Vlad is the most powerful vampire that has ever died and he has depression. So he starts a support group for the supernatural. When a banshee, a ghost, a werewolf, a zombie, a witch, and a faerie all appear for guidance, Vlad realises the scale of what he’s begun, and no amount of coffee and snacks will be enough to satisfy their hunger for self-worth and meaning from beyond the grave.

When secrets darker than the emptiness of Vlad’s soul emerge, the Support Group is thrust from one shocking situation to the next. Twists, turns, blood, and neuroses worsen as the most dysfunctional of pseudo-families grows, but what happens when one of their own no longer thinks they can carry on being dead? Moving on is not so easy when reality’s convinced you already have…

From religion and ponderings on life to revolting fried chicken shops and Jaffa cakes; from a deadly battle between vampire and werewolf to text messages gone wrong; from humans discovering where they don’t belong to monsters finding hope in unlikely places: Blood and Biscuits is dark, funny, and like nothing else out there.

Blood and Biscuits by C.M. Allen is definitely not your regular vampire or paranormal tale.
Vlad is a powerful vampire however, he’s suffered with depression for centuries so he decides to start a self help support group for the supernatural.
When a banshee, a ghost, a werewolf, a zombie, a witch, and a faerie all turn up for guidance, Vlad suddenly realises the scale of what he’s started and no amount of coffee and biscuits will quickly satisfy their hunger for self-worth.
The support group is the main focus throughout the novel, creating wonderful characters and relationships as the support sessions progress.
This group of desperate creatures of the night meet every week in a church. Each creature has issues but quite honestly they are not that much different from yours or mine, making this book very relatable.
From the start I adored Vlad he has such a big heart…everyone needs a “Vlad” in their life.
The world-building and the folklore of each supernatural creature was well written, the “disorders” that the author assigns to each, although amusing are very sad at the same time…a werewolf allergic to itself and a zombie who is vegan…priceless.
The book flows beautifully and it’s also a thoroughly engaging story of trust, loyalty and true friendship. Although the dry humour is hilarious and had me laughing out loud in places there is also deep reflections on life in the sub stories of each character.
The book starts slow but builds to an exciting finish. I'd recommend this book for readers who like supernatural stories and enjoy character-driven novels that includes some heavy topics. This might be a fantasy but it feels so real.
More than anything, I recommend it for anyone looking for a truly unique read. Even if supernatural stories aren’t your thing…I think you’ll still love this book.

Bloody Brilliant!

When I heard the initial concept for this story I was onboard, so unique!

It’s funny, it’s dark, it’s macabre, but most importantly it has heart.

It’s just the book to go with your tea and biscuits.

I bought Blood and Biscuits two years ago. At the time, I needed a light, fluffy, quick read, and this book about a centuries-old, depressed vampire who starts a monster support group, with the first members being a banshee with deep-set anxieties and a chip on her shoulder, a vegan zombie (what’s the poor guy to eat?), and a werewolf with a dog allergy, would fit the bill. Ten pages in, I realized how wrong I was. Blood and Biscuitsis a book to be read slowly so as to savor its phrasings and ideas, underlined, highlighted, annotated, and--reading gods, forgive me—dog-eared.

In short, the book is a lingering exploration of what makes all of us—and the monsters inside us—human. Most of the story occurs in the crumbling, abandoned ruins of St. Ellin’s Church on Ellin’s Industrial Island in Northern England. Here, in the basement is where the vampire Vlad holds his meetings. Starting with only three members, including Vlad, the group gains a fourth member when a werewolf, recently returned to human form, crashes the meeting to escape the gang of hoodlums out to kill him. Soon the shy ghost, Sarah, shows up, and as members settle in, they invite friends, including a faery exiled from her homeland for misusing her magic and a young weather witch. The group gradually grows from a collection of defensive and somewhat reluctant members to a cohesive group that cares for and nurtures one another.

As in real life, the most seemingly inconsequential personalities in Blood and Biscuits turn out to be some of the most important. Take Sarah, for instance. This insubstantial and seemingly insignificant ghost was a writer in life with no one to hear her words in death. She’s the ghost “that felt too much and remembered nothing.” Compared to the others, she seems almost like a nonentity, but it would be a huge mistake to relegate Sarah to the dusty corners of the crumbling church.

