t realize how much I missed these characters! This is one of my favorite groups of friends/found family. Everyone has such personality and make me so happy when I read it. I love the new members added in (except for Dain’s Mom, definitely curious if she gets a redemption arc) and what they brought to the story.

It was nice to see a little separation between Dain and Sable to allow for some personal growth. BUT, I did miss the romance a bit. I wanted more between them. Gratefully, the ending gave into that so I’m excited for book three and what it will hold. I’m curious about where the sub-plot with Dain is going with his siren friend. I’m not sure I’m into it, though I’m trying to keep an open mind.

There was action and mystery happening all over. I love that we finally got to meet some characters discussed in The Maiden Ship and that they got a little bit of the spotlight. The brother/sister duo was interesting too. I just enjoyed meeting so many new people!

The mythology and magic system are inventive and easy to follow. There’s not much information on how it all works, yet I don’t find that distracting from the story. I love how this is set-up on the high seas. I love a good book out on the ocean. Adding in the different locations they went to really made for a well rounded novel.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses, hinted closed door scenes
- Violence: physical, magical, kidnapping

Action packed from the start and such an exciting read! I didn’t expect to enjoy this book so much only because the first book’s pace was slower (but also a great read, however, it needed to set the stage and provide character development). The storyline flowed very well and there were plot twists I was not expecting. I like that both Dain and Sable alternate in sharing the lead, giving insight to both sides of the story. We are also introduced to more types of characters such as mermaids (or sirens as they’re called in the book), witches and pirates. Micheline has created a vast and wondrous world and I can’t wait to explore it more with the final book in the trilogy. The story is left on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I finished it feeling satisfied enough to be able to wait it out, knowing the third is still in the works.

I really loved the second book!
I was really struggling with the pandamic, but this book was amazing to get my mind of everything going on around me. First I want to say how amazing and beautiful the cover is and how talented the author is. It's very eyecathing and I can't wait until my Faecrate editions will arrive <3
The story was full of action and plot twists and I couldn't put the book down. The plot was very well constructed. The characters got depth and showed growth. I also want to say how much I liked the writing style of the author.

Thank you Micheline for the early copy! I can't wait to read more books from you <3

I got an ARC of this book, and it was a perfect Christmas gift!
I have been highly anticipating the sequel to The Maiden Ship, because it was one of the books that surprised and delighted me earlier this year. The Lion of the Sea picks up where The Maiden Ship left off, beginning with Dain's cryptic dreams and more of the tale of the cursed lovers. I liked that while at times Dain annoyed me a little with how distracted he could be, he still grew as a character in this second book. I love that in spite of the harsh decisions he has to make and the dire circumstances, Dain is still a young man trying to figure himself out as much as he is trying to figure out what to do next, in order to save his love and his world.
I laughed every time Toff made an appearance, and I wish Casper had his own book. These two were always making everything better, even in the darkest moments.
I wished I could have seen more of Sable's evolution, but it's understandable that she had a slower developing arc, considering her own adventures in this one.
I am both excited and a little afraid to see the reunion of a particular pair of characters, and I look forward to what the third book promises. That being said, my favourite character in this one turned out to be someone completely unexpected, and I am hoping to see more of them in the next book.
Well, this is about as non-spoilery as I can make it, and I highly recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy, old tales, misunderstood stories, journeys, magic and hilarious moments amid demanding adventures. This year, while I had to cancel all my planned trips, I am happy I got the chance to travel with Dain & co. It was worth every moment!

I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Lion of the Sea begins with an attack on The Maiden, where Sable is taken. She is taken to a man who is intent on using her as the key to taking over all of the four kingdoms. Meanwhile, Dain is determined to do anything save Sable. In the process he discovers a way to save the four kingdoms.

I enjoyed returning and reuniting with the characters, Dain and Sable especially. I loved the character growth. Dain and Sable’s relationship took a step forward that was nice to see, and needed. My favorite pairing may be Mo and Lydia now though. They are just too darn cute.

New characters are added. There’s a mermaid. And pirates. Elden becomes more then just a story. All add to the story and the world masterfully. I really like them. I hope to see more of Hannon again.

The world building is expanded in this book. The magic system gets explained a bit more. There are still mysteries that need cleared up but this is the middle book so everything should be wrapped up in the third book.

If you haven’t read The Maiden Ship, the first book in this trilogy, go do that, then come read The Lion of the Sea. This series is a can’t miss. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.

