The Leading Edge

Rate this book
Leadership is within everyone's reach, everyone's ability and everyone's power. It's time to step up, and Holly Ransom will show you how.

What does it mean to 'be a leader'?

What does true leadership look like in the 2020s, when we're facing complexity and challenges in every direction - from climate disaster to political division, and inequality to consumer mistrust?

And how can we be part of the solution, while crafting a meaningful and satisfying career?

The answers aren't simple, but Holly Ransom is closer to finding them than most. Barely into her thirties, since chairing the G20 Youth Summit in 2014, Holly has been working with and learning from the heads of countries, companies and charities to help them disrupt what they do and change the world for the better.

In her fearless and widely-researched manifesto, this innovative young thinker shows how it is within everyone's reach, everyone's ability and everyone's power to be an effective leader - in business and beyond.

Through three principles - mindset, method and mastery - you'll discover how to first lead yourself, then others. And you'll benefit from the wisdom of the luminaries Holly has interviewed, from Susan Cain and Condoleezza Rice to Barack Obama and Malcolm Gladwell.

This is the path to the leading edge - and becoming the leader the world needs you to be.

While I am an unashamed Holly Ransom fan girl watching her as a speaker, facilitator, MC and all-around good human being, she continues to raise the bar with her book. She's got an exceptional network of leaders whose stories she captures and shares with her readers. She shines a light on the hundreds of definitions and actions and mindsets and behaviours of what a leader does and is. The stories are relevant and applicable. I appreciate the fun chapter titles and organisation of the book enticing me to skip around and read ones that resonate (in the end, they all are worthwhile). Consider it like a TEDx event in the palms of your hand!

I have had the pleasure of listening to Holly speak at keynote a few years ago. She is switched on and very impressive.

This book is good and well worth a read, just not excellent. She is very well read, and draws from a lot of the classic concepts like 7 Habits and Good to Great etc. The problem with this is it feels like a collection of other people's concepts rather than her own.

This is one of those, mile-wide but inch-deep type books. Find some concepts that you like and then perhaps deep dive into them more with the original authors.

This book is a must read business book. It covers everything you need to thrive in business. Key learnings I took out of it include:
- manage your energy not time and plan activities around your natural energy peaks or dips
- get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Identify your mental blocks and push through them to expand.
- anchor on a collective purpose. With an overarching why that is universal and defensible

Brilliant. Every sentence is precious.

About 6 years ago, at 3am under my covers, I read an AFR article on Holly's Ironman training. I thought, who is this woman? She's unreal. And it's true. I admire Holly so much and see only greatness ahead of her.

What made this book so special to me was the little stories used to illustrate leadership concepts. Specialising in leadership development, I have come across these concepts before, but with less modern and less Australian focused examples. Clearly a newer book, there were references of COVID throughout. Whilst not revolutionary, I thoroughly enjoyed every page and will be recommending this book to my coachees as an easy introductory read to leadership principles and practices.

Do you like cake? Do you like self-improvement? The Leading Edge provides the ultimate recipe for modern leadership. Holly makes me feel like I immediately need to buy a small black book, write down the leadership ingredients and cook myself my own leadership legacy cake. Then give this cake to others to taste the love and effort that's gone into creating it. For ultimately, Holly reveals, it's about serving my leadership cake for others to enjoy - not saving it for myself. This is a must read for anyone who believes in the potential of people and the world we live in.