I’ve mentioned the book's phrasings, many of which are sheer poetry. For example, here’s a scene where Vlad returns to the church alone, waiting only to speak to the elusive Sarah. “Silver flashed again and Vlad pursued immediately, shadow chasing light from arch to arch, through vines and stone. In the flurry of light, Vlad saw her veiled face. They rose and twirled in a dance of the macabre, two affections of death swirling through frigid night air, spiraling the crooked spire until, at last, circling the pinnacle, pitch-black and silver facing one another beneath the gaze of that gaunt, lonely moon.” If that’s not poetry, I don’t know what is.

To end, the theme of Blood and Biscuits is that monsters are people, too, and they have feelings and hopes and dreams like the rest of us. It’s a powerful testament to the power of friendship and love and forgiveness and the importance of opening ourselves up to those who are different from us and allowing them to open themselves up to us.

Blood and Biscuits is the first book in the Supernatural Support Group series. Book Two, Martinis at Midnight is already out, and a third book is being written.

Oh, as an explanation to non-British readers who might be thinking of blood and biscuits in terms of gravy and biscuits, fear not! If you don’t know, “biscuits” is Brit-speak for “cookies,” and the only liquid consumed at the support group meetings is tea.

Blood and Biscuits by C.M. Allen drops you into Vlad's life in media res, as he starts up a support group for the supernatural. Called together by the vampire's online advert (“Is your death getting in the way of your life?”) we follow a banshee, a ghost, a wraith, a werewolf, a witch, and a member of the fae as they delve into their issues both mental and magical as a group.

I keep coming back to the tone of this novel. The narration follows Vlad, lets you see into his thoughts and senses without going through his view, yet gives a sense of complete timelessness. You know this character has a long history. You don't get to know what it is, you're joining him as he starts a new endeavor. You also know that at some point it'll end, but Vlad will continue to have an impossibly long life ahead of him. It is absolutely a unique read.

The support group is the main focus through the novel, creating fantastic characters and relationships as the sessions progress. There's a genuine feeling of attending such a group, which can lead to stretches focused around talking and sharing. The build up to the action is slow, and when you do get to it, it can be a bit jarring. But it is a character-driven novel, and in the characters it thrives. Everyone, regardless of state of decomposition, struggles with real problems, and through the sessions we get to see relationships and support structures form. Despite never losing their sense of being supernatural creatures, each is human where needed.

At the end of it, I am left with questions. So many questions. All of them set up to be answered further in the series, and I am itching to get my hands on the next book.

As this book deals with mental health issues, a couple trigger warnings are in order. There are some discussions surrounding, and depictions of, self harm. There is also a problematic conversation that takes place regarding if another character has Asperger's. Other mental health issues are addressed, if you have a specific concern about a trigger not listed, please feel free to ask about it, but those two were the major ones I noted.

I'd recommend this book for those who like character-driven novels, who don't mind a slower read that's dense on some heavier topics. More than anything, I recommend it for anyone looking for a truly unique read.

If you like vampires, and a good dosage of self-help therapy quips look no further this is your book!

This review may contain spoilers.

I was pleasantly surprise by this book. It is written well without visible grammatic or spelling errors. This book flows into a medium pace read with a perfect satisfying delivery.

The church a Victorian film noir location where this group of desperate creatures of the night meet every week. A vampire, a ghost, a fairy, a with, a werewolf, a zombie, and a banshee each with singular issues but not much different than yours or mine, making this book relatable.

What a cursed or condemned creature of the night might psychologically and emotionally be entitled to live through. The Author here poses brilliantly what mysteries might you learn along your life if you were an immortal or perhaps a ghost.

The author psychological insights are a thing of beauty. The author brings out funny and relatable dark sense of humor throughout the story. It isn't your horror blood and guts, everyone dies type of story.

No. The story gives us a deep understanding of what being human means, regardless of where life has taken you. This is a story of trust and true friendship.

Also, this story brought flash backs of a TV show "Being Human," where a ghost , a vampire, and a werewolf became roommates in a house. I would love to see the author explore the possibilities to a TV series in the future.

I gave 5 stars to this story because of the originality of the story plot. Very unexpected twists and situations. This is a story of the soul struggles for freedom, trust, loyalty, and friendship. Spoiler-->It has a happy ending… Yes, I am a romantic Kleenex in hand.

If you like vampires, and a good dosage of self-help therapy quips look no further this is your book!

A fresh take on self-help!