What a ride! If I expected there would be sirens, I certainly didn't expect to find PIRATES (and a Pirate Queen, no less)! I liked the emotional journey of the characters, the progress Dain made and Sable's independance. Their growth at the end of the book was beautiful to see. A certain wedding made my heart VERY happy and made the idea of a wedding ceremony on a ship quite appealing (the way I imagined the scene, and the ornaments... GOALS). The new characters introduced are all special in their own way, and now, I don't know who I like more between Mo and Elden (no, kidding, Mo is still my favourite =P).
The world is well crafted, just like in the first book, and the magic is fascinating. I also like the way Micheline's writing goes to the point while being beautiful to read. Plot-wise, it felt maybe a little more rushed than the first book, but maybe it's just me. Otherwise, the story is compelling and takes interesting (and sometimes unexpected) turns (see above: sirens and pirates). The stakes are high for the last book; I can't wait to see how the story will end!

Wow oh wow! I've been waiting for this sequel. Patiently (or maybe not so patiently). Sometimes a sequel falls flat, this one DID NOT! I am still enthralled by the world created by Ryckman. Not only did she craft a magic system built in centuries of the world's mythology, she also has created characters that will capture your heart. Dain and Sable are definitely an OTP that you need to meet. While we continue to watch their relationship grow, I was quite pleased to see each character striking out and making their individual journeys in their own personal growth as well.

If you love books steeped in magic while sailing the high seas encountering creatures of the deep, unruly pirates and a villain you love to hate, Ryckman has delivered a romantic package tied up in a bow for you. #isthisakissingbook? It most definitely is so be sure to snag The Maiden ship. You'll want to make sure you are prepared for the release of The Lion of the Sea on February 9th.

I am so glad to have been given the opportunity to read an eARC of this sequel. Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy.

Mermaids, Pirates, and Gods. Oh My!

The Lion of the Sea is such a shining example of loving what you do and the love for the craft radiating through every word. You can tell that for the author, Micheline Ryckman, this a story so precious to her heart that she works very hard to tell this story in such an exquisite way. Her growth from The Maiden Ship, to the Lion of the Sea, is palpable and does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Her cast of characters is loveable and written so well you know exactly which members of the crew you would find yourself hanging out with in real life (Casper and I would charm our way into far too much trouble). Even with the greatly expanded cast from the first book, I had no trouble keeping track of all the characters which was quite impressive and always appreciated! I love the world of the Four Kingdoms and the magic system Micheline has created for it, very unique and always keeps me engaged. I can’t wait for the third book and more adventures with Dain, Sable, Casper, and all the others whom I love so dearly.

Thank you to Micheline for the eARC in exchange for this honest review.

First of all, If you haven’t read The maiden ship yet: GO READ IT RIGHT NOW.

Secondly, I want to thank Micheline Ryckman for giving me an e-ARC of her book. The lion of the sea was an extraordinary book and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have read it before the publication date. When I tell you that I got blown away by this book...
I won’t spoil a thing in my review, because every reader needs to experience this masterpiece first hand.

There were so many brilliant souls introduced to us and I seriously loved them all. I’ve no idea how mrs. Ryckman accomplished this, but she did. One special creature in particular made me root for her future. Trust me when I say that you immediately will know whom I’m talking about when you read TLOTS.

I thought that the maiden ship was great, but after reading The Lion of the Sea I came to the conclusion that this one is even greater! The tension in this book was immaculate and it kept me guarded during a lot of scenes. Also, I loved how the plot was build up and was told in different perspectives.

So drop everything you’re doing right now and pre-order The Lion of the Sea ;). It’s getting released on the 7th of February!

Thank you Micheline Ryckman for the earc! If you want to read the perfect young adult series set at sea, The Maiden Ship is what you’re looking for. The Lion of the Sea just confirms what I already knew after reading the first book in the series.

Here everything is explored, the magic and the history, and it’s all amazing and full of details. There are a lot of epic, romantic and really sad moments.

Ah, this book was just as amazing as the first! This is true action adventure at its best. Our characters go on quite the journey taking us to new places and bringing new members to the cast (one in particular just made my heart squeal to finally meet). I highly recommend this for lovers of pure, good times. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

A YA fantasy series about a found family on the high seas. Characters discover all the mystery and magic that surrounds their world and learn how to harness the magic inside them. Filled with lovable characters and mysterious magical creatures.

What an amazing adventure this story was. Full of action and magic. It was wonderful to see the author's writing grow and go into more detail developing this magical world and fun characters!
Looking forward to the final book!

Micheline Ryckman delivers another exciting YA adventure in The Lion of the Sea. In book two, there's more action and magic and world building. There's more romance, which I'm always a sucker for, and the setting's so vivid I felt wrapped up in ever scene. A fantastic read. Can't wait for book 3!