This book is not anywhere near my normal genre, but something about it intrigued me, and I'm glad I took the chance. If you've ever been to a group therapy session or a support group and can allow yourself to find the humor in them, this book will have you cracking up! There's a depressed vampire, a vegan zombie, and a werewolf who's allergic to himself.

But there's more than just humor. This book was all about friendship, finding common ground in places you never thought you could, and real life wisdom we could all do to be reminded of.

I look forward to book two, Martinis at Midnight. And if you're on Instagram, follow CM Allen cuz he's hilarious!

A lovely read

I absolutely love the concept of this book. It wasn't a tired old vampire story, but one that felt fresh and new. But most importantly, it felt like sitting down with the characters and having a cup of tea with them, and feeling with them, and growing. The writing style was beautiful, and engaging. Mr. Allen really has a great voice. Each character felt developed, too, although I'm left wanting more... but I'm guessing that's why there's going to be a book two!!!

I absolutely recommend this book if you're looking for characters. There is plenty of action and fast paced scenes for lovers of that sort of thing. But this book shines if you want warmth and caring, too.

I thought this sounded different and interesting and I'm glad I picked it up as I did quite enjoy it. I think all the characters are really good - a werewolf who is allergic to himself and a zombie who is vegan did make me laugh a little! I enjoyed the journey they all go on getting to know each other and how they help each other. I like how the problems they have are genuine ones that people have in real life as it can make you connected to them easily : depression, anxiety, self harm etc, and when I came across the twist with one of the characters it did pull a little on the old heartstrings. I think there's the right amount of action going on throughout it too but I'll admit, there was one or two parts that lost my interest a little - when Jacob's ex came back into the picture, nothing really happened with him : Jacob did get closure from it, which was good for his mental health but maybe I've just read too many horror books and expected him to do something bad 😅 I was also a little surprised with the ending, because I know there's a second book coming I guess I was expecting more of a big cliffhanger 🤷🏻‍♀️ although! it was a good ending and it did make me smile. I'll definitely be picking up the next book as I'm intrigued to know what is in store for our werewolf Cain and I've got a feeling Cuthbert may show himself some more? 🧛🏻‍♂️

*Deep breath*

Where do begin?

This book broke me. I have never read something so raw and divine. Never
have I read a book that was so hauntingly real. This might be fantasy, but I
have never felt so intimately close to the characters in a book before- I
was suspecting to sit down Monday night with some biscuits and coffee with
them. Yet, here I am typing away at this review because it is as close as I
will ever get to these characters.

I cried, I laughed, I yelled, and you bet- I clutched the pages of that book
so tight on a handful of occasions because I frankly wasn't sure what to
expect. And oh my, did I cry. Did I mention that? I can remember a
particular scene (spoiler free) and frankly, I was so moved that I started
to bawl my eyes out. I couldn't even talk to my family about the scene
without crying and you bet, sitting here typing and reliving that scene in
my head, I am getting teary eyed.

I lost sleep over this read. I was so desperate to see this book to the end
and where this story would lead to that I forgot sleep altogether. Would I
do it again? You bet *sips fourth cup of coffee* And yet, I was so angry to
finish it because I didn't have book 2 in my hands to follow it with.

This book did more than deliver an addictive story, it delivered a heart to
the reader. I have been both moved and inspired by this world in a number of
ways that I wouldn't dare yet comprehend but in time, I will. Layers upon
layers were created- filled with symbolism, messages, and growth.

With that all, I was given a true fantasy world that was filled with
supernatural beings and the most intricately and intelligently built world I
have ever discovered. And let's be real, I am a sucker for a vampire. And
above all else, a vampire with an internal battle of self-discovery,
depression, and control.

This is in the Top 5 Reads of All Time for me. Without. A. Single. Doubt.

I am anxiously waiting for book 2 :)

If you are expecting your typical vampire monster book then this is Absolutely not it!

Blood and Biscuits is so much more than a paranormal story. It is a fun and entertaining approach to a support and self motivation book. Not only did the characters grip me and not let go, they tore my heartstrings inside out.

These characters may look like heartless monsters on the outside, but they are just like you and I. Filled with problems both mental and physical. Not only do they suffer from their afterlife curses, but also the burdens they had as humans has carried over tenfold.

Depression in a vampire. A religeous wraith. A werewolf with dog allergies. A fairy, witch, banshee, and a singing ghost, all join hands in the oddest of circles. All to provide support to one another and find company and community. Hell, who doesn't want that?

The personalities shine in each of these characters. POV focuses on Vlad but the author has a magnificent way of making you feel like part of the support group and connecting you with each individual. It is a well written story with just the right amount of seriousness, suspense, drama, and laughs.
I loved how Cain and Lucy grew. I respect Jacob and Alizon. Vlad is fascinating in his history. Of course, I cried for Sarah. This book gave me so many feels.

An amazing motivational read.

Two words to describe this book ..

1) Unique

2) Genius

This IS a 'Unique; work of 'Genius', I loved this. The author has taken the very real issues of mental health and put them into a fantasy story. The main Character is Vlad, who is a clinically depressed Vampire who sets us a support group for the un-dead .... and he gets a response. CM Allen uses humour very similar to Terry Pratchett and uses it well, the book is a easy read and the stroy certainly progresses very well. Other members of the support group include a werewolf who when in human form is allergic to dog hair ... there is a vegan zombie .... others topics include social anxiety, dealing with suicide and thoughts of suicide and self harming ... the list goes on.

CM Allen certainly does not make light of these issues, but deals with them in a very real way,

I have NEVER read a book like this because there has never been a book like this ...

it is UNIQUE

and the way the characters deal with each ones various mental health issues is a work of GENIUS

so, to sum up ... Blood and Biscuits is a Unique work of Genius ... CM Allen is a name that we are going to hear more of in the future

I am looking forward to reading the sequel 'Martini's at midnight'

I wanted to review this book just from reading the first page 😂 It truly is a book you've never read before. A support group for supernaturals and a floor that's shy...what more could you ask from an epic start to a series?

I don't want to spoil the surprise of what supernaturals you'll encounter in this book but I must say, Vlad, the humble, powerful vampire, is someone I'd like in my circle of people. The journey and growth of each character has been portrayed and carried out with great care. I have love for every single character and what they represent in relation to the lives we live on this beautiful planet.

A great book not only entertains, but it evokes thoughts beyond reading the last word. There's lots of questions I have about the actual world created in these pages and questions I can think on in regards to reality and the world we so often take for granted.

This is definitely worth a read and I can't wait to dive into book two once I get my hands on it! (I heard there's a dragon 🐲 👀)

Surprising Book!

I expected this to be the typical Vampire book, but was in for a big shock. This book deals with a cast of well developed characters from the supernatural realm who gather together weekly for group counselling sessions. The story draws you in as the back story for each character reveals their personal struggles and issues. The main character, Vlad the Vampire proves to have tremendous compassion as he strives to help each member of the group. Just as you get settled into a book about dealing with the unique personal issues for a werewolf and zombie, it takes an exciting turn with a quest to provide complete salvation and closure for another character. The book also added some other fantasy touches with the realm of magic and the supernatural as they work on the quest. I have to also add, that this is not the short story type of book that grabs you into the story then ends abruptly, but was 519 pages of pure fun!

What an amazingly unique book this is! It’s hard to know where to start with this review, given that I’m not terribly good at writing book reviews.
Blood and Biscuits was nothing like what I expected. The whimsical title and the description of a depressed vampire leading a self help group, at first lead me to believe I was in for a comedy, not so at all. Although, there was plenty of dry humour to leave me chuckling.
The book focuses on Vlad, the depressed vampire I mentioned and through his experiences running a self help group containing everything from werewolves to ghosts. It elegantly covers a multitude of mental health issues, while keeping things lively with a smattering of supernatural suspense and a pinch of action.
This is the type of book that starts slow but builds to a wonderfully exciting ending, while also leaving lots of mysteries to be explored in the second book Martinis at Midnight.
I highly recommend you give it a go!

Talk about a different perspective, you must read Charles Allen's Blood and Biscuits!

Jumpin' spirits, who would have ever thought of a supernatural support group? A group of societal outcasts and creature/monster misfits who come together to share the feelings?

Apparently, Charles did! Right-oh!

I enjoyed getting to know Vlad, Lucy, Sarah, Cain, and the rest! Every time I sat down to read, it was as if I were sitting among them in their circle of all sorts of mythical creatures.

Vampire, werewolf, ghost, banshee, fae, oh my goodness, such a variety! There were definitely no boring parts as my new friends discussed not just their feelings or struggles, but also how to cope with their ethereal lives and even existential crises.

I'm so looking forward to reading the sequel, which is now out!

Live... Laugh... Lobotomy...!!!
💀
In this book, a group of vicious supernatural creatures start a support group. They're so preoccupied with issues like identity, diversity, veganism, feminism, and all the 'isms' you can think of. Picture yourself stumbling into an alternate dimension of unparalleled positivity, where these creatures are so sickeningly supportive and understanding that you'll start seeing rainbows everywhere and involuntarily spew pink glitter with every page turn. Prepare yourself for a full-scale onslaught on your sanity as they relentlessly bombard your poor, unsuspecting brain with their obnoxious rays of friendship-powered optimism. By the time you're halfway through, a lobotomy might actually start to sound like an appealing alternative to this relentless onslaught of good vibes!

Mind blowing!

This book is one of the best I've read so far. It's different from everything else that I've read. A good different!!
This book has so many interesting things in it!!
A werewolf allergic to himself, a vegan zombie. But through all the funny things, you will also find deep reflections on life, multiple sub stories for each character. So much magic and so many things that you couldn't possibly have thought of!

You definitely need to read this book!
I know I will read the next one when it comes out!

Reflective, relatable, supernatural escapism

I loved the unique premise of this novel and how it expertly blended the supernatural with the everyday. In equal measures challenging, witty and suspenseful it is rare to find a book which causes the reader to take pause and reflect without making them feel heavy. It is a book which really worms it's way into your heart and lodges there. I can't wait to see where the story goes and which of the many questions are answered. I can't wait to dive in to the next installment.

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a unique twist on the usual vampire story. I love vampires and I love books that deal with mental health topics, but this book was much more than that. It was such a raw look at all the characters in the support group. And Vlad the vampire. How can you not love a character with a name like that? Even if he wasn't possibly the most compassionate vampire ever to exist. I will definitely be reading Martinis at Midnight and more from this author.

This sort of book isn't normally by cup of tea, but it was enjoyable.
I thought the relationship between Vlad and Sarah was touching and heartbreaking.
I found Vlad's search for a cure for Cain fascinating.
I loved the enchanted castle at the end.
It will be interesting to see what the author does in book 2.

I loved this book. It's such a unique plot idea and so well carried out. I've had a bad reading year, with most books that I've picked up being just mediocre. Blood and Biscuits got me out of my reading slump with its well developed and interesting characters, great conversations and funky plot.
If you prefer character driven, supernatural stories this one is for you.

Do yourself a favor. Go get this book!!! If you like supernatural stories, you’ll love this. If you don’t like supernatural stories, you’ll love this.

From the very start, I adored Vladislav Eliade (Vlad). What a great heart he has and I really want to give him a giant hug, myself. I need a Vlad in my life. I was so curious about the characters, their origins, and the uses of their powers explained was different from what I’ve ever read (I like that). After each page, I kept asking myself “How does someone come up with this?”. Such a creative writer! Dude did his research.

I love the world Mr. Allen built. The folklore of each supernatural creature was fantastic, and the “disorders” that he assigned to each were amusing but sad at the same time: a werewolf allergic to itself? Awwwwww! I can’t wait to discover more about the island, the extraordinary castle (I need to live there), and I’m trying to envision what the bookworks and library wordpeckers look like. I bet THEY don’t roll their eyes when you ask for help (haha). So inventive! Sir Terrence Millington of Potley sounds like he’s going to be a lot of fun in future. I definitely look forward to more of Cain’s backstory. I have questions, but I won’t pose them here. I’ll just have to wait. ~le sigh~

I’m invested in my new friends now and am really looking forward to book #2.

I will say that you could read this book any time of the year, but it is also a great book to read during the October-December timeframe. It has the supernatural aspect to it as well as Festivus. :) I’ve been reading a lot of so-called Christmas books lately and this particular opus mentions it a lot more than others that are supposed to be holiday related (haha). I’m looking at YOU Eight Perfect Hours!

This needs to be a movie with the exception that Hollywood would destroy its integrity. Maybe Carnival Films?

I am a sucker for a good paranormal read so when I saw C.M. Allen's book about a supernatural support group with a mental health focus - I was instantly intrigued by the concept.

I loved how unique each of the characters were and their afflictions were very clever. The storyline was really creative and there were so many great moments of pure life wisdom intermixed.
